Building The Workshop Shed (part 1 of 3)

  • Part 1 in a short series about building a workshop shed using some salvaged and new materials.
    This video covers the ground works, the salvaged wood, a SketchUp model of the workshop, building a retaining block wall, making the frame, installing the windows, and starting to assemble.
    This was my biggest ever project, and I don’t know if I’ll ever do anything bigger than this (unless I build myself a house some day!)

    For me, the ideas in ruclips.net/user/postUgkxAfqpMLyFn37qcqUl0FAzqkkycQeXqrhP Plans were a starting point for building different sheds . Ryan gives ideas that allow an individual to draw nicest conclusions into the design and building of his or her own shed.

    It's a good looking shed.
    I think I will look for wood similar to what you used.
    However, I would put the tongue in grove boards inside. That would make a beautiful wall.
    I would go with metal outside, for better protection against the weather.
    But, great job.

    Nice build, but overkill on the frame and a mistake on using drywall screws with pressure-treated lumber. The copper-sulfate in the pressure-treated wood will react with the untreated screws and cause them to corrode clean through. So when the ship-lap (very nice touch) starts popping loose, use double dipped galvanized or treated deck screws to re-attach.

    Because you dried the timber out and screwed the shiplap once the cold and wet gets to those boards because you've used screws and not pinned it the boards will split and break. Screws won't move nail/pins do.

    I think you might have got the bracing the wrong way round on your mini tool/bike shed's doors. Think it's supposed to go from the top of the unhinged side to the bottom of the hinged side. Probably so light it doesn't matter but thought I'd mention it in case you got some sagging.

    nice shed mate but first, you shouldn't drill pilot holes for nails as they will pull out in time. second, you didn't need to bolt the walls together, yes it will add extra strength and rigidity but its over kill. and last please invest in a nail gun. I bet it took ages to put your cladding on using a pilot bit and screws. anyway, looks good just a bit overkill in places.

  • @dannymurphy8987
    @dannymurphy8987 8 лет назад

    Great video. Are you certain that retaining wall is OK though? You do need to be really careful when supporting compacted soil that is on a gradient. I saw you backfilled it the other side but the lawn side will be much higher density. Hope it was checked by a builder anyways. Liked your other projects too.

    • @RagnBoneBrown
      @RagnBoneBrown  8 лет назад +1

    • @dannymurphy8987
      @dannymurphy8987 8 лет назад

      OK. It's just I have read you do need to be very careful with walls retaining earth. From the vid it's hard to see how much 'retaining' it will be doing. If you have a heavy snowfall for instance when it melts you will have a large volume of water heading downhill. I saw you used dense blocks but the length is the issue, if you look at garden walls they always have a buttress element every few feet. Also were there foundations? Soil can move very rapidly when on a gradient. Hope I'm wrong anyway.

    Just as a little tip it might have been an idea to lay your blocks on a bed of concrete in your slit trench as opposed to back filling and laying just on the soil it may move when it rains and gets very wet, just an observation pal not a dig at your attempt. How much do recon it has cost you

    Could you tell us about the foundations and how you decided how to do them There seem to be so many options.

    • @RagnBoneBrown
      @RagnBoneBrown  7 лет назад

      +Alistair Dymock I'm no expert but the options that I had were: get a concrete slab laid professionally or lay some paving slabs on some sand and try and get them all level with each other. I couldn't do the first option by myself/inexpensively so I went for the second option. I didn't want to use pressure treated wood as over a lot of time it will rot eventually whereas concrete won't.

    • @AliDymock
      @AliDymock 7 лет назад

      Makes sense. I guess breeze blocks (like in your retaining wall) work the same as paving slabs by raising it off the ground? I think you could have done a concrete slab yourself seeing how handy you are! The third option seems to be concrete strip foundations that go around the outer perimeter and in the centre if it's a large outbuilding. I'm trying to decide between the three. One thing I did note was that you didn't use a damp proof membrane between the paving slabs and the floor joists, any particular reason for this?
      I really love this video, helps to see every step, no wonder it's so popular. Last question, for the timber frame on Sketchup is that a special plugin or what? Thanks Mr Brown!

    • @RagnBoneBrown
      @RagnBoneBrown  7 лет назад

      +Alistair Dymock I did lay some strips of damp proof plastic between the slabs and the joists but not a complete cover over the whole area, and a few people have already indicated that I didn't do it correctly. So far though I've had no issues with it (it's been 2 years) so hope it will be ok and I don't plan on living here forever, (mainly because I want a bigger workshop!) SketchUp is available to download for free for home users and it's pretty easy to get the hang of using it. Not sure what you mean by plug in? The rendering etc is all included in the software. Definitely recommend trying it. Thanks

    • @AliDymock
      @AliDymock 7 лет назад

    Because the floor isn't covered with breathable membrane will moisture rise up and cause a damp issue in the shed and rot it? I want to build a shed around 5m x 3m, my friends say I need to put a concrete base in, not quite sure what to do yet

      It’s been 4 years and I’ve not had any issues with rot

    Your table saw won’t accept a dado stack? I have the same saw and an old wobble blade my dad left when he passed, been thinking of giving it a go.

      No tablesaws in the EU are not set up for dado blades, not allowed here

    Great series of videos...I'm chronicalling my build on my channel. I dont have the same woodworking skills as you seem to have. Do you think screwed and glued butt joints will be strong enough for framing? Thanks

    • @RagnBoneBrown
      @RagnBoneBrown  7 лет назад +1

      +Dad Diaries hi, thanks. I'll check out your channel. Butt joints will be absolutely fine I'm sure, as that's how most framing is done anyway. If I were to build again I'd probably do it differently as my framing is overkill!

      Rag 'n' Bone Brown thanks for the reply. Ok that's good to hear as I'm not sure I could do joinery at this stage! How have you found the whole build having used it? Any chance of a follow up vid?

    Can I ask, why not a simple felt roof? I ask because I'm deciding what to do with my build

    • @RagnBoneBrown
      @RagnBoneBrown  8 лет назад

      +Giulio Lanny at the time I liked the idea of having something more permanent and I didn't want the hassle of re felting (tricky to reach) however in hindsight I think it may have been a better option due to the condensation issues experienced with the metal sheets

      Hey, talk with Woody Hyezmar, or you can at least download his free plans. If you're starting out that's a way to go about it.

    Nice workshop build. So what if some of your methods were overkill, as long as you're happy that's all that matters...

    Drywall screws are cheap, but they will rust out fast in the weather. Bad choice, bud.

    Good job, but man was all this overkill. Entire houses are built with butt joints and nails and here you are half lapping everything and using bolts! But hey, better over done than under done.

      I was thinking the same thing, you could have framed it one afternoon, sided in another afternoon, and roofed on the third afternoon and you'd be done :)
