I remember playing this in 1998 and thinking it was the second coming. Liked the character designs and the combat. The story felt like next level anime. Also, really liked how it became an open world RPG, once the pirate ship gained the ability to fly. Then had to switch to the 2nd disk, and it was like getting kicked in the nads. Had no control over where I wanted to go. Everything was depressingly linear. It’s like, at the end of the first disk, you reached the summit. Then, with the second disk, it was just a free fall. Have never felt so monumentally let down by a game.
I played this when it first came out and I really liked it a lot I hope it gets remastered soon I got to the final act but never went forward to finish it I have no idea why and square enix should make more games like this one a mix of anime this style of RPG and robot fights.
Xenogears is such a mixed bag of a game. It has some of the most fascinating world building in gaming to date, with some genuinely interesting character development, all buried in a game that is subpar at best. The GAME part of Xenogears' gameplay is stale and uninteresting and barely evolves during the course of the game. The first 3/4 of the game are just sluggish to get through, but the last 1/4 almost makes up for all of it, almost. Tetsuya Takahashi should have made this into an anime, it would have been an instant classic on par with Gurren Lagann. Playing this game, and the Xenosaga games as well, makes you, the player, feel like your are just going from cutscene to cutscene to find out more avout the world and the characters. Takahashi makes some of the best and most interesting worlds in gaming, but his gameplay tends to be stale. Excluding Xenoblade Chronicles, of course, though seeing the direction that the sequels took I'm starting to feel that it was a fluke. All that said, thank you for uploading these videos. This game is much more enjoyable to watch than to play.
With this we get answers to a lot of questions and see the true depravity of the Solaris Empire (like those rations) and its rulers. What we never get answers to are the true origins of the Zohar Modifier and the Anima Relics, things that were supposed to be explored in _nine_ games of the _Xenosaga_ series. But we only got three of them before Squaresoft killed the series.
That scene freaked me out so much the first time I played it. They way they frame the reveal makes it hit you like a ton of bricks. It doesn't hold back at all.

Even if the second CD is mostly dialogue, I was hooked. Xenogears is a masterpiece classic.
