- Traveling New Zealand: Welcome to Glacier Country! Situated on New Zealand's west coast, this region features two glaciers, Fox Glacier and Franz Josef Glacier. Both have hiking trails which allow you to get up close to the glaciers.
If you want to climb the glacier itself, you can only do so on a guided tour, ice climbing equipment is provided by the tour company. Another way to experience amazing views is by helicopter, they'll fly you over the glacier and do snow landings as well. Helicopter tours are expensive but well worth it on a clear day.
Fox Glacier was the most interesting, you're able to get closer to the ice, the glacier views through the rainforest are gorgeous and hiking through the rainforest is an awesome experience on it's own. Franz Josef Glacier has some fantastic waterfalls along the hike, though it's a longer trek along the rocks.
We traveled north along the coast from Glacier Country to Hokitika. About 30 km inland from Hokitika is Hokitika Gorge. An easy 10-15 minute walk through the rainforest will bring you to a suspension bridge and a stunning river of creamy turquoise-blue water. Visiting this gorge is definitely worth the drive!
After Hokitika, we traveled to Greymouth. North of Greymouth are the Pancake Rocks & Blow Holes walk path, overlooking the Tasman Sea. If you're passing through the area, take a driving break and enjoy a leisure walk, don't forget your camera. There's also a cafe and visitor center nearby.

Oh my goodness, this is so beautiful! Glaciers always amaze me, but also kind of make me sad because they're these enormous, powerful and ancient structures being destroyed so quickly by human irresponsibility

The Fox Glacier and the Franz Joseph Glacier in South Westland on the West Coast of the South Island are two very nice Glaciers to explore

Hi guys, Glad you enjoyed your trip over here. As far as the prices of things go please bear in mind that all of the small towns from Wanaka through Haast and up to the glaciers have to charge slightly higher prices for pretty much anything only because of their isolation and the increased costs of getting stuff to them. Prices in the larger towns and cities are noticeably better, especially when you factor in the exchange rate.

That area looks a lot like the Clark Fork river in western Montana below Glacier Park.

I feel like everyone forgets that New Zealand is an Island and that is why everything is so expensive. It's expensive to ship goods there, they are isolated ...
How long will you guys have traveled for when it is all said and done? What an incredible life changing experience you guys must be having!
Food is expensive because these places are relatively remote or not so busy, so in order to stay open they must have higher prices. The only downfall to New Zealand is that most tourists are back packers on cheap budgets and kiwis are typically known to buy or make lunch before hand and eat in parks or have picnics so owners are pressured to charge more in smaller shops and cafes.
I think this is the best place of all that you guys have visiting... In my opinion, it just so perfect except for the prices hahahahah... One question, do you actually know if the water from those rivers or river because I am not sure if it is only river or more.. We'll if the water is drinkable? And why the beautyful Acuablue color??

Nope, food here is some of the most expensive in the world. Local produce is cheap but eating out is expensive
so, next stop... Portugal?

Food sounds expensive - always wanted to go there but that there (pancakes and more) is Scandinavian prices, ma'aaaan........did you feel ripped off? - or did the natural beauty high sort'a even things out?
Please if anyone comes to New Zealand, bring decent walking or tramping shoes. Not ugg boots!
