What is your favourite energy source when you are out on a run? Fancy winning a goodie bag of gels, chews and bars to test them out yourself? Let us know in the comments below 👇
Tailwind - Naked flavour. It is a powder mix that I use for ultra running. I found that with gels, after 6hrs, I could NOT consume anymore. With Tailwind I can easily make it through a 100milers
Hello everyone at the Running Channel, I have tried a variety of different nutrition options and have liked cliff bars and chews, gels from Sis and high five. A variety of different flavours is always key, otherwise a whole race with the same flavour can be not good for the stomach!
This summer I learned that I needed variety so, on long runs I bring gels, gummies, bars and of course water and electrolytes drink. Thanks for the video!
Great video as always guys. I’m almost at the point in my running journey where I need to think about fuelling so great timing. And to think I was in a wheelchair three years ago! Keep the videos coming!
I don't run far enough yet to need nutrition but love that a video is out there about this. I also cycle so definitely doing all the research I can about this.
I’ve literally just purchased my first hydration vest and it has arrived today. I am super excited to give it a try and this will give me the means to go for and train for longer runs. I love having something to work towards. I just wanted to share my excitement and hope that people can relate 😆 This video was really informative and interesting, thank you Anna and Rick for spending the time to talk us through them all (I must admit I was quite excited to see Anna and Rick together, I’ve missed them! Everyone on TRC feels like an old friend to chat with ☺️). Have a good day everyone! 🌻
Did my first training run today. It is pouring with rain in Texas today, so I wasn’t worried about water. I probably could’ve brought one of those drink mixes, and opened my mouth towards the heavens, and been just fine.
Hi Rosie, to be honest I really would use gels. Although you will have adrenalin to get you started I usually have one while waiting to begin and then at six and twelve miles. This way you should have plenty of energy all the way through but it may be worth bringing a couple extra, just in case. I do bring a bottle of Lucozade Sport with me but that's mainly because i hadn't used the gels much and it's a security blanket! Good luck and see you on the start line. Kevin
I'm with you on that! I'm running my first half in September. I just did my first 13-mile trial and found myself losing speed at miles 5 and 8.. Thinking of trying some gels to keep me going!
I just did my first half marathon 2 weeks ago! During my long runs in training, I found myself flagging after 60-90mins and carrying some gels and gummy bears around helped me push my training distances. On my actual race day, I took 2 gels and 2 packets of gummy bears with me in my hydration pack and finished them all!
Depending on the type of running you do, you may not need it. If in your training at HM speed, do you feel yourself lagging? There are lots of fat adapted runners that can tap that fuel for runs.
This is super helpful! I've just been using dextrose tablets but great to know there's so much more out there, would love the chance to try some of these out before my half marathon!
My favorites are Clif Shots & GU. They get me through my 8+ mile runs. I am training for my first marathon (February 2022, God willing). Thank you (from the USA) for all your inspiring, informative, and entertaining videos!
Running Channel videos always coming at the perfect time it seems! Looking for nutrition for my long runs now as I'm training for my first half marathon race.
Thanks for all the info because I have zero clue where to start! I'm a brand new runner (really a jogger at my pace) and I love this channel for how to be a runner and to keep myself going.
Hey guys! It's always interesting to hear your opinions on things like this. There are so many options out there and, when you're standing in the aisle staring at the multitudes of types, colours and flavours, it can be quite daunting so you just end up going with what you know (which may not be the best thing for you at the time). You don't often think about practical things like portability and ease of access (guilty of this myself) and end up trumping for the biggest bang in terms of kJ or carbohydrates. So, thank you for putting in the time to do this for us TRC!
Thank you for the great videos. Last year I lost 70 pounds while training for my first 1/2 marathon. Now I am training for my first full and have no idea how to help fuel the run. Your information is very helpful. Thank you for all the content.
Great info! Im currently training after having donated blood for the first time, and would love a video about the impacts of blood donation on performance. I (stupidly) didn’t consider how it would affect me but I am definitely feeling it
I've done Bournemouth half marathon 3 time and the great North run and find sis a good gel for me, keep up the good work great watching all your videos 👍👍
I recently started trail running and now go up to 18km, so have only started to use gels on the run. Loving the tri berry GU gel. I have no stomach issues and it tastes delicious. Keep up the good work. Cheers from Paul in South Africa 🇿🇦
Just done my first half marathon and definitely didnt fuel right during the race. This video has given me some alternative ideas that I can use in the future.
So much choice, so many options....slowly working my way through the very many gels available out there. Definitely favouring the gels over the bars and the chews. Thank you, as always, for all the very useful info
Since an unfortunate incident trying a soreen bar on a long run, I’ve always stuck with what I know when it comes to energy on a run. From SiS gels, Jelly Babies and numerous mini bags of haribo, it’s like a mini picnic on my long runs 😂 Recently though I’ve discovered Sports Beans. They jelly beans for runners and they’re awesome. Really gave me a boost in energy. Keep up the good work guys 👍🏻🏃🏻♂️🏃🏻♂️
Another useful video! I'm training for my 3rd 50k, and finally realized nutrition is key to keeping me out of the "pain cave". I thankfully have a strong stomach, but I get sick of things quickly, need a variety, and need to mix gels with chewy things, or I feel like I'm STARVING! Unfortunately, I've also got a tight budget, so buying many things to try is difficult. This was useful in sorting through many options!
I love honey stinger strop waffles. I also use GU energy the caramel is good, but I have had my stomach revolt with GU. Also another go to on shorter runs are hard boiled eggs!
At the moment, especially through the warmer months I concentrate more on hydration, using high5 tablets, but I do make sure I fuel up before a run and have emergency gummies with me. Have not got on well with gels as they seem to thick and sickly. Will have to look more into this area as I'm a back of the pack runner doing the GNR for the first time, followed in a fortnight's time with a trail half in Northumbria!
An incredibly helpful video. I'm currently searching and testing gels and such as I increase my running distances and this video is very useful. Thanks again!
Doing the Great North run next month, and struggling to find a good Energy source that is peanut free, hopefully my comment gets seen and wins a goody bag. Great content guys love it.
I'm a newbie to race nutrition so this was a great video for me!

Training for my first half marathon and for the first time hitting 2hr runs. I was just looking into gels and you posted this! Great coincidence! Now I have a good idea of what to try first
I use Veloforte like the natural ingredients, taste find bars and gels good on long runs. I also like that they’ll recycle the packaging all these single use packets are an environmental challenge. Thanks for this great round up I hadn’t heard of some of these brands and will look out for them!
I would highly recommend trying Voom. Tastes amazing, easily fits into your pockets and each bar breaks into 4 pieces so you don't have to eat it all at once. Great for longer runs
Great video, perfect timing for me. Going to do my first ultra in September and trying to figure out what to eat is a minefield with everything you can get. We'll worth a watch and thanks again. Keep up the good work 👍🏻
Bizarrely was talking about fuelling with my running buddy today because we both find that there aren't many gels that don't leave your mouth feeling 'coated', so this video is very timely - thanks! My current favourite is the Kendal Mint Cake range. Not too sticky and no bizarre aftertaste.
Am new to marathon training, just started using GU energy gels and so far so good, but it is great to know there are so many other options available. Thank you for doing these videos!
First marathon this year! I’ve been using baby food banana purée on my long runs but after watching this I think I might have to try out some of the gels.
My training and racing experiences improved dramatically once I nailed my nutrition needs. I looove HUMA gels and Cliff nut butter bars! Those are my faves!!!💝
I'm definitely looking forward to trying some of these! I really haven't seen many of these brand options in my running stores! Definitely will come in handy as I start training for my first ever marathon!! Thank you @therunningchannel!
Training for my first marathon and just did my 18 mile long run with a plethera of snacks that kept me going. Clif Bloks, mint picky bars and Mama Chia pouches were my favorites. Bummmed I can't get those Beet Active products in the U.S. Hopefully I can give those a try someday. Thanks Anna and Rick for all the tasty ideas on keeping us fueled! ❤❤
Love the video! Would love to try one of the options you spoke about!!! Gu and SIS have been past favorites, but some of these seem like great options to try...
I’ve tried cliff bloks and tailwind before now but have now just ordered the velaforte starter pack for and ultra in October (gotta try ‘em first!). Thanks for the great video and reviews.
Hey everyone from the Running Channel Team :) I am running my first ever marathon this year, looking forward to it! I still struggle with finding the right fuel - some gels upset my stomach. I found that dates, stuffed with almonds, work pretty well, and winning your box would be an amazing opportunity to try some alternatives. Greetings from Germany!
I have yet to try out gels as I am just now touching my first 10k runs, but I guess I will be trying some soon enough. I usually eat a good amount of carbs, dried fruits, also nuts, almonds and such before a run, and a protein bar and an electrolytes drink after a run. I've been running for only the past 4 months or so, so still learning. BTW, love your channel! It has been one of my greatest running education sources, so thank you :)
I am a total GU fan (salted watermelon) but I've also started to eat a GF Stinger Waffle in order to get a little something more in my stomach. Tastes great and it breaks up the monotony of all the gels. Thanks for the info Anna & Rick!

GU strawberry banana and orange flavor are my favorite! And I love honey stinger waffles as a treat afterwards!!
Gotta love a bar or gel. Thanks for making my Wednesday bearable
Tailwind - Naked flavour. It is a powder mix that I use for ultra running. I found that with gels, after 6hrs, I could NOT consume anymore. With Tailwind I can easily make it through a 100milers
I've not tried many. Just bought some kendal mint cake with chocolate coating. Looking forward to using it on my next long run! 👍🏻🏃♂️

I’m running my first half marathon in October, so this video is exactly what I’ve been needing!
The older I get the more help I need to keep my energy levels up. Thanks for the knowledge.
You are so welcome Mike! Hope you're finding some good tips here 😊
Great video as always guys. I’m almost at the point in my running journey where I need to think about fuelling so great timing. And to think I was in a wheelchair three years ago! Keep the videos coming!
I found this channel a couple of weeks ago and have been binging episodes during my treadmill runs!
Ah great to hear! Thanks for watching 😊
As someone about to start training for my first marathon and has never had a gel or chew in my life...I really appreciate this video!
I don't run far enough yet to need nutrition but love that a video is out there about this. I also cycle so definitely doing all the research I can about this.

NICE!! My absolute favorite piece of kit is my vest, so I totally get it! 😆
@@Kelly_Ben yes! I’m so glad someone else feels the excitement 😂❤️
I am new to the world of running long distances and watch your video for nutrition and even shoes. Thanks
Lots of options it can be quite overwhelming. Thanks for the breakdown of some of these. Really helpful!
Did my first training run today. It is pouring with rain in Texas today, so I wasn’t worried about water. I probably could’ve brought one of those drink mixes, and opened my mouth towards the heavens, and been just fine.
I’m working towards my first half marathon so appreciate the advice on fueling!
thanks for saving me money by narrowing down the options!!!
I’m doing my first half marathon in October. Hadn’t thought I would need to refuel during it, but definitely think I will consider it a bit more now
Hi Rosie, to be honest I really would use gels. Although you will have adrenalin to get you started I usually have one while waiting to begin and then at six and twelve miles. Great video. Running nutrition baffles me so thanks for an informative video.
Thanks for that. Got back from Triathlon training today and definitely needed this as struggled with my energy levels and very heavy legs in the run!
What distance ?
Great video @runningchannel. Very informative for us beginners.
Thanks for the review. There are so many options out there. I don’t know where to start.
right now i'm a big fan of sports chews. laughed out loud at rick's chewing because i look exactly the same on my long runs!
You guys gave me a lot of options to choose from I really appreciate it.

Well done Scott! Glad you found the video helpful. Good luck with your marathon training 😊
I'm a Tailwind guy. Seems to work for me plus great customer service on top keeps me coming back!
Something I struggle with is long run fueling as do many marathoners. This was a really helpful video.
I haven’t tried all of the products you discussed, so this was so interest.
Thanks guys. As mentioned below, I tend to buy in bulk whatever's on offer! SIS, High5, Torq .....
Never tried a gel or even eating anything on a run. Useful info for longer runs and races, thanks.
Great info! Im currently training after having donated blood for the first time, and would love a video about the impacts of blood donation on performance. I (stupidly) didn’t consider how it would affect me but I am definitely feeling it
Great video, particularly grateful for the heads up on how chews can be difficult.
Brilliant. Thanks for the insight. Love you all!
Love the video, just getting ready for Brighton marathon.
I've done Bournemouth half marathon 3 time and the great North run and find sis a good gel for me, keep up the good work great watching all your videos

Thanks for such a great video - am running VLM in October, and struggle to fuel. This has helped me get sorted! :-)
Thanks for a fab vid, never tried gels, chews or bars, but willing to try some after watching you guys.
I use SiS all the time. You have now opened my mind to other gels now. Great vlog thank you ❤️✌️🏴

Just been catching up on your videos, this was very informative, thank you
I use homemade nutrition and it has worked very well for me so far. Excellent video
Especially because I want to start increasing my running distance I really need to have a look at my fueling strategy!
I love honey stinger strop waffles. I also use GU energy the caramel is good, but I have had my stomach revolt with GU. Also another go to on shorter runs are hard boiled eggs!
Great video, very informative. I love everything cherry flavoured, those gels sound delicious.
At the moment, especially through the warmer months I concentrate more on hydration, using high5 tablets, but I do make sure I fuel up before a run and have emergency gummies with me. Oh my, so many to choose from. Love the sound of the Honey one. Would be nice to have that selection where I live!
Definitely be trying some of these, I always fight with my current gels trying to open them! You know the ones 🤣
This is helpful, thank you! I definitely need to up my nutrition game!
Would be nice to try some of the variety of products you had on offer .Good informative video as usual from TRC 👍
An incredibly helpful video. I'm currently searching and testing gels and such as I increase my running distances and this video is very useful. Thanks again!
Very useful I will be running my first ultra 107 km in September. My favourite food on the go is baby food in a sachet
Jelly babies are my go to energy food. Great video, lots of useful info. Thanks
Thanks Anna and Rick!!!!
I use SIS, they often have deals on their site to order in bulk. Happy days
I love this!! I struggle with what to take on my long runs and when to take it.
Doing the Great North run next month, and struggling to find a good Energy source that is peanut free, hopefully my comment gets seen and wins a goody bag. Great content guys love it.

Hello the running Channel team and thank for all these informations about fuelling
I had to test the gels , i always use bars, not easy to chew 🤔
I would highly recommend trying Voom. Tastes amazing, easily fits into your pockets and each bar breaks into 4 pieces so you don't have to eat it all at once. Great for longer runs
So far tried a few different ones and had some issues with all of them, might have to try some of these out!

Saw new items to try. Thank you. This was helpful.
So glad!
Really informative. I have used the gels but not the chews. I will certainly give them ago. I also like the honey buzz bars.
I was always a cheeky bag of Haribos kinda runner, but I tried gels for the first time a couple of weeks back and was quite impressed!
Informative and well researched video as always. Thanks a lot guys!
I'm gonna be running my first half marathon in September. Your videos have been so helpfull in my running journey :)
Love the video starting to try different gels ready for marathon training 😊
Am new to marathon training, just started using GU energy gels and so far so good, but it is great to know there are so many other options available. Thank you for doing these videos!
Great video, great overview of products, have yet to try using chews, but got to say those waffles sound good🤗
Great video thanks Anna and Rick! I’m quite new to the running gels/bars/chews and this video helped. Can’t wait to try and see what works for me

Been using sis seems to be doin it’s job , love the channel and the training program you guys have on the site y’all are awesome !
I love Cliff Bloks. I trick myself into thinking I'm giving myself a treat on a long run.
Training for my first marathon and just did my 18 mile long run with a plethera of snacks that kept me going. Clif Bloks, mint picky bars and Mama Chia pouches were my favorites. Thanks for the consumables roundup! I use the GU gels myself but I was thinking of trying the "honey" ones you mentioned!
Fantastic review lots to consider! Thamk you
This is so interesting! I'm considering doing a 20K race next year and will definitely need those
I am a total GU fan (salted watermelon) but I've also started to eat a GF Stinger Waffle in order to get a little something more in my stomach. Tastes great and it breaks up the monotony of all the gels.
Thanks for the info Anna & Rick!
Some of those are available in NZ. I like the variety. Will try and get a few different ones online before my next “all day picnic” 👍
Really helpful video - thank you. Currently using Dextrose tablets and practising with all the other options x
Thanks for the video! As a runner and cyclist, it's interesting to draw nutrition parallels between sports
Thanks for the video! I haven't ever used gels before but I am considering using them now for an upcoming half marathon.
