The Progressed Lunation Cycle (Secondary Progressions Explained)

  • An introduction to the secondary progressed lunation cycle in astrology, and how to use this timing technique to identify the seasons and phases of your life, with astrologers Catherine Urban and Chris Brennan.
We begin the episode by talking about the lunation cycle as a concept, how to identify the 8 distinct phases of that cycle, and find out what lunar phase you were born in.
We then move into talking about how each person experiences different phases of the lunation cycle at different points in their life within the context of secondary progressions.
Each person will experience a secondary progressed New Moon at some point in their life, and this will mark the beginning of a new 28 year cycle which is divided into eight sections based on the lunar phases.
During the course of the episode we talk through a few different example charts and discussed what happened in people's lives around the time of a progressed New Moon, and then the ways in which there was a culmination around 14 years later at the secondary progressed Full Moon phase.
The end result was a great introduction to one of the most interesting and useful timing techniques in contemporary astrology.

My first progressed New Moon was an eclipse! (During my exact sat return!)
Oddly the following opening square and closing squares EXACTLY conjunct 2 of my Natal squares all at 0°. The opening square caused the sudden death of my partner conj my 0° sat/pluto square. The prog full moon was conj my MC/IC axis. And the closing square is in 3 years conj natal 0° ven/mars square. I was born on a new moon so all my progressed moon cycles also coincide with my natal Saturn cycles. My next prog new moon will be 1 month prior to my second Saturn return exact conjunction. I feel my chart is extremely dialed into progressed cycles for some reason.

Progressed New Moon in Leo in the 7th in July 2021. Balsamic phase was bleak, bleak, bleak. I sort of accidentally started doing consultations late last summer even though I'm pretty new to astrology, just because I had friends asking me to look at their charts. Then people started telling me I needed to charge money because it was super valuable to them. So far, that's all I can correlate to it. I got divorced in 2015, and was kinda hoping that progressed New Moon might yield something new in terms of a traditional 7th house kind of partnership, but tumbling into doing astrology consults/finding a new long term path forward that works for me and my life now is more what I needed. In the past year, I've developed 3 different kinds of one on one work tracks, one was already there, and I didn't/don't want to grow it, but the other two are new.
Maybe a clearer example than my recent progressed New Moon is the second one. (first was the day after I was born). It was in Cancer (6th house) just under a year after my first child was born when I was 30 years old. Balsamic phase included leaving a good job in finance to go back to grad school in French lit, my father's sudden death, mother's remarriage 4 months later, writing my thesis, finishing grad school, pregnancy and birth of child - which essentially turned me into a homebody with an infant to care for overnight.

The few years leading up to my next progressed New Moon, I have Venus, Mercury and Mars moving into Virgo just before the New Moon in the same sign. It is conjunct all three in Virgo, which I imagine is going to change my life in a very big way, since Virgo is my 12th house, and I have zero Virgo energy going on natally. My first New Moon at 14 was exactly conjunct my natal Mars, as well. Just hoping it's not a ton of negative 12th house energy for the next 30 years.

When I had a progressed new moon, in May 2022. The progressed new moon was conjunct mars and in a square to Pluto and a trine to Saturn. At that time I had a really bad accident and nearly died. I fractured my skull, broke my arm, and developed a vertigo condition that lasted 18 months. My life came to a grinding halt which I am only just starting to recover from now. The progressed new moon occurred on the cusp of the 12th house at 25 degrees of Cancer and over the past two years has been progressing through the 12th house.
Needless to say, it's been an extremely challenging time and very difficult to integrate. But the reason why I mention this is because I was born severely prematurely. I was born at 24 weeks (or 16 weeks prematurely) and the beginning of my life would have been extremely painful.
I'm not sure what the next progression phase will bring, but I have noted that at the end of this year in December 2024, my moon will progress to cross the ascendant and at the same time both the moon and the ascendant will change signs. As the moon crosses the ascendant it will enter 0:00 virgo and the ascendant will change to 0:00 virgo just a few weeks earlier.
I hope this is the start of a new life and a return to good health, abundance and contentment.
The progressed date of this new cycle is July 20th 1985. I was born on June 11th 1985. From what I've been told about that time in my life, that was the time where I was well enough to be outside of the incubation chamber and my mother was finally able to hold and nurse me.
So yes. I think astrologers are most certainly onto something with progressions. If anyone has any thoughts about having the moon and ascendant change signs at the same time, please let me know. Thank you!

I've now fast forwarded to the progressed full moon, in 2036. And the moon will be conjunct to Jupiter in the 5th house and square the nodes at that time. The MC will be conjunct my natal 12th house sun.
So hopefully this large cycle truly is about gradually increasing the simple joy of being alive, that will culminate in my 50s. After so much struggle with my health, that would be truly wonderful.
And who knows..... I'm a painter, so maybe this time in my life will be a beautiful blossoming of my artistic talents. Time will tell....

Interesting and informative. However at age 61 I’m not seeing this match up (using solar fire) to the patterns in my life and how they played out. I wonder if it has anything to do with being born a day before a total full moon eclipse…

Thank you so much for this show!! I know that Evolutionary Astrology places emphasis on the phase relationship between the planets as well. I learned so much from this podcast. Would you have any suggestions on how to manually calculate the phases between the sun and the moon? It’s confusing for me when I want to do it the “old fashioned way”. Thanks again!!!

This is a awesome presentation, learnt so much, and a lot of it really helped to slot things into place and make sense of it all 🙂🙂 One question though, when you have a progressed New Moon, should one be looking at the ruler of the sign it's in, the house/sign its in natally, and it's transits/progressions? Whether that gets emphasised?

    • @astrocatherine
      @astrocatherine Год назад +2

Those details are not always important. Focus on the house (natally), the energy of the sign (as that is important for your progressed Sun's journey) and if the new moon aligns with any planets. The important thing here is the season of life.

Loved this discussion! I had my second progressed new moon a year and a half ago and I literally had to start my life anew. Both my progessed new moons have been in the sign of Leo, the first at 0 degrees and this one at 29 degrees. I know that in modern astrology this is called the anaretic degree and I am wondering if this is something rooted in the Hellenistic tradition and seen as significant or that it comes from somewhere else?

I wanted to note here that your new moon will conjunct fixed star Regulus. I would definitely recommend you to read about this star, this one is one of the royal stars that brings fame but comes with its own tests. My last progressed new moon was at the end of Taurus, around 28,5 degree which definitely describe whole progressed cycle dealing with crisises in my life . My family lost all their wealth right around my new moon. I was 10 years old back then.My whole cycle was learning about pain and managing to heal it, which I read correspond with Algol being close to the degree of my progressed new moon and of course problems with money since it’s called the degree of bankruptcy.

@@rapunzel761 thank you! Im glad if I can be of help.Yes my progressed new moon is coming soon in November this year. My last was was though, but it all made sense since it was in my natal 4 house (whole sign). I also learned a lot about my roots, healed a lot of family karma so to speak, going as far as 7 generations back. I am so happy that I learned about astrology in my balsamic phase, kind of feeling tired all the time and yes no interest in worldly achievements for now 🙂. What about your last progressed cycle ?Does it validate your personal experience?

@@SvetlanaDurandina yes pretty much. I also experienced the turning inwards during the balsamic phase together with the personal losses. When I ran my secondary progression chart I noticed that my part of fortune was exactly conjunct my progressed ASC (the same happened when I ran my girlfriend's chart too). Is this purely due to our natal placements or is this the case for everyone when looking at exact progressed new moon aspects??

I have a question if anyone can answer.
I have progressed lunar and solar eclipses. The solar eclipse will be conjoining with my north node. What would this mean? I can't find any information online. Is there a book perhaps that anyone can recommend?
I would imagine that eclipses hold a little bit of a different meaning than a regular new/full moon. Please correct me if I'm wrong in my assumption.

    • @astrocatherine
      @astrocatherine Год назад +2

Because the gregorian calendar is based off of the soli-lunar cycle of 30 days. It's true that the moon returns to the same degree every 27 days - there are 13 of these in a solar year, which is why this number was associated with women and therefore witches.

Personally, I think it is easier to view the lunation cycle in it's entirety as a 360 degree circle/cycle, it seems less confusing for me when I calculate the moon cycle in charts.
    New Moon 0-45 degrees
    Waxing Crescent 45-90 degrees
First Quarter Moon Phase 90-135 degrees
    Waxing Gibbous 135-180 degrees
    Full Moon 180-225 degrees
    Waning Gibbous 225-270 degrees
    Third Quarter Moon 270-315 degrees
    Dark Balsamic Moon 315-360 degrees
I find this easy to calculate, as I create the circle and then plot out the degree of the natal sun in its sign and the degree of the natal moon in its sign (according to the birth chart). Then I move COUNTER CLOCKWISE from the SUN to the MOON to calculate the moon phase, understanding that each SIGN has 30 degrees. I don't know but for me it seems less confusing. Your thoughts?
As for the Moon Phases/Cycles and its correlation to the Cycle of Seasons or Wheel of the Year,
Demetra George has a brilliant and comprehensive third chapter in her MYSTERIES OF THE DARK MOON: The Healing Power of the Dark Goddess, copyright 1992. She gives great detail regarding how the cycles are correlated with the Sabbats or Pagan Holy Days: Yule (Winter Solstice), Imbolc (February 1st), Ostara (Spring Equinox), Beltane (May Day), Litha (Summer Solstice), Lughnasa (many spellings for this one aka Lammas, August 1), Mabon (Autumn Equinox) and Samhain (October 31/November 1).
    great show! thank you!!!

Im not certain, but you could have been born during a 'Disseminating moon' phase..that is 90°-120° behind the Sun. If your Moon was 0°15` Libra and your Sun at 0°14 Aquarius, the Moon will have been 119° and 59' behind the Sun at birth. (I think??)
