Beautiful K5LA Horn! Although I wish these horns could’ve stayed around with the Genesis Locomotives a little longer. It’s sad that they evicted these horns from their homes at a really early age. But tbh hese are definitely better then the F40 horns!
I have no clue, this was eight years ago, and I no longer have this horn. I didn’t know where it came from when I first got it, just that it was off of a P42.
That K5LA really does sound like Amtrak. Are there any other K5LA horns elsewhere? Some K5la horns can be also on buses, trucks, cars and other vehicles.
@@mafarnz Sadly, yes. Amtrak’s chargers won’t even have narrow font K5LA’s and they definitely won’t have square tag K5LA’s like this one. Amtrak’s chargers will NEVER have better K5LA’s than the Genesis locomotives did.
This sounds like it's playing the notes E, G, A, C, and E and not playing the advertised #D, #F, #G, B, and #D. Why is that? It's like how the K3LA is suppose to play #D, #F, and B which is the K3LA sound I love and hear on RBMN, but a lot of them on different railroads play the weird E, G, and C sound. I never understood why they did so maybe you have an answer?
One characteristic of K horns from the mid 1980's to mid 1990's is that they are very sharp compared to the advertised chord. They weren't bored as deep as they should have been.
Hmm, Sense 2002 I remember the RBMN K3LA's sounding like they had their correct notes, then again they do have a group of people who tune and clean the horns so maybe those K3LA's had their different notes at one point then they got changed by the RBMN. They do sound the best on that railroad
mafarnz great K5 man! Haven't heard one of those like that. I have a question, where do you get your horns? I've been looking for a used K5LA for under a 1000 which I probably will never find... but I go on eBay and amazon and I don't find anything. All I see are the PVC train horn ads and fake car horns advertised as train horns. Since you have so many, where do you get them? Do you find them on eBay or do you find them in an auction? Thanks in advance.
Love your videos! You have a very impressive collection. Is it hard to find these horns? I really want one. I’m part of a group that wants to build a full-size NYC Niagara and this would be really nice to have as a second horn. The WABCO E2 gets boring.
mafarnz For sure inaccurate, but would definitely be nice to have as a secondary horn. Nobody seems to really know what a correct whistle for the Niagara sounds like as the E2 was used so often. Might as well not even go for a whistle.
@Jmream2 Jmream After 2006 the mold pattern for the K horns was changed to include the word AIRCHIME cast into the side of each bell. Since these letters are raised up from the surface that is where the name came from. At the same time the tuning of the K horn changed dramatically, and not for the better. So raised letter refers to any K horn made after this change in 2006.
So the K5LA and K3LA are the American versions of the K3L and K5L horns. The K horns were originally invented for use in Canada, and sounded different. They were adapted for use in the US (for Amtrak in 1978) by taking the #3 and #4 bells and boring out the inside of the bells, to make them wider. This lowers the notes that they played. So straight bore means unbored, or Canadian bell. The #3 plays an A#, the 3A plays G#. The 4 plays a C, the 4A plays a B. BC Rail was big user of the K5H and K5L. (The low profile five chime manifold was another American invention, originally only the K5H manifold existed.)
The term half bore only applies to a #4/4A bell, and is exactly what it sounds like. Its bored out half way between a straight bore #4 and a 4A, resulting in a note that is half way between a B and a C, which isn't anything but out of tune.
3L and 3B are the same thing, and in fact Nathan has used both terms interchangeably, which is where the confiscation comes from. Check this out: www.horn-whistle-board.com/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=568

SuperWorldFan360 These horns come from the northeast corridor, where during the winter it usually snows a lot. This prevents snow from getting lodged in the bells.

Incredible sounding K5LA! Great work.
Amtrak never should've gotten rid of these, they're the best version of the K5LA.
Most of the P42’s still have them, but a lot got ruined by the addition of heated back caps on the 1, 2, & 3A bells.

What is with studs and nuts and no bolts to attach the horns? That normal for this one?
That was my own custom modification. It allows for quick removal and replacement of bells to make other K combos. Definitely NOT normal!
Beautiful singing K5LA, the way they're supposed to sound. Those new raised letter ones sound awful. Are the snow cones original to the horn?
The horn had holes for cones but no cones when I got it. The cones are replacements.

+Southeastern Railfan Productions I'll add those to the list of K horn combos to do.
Awesome! And I bet the K-horn foamers are happy now. Lol
In your collection do you have a K5HL?
+Jim Subka No, but I do have a 1L and straight bore 3 and 4 bells that I can put on this manifold to make the same sound as a K5HL.
So the K5LA and K3LA are the American versions of the K3L and K5L horns. The K horns were originally invented for use in Canada, and sounded different. There was only ever one sand cast K5LA, that being the prototype in the late 1970’s. All production K5LA’s including the 1980’s are die cast.
Thanks! Do 1980s k5las weigh more or use up more air than modern k5las?
