- Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh takes the presenter’s chair on ‘Saturday Live’
‘Saturday Live’ was a chat show with a difference each week it was presented by a different mystery host.
The presenters came from the world of entertainment, sport, politics and the arts and included Alan Dukes, Rhonda Paisley, Tiede Herrema, Tracy Pigott, Father Michael Cleary, Brendan Shine, Niall Toibin, Bishop Eamon Casey, Pat Ingoldsby, Ulick O’Connor, Henry Kelly, Lord Henry Mountcharles, Shay Healy, Mick Lally, Eamon Dunphy and Pat Kenny. Music on the show was provided by composer Bill Whelan who also introduced the guest host.
On 31 January 1987, it was the turn of television and radio Gaelic games commentator Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh.
You know him as a broadcaster, a commentator of Gaelic games and greyhound racing, but in fact in his time he’s also been a teacher, a part-time trainer of the Kerry All Ireland, he’s been a founder of Coláiste Gaeilge, and believe it or not a greyhound trainer, and the father of eight children.
His first guest is Cork actor Dónall Farmer best known for playing Fr Tim Devereux in RTÉ soap Glenroe.
This episode of ‘Saturday Live’ was broadcast on 5 March 1988.
The presenter is Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh. Развлечения
Because I live in a foreign lands I knew almost nothing about this fine man, I did hear his voice a few times on the radio years ago then my wife told me about the passion of t his man so I checked on the internet and the first thing I came across was Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh speaking about hurling but to me he was speaking in poetry fashion, I immediately know that his man was a poet, a storyteller a historian of the sport of hurling that he dearly loved, To my way of thinking Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh was the Michael O’Hehir of Hurling commentary. Rest in eternal peace
he didnt comment, he proclaimed it like it was hamlet, he made it fine poetry!
What. A. Man.
A complete legend ❤
A true embodiment of what it means to be Irish; without all the silly "RA" carry on.
Thank you ❤
I cannot disagree with you because what you said is true
All Saturday Live programmes should be online (1986-1988) & (1999-2000).
One of his great quotes "Pat Fox has it on his hurl and is motoring well now, but here comes Joe Rabbitte hot on his tail… I’ve seen it all now, a Rabbitte chasing a Fox around Croke Park!"
Thank you for telling me this story, it is brilliant and most likely it was not rehearsed, those rare people who are blessed with great imagination, use of words and wit have the skill to think in the moment in time and say something that was never heard before, the very great Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh and the very great Phil Lynott had something in common, they were both poets and wordsmiths of the finest order
@@jamesbradshaw3389 Another man I had the pleasure of dancing to in the Countdown Club , Mary St, Dublin when he was with Skid Row...Not today not yesterday
👍👍👍
i just found out!
we shall not mourn his loss, but celebrate a life astoundingly well lived. a well and softspoken man and im convinced, a truly great character, no scandals.
That is an excellent way to celebrate a good life, a life of a rare one, some who left tons of great memories behind
