Thanks for posting Matt. I have a new, sealed LP that the buyer wanted me to ship the LP outside the jacket. Thanks for explaining exactly what the buyer requested! Great video.
I've used the white mailers shown in the video to box up 5-10 records, you can 'score' the cardboard to make it bend in a different place from where it was pre-scored, then put those white boxes inside of a larger Amazon shipping box you already have. You can cut and 'score' the Amazon box to make it fit the boxes you're mailing so it doesn't have a bunch of extra room that may need more filler. You can search for 'scoring' boxes on yt to see different ways it's done. I just use scissors to cut a break into the cardboard where I want it to bend. I've used USPS insured media mail for virtually all shipping I've done.
I've shipped hundreds of records. My method is similar. I take the record and inner sleeve out of the out sleeve. I then put the record in a plastic record sleeve (not an inner sleeve, this is a round corner plastic sleeve that I use to keep the record from contacting anything else in shipment). I then put make a sandwich, outer sleeve + bubble wrap + record (in rounded sleeve) + inner sleeve. All of that goes in a outer plastic sleeve. Bubble wrap on top, bubble wrap on bottom, and then 4 pieces of bubble wrap (6x6) to connect the whole thing together in a nice tight package. Not a complaint yet at all and I get good feedback on packing
Nice video but hoped to see a video on a self made package. These boxes cannot be found here in the Philippines and getting them from amazon or ebay costs me twice as much for shipping fee as the price of the mailing boxes
Yeah, I do this each time I've sold a record or traded, never had complaints, stiffeners are a must! international shipping does suck :\ I don't offer it when I sell, but have sent to friends; one even got lost for 6 months and I did have tracking.
Hi Matt, have you ever tried shipping in a pizza box? Not used box of course :) Medium or Large pizza boxes are 12x12 and 14x14. I'm not a collector and mailed only 2-3 records in pizza boxes and seems no complains. Just went to my favorite local pizza joint and asked for a few new pizza boxes. They have no problem with that. Just wondering if you tried and what's your opinion. Thanks.
What about shipping/moving an entire collection? I’m about to move across the country and have about 350 records that have to make it there safely. What’s the best/safest way to package and move a large quantity of records? Or what’s the safest way to put a bunch of records into big boxes?
No answer here. I'm trying to do the same thing. More than you but in batches of around a hundred at a time. And across the globe. I'm still looking. Did you find anything useful ?
Nice post, and great information.. subscribed! Oh, and I love the Spawn PJ poster in the back. Besides records I also collect gig posters. I need to get mine framed and hung as well, they're gourgeous
You're ultimately going to be held liable for any shipping damage so I'd ask the buyer if they want you to remove the record and leave the shrink wrap on the cover. If they say no, then you can politely tell them that you can't be responsible for any seam splits. While that may technically still be your responsibility in the eyes of Paypal, it may at least lower the chances of them trying to pull a fast one on you.
Hello, I notice that the link you included for cardboard insert pads are for insert pads that are indicated at 12 3/8 x 12 3/8. Is important that the insert pad is slightly larger than 12 x 12?
I used to get frustrated when I first started buying records online because nearly all of them would arrive with split seams. Nowadays I ask all sellers to ship my records outside the jacket in a generic sleeve and keep the original inner sleeve inside the jacket empty (including brand new, sealed records). 95% of them agree to do it, and 100% of all those records have arrived in pristine condition.
Shiped a few records to US and Europe from Russia. Using bubblewrap + cardboards with ducktape Every record goes within 25 working days and mostly ships succesfully The same thing regulary do with tapes rather than vinyl. Everything goes perfect as the buyers saying. Ship usually goes arond 12-15$ depends on weight. Trying to deal with appropriate by rating users at Discogs. Were tricked a few times there just because of not knowing such option... So be careful guys and stay grate buyers )
Hello and thanks for the video! TMR, I have an add-on question. What is the best way to ship 8-10 records to the same single destination? Do you have any tips for this?
Why do I keep getting a little opening in two of the corners with the record mailers? I can never get those mailer corners to close all the way. This is with 1 lp and two cardboard inserts.
I have not done a lot of research but my lp's are ordinary best of/greatest hits type mostly, nothing rare and in pretty good shape...how would I price them? Where could I look for a fair sales price? Thanks..
Literally had a guy from Discogs send me a record with the record itself OUTSIDE the inner sleeve and pressed against the cardboard mailer. Suffice to say, it came scuffed to high hell...
Amazon and many Discogs vendors just don't learn. Amazon sent me an LP with a simple bag. A Bag! Suffice to say it arrived bent on a whole corner. A French shop from discogs' lp arrived so beaten in a flimsy cardboard envelope, and it was warped. Even packaged the warp was noticeable. Some of these boxes are too flimsy, not suitable for overseas or continental country to country shipping. They almost always arrive with seams splits in the inner sleeves, specially with new and sealed records. 😔
I personally think record sleeves should have reinforced inner edges to prevent seam splits. Like a small edge of foam on the insides at the creases. Yes I know that won't happen, it would increase the price of production. I just think it would be dope if they had that.
One thing that I feel you left out - some newbie sellers placed the vinyl outside of the jacket HOWEVER they kept it in the original inner sleeve. So, you guessed it, during shipping it moved back and forth causing splits in all 3 seams, ruining the original inner sleeve! - do an edit and please add that!
Marzy1492 I agree with this 100%. I asked a seller to ship me the white vinyl of Interpol’s El Pintor (very expensive) outside the jacket. And while the jacket came flawless, the record split completely through the inner sleeve.
I hate this so much. I'm one of the few people left who actually prefer to keep records in the original printed inner sleeves they came in, I don't bother with over priced pointless plastic sleeves. It's very annoying when they arrive with 10 cm tears on all sides.
So, you’re saying remove lp from original sleeve, place in generic sleeve, and place all- record in generic sleeve, original sleeve, jacket - into plastic sleeve ?
@@artiegross566 For clarity this is what we do: carefully remove the vinyl from the jacket, leaving the original inner sleeve within the jacket. Any record under $20 get a new generic sleeve, any record over $20 gets a rice-paper (MoFi type) inner-sleeve. Then we sandwich the vinyl and jacket between 2 pieces of cardboard before placing in a mailer specifically designed for vinyl records. Because we toss out a lot of poor quality vinyl that we get I save the jackets and use that instead of the cardboard I mentioned previously.
Excellent! How would you recommend shipping two records plus a t-shirt in a single package? I am thinking I would package the records inside a mailer like this and then put that plus the shirt and enough bubble wrap or other filler to keep it all snug inside a Priority or similar box.
i wish the d-bag that sold me a $300 lp would’ve watched this video before sending it off across the globe instead of using a flimsy piece of cardboard.
Personally. I despise media mail. And had horrid luck with it. As it’s randomly opened and many times damaged since it’s either poorly put back together or handled incorrectly. So I’m priority only. Media mail saving me 5-8bucks on a record that costs over 40usd is not going to happen. Only if it’s 20usd or less will I consider media mail. Collectors albums, 180g,200g or first pressings etc. rare Japanese with obi strips etc. all ship ems for me. And priority Usps If in USA. Imo Italian post is the worth in the world. As I’ve only purchased about a dozen records there but almost all of them mishandled, slow, and super super expensive cost too.
Yes, and Media Mail gets shoved to the back of the bus and sits in limbo sometimes. Sometimes never arrives. I've had to refund eBay buyers on expensive books that were never delivered. Won't use it for anything pricey.

Always sandwich with cardboard larger than the record itself! And first. One going horizontal grain and the other going vertical grain. Then bubble wrap of room! But never bubble wrap first and sandwich after!!! Bad idea. Sad and common mistakes allowing internal flex to the record and fold marks. Bubble wrap always on outside of the sandwich! God forbid using uline mailers like you show in this video. Horrific corner damage almost always! At least where I live 50% Guarantee it will have multiple corners damaged, and about 75% damage to at least one corner. Whiplash mailers, CLP or Pratt are good options. But if you MUSt use those crap uline... double box it. Or add additional corner pieces taped on securely to improve corner integrity. But seriously... get a better mailer. Invest in getting whiplash mailers for larger orders. Especially if they are valuable! Worth every penny!

either your filler pad is too big for the box or you're overstuffing it a little
@@TooManyRecords I measured the filler pads and they are a little over 12.5 inches. About 1/8th of an inch over.

Pretty much the same strategy as this video, just downsize it. They make 7" mailers and appropriate sized inserts too!
Do 7 inch records have to be shipped outside the sleeve? I'm talking about the ones that have cardboard sleeves similar to 12 inch lps.
Ideally because they can still split
