Okay but you could actually be onto something. Shio is young enough where all of this trauma could manifest in Dissociative Identity Disorder, and because Satou is one of the most important figures in Shio's life, Satou could become a DID alter in Shio. Obviously it wouldn't be Satou literally possessing Shio, but a construct created by Shio herself in order to feel better and protected, but yeah...certainly similar.
the cycle of abuse and how abuse affects kids is so ... i cant even put it into words. there are children in this world like shio, who think its their fault, who think that they know "love" from the people who have groomed and abused them.
I agree with what you said, but to be fair satou was also confuse on what "love" Is cause she had a terrible aunt, and in her eyes, this is the best way to protect shio(which is clearly not). That's why at the end she finally realized on what "love" actually is and sacrifice herself to protect shio. So even though she became the abuser, it all started from her being the victim

I think she realized in the end she didn’t love her like that.. she loved her like family. That’s why she died protecting her. She never had family that was really good to her so she didn’t realize what that kind of love was. “It’s an even deeper kind of love for Shio-Chan” She was never a monster, she was just another scared and confused child who realized too late she was hurting another child like she was hurt. It makes her death ultimately more tragic. Regardless the damage was done and she blurred the lines with Shio, and her brother can see that in her.

I agree. To me, Satou had not known any sort of real love up until that point in her life. She was confused as to how to express it. I know people think the wedding imagery is supposed to be romantic, but let’s not forget that’s the most recognizable act of love in human society. Satou realized her “deeper love” in her final moments as that of family. The way she cradled Shio in her arms right before they hit the ground is exemplified the mother/daughter dynamic perfectly. A lover would prefer to die with their partner, but a parent wants their child to continue living. Satou was like a mother Shio never had all along.
well he just wanted a happy family Shio was happy with Satou then he came and thats when things got bad for Satou so Shio has a good reason to feel resentment or at least thats my opinion on it

Also satou is 16, Shio is 8, one of them is 4 years away from being an adult (in Japan, two years for US and other areas) ik they don't have a sexual love but the fact they get married is really fucking weird.
While yes, what Satou did was essentially the textbook definition of kidnapping....Shio wasn't manipulated into rejecting her brother, she was a baby when Yuna ran away with her, so she doesn't remember him, or have any memories with him, to her he's just a stranger. Reason why they say the same vows is because she used to say them with Yuna Speaking of going 'we're family' might not persuade her either as the only family member she has any memories of did kinda leave her on the streets to die
It’s been a little over two years since I finished this anime and that final scene with shio talking about satou in the hospital still gives me goosebumps Happy sugar Life is undoubtedly an underrated gem and a certified Frosty
Honestly- I hope that despite what the ending wants us to believe, Shio will recover with time and therapy (and hopefully a removal of those rings and the hair tie) and a loving family. She's still so young, and with only a little time she completely forgot her own mother and brother. As much as EVERYONE in this show has mental issues- I'm hoping Shio will at least have every chance to defeat hers.

@@tertiaritus y'know, There was an anime called "kore wa zombie desu ka", it's only had a second season, and an outstanding story, but it wasn't even animated halfway through, as the manga was about to get over, but the heavy intense stuff was gonna happen in the end as in the manga, but not even were halfway through the story. It's not an imbalance, as the rest of the anime was fun as hell. The same case with "Mahou shoujo ikusei keikaku", it was fucking great, wasn't fully animated, it's been soo long when I watched it, but the name still gets recommended in my typing suggestions.

I actually think shio's thought at the end is correct. Her brother is violent and her mother is mentally unstable. If she does not find love and happiness within herself, it is hard to live. As the memories with Satou leads to her willingness to live, it might be good.
I touched on that notion in my Happy Sugar Life video. Ironically, it was was probably the best thing she could do for herself to start living a healthier, happier life.
I just finished this anime. I'm crying. I have no idea how to put my feelings into words. even though satou was the bad guy I couldn't help but hope she would get her happy ending. It wasn't the ending she wanted but she got her happy ending. Im glad Shio is happy. This was an amazing anime.

Satou dies protecting Shio, the one moment where she isn't being selfish about her love for Shio. She never knew love her entire life and thought Shio was the key to finding love so she took care of her like a mother. Ultimately, she finally understands that "love is selfless" in her final moments and let's Shio live.

I was feeling bad for brother ...this boy was badly abused by his father ..his father tortuerd him ..wreck his nails ...at end when father was died ( Actually boy's mother took revenge back by poisoning in Father's meal) he was happy for moment ...but mother was out of mental state ( Cuase she was alone for 5 yrs extra without any decent living style made her unstable mental condition) After that...much incidents happened in boy life..his misson was bring back his sister..he lived in streets without eating ...sleeping at road or with newspaper as pilow ,far worse condition..when teenager bullying him as homeless😢

When i saw the scene it reminds me of the cover of the anime and i was somehow .... impressed? It was the moment i realized literally everthing of the anime is so metaphorically. The names (Satuo = sugar | Shio = salt), the glass vessel (symbolic for the heart, filled with sweet candy or pure bitterness) and even the cover fits perfectly with the endscene but nobody will understand it unless he/she watched the last episode
to me satou died with knowing what love she needed most. shio lived without knowing that love satou left behind and being a kid not knowing what love is, she's pretty much broken in a sense where she's no longer being able to love anyone other than satou. i love this story went from romance yuri love to family love but sadly being shio where she is. she will never understand that. growing up wondering to the day she died
I'm honestly happy that satou died, i felt nothing but loathing for her the whole story, she was a phycopathic, manipulative monster that ruined poor shio worse than what she already was, and ruined her future to live with her brother that went through living hell to be with her and have a happy life. She was a monster with no empathy and only cared about what her definition of love was and getting what she wanted, no matter the end and who it hurt, and for that i have no empathy for her.

Idk mannn. Satou is kinda a dope character. Yeah. There was some Stockholm in there but look at the full picture. Someone broken like Satou and someone abandoned like Shio isnt so uncommon in our world. Anime like this really exposes the stuff that goes on in the world right under our noses. If you hate Satou, that’s fine but appreciate the character that’s rare. Really when it all comes down to it, she just wanted something pure and oversheltered Shio from corruption while unintentionally continuing the madness.
I wouldn’t say Kidnapped Shio is the word neither. What Taiyo was about to do in episode3-4 was kidnapping. He was luring her with the false pretense of finding Satou and in sick irony, got raped himself.Satou really just saved that girl and sheltered her way too much
Finally someone understands,satou is a so well written and so the anime is,idk how the one who wrote this got the idea but.. it's just so beautiful yet so painful and crazy to think that maybe somewhere and someday, this story happened or will happen. I mean... look at there relationship from sato's pov,she doesn't even do dirty things with shio because she loves pure things,sato sees shio a lonely girl that needs care and love,while shio sees satou a poor girl trying to relay on love and continue living even if the emptiness and bitterness fills her jar.. i never understood satou's ways until this episode,i love this ending so much and i find it wholesome! I love how she thinks that it's early for shio to die now and that it'd be a waste of the soul and the life of her most beloved wich she actually realises she loves in a motherly way. Thank you! As much as I agree happy endings should be a thing in any stories, I cannot and will never see that happen for Shio's family. This is going to be controversial, but Satou literally looked after Shio better than her own family. Both Satou and Shio's family cling to Shio for emotional support, but the difference is Satou is willing to provide, even take on more jobs to support herself and Shio, while Shio's family cannot do such a thing. Shio's mother, shown more in-depth in the manga, doesn't know how to raise a child, expect Shio to remain pure and even rely on Asahi for his approval to make her think she's doing okay with raising her children. Noted: an adult seeming her son's words to make her think she's doing a good enough job, when she doesn't know she should be sending him to (pre-)school and make sure he's social enough to learn how to interact with others. She was also reluctant to leave her son to the abusive father, but it's even more annoying for her to expect Asahi to endure all the abuse himself and then support the family when the father finally dies. Who does that? Asahi is still a kid! Maybe it would have been better if their mother knew how to find some sort of support, but in the world of Happy Sugar Life, there's no such thing and they'll belittle the mother for not being able to work and raise her children (again shown in the manga). And let's not forget she thought it was for the best to abandon Shio after that breakdown. It wasn't right to slap her, but also not right to abandon her because on the belief she would be safer. What's more she commited a crime, killing the father (again thinking it's for the best) and maybe thought there was a chance to rekindle the family if Shio ever comes back. That's...not gonna happen, with no support and that mentally broken, it wouldn't be surprising for the mother to abandon Shio again when her not able to raise them. And with Asahi, he's just as bad. Maybe because he's raised to be mature to make things easy for his mother, but he doesn't know anything on what's best for him and Shio to begin with. He's a kid too, and just as crazy and rely on Shio for emotional support. He sees himself as heroic and mature to take on the brunt of his dad's abuse for his mother and Shio's sake, but Asahi himself and his mother enabled that. Again, maybe with no support in Happy Sugar Life, but that's not a way to do things. Endure pain AND expect someone else to remain pure and act as their guiding light and support? A literal child who doesn't know anything, not given anything but expect to act, as Shio said to Satou at one point, a doll? Overall, no one is sane in this series, but expecting Shio to live happily with her family is impossible. No one dealing with Shio is correct, and that includes Asahi and his mother. Sorry for the ramble, but sort of wanted to get this off my chest.

this scene makes me sad even though the anime is dark but the happiness of satou and shio really touches my heart 😢 during the initial episode where satou takes care of shio who is still innocent and kind while living life with sato. after seeing the ending it made me touched until finally shio didn't forget satou and had imitated satou's nature. the manga isnt even animated and i swear it made me cry even more even though i already knew the ending. one lil detail that made me cry so hard, spoilers : so when shio grew up,she went to that burnt building to their old appartement and sato welcomed her in the door and stuff. they sat together and talked then when shio had to leave,they showed her old self standing wit her back to us and the door chain wasnt closed or idk how to word that,but then shio turned to us as her younger self and the door chain was closed i swear that shi made me cry so hard

Everything could have been solved if Satou had just adopted Shio using Autie's legal powers (Shio was thrown away by her mother so it's possible). That way she could legally chase Asahi away. Then they could still do their usual Interactions behind closed doors, as long as they keep up appearances outside.
Just a note here: there's another volume that mentions what happened to Shio afterwards. Good news? She's not after another child to replace as Satou. Bad news? Her love is still strong for Satou for many years. As of 16, Shio still enjoys her life as she carries her love for Satou within her, as if she is still around. She even sneaks into the now abandoned, burnt apartment to live out her time with Satou (now represented as a teddy bear) whenever she can. This time tho, Shio is the one who goes out, while "Satou" awaits for her in their burnt castle. Nothing is mentioned about Asahi and their mum, but I doubt they could get custody of her since they can't even look after themselves and Asahi is still a child who is too selfless to know proper care.
Didn't the manga end like in 2019? Its weird that they are making one more volume considering the last chapter of volume 10 literally titles "Happy Sugar Life".
If the brother was finally on the roof and apparently survived without injury because he came towards you in the hospital, why did they jump if the fire was not strong enough to take over the full roof region. After all, Shio can still implement her will afterwards, which is why no one takes Satou, Shio away... - So why the jump?
This anime was so messed up... full of nuts stuff - her manager, and then, it ended with Satou and the kid just killing themselves together, with the kid surviving. The thing that was the most disturbing in the ending was how there was happy music in the background, and sunshine, and really just happy things as they fell to their death - what in the heck is that even supposed to mean???
There wasn't a lot of murder, but the murder was so - I dunno, something about it made it just so, well, brutal and horrible. The details hurt my eyes. Also, the aunt is totally messed up.
She murdered four people. First one was the original owner of that flat, then those two guys at the park and finally her own friend. She's also responsible for the people who died in the arson.
I had to see this again because I just couldn't stop thinking of this and being sad from it (and crying too) but I enjoyed this anime, it just made me sad bc this gave me some Doki Doki Exit Music vibes from it and It was l\just like flashbacks all over again..

I think she realized in the end she didn’t love her like that.. she loved her like family. That’s why she died protecting her. She never had family that was really good to her so she didn’t realize what that kind of love was. “It’s an even deeper kind of love for Shio-Chan” She was never a monster, she was just another scared and confused child who realized too late she was hurting another child like she was hurt. It makes her death ultimately more tragic.
Regardless the damage was done and she blurred the lines with Shio, and her brother can see that in her.

I agree. To me, Satou had not known any sort of real love up until that point in her life. She was confused as to how to express it. I know people think the wedding imagery is supposed to be romantic, but let’s not forget that’s the most recognizable act of love in human society. Satou realized her “deeper love” in her final moments as that of family. The way she cradled Shio in her arms right before they hit the ground is exemplified the mother/daughter dynamic perfectly. A lover would prefer to die with their partner, but a parent wants their child to continue living. Satou was like a mother Shio never had all along.
That ending literally gave me shivers. So good... so morbid...

Honestly- I hope that despite what the ending wants us to believe, Shio will recover with time and therapy (and hopefully a removal of those rings and the hair tie) and a loving family.
She's still so young, and with only a little time she completely forgot her own mother and brother. As much as EVERYONE in this show has mental issues- I'm hoping Shio will at least have every chance to defeat hers.

There was an anime called "kore wa zombie desu ka", it's only had a second season, and an outstanding story, but it wasn't even animated halfway through, as the manga was about to get over, but the heavy intense stuff was gonna happen in the end as in the manga, but not even were halfway through the story. It's not an imbalance, as the rest of the anime was fun as hell. The same case with "Mahou shoujo ikusei keikaku", it was fucking great, wasn't fully animated, it's been soo long when I watched it, but the name still gets recommended in my typing suggestions.
I watched it many years ago and I still remember it took me one week to get over this scene. It's beautiful and extremely depressing, although the anime was very creepy.

If the story were to have a continuation, I would have had shio becoming a serial killer and kidnapper who kills bad/abusive parents and then takes their now orphan children and raises them as her own.

I touched on that notion in my Happy Sugar Life video. Ironically, it was was probably the best thing she could do for herself to start living a healthier, happier life.

Ultimately, she finally understands that "love is selfless" in her final moments and let's Shio live.

When i saw the scene it reminds me of the cover of the anime and i was somehow .... impressed?
It was the moment i realized literally everthing of the anime is so metaphorically. The names (Satuo = sugar | Shio = salt), the glass vessel (symbolic for the heart, filled with sweet candy or pure bitterness) and even the cover fits perfectly with the endscene but nobody will understand it unless he/she watched the last episode
to me satou died with knowing what love she needed most. shio lived without knowing that love satou left behind and being a kid not knowing what love is, she's pretty much broken in a sense where she's no longer being able to love anyone other than satou.
i love this story went from romance yuri love to family love but sadly being shio where she is. she will never understand that. growing up wondering to the day she died

Idk mannn. Satou is kinda a dope character. Yeah. There was some Stockholm in there but look at the full picture. Someone broken like Satou and someone abandoned like Shio isnt so uncommon in our world. Anime like this really exposes the stuff that goes on in the world right under our noses. If you hate Satou, that’s fine but appreciate the character that’s rare. Really when it all comes down to it, she just wanted something pure and oversheltered Shio from corruption while unintentionally continuing the madness.
I wouldn’t say Kidnapped Shio is the word neither. What Taiyo was about to do in episode3-4 was kidnapping. He was luring her with the false pretense of finding Satou and in sick irony, got raped himself.Satou really just saved that girl and sheltered her way too much

Finally someone understands,satou is a so well written and so the anime is,idk how the one who wrote this got the idea but.. it's just so beautiful yet so painful and crazy to think that maybe somewhere and someday, this story happened or will happen. This anime has many more hidden and beautiful meanings and i can tell this anime was the most heartwarming anime i've ever seen.
I mean... look at there relationship from sato's pov,she doesn't even do dirty things with shio because she loves pure things,sato sees shio a lonely girl that needs care and love,while shio sees satou a poor girl trying to relay on love and continue living even if the emptiness and bitterness fills her jar.. i never understood satou's ways until this episode,i love this ending so much and i find it wholesome! I love how she thinks that it's early for shio to die now and that it'd be a waste of the soul and the life of her most beloved wich she actually realises she loves in a motherly way.
Even the things sato does with shio like bathing and kissing and chatting is what her aunt taught her, satou is still a child and she wasn't even well raised so she's rlly trying so hard to not do what her aunt did (traumatizing shio,RAPING SHIO..)

Can't judge the series too hard but it's hard to want to be on any side because they're all mentally deranged in some way or form - supporting anyone is here unjustifiable. The only one I feel bad for Shouko. The brother is somewhat okay but is delusional to bring Shio back, her family is abusive.
Thank you! As much as I agree happy endings should be a thing in any stories, I cannot and will never see that happen for Shio's family. This is going to be controversial, but Satou literally looked after Shio better than her own family. Both Satou and Shio's family cling to Shio for emotional support, but the difference is Satou is willing to provide, even take on more jobs to support herself and Shio, while Shio's family cannot do such a thing.
Shio's mother, shown more in-depth in the manga, doesn't know how to raise a child, expect Shio to remain pure and even rely on Asahi for his approval to make her think she's doing okay with raising her children. Noted: an adult seeming her son's words to make her think she's doing a good enough job, when she doesn't know she should be sending him to (pre-)school and make sure he's social enough to learn how to interact with others. She was also reluctant to leave her son to the abusive father, but it's even more annoying for her to expect Asahi to endure all the abuse himself and then support the family when the father finally dies. Who does that? Asahi is still a kid! Maybe it would have been better if their mother knew how to find some sort of support, but in the world of Happy Sugar Life, there's no such thing and they'll belittle the mother for not being able to work and raise her children (again shown in the manga). And let's not forget she thought it was for the best to abandon Shio after that breakdown. It wasn't right to slap her, but also not right to abandon her because on the belief she would be safer. What's more she commited a crime, killing the father (again thinking it's for the best) and maybe thought there was a chance to rekindle the family if Shio ever comes back. That's...not gonna happen, with no support and that mentally broken, it wouldn't be surprising for the mother to abandon Shio again when her not able to raise them.
And with Asahi, he's just as bad. Maybe because he's raised to be mature to make things easy for his mother, but he doesn't know anything on what's best for him and Shio to begin with. He's a kid too, and just as crazy and rely on Shio for emotional support. He sees himself as heroic and mature to take on the brunt of his dad's abuse for his mother and Shio's sake, but Asahi himself and his mother enabled that. Again, maybe with no support in Happy Sugar Life, but that's not a way to do things. Endure pain AND expect someone else to remain pure and act as their guiding light and support? A literal child who doesn't know anything, not given anything but expect to act, as Shio said to Satou at one point, a doll?
Overall, no one is sane in this series, but expecting Shio to live happily with her family is impossible. No one dealing with Shio is correct, and that includes Asahi and his mother.

Just a note here: there's another volume that mentions what happened to Shio afterwards.
Good news? She's not after another child to replace as Satou.
Bad news? Her love is still strong for Satou for many years. As of 16, Shio still enjoys her life as she carries her love for Satou within her, as if she is still around. She even sneaks into the now abandoned, burnt apartment to live out her time with Satou (now represented as a teddy bear) whenever she can. This time tho, Shio is the one who goes out, while "Satou" awaits for her in their burnt castle. Nothing is mentioned about Asahi and their mum, but I doubt they could get custody of her since they can't even look after themselves and Asahi is still a child who is too selfless to know proper care.

If the brother was finally on the roof and apparently survived without injury because he came towards you in the hospital, why did they jump if the fire was not strong enough to take over the full roof region.
After all, Shio can still implement her will afterwards, which is why no one takes Satou, Shio away... - So why the jump?
This anime was so messed up... full of nuts stuff - her manager, and then, it ended with Satou and the kid just killing themselves together, with the kid surviving. The thing that was the most disturbing in the ending was how there was happy music in the background, and sunshine, and really just happy things as they fell to their death - what in the heck is that even supposed to mean???
There wasn't a lot of murder, but the murder was so - I dunno, something about it made it just so, well, brutal and horrible. The details hurt my eyes. Also, the aunt is totally messed up.
Satou never kidnapped a child though? She rescued an abandoned child?? The problem is the fact that she’s obsessed with a child and murdered someone.
She murdered four people. First one was the original owner of that flat, then those two guys at the park and finally her own friend. She's also responsible for the people who died in the arson.
I had to see this again because I just couldn't stop thinking of this and being sad from it (and crying too) but I enjoyed this anime, it just made me sad bc this gave me some Doki Doki Exit Music vibes from it and It was l\just like flashbacks all over again..
