    Hope you like our little traveling video! I know I pronounced Chiemsee wrong many times - but I correct it at the end of the video 😉. Always learning! Anyway, it was one of the only gorgeous and very warm days we’ve had since we’ve moved here! ☀️

      Chiemsee was always very clear to understand. Also some Germans struggle with it and there are basically 2 different pronounciations. "ch" like in "Bach" or "k" . People from Bavaria always use "k".

    You must be a very lucky woman, because Kevin is so great with children. I like it how he shows everything to them. One suggestion for a daytrip would be Europa-Park in Rust in the state Baden-Württemberg, but it is maybe to far away for a shortterm trip. Your children will definitivly love it.

    Next time do the whole tour with visiting the smaller island Frauenchiemsee. I think this will be better for the kids. You can walk around the island and eat smoked fish from the local fishermen and other goodies, famous marzipan and Bavarian island foods.
    And try the Märchen-Erlebnispark in Marquartstein. A fairy tale Park with all the German fairy tales and lots of fun.

    You have a nice artful way of documenting everyday life! Even views out the windows of the car help give a feel for the beautiful Bavarian countryside.
    Your choice of music to complement the scenes is also really nice! If you’re open to another McDonald‘s visit (once in while is not bad), not far from you is a really special one. In Irschenberg, which is west of Chiemsee on the A8 Autobahn on the way to Munich, there‘s a huge rest stop off the Autoahn and among the restaurants is a huge two story McDonalds that looks like an Alpine Chalet from outside. When my friends from Arizona visited, they were pretty impressed by it and they’re not big McDonalds fans.

    Sounds like you had a great day! As for Herrenchiemsee, make sure it’s open for visitors before you go, as you can only get inside if you book a tour. Currently, tours need to be booked ahead of time through their website. There’s also two great mammoth museums very close to where you live that I visited quite a few times as a kid. And there’s the Märchenpark in your nearby towns that I can both really recommend for the kids. Try to be there early or on off days, as they may be full otherwise. But as long as COVID restrictions last, I’d always check online whether you gotta get tickets ahead of time and if they’re open.
    Hope it works out for you soon!

    I do love the Chiemsee and swimming in it! If you hit the right time of the year, the water is crystal-clear. And in some areas it's very flat. So you can walk into the lake for like 100m (!) and still stand on the ground as the waters height is there like about 1m only. And as it is so clear, you can stil see the ground you're walking on. Spend many weekends there camping! It's about 2 hours drive from where I'm located, but it's no problem. Fridays after work I drive to the Chiemsee and return on sunday evening. It's like a 2 day holiday trip :-) If I'll ever see you there, I'ld say "hello!" or "servus!" to you as well! :-) Thanks for sharing your experiences in Germany! Take care and all the best! :-)

    Oh, I love Oberbayern! The military gave me the chance to work near the Starnberger See, and I gladly took it. It was like a year-long vacation, with a forest on one side and the lake on the other of our little village, and from Starnberg town, there is an S-Bahn connection straight into Munich. I used it to visit the Oktoberfest, because the Festbier is delicious, and I don't drink and drive. Talking about beer, you should also visit Kloster Andechs once beer gardens are open again. It's beautifully located on a hill with some steep stairs leading up to it. I still wonder how that bunch of drunken Australians I met there found their way back down.
    When you're in or near Starnberg, it's tempting to follow the road signs to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. I did that and was disappointed. Upper Bavaria is famous for decorated houses with paintings, wood carvings, and so on, but they've overdone it. That's nothing to do with tradition. Maybe they did it to appeal to American and Japanese tourists.
    There are two other things in Bavaria I'd like to recommend to you: First, the city of Passau, near the Austrian border, also called the "three rivers city". You must see the Höllgasse there. It's a narrow street that gets flooded every time the river Danube has high water, but the people just won't leave. To the contrary, many artisans have their shops there, and I bought many useless things from them because they simply looked nice.
    Second, what you must see, is a Freiluftmuseum, or reconstructed village. There are many of them in Bavaria, find out which one is closest to you. The kids can walk around and play while the adults can join a guided tour and learn about rural Bavarian architecture.
    That's all for now. I'll write about Regensburg, my favorite ancient Roman town, another time.

    A tip for after Corona for a great medieval castle: Hohenwerfen in Salzburg. I think your kids will love it. 🙂
    Oh, and just in case you didn't know yet, as in English the term "castle" is usually used for both:
    - A "Burg" is a fortified residence, usually from the medieval period or shortly after. Basically what you think of when you think about a medieval knight's castle.
    - A "Schloss" is an elegant residence, usually built after the medieval period, often with medieval-style aesthetic, but not actually fortified. Like Neuschwanstein or Versailles.

      Okay thanks Thomas!

    • @kevinmcfall5285
      @kevinmcfall5285 3 года назад

      Right! In English we have words fortress, castle, and palace. Are there only two words in German, Burg und Schloss? The main function of a fortress is definitely defense, and palace is more of a large beautiful place where a rich person lives. Castle is kind of a cross between the two: usually fortified and usually a place where someone important lives. I would say Burghausen is a fortress, Neuschwanstein a castle, and Herrenchiemsee a palace.

    • @kevinmcfall5285
      @kevinmcfall5285 3 года назад

      I guess Neuschwanstein is a Schloss since it was only built to impress and never had any defensive purpose.

    • @therealrooster
      @therealrooster 3 года назад +1

      @@kevinmcfall5285 Fortress (Festung), Palace (Palast) and others exist in German too.
      However, in German Herrenchiemsee is a Schloss.
      A Festung (or, in old-style German, Feste) is usually used for purely military fortifications, which were more usual before and after the Middle Ages. Medieval castles (Burg) were usually also the residence of nobility.
      After the Middle Ages, with the decline of the feudal system, the functionality of a Burg basically gradually evolved into separate buildings: the Schloss for residence, the Festung for fortification.
      Of course, sometimes the distinction is not quite so clear: Hohenwerfen for example was built primarily to fortify the Salzach valley (when you see its position, you will know why :-) ), so both terms somehow apply to it.
      The first sentence of the German Wikipediaentry actually starts with "Die Festung Hohenwerfen ist eine mittelalterliche Höhenburg [...]" (The fortress Hohenwerfen is a medieval hill castle [...] ).

    • @therealrooster
      @therealrooster 3 года назад

      @@kevinmcfall5285 I think Burghausen is a castle too, since it was not built purely as a military fortification but as a residence for nobility. Of course, by definition a Burg is also always a fortress too.

      @@MyMerryMessyGermanLife In German it is called Bodensee. Supposedly Germany's largest lake bordering Germany on the North, Switzerland on the South and Austria on the East side. A bit far (app. 3h to drive) for a day trip. In the moment, I'd rather concentrate on closer destinations, like Burghausen (you already plan to visit it, right?), Wasserburg am Inn, Salzburg (when it is more convenient to visit without Covid test etc.), Passau a bit further away, etc. etc. If you prefer seeing lakes there are also Waginger See, Simssee, the lakes near Eggstädt (North of Prien, supposedly created by a meteor crash), lakes East of Salzburg in the "Salzkammergut. Maybe you have heard of en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_White_Horse_Inn on Wolfgangsee. Also there is the Fjord-like Königssee. Just FYI: 10 days from now, you have a traditional Bavarian holiday coming up, which provides fantastic photo opportunities, assuming the weather is fine. It is a traditional church holiday (catholic), and it is celebrated with processions through the town. While the religious tradition exists all over Germany, the splendid spectacle of traditional clothes (Dirndl, Lederhosen, Wams, Trachtenschuhe) worn by both the men and the women, including the young people in the village, is quite a sight all over Bavaria and Austria, even if you just watch it from the sidelines. Maybe the little ones prefer being on the playground, but you definitely don't want to miss seeing that. You may want to ask around, which village around you is known for having a most beautiful one, but in general, you will find them almost everywhere all over the Chiemgau. Usually, they start around mid-morning. You may see signs in town, or you see that certain parts of the road are blocked off for Frohnleichnam.
    And don't worry about not doing everything on your trips. That is why you moved. To explore all this in the years to come and at your own pace. Wonderful video. Thank you

      @My Merry Messy Life The mentioned public holiday is the Feast of Corpus Christi and it is not unique to Bavaria. Although it is not a general pubic holiday in every federal state it is celebrated in every state with a catholic majority... and in other states there're used to be corteges as well. But yes, the most pitoresque ones could be found in Bavaria.
      But I've certain doubts if there will be processions this year due to covid restrictions.

    Making use of the new car! And you're right: you have time, take your adventures one castle at a time ;) Make your "cultural enrichment" first and afterwards you can see if the kids are still up to other stuff.
    Did you taste a difference in the McDonald's food from the US?

      I didn’t taste much of a difference and I thought I would! I was surprised - it tasted about the same. Well, there was less salt.

      Herrenchiemsee is literally a copy of versailles. For example the "mirror ball room" is a little bit longer than the one in versailles but looks nearly the same. Because of the high costs of the building process and other expensive castles like neuschwanenstein, herrenchiemsee has some unfinished parts. Really intersting tour. The castle also has some other secrets but i wont give too many spoilers. Sanssouci is also a great castle to visit.
