  • I Love Melvin (1953) #WarnerArchive #WarnerBros #ILoveMelvin
Charming and witty musical reunites Singin’ in the Rain’s Debbie Reynolds and Donald O’Connor in the tale of a go-fer’s quixotic quest to get his lady love plastered on the cover of Look magazine. Melvin Hoover (O’Connor) is a bumbler (except when he’s dancing on skates), a workaday schlep for Look magazine in love with Broadway chorine Judy LeRoy (Reynolds). Melvin convinces Judy he can send her star aloft by putting her on the cover of Look, due to his photog credentials.
    Directed By Don Weis
Starring Donald O'Connor, Debbie Reynolds, Una Merkel

That definitely qualifies as one of the more peculiar Hollywood dance numbers I’ve seen - Debbie Reynolds as a human football among dancing football players...?

    • @onemercilessming1342

ellyjett--In 1953, television was making huge inroads into the market share previously "owned" by the Hollywood studios. My mother spoke of, during the Depression, spending 5 cents on a Saturday to go to the movies to see a serial, a cartoon, a newsreel and a feature film, sometimes a double feature. Compare that with the prices of seeing a movie in theaters today! Movies during the Depression decade were designed to take people's minds off the bread lines and the unemployment and the hard times. When WW II overtook the nation, the movies were literally propaganda driven and so were the cartoons that were featured. If you can find a Warner Brothers cartoon DVD from that time period (most have been archived as they were, by the standards of the 21st century, very racist). At any rate, by 1950, television sets began appearing in living rooms and the studios began putting out epics such as Ben Hur, The Ten Commandments, and others as well as movies with thin plots but plenty of dance routines and singing to try to fill the theater seats.

Inspired by Judy LeRoy and her human football performance at a Broadway theater from I Love Melvin, and suburban United States of America from Disney's Bolt, I've decided to create a 2024 American slapstick comedy tv show called "Disney's The Secret World of Rusty Rugby". Its plot tells a story about a titular kindhearted, energetic, bubbly, goofy, and funny brown haired American teenage girl with a double chin named Rusty Rugby who happens to work at a Broadway theater in suburban United States of America as a most-famous actress, singer and dancer, portrays the role of a human football at which she dons a brown football costume and a pair of ballets, maintains an egg shape and enjoys being a gymnast. She spends her time being dwarfed by all the dancing football players who treats her like an inanimate object, kicks her like a Rugby football and throws her throughout the quarters. She also had a habit of keeping her smile full of her set of beautiful white teeth closed wherever she acts as a human football.

Ellie let herself be thrown around but never used a stunt double.

@@michelinelalonde2217 She was a hard worker. I had the chance to meet Chuck Walters the director of Unsinkable Molly Brown many years ago in LA and he said that she was not his first choice for the role but her work ethic won him over and she was great in the role.

This was great. Debbie was a great entertainer. They don't make them like this anymore. I glad it's on film. Thank for the upload. Out.

I love Debbie too pieces, but this is really representative of how women were viewed as objects, especially back in this era.
    Incredible dance number, horrible meaning.

Oh, please. I am a woman, this was very cute. She is just playing a football. It does not mean she is viewed as an object outside of that content. If two men dress up in a horse costume, does that mean they are viewed as horses in real life? Stop analyzing, and just enjoy. Nobody bossed Debbie around. She was a tough person.

@kit Don't be so smug. I was alive in the 1950s and I don't see any significant difference from today in this respect. Women disrespecting themselves more now perhaps. Current generation & time are not perfect either.

It's a show within the film and in the film it's not something the character is stoked on. It's a comment on shitty, thankless theatre jobs. A joke. If you want to interpret meaning, you should probably watch the context.

Her head comes perilously close to ground contact a couple of times. WH&S would have numerous complains today.
