One thing that pissed me off was how the Emperor's Coven was portrayed. They were shown as these really powerful magic users yet they were taken out by Luz like they were fodder. What was so impressive about them that made Amity want to join in the first place?

Personally, I enjoy watching Owl House, but this criticism is well-earned by the show and its flaws. The finale, especially, was superbly disappointing, considerably so after the episode prior to it feeling like it could have possibly been a better season finale with the set up for the next season being the opening for things like:
- the development of Lilith's character
- Luz studying and learning more about magic to prepare for Eda's rescue
- the development of the Emperor and his plans
- etc.
I don't know. Maybe that would have drawn out a storyline for too long, but it's just an example of what might've been a better season finale. Anyways, I'll still be watching the show and hoping that season 2 is a bit more developed. At least if it isn't, it'll be an enjoyable thing to watch and laugh at. Sorry for such a large comment.

The entire point of the word "normalization" is to basically normalize "x"... so if you want more "weirdos", that aligns with the definition normalize. Once that occurs, no one would be classified as "weirdos" because they are normalized.

I really just wish one of these magical shows with “Weird, WACKY monsters and characters who are just like people!!!”, and who’s main message is “being quirky and weird is okay (wow how original)” would actually take the plunge and have one of said wacky creatures be a main character. And please for the love of god stop making all the main non-human characters be humans but with pointy ears (King kinda counts but he’s barely more than a glorified comic relief side character)

Oh my god somebody finally said it. It HURTS me to see this story about a human girl getting warped to a different world and all of her friends are just....humans with pointy ears. I get that it’s easier to draw a human body, but man, the art of character design has taken a massive nosedive since the 2010s. It’s literally just the bean face glued onto a simplified human body and it’s so boring to look at.

I’m really glad you pointed out that amity’s development wasn’t rushed, Lots of people were saying that her redemption was rushed but I knew it wasn’t, also I do agree the first season does have problems but I enjoyed it nonetheless, this is a show I actually see myself invested in and hopefully it’ll get better when season 2 drops.
Edit: So that original edit I made, sorry if I was being too cynical, I had time to think it over and I realized season 2 is an improvement, but it’s still not enough to turn me into a fan of the show, I don’t know maybe season 2b will change my mind.
Another edit: so this comment is now outdated because I have come to the conclusion that this show is not for me. Everything I have typed in the past doesn’t mean anything because I have changed my mind about the show, and quite frankly I’m embarrassed I even made this comment in the first place.
If people compare Amity's redemption's arc with the ones coming from characters like Zuko of course it's gonna feel rushed. Amity is just a little bit of a bully and cut out a friend from her life without an explanation, that really doesn't make her a hard to redeem character.

Not rushed but it felt like it happened a lil too early to me. Especially since there were a bunch of episodes around it considering, like others said, she wasn't really a bad person or villain, just a bit of a bitch at school lol. Its just that it took away from more interesting things like Eda and her curse,or training Luz. The magic school stuff and characters in general did this i personally feel, Eda and King felt like side characters to Luz' school buddies to me for a good number of episodes. I think giving those characters more screentime after the first couple school visits should've been a season 2 thing or they had more episodes in this season to focus on what mattered.
People need to get that saying an LGBTQIA+ ship is rushed or bad doesn’t make you homophobic, it’s the exact same thing of saying a straight ship is rushed or bad.

As you said, the problem with this show is, that it feels surprisingly dated. Been a girl that likes to edit clips on RUclips or likes to read fantasy books has become the new normal.
What happens with that is that here they do not seek to create a true character: Luz Noceda tries to be more of an archetype, of this new Geek who seems different but actually has a lot of heart, so that the backward public in North America will forget the stereotype Nerd who still evolves in the lower circles of cultural shame.

The first episode was definitely on the nose (heh pun intended), but I stuck with the show and found it getting better as it went along. I love Amity and don’t feel her development was rushed, just that we got one episode after the other which can get a bit tiresome.
The body swap episode annoyed me since voices and aesthetics are physical, not mental. Swaps can always be shown through changes in dialogue!

I really don't care about the body swap problem. If they can keep the voices consistant, then props, but otherwise this isn't the worst trope. That goes to "I wanna be an adult" but then when obviously immature kid becomes an adult doesn't want to be an adult.
Same, the first episode was basically "you are weird, it's ok/not ok" but after that it improves itself
Also not a fan of the body swap episode, it might be cause I'm tired of these types of episodes but even then I think it was the weakest episode out of the season 1
I like the show but I am a little afraid it's gonna end up like Star vs Forces of Evil and Steven Universe, both in writing and fanbases (the fanbase so far isn't bad, especially when compared to SU)
I think maybe the only series I've seen that pulled off a body swap episode was an anime called Amagi Brilliant Park, for context the protagonist got sick, so his friends made a magical suit (so maybe not exactly a body swap episode) that looks and sounds exactly like him regardless of whose wearing it so they could take his place in class while he recovers. In addition, each day a different friend of his would take his place at school throughout the week and each time they switched the voice of the protagonist stayed the same, but now he was speaking with the same speech patterns and attitude of whoever was taking his place at school and it was very clear which character took his place.
I wish more people talked about amphibia. it's so under rated.

The show is fine, but damn did I felt sorta uninterested in the whole thing. It felt like a watered down Little Witch Academia, with a more rabid and obnoxious fanbase. Trust me, go on Twitter, and 75% of the dumbest tweets on there are usually people with either Owl House or She-ra pfps.
I like She-Ra, but holy fuck, I will not dare interact with the fanbase. They're a group of whiny, entitled sociopaths.

From what I can tell the school is nothing more then a Harry Potter ripoff in some ways at least such as the fact that they have a game a lot like Quidditch and they even used to have a sorting hat.

I'm going to be honest... as a fan of the Owl House, I'm actually glad someone posted a polarized video like this. I'm going to be honest, I kind of had the Owl House serve as a personal replacement for Steven Universe after becoming disappointed enough with that show to no longer consider myself an active fan (granted, there are still things I love and appreciate about it, but I can honestly say that I'll never hold it to the same esteem that I did a few years ago). Even when I did, a part of me WANTED someone to come out and fairly criticize the show, because I didn't want to fall back into the honey-trap and become utterly crushed with multiple sudden revelations from more muckraking critics that the Owl House was NOT as flawless as it outwardly seemed to be. And if I'm going to be honest, even when I was in my "honeymoon phase" with the show, there were a couple of things that I already noticed that got me a bit cautious, as I should have been.
1. The Conformatorium. The CONFORMATORIUM. With all due respect, you couldn't make it more in-your-face if you tried.
2. Amity's dynamic in Lumity. While I love it as a ship and think the two's interactions, even as just friends, are fairly sweet, I felt like reducing Amity into a blushing mess around Luz was fairly out-of-character for her, especially when she seemed to be confidently flirting with Luz (even if she was still too scared to ask her out outright) before she confronted Grom, as well as how confidently she danced with Luz in their fight against it (at least, I interpreted it as flirtatious, anyway). Unoriginal though it may be for me to say this, I've honestly liked ship fics where Amity acts fairly normal around Luz while still harboring feelings for her, or at least ones where she learns enough self-control to do so.
3. Like many other critics of the show, I agree that Lilith's redemption needed more work. While I'm a bit more tolerant of how it went down due to the fact that she wasn't as horrible as the Diamonds (again, real original of me to use the Diamonds as the bar mark for bad redemption arcs), Lilith STILL shouldn't have been let off of the hook straight away; I mean, she infected her sister with a curse that crippled her magical ability and screwed up her life, which is easily comparable to Cartman from South Park infecting Kyle with HIV/AIDS- even if Lilith's actions weren't driven out of spite like Cartman, she still did so because she was being selfish and irrational. Even with them sharing a curse, Eda is still without magic, leaving her HIGHLY vulnerable in the episodes to come. At the absolute least, I just hope Eda, Luz, and the rest of the group don't just try to let everything slide just because Lilith finally decided to fix a mistake that she knew she could fix somewhat and should have fixed somewhat years prior.
4. Belos REALLY shouldn't have grabbed the Idiot/Villain Ball in the finale, regarding him betraying Lilith. I can state two ways it could have been handled better. One, I think Belos technically stated that he would only cure Eda if she joined his coven, making her refusal grounds for not keeping his end of the deal. Instead of basically saying "Because it is the Emperor's will" when Lilith tries holding him to his end of the bargain, he should have reminded her of the exact terms of the deal and clarified that Eda's refusal to join made her a liability to him, and that Lilith should have done better in convincing Eda to accept his terms. Second, Belos could have lied again, saying, "Of course" or something similar to pacify Lilith for a time, while planning to blame her continued disappearance on the curse's difficulty to remove and perhaps deepening Lilith's guilt to the point of her redoubling her efforts as a member of the Emperor's Coven. Fast-forward to Luz confronting Lilith. They get into their fight, and Lilth has Luz pinned, only for Luz to say that Lilith should have been petrified, not Eda. This would basically serve as a "wham line" to Lilith, who would be motivated to find Eda to see what happened to her, and realising herself that Belos was never trustworthy in the first place. Either way, this means that Lilith's betrayal of Belos would have come far more out of love for her sister than the dictator of the Boiling Isles having a brain fart.
Sorry for the wall of text. As cynical or masochistic as it may sound, I just wanted to say thanks for giving me a jolt of reality before I gambled too much of my heart into this show. I still love it for what it is like I do SU, but I at least know better than to give it my utter devotion.
P.S. I know this video is technically supposed to be a joke.
I wouldn't say that Lilith was redeemed because her actions were not really justified like yeah she helped luz but only because she was guilty of what she has done.

We've only seen gardening, Illusions, the Abominations and Luz's elemental Magic so far.

I actually agree with a lot of the points said in this video. The writing of the Owl House is extremely clunky and I always wondered why no one has talked about it. I'm glad I'm not the only one who felt unsure about this show like holy crap
I wanted to like _The Owl House,_ I really did, because of Alex Hirsch and Dana Terrace being involved in this show. And (some of) the first batch of episodes (before the March-July hiatus), were interesting to me, even though TOH wasn't particularly funny/that similar to _Gravity Falls_ (I know a lot of people were saying that this show was the next GF for...reasons? But I digress). Episodes 4-9 were interesting to me because of the world and lore building (e.g. Eda's curse, coven system) and the character development for Amity (episodes 3, 5, and 7 were so nuanced! So subtle! They laid the foundation for something great!)
But then all of the good things about the show that I liked in episodes 4-9 were thrown out the window when it came out of hiatus in July. I thought that Amity's feelings towards Luz jumped all over the place, the writing (in terms of humor & charm - the two biggest factors for me when it comes to any show) didn't improve at all - like you said, it's clunky, and while the world building and lore still remained interesting enough (e.g. the Titan), it wasn't enough to counterbalance the negatives. As a result, I never got as invested in the show as a typical TOH fan was - I never really felt extreme love for Eda (like, most fans are in love with her - she always felt kinda meh to me? Backstory is interesting, but just the character herself is meh), or extreme hatred for Lilith after "Agony of a Witch" (the "cancel Lilith" flashbacks intensify). I think that sums up my main problems with this show - I feel (and always have felt) ambivalent towards most of the characters (including Luz, and after a while, Amity, who started as one of my favs). But the characters I DO like are left on the back burner - i.e. Gus: I relate to his backstory/immaturity because I also skipped a grade in school. But noooooo, no love for Gus except for one episode that most people (excluding me) skipped.
And you know what annoys me the most? _The Owl House_ is a decent show at best, and it eclipses so, so, so many other shows that deserve better. Here's where most people like to bring up _Amphibia,_ which while I will say is slept on, is not as underrated (IMO) as _DuckTales 2017._ DT is actually funny, has great mysteries, TONS of tearjerker/heartwarming moments (I went into this show expecting a light-hearted mystery action comedy with some chuckles, I got literal tears, the biggest shit-eating grins I've ever felt in YEARS, and even a few belly laughs) and solid character development for each of the triplets + background characters. But because of TOH, it won't get a chance.
Sorry, I ended up writing a dissertation, but I just really, really had to get this of my chest. Also, I'm glad somebody else found the writing super clunky. It was painfully obvious that the writers tried to make the show funny by throwing, like, every humor related trope/joke/gag in the dialogue, but nothing really stuck for me.
TL;DR: wanted to like show, was good in the beginning but went to sh*t, go watch _DuckTales 2017_ instead

I feel the characters and voice actors do well, there are some legit good and funny scenes, but I overall find it so f'ing forgettable and a chore to sit through.

Unlike Owl House in Amphibia the characters are actually likable. Polly the best character is underused. The plots are samey and it uses the Regular Show formula in every episode so I got tired of watching it.

In defense of the Cal arts style. Animation isn't easy to make, and unlike Japan, we don't have an army of Korean sweatshop workers at our disposal. But this style is easy to draw and animate.

While, being a person who doesn’t like the “Anime style” of art, anime usually has a compelling story and MHA used an old “superhero” trope and actually turned it into a compelling story that adds its own charm to each and every character, owl house really fell on the character development, they could’ve done something with her friends and atleast have made them important in someway, they are just “there” and if they don’t do anything with them, why add them?

As a bisexual myself Luz crush on amity felt extremely rushed. There was a whole ass season of her being oblivious and all of a sudden one episode she likes amity back in one instance of an episode like when did that even happen. Like they are together great but the build up to it was really lackluster like it was a whole season of amity simping and luz being completely oblivious and then season two pops around and they are dating before the mid season? Someone is going to scream heteronormativity at me except they are wrong because if this happened to a straight person hell it happened to starco and stevonnie it didn’t feel natural.

Amity lost a ton of character and has been reduced to "Luz's girlfriend" I still like her but I expected her to at least keep her sassy side or something. Also I've shipped Lunter for a while now and it's not out of spite, it's the dynamic I would've loved Lumity to have. I have to say, I agree with you. I HATED how the season finale ended with Eda’s sister being instantly forgiven and making a feel face turn. She put her sister through years of torment by cursing her and now we forgive her because she tried to make things right and sharing HALF of the curse. Seriously, Luna should have had a confrontational battle with her to free Eda and end up killing her in her rage. I would applaud Disney in actually having the hero kill someone for once in an animated tv show. Gravity Falls is fine, but I feel like modern shows today don’t really show the ramifications of one’s dark actions. In Infinity Train season 3, the bad guy is actually punished for his sins and doesn’t get redemption and dies a cruel death, because he was a fucking terrible guy. Shows like that deserve to get more attention.
Even if they wanted her to be redeemed at the very least it should have taken longer not to mention she should have had to atone for her actions.

I think there's a missed opportunity with King. Instead of being the way he is, there's a way you can make both him and Eda more interesting by giving both of them a more developed backstory.
For example, years ago King was the actual "King of Demons", and the most powerful one amongst them. His original body resembled the Nine-Tails from Naruto, being a giant, black and grey canine with a skull-like head. He has roars that can shatter mountains, claws that can slice through anything, can harden his own fur, and shoot it out like missiles. And as the king of demons, he can command and control an army of demons and creatures, in a similar way to how Aquaman can control marine life.
The reason why he looks the way he does during the show is because Eda challenged and defeated him, robbed him of his powers, and made him her pet. This can showcase how powerful and skilled Eda is, and why King stays with her, even though he hates the Owl Lady with a passion.
It can also serve as motivation as to why Belos wanted to get rid of Eda, because she could rival him in terms of skill and magic, and one day usurp him. Especially if she can also mind-control King, give back his powers, and combine their strengths together to become a terrifying team.
Plus, I think it would've been funnier if instead of having him act like a child with a high-pitched voice, he should be more serious and delivers deadpan humor. Only losing his cool and acts over-the-top when Eda and Luz treat a once-mighty creature like a child or a pet. And instead of Alex Hirsch, he should be voiced by someone with a deeper voice, such as Kevin Michael Richardson or Patrick Seitz. Mostly because the very idea of a deep and booming voice coming out of such a cute design is much more hilarious.

Season 2 is better than Season 1 so far, but even then it’s still holding onto some flaws.
IMO the worst thing Season 2 has done is making Amity’s character revolve entirely around Luz. Once upon a time she was a competitive sassy girl with her own aspirations and fears, but now Amity has essentially become Luz’s accessory. She’s lost just about all character she used to have.

Agreed. I was in a The Owl House group in Facebook and Lumity was ALL they talked about, rarely they talked about anything else. Only after the show ended, the group rebranded and became something else (I heard the group got stolen or something), I'm still in the group and the Lumity has subsided...a little.
Now yes, Welcome to the Wayne is basically "Gravity Falls but in a hotel", but it's fairly good at it despite the young audience it's geared towards. Of course Nick saw this new show was actually getting decent views and they can't have that, so they randomly stopped airing this continuity driven show for young audiences in the middle of the first season, refused to air it in the US for 13 months, despite Season 1 having finished airing normally everywhere else months before they eventually allowed it to return to US television, and then dropped the series onto it's secondary channel, where it lets new shows die a horrible death, losing more than 90 % of it's viewing audience because of this.
I'm just glad we at least got a second season....which was half the episode length of the first one and felt like it had to cut down and remove a LOT so that you had the entire secondary supporting cast from the first season do basically nothing except for maybe one character. Cause you know, Nick are literally the worst network to make stuff for.

for the shipping thing. I've heard some people think that it makes since for it to be a bit faster than one would expect due to the characters being teens and teens have a tendency to go fast on things because to them life moves faster either due to hormone changes or just because of how their lives are. Not sure if that's a valid answer or not since I don't have a romantic bone in my body nor did I ever develop feelings to anyone as a teen. Just thought i would share and see if anyone else had anything to add to this thought.

Frankly I think the whole “teen relationship move faster” is an excuse for poorly/rushed written relationships. You might be hormonal as a teen but most of us are awkward as shit with relationships in our teens you might be crushing on someone for months in partial denial before you get to a point many of these characters do. Especially in cases of Rival to Lover types of plot lines
When I was a teen I had no interest in dating. I would rather just draw and I didn't think I was ready for it. I was occasionally asked out and I always said sorry I'm not interested. Maybe when I'm ready to get married. I'm currently 22.

As someone who aspires to write and create animated shows when I’m out of high school, I appreciate videos like this that highlight flaws in today’s works that can avoided or even just refined if I’m to make stories similar. To be honest, I wanna make something similar to today’s cartoons but I wanna make it as high-quality and well-written as possible. Any story, no matter how cliche, can be good as long as the writer knows how to execute each element properly. Though even if my first work is bad, that’s fine ‘cause I learn from it and also there will probably be a funny video essay detailing everything I got wrong, which I think would be pretty enjoyable.
Luckily the story idea I have closest to being a Gravity Falls-like has only one magical element to the story: living skeletons. Yep, nothing else magical. No mind-swapping, no size-shifting, no actual Gravity Falls plagiarism, just undead skeletons. That’s one good way to keep your story original, have only one defining magical trait in your fictional world. If every story has multiple magical elements, it’s almost inevitable that overlap between shows will happen. So even if the idea you have has been used before, if you pick out one magical element you can squeeze the most content out of, it’s an easy way of giving your world identity. Despite how much I loathe the ending of Steven Universe, I have to say that the base concept of ROCK ALIENS ARE ON EARTH AND THATS THE STORY is more interesting a concept than WWWWWWE DO MAGIC HERE.

@@jaylinroyal2173 That’s some pretty neat ideas, but if you plan on making a darker story, make sure there’s a point to the darkness. My stories deal in darker themes and while I may not be that experienced as a writer, I know enough to know some good reasons to put darker content in your stories. Be it that the theming calls for darker storytelling or you’re going for a tragic story. I have one story about a girl who makes friends with a living skeleton from the skeleton kingdom. The skeleton kingdom is lifeless and cold, having a strict hierarchical system meant to keep anybody from thinking for themselves or even knowing how to want things. The skeleton king, the man who killed thousands of people to bring them back as memoryless skeletons, says he does this to keep everybody safe, that human spirit and freedom lead to certain humans taking power for themselves and only benefiting themselves, destroying the lives of those less fortunate as a result. The skeleton king believes that as long as he rules the world and all humans have no desire or wants of their own, that every single person can live long, content lives, without anybody hurting anybody else. However, our main character Emi, a young and energetic girl with desires to live the most exciting life she can, is the foil to this villain. She believes that life is more than surviving, and that the world the king is trying to make will have no value because nobody will ever be really living. The skeleton king and the kingdom of skeletons are very dark as an antagonistic force, much darker than regular cartoon villains, but the dark symbolism they have are the thematic anchor that lets the story work. It’s the difference between skeletons and humans, skeletons survive but humans live. That’s why the heart of my story I believe is Emi’s skeleton friend, Scout. Scout is a lowly grunt in the kingdom, young and fragile and always taking orders. He doesn’t dislike this, he doesn’t really even acknowledge it, but that all changes when he meets Emi. Her adventurous nature holds his undivided attention from the moment he sees her, changing his life from the very start of the story. He starts the story off impish, quiet, and doing whatever he’s told, but the longer he’s around Emi, the more he wants to be just like her. He wants to do what he wants, he wants to have dreams, he wants to make his own life... he wants to be alive. His arc over the story is transitioning from the dark, morbid ideals of the skeleton king to learning the real value of being alive from Emi. That’s another thing I learned from shows like Star Vs. and cartoons like that, you don’t wanna leave main characters without anything to achieve. To me, Marco just wasn’t much of a good secondary main character because he didn’t really fit into the overall themes of the show. By the end, he was just a love interest. That’s what I try to avoid in my character writing. Sorry if that was a bit rambly.

Eda should have stayed a monster, and Edith should have remained antagonistic. It would have been interesting to see whether or not the pain of failiure warped Luz down the line.
Agreed ep 19 was a 'good' episode but ruined a lot of the story for me.
You know what would have been a really good way to handle this issue? If episode 18 was the season finale and the whole of season 2 was Luz getting herself stronger to eventually get Eda back in the season 2 finale....maybe I'd be stretching things out too much and ending on such a dark note may not be a good way to end a season for a kids show I am not a writer this is just personally something I feel could have worked.

The characters are okay, and there are some good moments, but I just find the story not very interesting. Most episodes I find very forgettable as well. Though Season 1 ended good, and hopefully Season 2 will be better.
Twist that would have been interesting: the Emperor is an ancient human who'd mastered magic through alternate means himself... but by accepting a REAL Demon King into himself. And he wants to get back to Earth to rule it. Which is why he'd been REALLY trying to catch Eda, since she was one of only a few witches who could open pathways to Earth.
Kinda make him a dark parallel.
So, since Luz knows magic doesn't work for humans AT ALL on Earth... she gives up the doorway to trick him into going there which makes him powerless.
Yeah yeah, it's kinda similar to tricking Bill into Stan's mind, but it makes perfect sense with what we're given. And it doesn't rely on suddenly-powers or anything stupid or absurd. It's just a smart character making a smart decision that is perfectly reasonable and works within the established continuity.

Yeah, the part where Eda thanks Luz for being in her life felt hollow because they barely spend any time together. Usually, they’re only together at the beginning and end of an episode while mostly caught up in their own subplot.

This show has it’s moments and it honestly could be so much better than it is right now, also not to mention that annoying ship (or shipping in general) will bring down the plot heavily at times but at the very least Eda is without a doubt the best character and saving grace of the entire show; she actually reminds me of Grunkle Stan in a good way.
(King’s awesome too, little guy actually helps distract me from Luz’s cringe before it often reaches critical mass.)

Eda having keeping her disguise would've worked pretty well. I feel like it would've been more interesting if Luz pacticed all types of magic in secret with Eda while Luz having her own disguise too, to hide the fact that she is a human. Because a human, who practises all of the covens would seem like a huge threat especially when they cannot possess magic since they dont have a sack on their hearts. Luz can draw magic symbols on paper. Not sure how that works but go off I guess.

The thing that gets me is that Luz appears to be the only one in her old school with "weird" hobbies, it's impossible to be the only person there with her interests unless she was a loner who didn't speak to anyone. So far, season 2 imo is definitely an improvement over the first season, as there’s less of the magic school and town stuff and more lore building and story focused episodes. Obviously though, there’s still some problems I have with the show, such as the inconsistent pacing.
I feel like Liliths placement on the second season was awkward. However apart from that the season feels fine.
Well that’s not saying much actually as from I what heard it’s overall just as bad.
It’s still just as boring. I dunno why I find this show to be such a snooze fest but I don’t think that feeling is gonna go away anytime soon either. Maybe because I still can’t bring myself to actually care about any of the characters lol

I don't know, I'm enthralled and have the same world building tension like I did with Gravity Falls or the very few good parts of SVtFOE.
Season 2 improves in small aspects but is still bad overall.
If you wanted to annoy most of the cartoon community, just go for the “All Western Animation Looks The Same” card.
I strongly recommend the Witch Hat Atelier manga. Like TOH, it's a story about an outsider girl wanting to learn magic but it's far more competent in both storytelling and world-building.

Yeah, this video sums up how i feel about The Owl House. I used to like it back when it first came out, but over time i started to dislike it. Luz doesn’t really stick out from the world of the boiling isles, it’s just her ears. She looks literally the same as everyone, except for the fact she has round ears. She feels annoying, at least to me. I like the representation in TOH, but the fandom solely focused on that, and not the other parts of the show. Some of the side characters feel useless, and aren’t used enough, like Willow. Although if i compare Luz to Anne from Amphibia, Anne is a better protagonist than her. Sure, Anne does have her flaws, but she’s never annoyed me to an extent, and she, along with Sasha and Marcy, stick out amongst the inhabitants of Amphibia. On another note, i definitely do like Marcy a whole lot more than Luz. Both are intended to be nerdy characters, but Matt Braly definitely wrote Marcy better than Dana wrote Luz. Luz just feels like fan service at some points.

I like Marcy from Amphibia more than Luz. Marcy is more than the weird girl, and being weird doesn't define who she is
Marcy is what Luz should’ve been. She even has some of the same flaws, such as escaping into fantasy and intentionally getting sent to an alternate dimension where she doesn’t have to confront her real life. The difference here is that they don’t try to squeeze kind, pure, Steven Universe-ish “hero” archetypes into Marcy’s character, and her actions have much more tangible consequences. I guess Luz’s do too, because she gets replaced by Vee and trapped in the Boiling Isles, but it isn’t paid attention to as much.

One of my problems with TOH's writing is that the story *wants* to give a message of "screw authority, be yourself!" but it's really difficult to buy that the Boiling Isles are a bad or oppressive place to live in. When the finale shows that actually, the emperor is a tyrant and the coven system is seriously bad, it's a bit out of nowhere because up to this point the main cast has gotten away with *a lot* without serious consequences. Eda can operate mostly freely, we never really learn about what Amity's parents' deal is, there are literally zero consequences for Luz (and those other kids) learning more than one type of magic, and there's a zillion other minor characters who are quirky and weird and operate freely. The message and setting are incoherent.
In season two we learn more about amity's parents and their backstories. Not much makes sense in season one but thats why theres multiple seasons
I unironically love Amphibia. The animation is excellent, the opening theme is super catchy, the dark comedy is a consistent riot and the character work is genuinely beautiful. It's mystery was even decently foreshadowed when it wasn't genuinely unimportant. Wish I could say the same about the SubtOwle House.

I pretty much hate it and I give all The Owl House videos and other piece of media that I hate like MLP FIM that have too many video examples 1 star ratings on TV Tropes as a form of protest because it has really gotten out of hand with works having way too many video examples.
I like the Owl House, but all your criticisms are extremely valid. I got drawn in because I liked the witch universe concept and Little Witch Academia left a hole that needed to be filled. While I enjoy the the style, I find most of the angles very boring - a lot of the scenes are drawn from the same perspective making for very dull scenes; Amity's attraction to Luz felt so quick it was as if someone snapped their fingers; an extremely unfair example - Megaming had a shorter run time but it made the relationship (however you choose to interpret it) between Megamind and Roxane an enjoyable and heartfelt watch, you could see them building slowly throughout the film. King is great and Hootie is the annoying character that doesn't annoy the viewer whilst watching, Luz goes from playfully naive and overexcited to annoying, I still enjoy her more often than not
The worst thing that you could do to your animated show or to your show in general, it's to make the ship(s) the or one of the main focus of your story, and I feel this show is going exactly to the same path with it as Miraculous, Star vs Evil, etc
I kind of disagree with Miraculous since the plot literally involves the love square thing but I see what you mean. But I believe that the writers can do something better as it isn't the main focus of the story, its just building upon their relationship already and it's not impacting the plot in a really big way (so far)

With so many people giving The Owl House praises higher than it deserves on both RUclips and other social media websites, watching this video was very refreshing. Although, I'm surprised Cartoonshi did not talk about Emperor Belos more. While I do like his design and I think Matthew Rhys did a great job voicing him, there's not much separating him from any run off the mill "dictator who rules with an iron fist" villain if you pay attention to his personality and actions. He also has a very small aura of presence to him, and it isn't helped when Luz is able to keep up with Belos despite being a witch with not much experience. I get that this is the first time we've seen him and there could be more to make him great in Season 2, but first impressions can mean alot for characters and how much an audience likes them, and Emperor Belos really didn't stick that landing in my eyes.
If anything, I think Emperor Belos is a character who is a good representation of the show he comes from: He's got the potential to be dark and interesting, yet he's really milquetoast and basic.
Tbh though, Luz absolutely wasn't able to keep up with him. She landed one hit, which impressed him more than anything else, and spent the remainder of the fight fighting for her life as he toyed with her for entertainment.
If anything, I think this comment is a good representation of the video it's posted under. It has the potential to be decent criticism and understand actual flaws, but it completely misses the point and has aged quite awfully

Ive voiced my concern on how i thought lumity (at first, soecifically amitys one-sided crush) was pretty rushed in either amitys wiki page or the grom fight episode’s wiki page and everyone just told me it was normal? like i get what a “crush” but what exactly has luz done to make amity immediately do a 180 in a couple of episodes from outright hating her? And then suddenly in season 2 theyre a thing now? I also get that they only have a total of three seasons but it couldnt have hurt to make the crush slowly develop a bit more realistically (And personally, if they really WERE to make a same sex couple of the main cast I could see Amity x Willow working better than Luz x Amity, even though personally I only see both these ships work better platonically) And also, as for Luz being a mary sue, ive also voiced this out (but just as a personal review on my profile on the owl house wiki) wherein its especially highlighted that even if she were to act like a jackass at times (the detention episode especially) shes still forgiven and doesnt have to go thru much or any consequences at all. I get shes the MC but come on all this rewarding the MC’s bad life choices is giving me terrible Miraculous Tales of Mary Sue and Forgotten Model Boy deja vu. And lastly, I hate how its always the black guy thats the butt of the jokes and what exactly is the difference from the human world and the demon isles? yknow except for the monsters and magic since witches are basically humans with elf ears in terms of physical appearance and theyre acting like humans are this extremely otherworldly endangered creatures that are to be put on either a pedestal or under a microscope.
They easily could have just had Lutz notice a wanted poster and Eda tells her why she's wanted instead of a random person telling us
I think all the criticism that's well deserved the only thing I disagree with is about the world building.
Not everything needs to be Star Wars level of world building where we need every intricate detail about the world and lore to make the story good. We don't need to know about some war from 500 years ago in the middle of a body swap episode.
It works best when it plays a role for that episode or for the overarching plot. It's the very thing that damned Steven Universe, as it had all this lore and world building but did absolutely nothing with it.
It was refreshing that a show had a finale where the main character isn't already set on taking down an entire system that's been in power longer than their birth, hyperfocusing on the big bad who's way out of their league or dragging out mysteries that are introduced only for it to be dragged out for 2-4 fucking seasons with no intent to solve them until you ran out of ideas.

That's how world building works, you flesh it out enough to tell the story you need told with minor intricate details to make it feel "real". You don't need to elaborate anymore than that unless the lore has a huge impact on the story itself

Declaring something as unexplained because you want an "interesting factoid" about it, despite it playing no role in the main focus of the story is just projecting on what YOU want the story to focus on instead.
I think the show definitely does have some flaws, but it also has potential. As long as they learn from their mistakes and actually make use of that potential instead of flushing it down the toilet alongside an ignited stick of dynamite, *cough* Star, Voltron and Steven Universe *cough*, it could definitely end up being a good show. Yeah the problem is that Disney restricts certain things. Like in a tweet Dana says that Disney didn't want Luz to be bi but she said fuck it. I feel like Disney don't want their creators to be creative
People don't understand that Mary Sue can be a legit critique of a character. Mary Sues (and Gary Stus) are a thing in fiction, although not usually in the way peeople think of them (magical princesses with six names who are half angel half demon half unicorn and half tardigrade). Calling a character a Mary Sue is not "sexist". It's a warning.
I've written Sues. You've probably written Sues. Most authors have written Sues. What makes the difference between a good writer and a bad writer is being able to grow past the temptation to portray your beloved character as a borderline flawless babey who gets everything they deserve with no real effort, and the one of making them into a poor tortured soul who everyone bullies for no reason.
Edit: "eating his own eyes"? That's... self... harm... are we really trying to make harming others or yourself cute and quirky?
Edit n2: not to be that guy but I'm totally gonna be that guy. JoJo not only did the bodyswap thing better (and considering the fact that it's an old series it also doesn't deserve the "unoriginal" label), but it also did the Gay(tm) better. And I'm saying this as a bi dude. Representation doesn't have to be explicit to be good representation, whatever people say. Take Good Omens- people accuse it of being queerbaity but guess what? They're canon.
There's lgbt people who are just more subtle. There's gay people who aren't looking for a relationship or one night stands (and no that doesn't mean they're ace/aro, we need to stop with this awful idea that romance and s*x are the most anyone can aspire to unless you're acearo), there's bisexuals who are dating someone of the opposite gender, there's trans people who go stealth.
A lot of us just blend in, and it's unfair that our lives are treated like a political statement. No, bisexuals don't have a duty to date the same gender to "fight against heteronormativity". No, gay people don't need to have a partner and be open about it to be valid. No, trans people shouldn't have to out themselves and potentially put themselves at risk or trigger their dysphoria because "we need more openly trans people".
Avdol commenting on a man's attractiveness, Illuso stating that two of his male friends are in a relationship, Jolyne admitting that she's envious of snails because they can reproduce with anyone are more subtle than a kiss on screen, but I feel represented better by that than by a bunch of Twitter bullies making pride flag icons with random characters.

I dunno man, the examples from Jojo are kinda stretched. The only real lgbt characters there are Squalo and Tiziano, those two guys from La Squadra that Ciocolatta murdered and Dio(according to Araki's comment)
