I first saw "Paprika" six years ago. The artistry of it completely captured me. I've watched it so many times since. It's one of my favorite movies. Seeing it in Imax would be a dream!
glad somebody already said this and it’s the top comment. literally they stole from this shot for shot. i encourage the film threat team to look more into satoshi kons revolutionary work
@@dsnein My ratings about his work are all over the place. Paprika is really the best, imo. Millennium actress is also good, but somewhat more related to Japan in particular.
Satoshi Kon passed too soon. I _highly_ recommend what could be considered his magnum opus; Millennium Actress. IMO, it's still the epitome of how to use the art form in cinematography is a way that may not be possible to replicate with any other medium with an amazing, yet melancholy, story.
Satoshi Kon was one of the best anime directors, Ill never forget the first time I saw Perfect Blue. Such a shame we lost him so young, he was making films no one else was able to.
Kon is a legend in the medium for a reason. See Also: Perfect Blue Paranoia Agent Millennium Actress Memories (Magnetic Rose, which he wrote) And yes Alan, some creative works demand engagement. Crazy, We know. RIP Kon san.
I go back and forth between Paprika and Perfect Blue. Alan, Satoshi Khon has passed away already. Darren Aronovsky and Chris Nolan have cited these both movies as inspirations on many occasions.
Definitely check out Perfect Blue if you like Satoshi Kon. It's genuinely the only piece of animation that actually creeps me out. It's a really well done thriller (and very ahead of its time)
Satoshi Kon is pretty much the epitome of the Visual Director. You might not like or understand his films but you will remember the scenes even without the context.
This is far from the weirdest as a japanophile. I love Paprika since it's the most accessible Satoshi Kon film, in my opinion. It's definitely the most straight forward and linear of his works. Mind Game is a weird Anime, Angel's Egg is another one. Dead Leaves is weirder as well. This is more on par with Paranoia Agent. Edit: also that opening title scene could be my favorite of all time. Edit: I think it's rated R on my BluRay. Also probably should mention the near grape scene where the nudies happens. That might be a bit of a trigger warning. In the Lepidopterist room.
Satoshi Kon. One of my fav anime directors that gone too soon. Worth checking his other works too which were brilliant. Paprika is not my fav among his works but one thing that sticks to my mind is the intro scene.
If you liked "Paprika" you really need to Satoshi Kon's "Perfect Blue" (1997). An incredible psychological thriller. If you can see it in a theater, do it. Otherwise, please see it with the best sound system you can. The sound design is incredible and really drives home the tension. The visuals are incredible. The story is tight and efficient. It keeps you going until the climactic ending that you won't see coming.
Saw this back in college when it camd out and traveled around to indie cinemas. My Japanese roommate was a huge Satoshi Kon fan so he got me and some buddies to go watch it. Amazing film.
Chris you need to see the other Satoshi Kon films. Sadly he only got to do a few, but they’re all great. Millennium Actress is my favorite followed by Perfect Blue.
Allan watches anime "for the plot". We all do Allan! Chris, any movie by Satoshi Kon is a must see. His editing is unique and showcases what animation can truly do. I recommend Perfect Blue, a really influential film (you will recognize a lot of things in western cinema that copies Satoshi Kon). Millennium Actress and Tokyo Godfathers are probably his most accesible films for westerners. For plain weirdness try Paranoia Agent, an anime series. You clearly have not seen really weird anime if you count Spirited Away as strange!
Funny i just ordered the 4k to this movie the day this was posted but i just saw this video now. I am not an anime fan really and I kive in Japan but the abime thst transcends film and art I am all there for. This is one of those movies. I got ghost in the shell recently in 4k my first 4k anime and was disappointed onky with the packaging it was horrendous the 4k box had nore holes than swiss cheese now I understand why you guys in Anerica collect steelbooks. I got this in steelbook tho and the oackaging and movie movie match beautifully!
I first watched Paprika on the recommendation from someone that claimed that it had 'the same plot' as Inception. I can kind of understand what they were getting at, but I think that person is completely zonked out of their head. If you like this movie, I would suggest Perfect Blue, because it's by the same filmmaker and is much more grounded.
If this is the weirdest anime you've ever seen, you haven't seen much anime. Heck, this is probably around the third weirdest work of Satoshi Kon's! (Perfect Blue and Paranoia Agent are both arguably weirder). And Kon is far from the weird side of anime, he's pretty basic.
These are the kinds of thought provoking Anime films that scare Hollywood to death…. Hollywood doesn’t have the talent base or the guts to make movies like this
OH MAN CHRIS, we need to really pop that WEIRD ANIME CHERRY FOR YOU KIDDO. Have I got a list for you, lol... As I said Mind Game, Angel's Egg, Dead Leaves (tamest of the three) for movies that come to mind. If you're new to Kon, you might really like Tokyo Godfathers which is not a weird one, but a christmas story where three homeless people find a baby and try to figure out who the parent is and why it was abandoned. That's more classic Kon. As for weird animes, Oh Edo Rocket, BO BO BO (and that one is made for kids), I know there are more, but I'm going with off the top of my head. Japan has a lot of great weird movies as well, Ranpo Noir, Survive Style 5, Funky Forest, Symbol. Man, pissed I can't remember more weird animes. I think I'm so deep in that well that a lot of the weirder stuff seems normal to me.
You haven't seen much of your think this is the weirdest anime. Not even close. Go to Satoshi Kon's collaborator, the legendary Mamouro Oshii and his film Angel's Egg which turns 40 this year and is finally getting a Western release. Frankly Kon's other work, Paranoia Agent, makes this seem normal. Kon was a great artist and one of the shining lights of modern anime. He worked on Rojun Z and personally did over 100 storyboards for one of the greatest of all anime films,Patlabor 2. All his stuff with Oshii and Otomo was great. Memories is a good example. When he went out on his own with Perfect Blue he was so good. It's sad that we lost him 14 years ago while he was in the middle of his next film. Modern anime is lacking in many ways compared to the golden age, from 81' or so to 97',and his departure from this world was a heavy blow to the art form. Let's just say that Disney and Pixar are nothing compared to what he was.
Not one of Kon's best works. Perfect Blue and Tokyo Godfathers were better. Perfect Blue still has the best "What's real, What's not." Blending since the POV character is losing her mind while playing a character who's losing their mind. Tokyo Godfathers is a good story. EDIT: Perfect Blue is a psychology murder mystery that is slow to start. Tokyo Godfathers is a loose remake of a western with 3 homeless people in Tokyo instead. Trust me, its better than it sounds.
It's cheap on blu-ray atm. Saw it a few years ago, I bought it on dvd in 2011, good not my favourite anime film, I still prefer Cowboy Bebop and Ghost in the Shell more but definitely very well crafted film.Annoying that the 4k steel book released last year isn't available in the UK any more and that appears to be the only 4k release atm.
I'd recommend looking up the Opening Credits since it PERFECTLY distills this movie and gets you ready for what's to come. Also, Satoshi Kon is up there with Toriama and Myazaki. Especially in Japan. I don't personally like most of his stuff. It's very Criticbate you take your own meaning away from this, bs. A Perfect Blue is highly regarded as his best one. It's not the deepest catalogs, I think he only has like 4 or 5 movies out, and hes also dead. Paprika was his last film.
This was the weirdest one? You need to watch a lot more anime. Satoshi Kon was a genius taken from us too soon. You should check the rest of his movies. I'm 100% sure you will love Tokyo Godfather's.
If there's one thing about Paprika that I'll never forget, it's the dream parade and it's music. Absolutely mesmerizing.
Paprika: Inception
Perfect Blue: Requiem of a Dream + The Substance
Satoshi Kon deserves a lot more recognition in Hollywood.
don't forget black swan
I first saw "Paprika" six years ago. The artistry of it completely captured me. I've watched it so many times since. It's one of my favorite movies. Seeing it in Imax would be a dream!
Where Inception got its ideas
Uncle Scrooge did the exact same beat-for-beat story in the 1950s.

My ratings about his work are all over the place. Paprika is really the best, imo. Millennium actress is also good, but somewhat more related to Japan in particular.
Yeah, didn’t he say he was inspired by Kubricks 2001 space odyssey and Satoshi’s paprika.
Surprised you guys never seen or heard of Perfect Blue. Way ahead of its time
Perfect Blue is awesome. So is Paranoia Agent.
@@alexbelfor9451Paranoia Agent is an 11/10 on the mindfsck scale

I'll see your Millennium Actress and raise you Kon's TRUE magnum opus: Paranoia Agent.
@@TheWickedWizardOfOz1PA drags in the middle. Brilliant start, okay finish.
@@dbsommers1 Oof, I couldn't disagree more (the middle is the strongest segment), but alright.
Love Paranoia Agent.
Check out Perfect Blue
Amen.
There was a 4k Steelbook released last year for anybody interested. It’s absolutely gorgeous
Yeah I was just made aware of it and ordered it a few days ago. Funnily enough no steelbook or 4k release here in Japan.
Thank you so much for making me aware of this re-release! I had no idea it was coming out but I'll go tomorrow. I love this movie.
I remember watching Paprika years ago, and really enjoyed it. Tokyo Godfathers is one of my favorite Christmas movies :)
It's a great film. It's also the movie that Christopher Nolan stole from for Inception.
Paprika is a classic, I love this film.
Inception took its ideas from this for sure.
Satoshi Kon was one of the best anime directors, Ill never forget the first time I saw Perfect Blue.
Such a shame we lost him so young, he was making films no one else was able to.
I would recommend perfect blue his psychological horror about identity and reality
It was beautiful. Freaky and thrilling

Perfect Blue. What a way to debut as a director.
Chris, you should watch Perfect Blue by Satoshi Kon. You won't regret it.
I go back and forth between Paprika and Perfect Blue.
Alan, Satoshi Khon has passed away already.
Darren Aronovsky and Chris Nolan have cited these both movies as inspirations on many occasions.
Aronofsky bought the rights to Perfect Blue to use for Pi and Black Swan.

You need to see Millennium Actress chief.
Love this movie! Really wish the creator didn’t die young but I highly recommend his series Paranoia Agent!
Great anime, and one of the few I own. In the same vein as the 90s film "The Cell."
I own The Cell on DVD.
Somebody has to get Chris to a screening of Perfect Blue.
And we'll need a review fresh put of the theater.
Or Tokyo Godfathers for Christmas.
RIP: Satoshi Kon
One of the best movies ever made.
Chris you have to watch, Tokyo Godfathers, Millennium Actress, and Perfect Blue.
It's great!
You haven't seen much anime if you seriously think Paprika is the "weirdest".
Chris, you can't look up the director's work in the future, he died. His other work is well worth checking out, he was a unique artist.
Listening compression is lacking.
Paprika was mind-blowing in a unique way. I rented it without knowing what to expect. The soundtrack is also very different.
Satoshi Kon is pretty much the epitome of the Visual Director. You might not like or understand his films but you will remember the scenes even without the context.

Satoshi kon was a great mangaka as well. He also worked closely with Otomo on a bunch of projects too.
Brilliant, brilliant movie. It's Kon's second best after Perfect Blue. Overfiend was a delightful romp.
Satoshi Kon is a fantastic filmmaker. I'd recommend Perfect Blue if you want to see more of his work.
Satoshi Kon. One of my fav anime directors that gone too soon. Worth checking his other works too which were brilliant. Paprika is not my fav among his works but one thing that sticks to my mind is the intro scene.
One of Kon's canon which I thingk is quality top to bottom. Time with Kon's work is time well spent.
I still have this on PSP UMD, great movie 👍🏻. It'll take a few watches to catch onto what's going on.

As a lover of film, I can assure you that you'll love Millennium Actress by Satoshi Kon.
I've never seen it or heard of it before but the premise sounds almost exactly like Dreamscape with young Dennis Quaid
How did this movie eluded you for 15 years!!! You should watch Perfect Blue now. Also, Satoshi Kon died about 10 years ago.
I loved it when I saw it twice years ago, but my mother had the same sentiment as Chris "Its weird".
If you think Paprika is weird, you need to stay away from Paranoia Agent.
Kon is much missed. RIP.
I recommend Perfect Blue instead of Paprika for non-anime fans. Much better story telling
I have never watched this movie, but I remember finding the UMD for PSP on sale back in the day.
The director sadly passed away of pancreatic cancer many moons ago, this was his final film. I highly recommend Perfect Blue, another of his works.
Good thing Paprika is free in its entirety legally on youtube as of jan 12, 2025.
Paprika is an old (wow... 2006 is old to me now lol) anime movie, the original version is available on amazon.

When i recommend anime to beginners its Akira, spirited away and Paprika.
Damnit. It was on at my local AMC at 4:30pm today and that seems to have been the last showing ever.
Inception by Nolan is based on this story. Satoshi Kon is a master and you should watch Perfect Blue by S. Kon ...
The director Satoshi Kon was an incredible creator, may he rest in peace. Also I wouldn't exactly call this movie "weird," its more unique
Satoshi Kon- a talent lost too soon.
Chris Gore is right. This anime is at the forefront of gonzo Japanese avant garde. Up there with Akira and Tetsuo the Iron Man.
This will upset Matt Walsh of the DailyWire no end.

Hollywood totally didn’t borrow from Kon’s films…cough Inception cough black swan cough.

Quick, show Chris JoJo. He needs to expand his understanding of weird anime.
Paprika is great, but if that's the weirdest anime you've ever seen...brother, I can show you some things...
Weird, for sure .. But weirdest? Hmm...
Inception is a poor mans paprika
This channel needs to show anime more love, but then again that makes gatekeeping that much harder.
Satoshi Kon is superior to Miyazaki for me, personally. (Not a Ghibli fan at all - not my taste.)
Weirdest anime you've ever seen? That's that's hilarious
Watch Urotsukudoji 😂
This counts as h3nta1, which is of course also anime in a way, but it's very special category and normally not meant when people talk about anime.
