this is amazing not because of the features you're talking about but it is because of the simplicity, cuz for having exactly the same result in my studio i used to use a Mixing Console, Patch Bay, A\D Converter, Interface, CD\Tape Rack, lots of wires and cables and finally the beautiful time delay :D but with this setup i can run the whole process easily with no latency. Genius people :)
Hey Fab! Have you done an update of how to use UA Apollo running LUNA with D-Box? Just switched over the LUNA and trying to get up the learning curve. Your videos are always VERY helpful!
VIDEO FORGOT TO MENTION ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT DETAILS: When using outboard gear (which most here are probably using) you should send the summing inputs to a row in the bottom (ins are typically on bottom) of your patch bay so you can insert outboard gear between the apollo and the dbox such as a good mixbuss comp or a nice bax EQ etc. This is crucial info. Otherwise great video, thumbs up
Now that was very informative. Great job on this vid, and all the others for that matter. It's nice to see the breakdown of the connections and why you do it that way!!
Hello Im trying to get this Dbox and apollo hookedup the way you have explained in this vid But the Uad console 2 is different from yours theres no Spidif to check on or off please help been at this for days can't get the DAW on the Dbox to do anything Please Please Help Thank You
Hello Fab, Made all my connections with Dangerous D Box and the Apollo Audio Interface. Can I connect my Art Pro Channel II Compressor to a Line input on the Apollo. I have a"" Y cable" , Tip-Comp In Return, Ring Comp Out Send, I/4 TRS for the Line input For Outboard Compressor / EQ / Mic Pre amp. Thanks, Gene
@7:32 when talking about analog summing, correct me if I'm wrong, but this seems like a workaround to be able to do unison preamp recording like the new BF Apollos?... Can anyone correct me???
OK this is a silver face Apollo and an older version of the dangerous d box. My question is: do you still recommend this setup with the newest versions of both? (Apollo x and redesigned Dbox)
Interesting... So how do you monitor your computer output? I now have my macpro out (minijack ) connected to the analog in on the D-box. So if I would like to change that ( connect output of the Apollo to the analog in ) How are you guys monitoring computer sound, like youtube and or itunes ? Great video btw Cheers Stan
Hey Fab, do u think the d-box is a good companion for the upcoming Apollo 16 especially considering that it has headphone outs or is it better suited for the original Apollo?
Fab...great video as always. Since you're discussing monitoring, I have a simple question...where would you connect a sub in this setup? I currently have two KRK monitors, but low-end has been an issue, and I often have to play mixes on my DAW setup then on a system with a sub as my DAW setup doesn't catch unwanted low-end "boominess" very well. Thanks. (BTW - I don't have the Apollo/D-Box setup, but am thinking of going that route...that's why I'm asking.). Any sub model recommendations?
Im a little foggy about using the "monitor Out" of Apollo into the "Analog In " of the D Box. If that is an all analog path, how is "Monitor Out" of Apollo being "mirrored" out of S/PDIF as well? Since there is no AD conversion in D Box, I am assuming that the Apollo is ADing the signal and then sending out via S/PDIF? Seems kind of important to also use the DA of D Box when tracking too, no?
HI!! If I run this setup with a focusrite dynamic octopre, would I use the ADAT in/out to link the pre to the apollo? and does that change the above setup at all? Thanks!!
Hiya! Old comment, I know, but as a Focusrite user I think I can lend a hand. It is unlikely to change anything as far as these connections go. The only difference is now you have an additional 8 ins and outs (assuming you have both connected to the Octopre) on the interface. If you were to use the Octopre, you wouldn't be able to use ADAT I/O to connect to a D-Box, due to the fact that ADAT is an optical medium running a light source through the cable to provide audio. If you were to use the Octopre connections, you would use the same principles and the same cables as described in the video, only connected to the Octopre instead of the Apollo. Exception of course being the S/PDIF cable to the D-Box and the Monitor outs on the Apollo. Hope this helps!
Does this compromise those additional inputs? What if i need all 8 inputs? Id have to connect and disconnect again? This is for mixing purposes isnt it? I hope these questions do not sound stupid, I'm an engineering in training lol
I have question, I pray you answer. say I recorded a full band with a firestudio project all tracks has been recorded, is there a way with apollo that I can use there effects / compressors after it has been recorded already, like a PLUGIN? say, in my pro tools can I go where to insert plugin & will there be an UAD plugins area to choose from? or do I have to solo that track go out of an output then into the apollo then out into my firestudio project to record that UAD effects? I hope we can.
i got a question ... i got everything connected as in the diagram or more specific is exactly the way you say . but i got pro tools 9 and i make the routing , sent everything to the summing outputs ,return the signal to my bus .. got signal and sound but only at the sum or analog buttons . im also sending the bus signal to a stereo channel to print . how do i hear it in the dAW button . i also see that in the video you have the input monitoring icon with the mute , solo and record button . in my pro tools doesn't show . please help me
Okay now my system sounds are handled by the Apollo, but it is really loud, I've set my Apollo to -6db, still the difference between the sound coming out of Protools and RUclips is very different, louder. I can set System sounds and I can also set iTunes to quiter, but like ,RUclips? In System preferences the volume habdle is greyed out :-/ Also, when I switch between Analog and Daw, the 'Analog' is also louder. And last: where do I get an Iphone dock with an xlr connection ?( aes ) :-)
Why do you need to use a D-Box with the Apollo? It is primarily for the summing capability of the D-Box? UAD already has Digital to Audio conversion inbuilt. Is it because the D-Box has 2 inputs so you can AB two mixes? The headphone outputs don't seem to be necessary as the Apollo already has these although the Talk Back Mic would be useful. I'm just trying to understand why I need to add this to my setup. I'm interested in getting the most out of the Apollo.
Brandon Shoop Could you explain this some more ? For example , I have recorded 4 keyboard parts in stereo . I then take the 4 stereo tracks and send it to the outputs of Apollo which get sent to the D box ( which has really nice converters ) it sums it up in the analog world , adds some color to the sounds and then it sends it back to the Apollo inputs as a stereo channel , where I re record the sum of my 4 stereo tracks. And the simple act of basically rerouting these tracks into another analog converter and back makes the stereo signal sound exceptionally better ? Like $4000 or whatever the d box cost ? Comparatively speaking if I simply sent those 4 tracks into a stereo bus ?
What’s so special about this setup is 1. The more efficient referencing, being able to A & B in this way is 💯 times easier 2. NO LATENCY!!! If you own an Apollo, and have used it for tracking etc.. you’ll know that there is always somewhat of a latency problem (delay) 3. My personal favorite, being able to use your vst’s in the analog path!! (The same as using a hardware compressor in your audio path) in other words, using your plugins with massive headroom. Your plugins are essentially super charged with true analog, get it? This setup is truly invaluable, and superior to using just the Apollo lol. Then you can add the d-box controller later down the line?! 😱 this rig is so beautiful 😭
+pureMix What if I have an Apollo 16? I dont think I need a patchbay since I have more I/O, well depending on the amount of outboard gear. How would I connect them two together, the Apollo 16 and the D-Box? Since there's videos showing how to connect the Apollo 8 with the D-Box but there's no videos in youtube so far showing how to connect the Apollo 16 with a D-Box. I seen people using the 16 with the D-Box, I just still figuring out on how to connect them two.
can someone please give me some advice on this i have 3 hardware synths, 1 hardware drum machine, and 1 mic. i want to record these on the fly in audio tracks in my DAW. ive been looking into the Apollo twin duo and i have pretty much got my mind made up and i want to buy one. do i need to connect these synths to a mixer then to the Apollo twin duo? what would be my best options? thank you
So this setup just worth it for someone who use a lot of external instruments and records a lot of sound. This can't worth it for someone who use mainly VST instruments ?
Thank you for the helpful walkthrough. However, you would think that UA could incorporate most of these functions into the console software, no? For example, I am coming from a 10 yr old TC Konnekt 48 where you have a full speaker management system whereby you can set the x-over and slope for your mains and sub from the console, choose between 3 sets of monitors, and save all your custom presets for each. I am very impressed with my new Apollo 8 Quad but I am surprised UA hasn't incorporated this, unless I am missing something. Cheers. en.audiofanzine.com/tests_v3/tc_electronic/sk48/05-routing_2.jpg
You know your shit! I've been using my 2 8ps for over two years now with my computer audio going into virtual chan 17/18 (1/2) and logic sound going into 19/20 (3/4) now....I have nothing!!! no sign of any audio from my computer or logic in console...the audio midi set still has outputs 17/18 assigned...What the freek is going on??? getting desperate here!
mmmh .. Lots of spaghetti ... I have all that in my Control Room in Nuendo or Cubase for free.. All my monitors sellector, Cue mixes, monitor level, Click levels, talk back, external reference input, 5.1 - 8.1, etc..... I rather stay with the APOLLO alone..
I really love watching this guy videos he has some amazing videos I was easy so hooked up or set up he’s the best on RUclips.
thanks for the kind words
this is amazing not because of the features you're talking about but it is because of the simplicity, cuz for having exactly the same result in my studio i used to use a Mixing Console, Patch Bay, A\D Converter, Interface, CD\Tape Rack, lots of wires and cables and finally the beautiful time delay :D

Hands down, the best instructional video ever!
Hey Fab! Have you done an update of how to use UA Apollo running LUNA with D-Box? Just switched over the LUNA and trying to get up the learning curve. Your videos are always VERY helpful!
Fab, that's a fine demonstration, and beautifully edited for clarity.
how do we set up the appollo twin with dbox?

Great video Fab, I have the Apollo Quad and the D-Box and really appreciate the video explaining the setup. Keep em comin'!
Fab you are a bad ass man, your tuts are exceptional
Now that was very informative. Great job on this vid, and all the others for that matter. It's nice to see the breakdown of the connections and why you do it that way!!
Great video man!
Can i ask, is this same setup (the monitoring, not the summing) possible with an apollo and a Dangerous Monitor ST???
Thanks
Dcup

"You need to put it on STUN" LMAO!! Fab never stops. To be clear he was talking about turning the Apollo's volume all the way up.
Can I do this with my Mackie Big Knob ? If not Does the big knob become obsolete with a D box?
I use this video as therapy. merci beaucoup.
Also, what would you use the sum channel for with this set up - wouldn't it just be the same as the DAW channel?
Very helpful explanation !
Fab, great stuff as usual.
@7:32 when talking about analog summing, correct me if I'm wrong, but this seems like a workaround to be able to do unison preamp recording like the new BF Apollos?... Can anyone correct me???
excellent.. how to connect apollo to neve 8816... do you have any idea
What if I had two Apollo Quads daisy chained? Would the setup to the D-Box differ at all?
Thanks alot! Another thing, now that you can stack 2 Apollos, how would you do this setup?
Could you please do a video on how to do this with the Sonic Core Ferrofish A16 MKII?
Great video! Just one question, what cables are you using in this video? As in what brand? Thanks!
what cables are needed to connect iPods or laptops headphones outputs into CD input? would i need a special isolator?
Can I connect a Fireface 800 to the apollo 8 TB to utilize SPL Midream XP's 16 channels? Adat?
OK this is a silver face Apollo and an older version of the dangerous d box. My question is: do you still recommend this setup with the newest versions of both? (Apollo x and redesigned Dbox)
like this set up and im going 4 it but my ? is this if i want to use a avalon 737 2gether with this where do i connect the avalon?

Very well done!
Aside from the summing capabilities, should this work the same with a Presonus Central Station Plus?
Hey Fab, do u think the d-box is a good companion for the upcoming Apollo 16 especially considering that it has headphone outs or is it better suited for the original Apollo?
Okay... focal i have me to the Solo 6 Be but yours what kind of model you have i never se them before.

thank you so much for this video
So you can use 4 sets of headphones?
Hi I Have a question what kind of monitors are behind of you?
If you daisy chain the Apollo with another Apollo, do you also have to daisy chain another D Box for the same set up? Anyone?

this man is "fruit computer"
In realtime? Are you 100% SURE? ;)
probably due to it having a 100% analog input on the dbox.......
you must feel real big and bad explaining NASA history on a hardware setup video for sound engineers!
REAL TIME NO LATENCY
