  • JAPAN vs CANADA | Quarter Finals | Highlights | Men’s VNL 2024. Final Round Quarterfinals: Won against Canada in straight sets to advance to the semifinals Men's Nations League!
The final round of the Volleyball Nations League 2024 is being held in Lodz (Poland) from Thursday, June 27th.
On Thursday, the 27th (local time) in Poland, the Japanese men's national team, ranked 2nd in the FIVB world rankings (before the start of the match), faced off against Canada, ranked 9th in the world and having lost in full sets in the preliminary round, and won in straight sets 3-0 (26-24, 25-18, 26-24), advancing to the semifinals for the second consecutive tournament.
In the first set, Japan scored points with a service ace from Onodera Futoshi and a block from Ishikawa Yuki, and took a 11-7 lead. After that, Japan extended their lead with a second block from Ishikawa and another service ace. However, Canada showed tenacity and narrowed the gap with consecutive service aces and block points. Japan sent Miyaura Kento and Fukatsu Akihiro onto the court, but Canada scored a block point and the score was tied at 18-18. In the final stages, Sekita Masahiro's spike receive led to a point from Canada's pipe attack, and Sekita then scored a service ace to reach set point. Canada caught up and the game was at deuce, but Ishikawa's service ace made it 26-24. Japan won the close match and took the first set.
In the second set, both teams were stable with side outs. The game continued with neither team giving in. Then, Japan took two consecutive points from Sekita's serve to take the lead at 11-8. Japan got a one-touch on Canada's quick play, and their floor defense worked. Onodera also shut out Canada's pipe attack, and they maintained their lead at 15-11. Tatsunori Otsuka's service ace widened the gap, and Miyaura, who came in as a substitute, broke down the gap with his serve and scored points, and Japan won the set 25-18.
The opening of the third set was similar to the second set, but libero Yamamoto Tomohiro's spike receive led to a break and a score of 7-5. However, Canada's powerful serves then disrupted their serve receives, turning the game around to 13-15. As Canada continued to lead by two points, Onodera's service ace put Japan within one point at 17-18. From there, Japan began to fight back, and towards the end of the set, Ishikawa's service ace and block put Japan at match point. Canada showed tenacity and the game was tied at deuce, but in the end, Ishikawa, who had the most points of both teams that day with 26, spiked to make it 26-24. Japan won in straight sets, 3-0, against Canada, who they had lost to in the preliminary round.
    Yuki Ishikawa
"It was an important match as it was the first match of the finals, so I'm glad we were able to win 3-0. Canada is also a very strong team, and we lost to them in the qualifying round. They are not an opponent to let our guard down against, and if we showed any weakness, it would have been like the second set. That was one thing we needed to work on. We were able to use our block defense against Canada's attacks, and the serves of myself, Onodera (Futoshi), Sekita (Makida), and Otsuka (Tatsunori) worked well. Our goal in this tournament is to win in the semi-finals. The semi-finals will be important so that we can experience the atmosphere and stage of the finals. Everyone is playing in this final tournament with the Olympics in mind, so this will be an important match in the run up to the Olympics."
