this series is so interesting to me! you know, a good one to do might be Honda Tohru from Fruits Basket! I noticed that her polite Japanese seems a bit odd, I think because she's supposed to be mimicing her father's speech patterns? I would love to know the specifics of it, and I'm sure there are a lot of people who didn't even notice it! just a thought, keep up the great work! (◠‿・)-☆

The reason why she switches the speaking patterns is because she wants to influence Subaru into giving her information. She does not understands emotion and human interaction, so the first times she meets him she tries different ways to talk with him so that she can conquer his trust, but ends up looking strange to Subaru himself.

Is that mentioned in the light novel? I would have assumed it was because she holds herself to a higher standard than regular humanity, hence why she hates the people that cast the witches aside. She sees humans as lower and lesser intelligent beings as she has so much knowledge (being the witch of greed) that she sees Subaru as less than her and as such she should talk down to him instead of feminine, and when he doesn’t recognise her power or the situation he is in she is so shocked she reverts back to her feminine self.

    • @NexusBecauseWhyNot

@@matthew2000slater more or less this. She tries to instill fear into him, but he already knows he cannot die, so he just rushes the discussion to help Emilia and Echidna understands that authority or power doesn't falther him, so she starts to play into a hopeless woman. She hasn't read his mind yet, but she heard of Emilia and she thinks that maybe a woman would be much more efficient in her pursue of knowledge than just being opressive. All she does in that scene is calculated, she hasn't slipped up once during it xD

For some reason it seems to me that the "masculine" pattern of speech is used to ascertain dominance in some way and the "feminine" is more like to show submission or humility. So Echidna talks in a "masculine" pattern to show that she is in charge of the situation, but changes it to a more submissive tone when she wants something from Subaru or to make Subaru drop his guard since (spoiler alert) she is playing him... The same way, maybe, people use a more submissive pattern of speech when using Keigo to show humility.

While the difference in speech patterns to express emotional states may not translate in the subtitles to non-Japanese speakers, the tone of voice often does the same to express this.
Not saying your point is invalid at all, as I love the idea of my Japanese comprehension getting to a level where I can easily pick up on this, which is one of the reasons I enjoy this series of videos so much. (: just pointing out the skill of the seiyuu can express the same thing the writers are trying to express with speech patterns in their tone of voice when they deliver the lines.

I mean the whole point of the witches is that they are all driven by a single obsession to the point of lacking the multifaceted nature of humanity. @@hooman5501 I also remember when reading some chapter of Arc's 4 web novel, she also uses "Watashi" in speaking to Garfiel...when Garfiel did the trial. But when she speaks to the witches, Subaru and even Emiia, she then goes back in using "Buko" which I find it interesting....If I am correct, I had read this from a comment of someone who knows Japanese, according to that person, Buko was not just used by young men...it can be used as a sign of respect to someone...having to learned that, I had now understand why she uses Buko towards the witches since she shows respect to them as they are her kind of sisters. In Subaru...I also know why she did that because of the ulterior motive she has...which we've seen it s2 ep 12. But in Emilia's case...I just find it interesting that despite how she claims she had hated her...she still in somewhat shows a little bit respect for her...by using the term "Buko" For me it implies that there is really something deep going on between their connection.
Sorry if it got long..hehehhe. Just by thinking of it...gives me a lot of excitement for what about to come.

mmm if I am not wrong, it is the most formal way to say it, and it could be used, for example, when the president is given a speech or if you are talking to him, or if you are in a meeting with the higher ups of a big company or similar things that require utmost formality. So, it is not like you feel superior or anything like that.

It's the most polite and humble form of I.
However, there are still a few older women who use it on purpose in a certain way when no such politeness is required (like speaking to store cleark for example) to make look like she is of upper class (not self importance) but this won't work for a guy.
I assume watakushi was relatively new term (maybe after meiji?) or maybe had been known only among the upper class people before, so the use of such word makes one look like he/she is from the upper class.
      I'm Japanese.

Every time i see your video from some cool anime speaking analysis im excited as i love learning about weird words and dialects to just find out its just for total beginner :(
But.... if you look for next idea, i can see you are man of culture as well (and as im in the middle of 'trying' to read LN) you could do deeper analize of Shinobu from monogatari
Also for sake of channel growth, kimetsu would be great as movie just exloded. Even our god Shinkaisan was talking about it... but to be honest i dont remember any specific pattern
Still monogatari would ve great source for shinobu, oshino and pretty much every character with cool phrases like ii koto demo atta no kai or nandemo shiranai ha yo, shitteru koto dake etc
Also i know dubs suck, but subs? How the heck you translated shiranai mono wa nai sa into Everybody knows your name? :v
