I never thought of woodturning a gavel on the wood lathe until Fred asked me to show him how it’s done. Fred wanted to make one for his wife’s birthday. Sure why not? This is the second time I woodturned a gavel on the wood lathe The first time I wood turned a gavel on the wood lathe was the practice run. Woodturning a gavel was easy. Woodturning a gavel is a great beginners project. A wooden judge's gavel is not very practical. Fred made his wood turned gavel from cedar. Osage/mulberry is a two faced wood. It is stunning, with amazing chatoyance, and it's crosslinked grain means it will crack, but seldom actually split. That same grain also makes it a challenge to split into balks, and can present some difficulty with traditional tools.. tool steel or better and sharp if you are working it dry.

Thank you. Yes it can get tiny hairline cracks. I seal the end grain with thin Starbond. Thanks for the comment.
