- 1982 was interesting year for football; an even more interesting year for those who follow the Denver Broncos. Many of those fans have the same question when discussing the 1982 season. The question is simple: What Happened?
I made a mistake in the video that many are commenting on. John Elway was not drafted by the Broncos, he was drafted by the Colts and refused to play for them. The Broncos traded the Colts OT Chris Hinton, QB Mark Herrmann, and a 1984 first round draft pick in exchange for Elway a week after the draft took place. My apologies on the mistake, a lot of things go on in the process of making these videos, and mistakes will happen. Thanks for watching.

Man. Steve DeBerg was one of the great journeyman QBs. Blast from the past. By the time I was watching the NFL he was an elder. He hung around until 44 I believe.
The Broncos also had a new owner in Edgar Kaiser and Reeves was a huge coaching prospect coming out after Dallas lost to the 49ers in the NFC Championship. Kaiser wanted his own coach.
Beau, your videos keep getting more and more impressive. I have an idea for a video series: how it happened. Basically, magical seasons, like the 1989 steelers, 1972 packers, 1991 falcons, and the 2006 chiefs. Seasons that were one year wonder. Just a suggestion. Love your content

1982 was easily the weirdest season in league history. 9 game season, a 16-team playoff brackett, in a 28 team league, making it so teams with 4-5 records got in. It's also weird how teams like the Browns, who were 5-11 in 1981, made the playoffs, while the 49ers, the defending Super Bowl champions, did not. It's also weird how the patriots, who went 2-14 in 1981, made the playoffs, while the Colts, who also finished 1981 with the same record, finished winless. Wes chandler had over 1,000 yards receiving it in 9 games. And how can we forget, a kicker winning the league mvp. Mark mosely had a fantastic year, but it was nowhere near mvp caliber

Well done. Mark Moseley was a good kicker, but from what I remember, struggled in the playoffs in 82. Crazy that a kicker could be MVP. 82 was crazy.

@beauboone5332 he was on pace to be the first 5,000 yard passer in nfl history if it was a 16 game season. He set the passing yards record 3 years in a row before 1982. He also did it with a terrible defense that constantly had trouble defending. He led the league in multiple passing categories
82 was crazy !! The strike the Niners fall - the snow plow game - Dorsett's 99 yard run - just a lot of fun in a short period of time. Being a Patriots fan it was a very very different time !! I appreciate your post
Yeah, the Broncos didn't draft Elway, they traded for him. However, you make an interesting point. The Broncos had a good roster. If 82 would've been a normal season, they'd have probably finished around 500 which would have moved them back about 10-15 slots in the 1983 draft. Then they wouldn't have had the draft capital to trade for Elway. You could then argue, w/out the strike, the Broncos don't get Elway which completely changes NFL history. Maybe they draft Marino (they showed no signs of valuing him), but I think they'd have stuck w/DeBerg which means no SBs for Denver in the 80s.
The 82 Broncos committed an average of exactly 4 turnovers a game, which if extrapolated over a 16 game season, would have set an NFL record, eclipsing the 1978 SF 49ers and their 63 turnover (btw another team quarterbacked by Steve DeBerg).
Despite their offensive ineptitude, WR Steve Watson still had a decent year. He's one of my favorite 80s receivers, with a solid stretch of seasons from 1981-1986

The 1981 Broncos were perfect at home. If they won at least 3 road games, they'd be the afc west champions, and San Diego can shut the hell up about how 1981 should have been "their year"

@@beauboone5332 no. I just think people rate the 81 chargers too high. The offense was incredible, but the defense was terrible. Denver had a more complete team, in my opinion. Also, chargers fans constantly blame the weather for them losing the afc championship. You lost to a bengals team that beat you 40-17, at San Diego, during the regular season. I just think it's incredibly stupid that nfl network put them at #5, over much better teams

@@Fireyninjadog I agree. Their 79 team was better. They shouldn't have made the playoffs in 81. If Jimmie Giles doesn't bobble that pass (that was intercepted, and it led to the game winning FG) with about 2:00 left of Tampa's week 15 game against SD, they may run out the clock, and the Broncos win the West that night by beating Seattle.

Hell, when the 2 teams met in week 4, Denver exposed San diego as 1 dimensional, beating them 42-24, in a game where Craig Morton threw 4 tds, 1 incompleteion, with a perfect passer rating. Denver was up 35-0 at 1 point, and steve Foley picked dan fouts off 3 times. San Diego beat Denver later that year, but yeah, I still think the broncos were the better overall team, even if their offense wasn't near the same level as the chargers

Ah yes, the 1981 Patriots, the annually underachieving team that finally imploded. As I recall they lost to the 2-14 Colts TWICE that season. I'd watch that video!

@davidhickey1830 they played tougher than the 91 pats, who were 6-10. They were certainly better than the other 2-14 pats team: the 92 squad. I remember November 1, 1992, the day the pats started 0-8, their worst start in team history
@@Fireyninjadog I agree the 1981 Pats were much better than their 2-14 record indicated, which is why we'd like to see a video about that team's season. Just look at the 5 years prior to 1981 (record 50-26, 2 playoff berths and several near-misses) and the 5 years after (record 44-29, 3 playoff berths, never below .500), they obviously had a solid, competitive team for a decade EXCEPT for that 1981 aberration abomination where things fell apart and they got unlucky.
And they were definitely better than the Pats' 1990 team that went 1-15!

At 5:56 49ers played in the NFC. nice vid brings back lots of memoirs. I was 16 and a big Chargers and Buccaneers and Oilers fan. By the way the Oilers went 1-9 and the Colts went 0-8-1. They had the number pick in the next draft a and took Elway who told them "I'm a Yankee".

Fun Fact: The Seahawks were the only team to lose to Houston that year (in Week 2). If they would have won, it would have changed everything. They would have made the playoffs over Cleveland (with a 5-4 record), and the Oilers would have had the #1 pick at 0-9 (and they would have drafted Elway and kept him).

Elway actually wanted to play for a West Coast team.Houston had Ed Biles as Coach and Bud Adams as owner. Almost as bad as Baltimore
@@flyinelvis69 Not necessarily. Watch the 30 for 30 Elway To Marino. Elway didn't want to play for the Colts (his father, Jack, didn't like Frank Kush, the Colt HC), and agent Marvin Demoff made up the excuse that he wanted to play out west.
The 82 oilers weren't a fluke. 1983-1986: 13 wins, 51 losses. At least they got warren Moon in 1984, but his first 3 years were him adjusting from canada to Houston

As I'm sure many others have already committed, John Elway was drafted by the Baltimore Colts. He was traded to Denver in a fairly bad deal as far as what the Colts got in return.
