      Yeah they say John Barnes was Martin Luther King Of English football and Ian Wright was Malcom X who didn’t compromise his blackness and cultural while playing, but it is crazy that now both players have retire Ian Wright has become the establishment and John Barnes has become the racism radical.

    I’m British black and a Liverpool fan and I have to Arsenal have more black fans than any team in any sport in the world. They were the first big European team to have lots of black players in the 1980s and win trophies but they became the team of black people around the world in the early 2000s where they went unbeaten the whole season and won titles playing amazing flash soccer with a 95% black team. That made them popular with black kids around the world. It is the team in England you see the most black faces in the crowd. Spike Lee, Joel Embid, Idris Elba and Daniel Kaluuya are all fans of this team.
    Liverpool are also a team with a lot of black fans due to a player called John Barnes you should react to him, he is one of the forget greats because his peak years happened before the coverage of soccer exploded. Kobe Bryant said John Barnes was his first sporting as a Liverpool fan in Italy. And Dr Dre became a Liverpool fan watch John Barnes play at this peak.

    • @Samuel-hd3cp
      @Samuel-hd3cp 6 месяцев назад

      Liverpool are interesting. Back in the day they were as racist as any, worse than Man Utd. Howard Gayle had a shittime there.
      But then when Barnes signed and they saw the awful way he was treated they did a full 180 and now they're anti-racist and left wing.
      Mo Salah has had a similar impact on making their fan base tolerant of Muslims.tttttttttttt

    • @dirkbogarde44
      @dirkbogarde44 6 месяцев назад

      Which is kind of racist in itself.

    • @zigzung5569
      @zigzung5569 6 месяцев назад

      Howard Gayle was the first black player at Liverpool a few years before John Barnes. Gayle was born and raised in Liverpool as well. Disappointing that both Gayle and Barnes have spoken about the racism that was prevalent amongst their own Liverpool team mates.
      I've been an Arsenal supporter for more than 40 years, i grew up 20 minutes away from the old stadium Highbury, and the new one the Emirates.

    • @hughtube5154
      @hughtube5154 6 месяцев назад

      And then Louis Suarez joined, and Liverpool fans had to pretend screaming, "Negro," to a black man (Patrice Evra) wasn't racist.

    • @Delboy0
      @Delboy0 6 месяцев назад

      @@zigzung5569 That is why John Barnes is important because he actually changed attitudes of Liverpool fans. He tells the story when he joined Liverpool in the mid 1980s many Liverpool fans were unhappy about him joining the team because Liverpool was the most successful team with complete white players from Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England. He scores two goals in his first game and a fan tells him, you are not as black as I thought. Because back then White British people used to believe black people and players were inferior due to the colonial attitudes.
      John Barnes ends up being the best player in the best team in England and it is the first time the best player in England is undeniably black, that leads to him being racially abused by fans of other teams more because they didn’t like their notions of superiority being challenged. But he changed attitudes of Liverpool fans where they became more tolerant of black players.
      When Arsenal became the dominant team in the at the end of 1990s their dominance led to more teams in England buying black players because they had a nearly all black team and were destroying everyone. And what really changed things things was Arsenal and Chelsea dominating youth academy football for 20 years with 100% local black kids and their domination led all big teams to fill their academies black kids and this has led them to the quality jump in England in the last 6 years where they have been winning so many trophies at youth level and made English football more black.

      @@soloplays4557 the issue is some clubs were at the forefront of promoting racism while others were fighting against it.
      And those roots and elements are still there and comes up in recent incidents over the last few years. Don’t think all those combat 18 peeps suddenly stopped supporting the clubs etc
      Yes things have changed especially with the international support etc.

    Arsenal used to be London Irish, but had a mixed crew back in the 1980s when most didn't and most were very racist.
    Also Arsenal recruited hard in South London -Rocastle, Davis, Thomas. That made a North London team very popular in South East London.

    Slavery has been a thing for tens of thousands of years, all over the world, among all races. But why it's more talked about in America is probably cause of the Civil war. If you go far enough back slavery wasn't always about race. It was more about conquest and being captured and now you're a slave. Even Vikings that failed with their conquests became slaves to whatever area they attacked and also took white british slaves back to Scandinavia.

    • @tommy_egan
      @tommy_egan 6 месяцев назад

      But in America it was about race. And regarding the slavery that took place in Europe there were places such as Greece and the Roman empire which had specific rules for the keeping and treatment of slaves and ways that slaves could earn their freedom. Slaves were even paid for their work and the church got involved and there were rules and laws in canon law to ensure that slaves were not too badly mistreated. In America these things were not present and because of the racial element slaves in America were completely dehumanized. That didn't occur in Europe to white slaves. Thats why it's more talked about.

    • @ptotheetother
      @ptotheetother 6 месяцев назад

      @@tommy_egan Absolutely. I even said "slavery wasn't always about race". I'm well aware that it was about race with the slaves in America. Reason I said so was because they didn't seem to be aware of that racism or slavery was a thing outside of the states.
      And the whole Civil war is definitely a reason for slavery being a big talking point in the US. It's a big reason why people study American slavery or history in general. Because of previous wars.

    Even before Ian Wright, we had Paul Davis, Michael Thomas and David Rocastle plus other black players coming through the academy. 40 years ago when i started following Arsenal the racism was horrific. I followed the team home and away and you had to travel in groups in order to get to games and home safely. Arsenal was the only club and stadium where black people felt safe. Ian Wright was from the streets and he epitomises on the pitch what we were feeling.

They're not facing racism like you do here, it's the opposite you're facing racism like they do in Europe. Never forget the source of slavery and colonialism, Europeans started this by order of the Pope. Look up, "Dum diversas ". We need to share knowledge with each other, we're all in the same boat.

    I have much respect for Robbie, but hip hop did not start from reggae. It was a grass roots movement in the hoods of NYC created by African Americans (I am not African America). It was a natural progression of their culture from the way they talk in NYC and from their musical legacy such as Motion, Parliament, James Brown, Michael Jackson, Prince and many many more...!
