I haven't read the book in ages, but I remember it was really good, and I do recommend it. My favorite fact about the story is that originally Stephen King envisioned it as a short story ending with Paul getting murdered by Annie, fed to Misery the Pig, and Annie uses his skin to bind the manuscript she forced him to write. King said Paul turned out to be more resourceful than he expected and he ended up changing his concept for the ending because nobody wants to root for a guy for the length of a book only to find out the pig eats him :D
oh WOW, that would be a crazy ending to see on screen lol. After buster, I needed a happy ending in some capacity. I'm definitely going to read misery and christine, maybe later in the year so it's away from my memory :)
What a cool type of forshadowing when the sherriff at 54min says "Call me Buster, everybody does"- as it immediately suggests it won't be the last time they talk.
Kathy Bates' character was so terrifying in this movie. But that is only testament to what a magnificent Oscar winning performance she delivered. Also notable James Caan of course as Paul Sheldon, Richard Farnsworth as Buster, and the legendary star of both the stage and screen, Lauren Bacall, who portrayed Paul Sheldon's literary agent.
The old kind of matches you can light on anything (like a fingernail or sandpaper) are hard to find because they are so dangerous. Modern "safety matches" rely on a chemical in the strip to light the match.
I love her in Titanic and I admire her in Dolores Claiborne (in the role that was written specially for her by Mr Stephen King himself, according to his own words - that`s a peak appreciation of the actress`s talent!)
@@MariaStarkTargaryen how did I not realize that was her in Titanic... to be fair I only watched that movie when I was younger but maybe I should revisit!!

I love this movie, but they really toned down Annie's violence and insanity from the book in order to make sure they didn't make her a typical slasher villain. 1. Instead of simply breaking his feet in the hobbling scene, she completely cuts his foot off and cauterized the wound with a blowtorch! 2. She curses more frequently when she's frustrated and intentionally hurts Paul more often; when he mentions the pages have bad ink on them, she cuts his thumb completely off saying he's been ungrateful. 😨 3. Her killings were far more gruesome in the book. Instead of shooting the sheriff in the chest, she stabs him and ran over his head with a lawnmower. Before Sheldon, she also killed neighboring family, her own father, her college roommate, the babies in the hospital, and two previous lovers. The movie is still fantastic. One of the best Stephen King adaptations and Kathy Bates definitely earned that Oscar.
The book is definitely worth reading. It takes you inside Paul's thoughts and feelings, and that adds another layer to the story. The movie is great, but imo the book is even better.
Both the movie and the book are amazing. The book focuses more on Paul's struggle with addiction and pain than the movie. But Kathy Bates portrayed Annie to a T. She earned that Oscar.

I know Annie Wilkes is a fictional character, but she reminds me so much of my mother's ex-husband. He would fly into a rage at given moment breaking things and screaming, punching walls, nothing was ever good enough, it was terrifying living with him and as soon as i turned 18 i moved away and vowed to never live under the same roof with another person ever again and have been living alone happily for over 20 years. But kudos to Kathy Bates with her acting.

It's not snowmagedon. Not every country road and driveway gets plowed after a snow storm. If the temperatures stay below freezing, the snow remains for days or weeks. Just because the phone lines from NY to the Sherriff are working doesn't mean the ones from the Wilks farm or neighborhood aren't still down. Not sure how you can double tap with a typewriter she fell on. My dad also used to say "Mr Man" all the time too after watching this. He was a US Air Force veteran and his first base was in St Anthony's, Newfoundland. If you like James Caan you can see him as the dad in Elf, the brother in The Godfather, and in a movie no reactor has ever covered; Rollerball.
This is my rating for the movie and book, and I know my rating system is weird, but I don't care. The movie is a perfect 10 out of 10. The book is far superior to the movie, so my rating for tne book is 20 out of 10. Only book I have read multiple times. The suffering Paul experience in the movie was a cakewalk compared to the Paul from the book.
So everybody talks about how scary Kathy Bates’ Annie Wilkes is in this movie and how it’s Oscar-worthy. But I think the REAL testament to her acting ability, is how you are truly pulled in to every aspect of her personalities. I’ve noticed many reactors being confusingly elated whenever Annie feels joy and then they too, share in that joy. You know she’s clinically insane, but you still recognize the relatability in another human being, even if you’re not sure why, and that is transcendent.
@ Yes. As well as the scene when he asks her to dinner and she shows up with that smile all dressed up, and her hair looking cute and pinned back. You have that inner voice of conscience reminding you, “Now don’t forget, she’s 🦇 sh*t cray cray.”

The director always filmed from Paul's eyes to Annie's. So the theatre can feel Paul's pain.
