The score by Basil Poledouris is an absolute masterpiece and the epic visuals make it worthy of being viewed without dialogue and still be as compelling and captivating as ever. The only downside is you lose those epic speeches spoken by James Earl Jones, Max Von Sydow, and even Arnie's prayer to Crom by the end
Best soundtrack ever made.
Mako has one of the best narrator voice in this movie as well
His Robocop score is up there too
Really, that's what makes the original Conan so unique in its genre, even today. It's downright operatic, with loooong stretches that have no real spoken dialogue. Everything is conveyed by the visuals and music. That sort of low-dialogue film storytelling is surprisingly rare.

Thank you for fighting for physical media. Those of us who care will eventually be gone, but as long as we can make one person understand how important it is to own what you buy, the struggle is worthwhile.
People think I’m crazy for still owning and still buying physical media. You just can’t beat getting a film you love in a deluxe set and spending a few evenings taking a deep dive into it. Sadly most people have moved on though and see no reason to go back. I don’t think it will ever go completely away though, I think it will stick around as a luxury niche product and become ridiculously expensive the same way vinyl has.
Nothing beats being able to enjoy a movie or whatever without a company saying no

Also artists making unannounced changes to their films, which is absolutely rampant.

Arrow is currently my favorite 3rd party label for physical media releases. The sturdy cardboard boxes, the lavish artwork, expansive extras, and picture quality that's even ahead of Criterion's efforts makes me want to buy more of their releases whether I love the movie or not.
So true, robocop and The Running man look absolutely phenominal.
Sony are the only major studio home video division I can think of who really love to include as much archival content in their releases, especially on the UHD format: we finally got extras for Hook, Labyrinth recently got thirty mins of workprint deleted scenes and the original screen tests of actresses auditioning for the role of Sarah, Starman is getting the entire TV series spin-off restored in HD as a bonus, and most notably the archival content on the recent Ghostbusters releases are absolutely impressive. Other studios need to take note.
I was too young to see the first movie when it came out but the whole family went to the second one. Mum was a big fan.
Fun fact; when they're sailing the boat across the lake to reach the wizards palace, if you look closely you can see Conan repeatedly bumping Malik on the head with the oar.
Amazing property. Still popular. It's amazing no ones doing anything with it for the screen.
They did do something with it, there was that utter boring remake in the early 2000's... along with Clash of the Titans, Total Recall, Robocop, Ghostbusters... ugh.

Always got a Conan vibe from that movie in the best possible way.
I mean, I guess he succeeded (need to see Andrei to know, though)
I was fortunate to have seen a vintage 35mm print of this film yesterday at a local movie theater. Colors were intact and with minimal print wear. From these video clips, the 4K version looks very similar with what I saw yesterday. Can’t wait to get the 4K version soon.
Historically there have been no special features released for Conan the Destroyer, but I would like to pass on something from the era. The week the movie was due to come out, my local news channel had a feature where they showed two men in a room, yelling at a tv screen.
They were post-production for Conan the Destroyer. They were providing the yells for the opening fight with the men of Queen Taramis. As Conan would slice at someone, a guy would bellow his death scream. Then his partner would handle the other one. It was exciting stuff and it aired as a local news segment, never to be repeated elsewhere again. It's a reminder that what is preserved on youtube is only a fraction of the materials that were released when these movies came out. Lost forever, except to memory.

One of the greatest 80s movies of all time
Great review. Mine on order. I have a US PS3 but I wonder if the old stop the film then press top menu trick works on the Bluray to get around the locking. It does on Arrow’s US release of Legend on my Panasonic DP-UB820 region B machine.
Just point out that you don’t need a multi-region player for the blu-ray if you have a Panasonic player. Insert the disc, when the region warning appears, press Stop and wait until the players pause screen appears. Then press Top Menu on the remote and you will bypass the region check. This works on virtually all Pana players, 4K or regular Blu-ray. The same trick works with most (but not all) region A discs.
I got the individual releases over the chronicles set. Standard blu ray, as I have yet to upgrade to 4K. Picture quality looks very good in 1080p, as it was sourced from the 4K restoration. A ton of extras on the first film that I’m still going through. Packaging is out of this world. Arrow Video is awesome.🕺😎

Sounds like he took the same approach that he later did with his Total Recall commentary.
Yeah, I remember hearing a few Arnold commentaries back in the DVD days, and it always sounded like he wasn't quite clear on the boundary between character and actor. A lot of "And here, I kick this guy's ass!" sorta stuff.
I just received the Conan Chronicles from Amazon and there is no menu on the Conan The Barbarian disc so I was unable to watch the movie. It's present on the Conan The Barbarian extras disc and on Conan The Destroyer. I've bought a lot of DVD's, Blu-Ray's and 4k UHD discs over the years and I've never seen a disc missing a menu. Somebody seriously dropped the ball.
Mine has the menu, try wiping off the disc and see what happens. I heard someone else on a blu ray forum had this problem as well, they wiped the disc, and it worked fine after that.
I bought both single releases and chronicles. 😁😁

I thoroughly enjoyed that film (it's commonly quoted in my household) and I'd enjoy hearing Mr. Harper's take on it.
That might be tricky, considering one entire subplot would require extensive censoring to keep the video's monetization. And it might get demonetized anyway. Especially when there's just no way to talk about F+B without discussing *that* scene and its effect on the story.
I love Conan The Barbarian, and I'm not ashamed to say that Destroyer is a guilty pleasure. Prior to the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the Conan movies were easily the best sword and sorcery fantasy epics. The fact that so many 80's movie studios tried to copy the formula shows how much impact they had.
It's sad that physical media is becoming an obsolete concept, as owning a movie is like owning a classic music album. It's an art form that deserves far more than a relatively low quality experience. I've been slowly building up a solid Blu Ray collection, and I love that the movie is available to me forever rather than intermittently on a streaming service.
Physical media matters! If a show or movie is released to streaming only, I'll never see it. If everything goes to streaming at some point, I'll just keep watching my DVDs and Blu-Rays until they disintegrate.

We are so lucky that Disney don't own the worldwide rights to Conan. Looking forward to digging into my set ive only ever owned "The Destroyer" on VHS. I had the old FOX BD of "The Barbarian"
though, the one where if you changed your BD layer settings to French it would play the non BBFC version with the horse falls intact.

I own the DVD and have digital copies of both these movies (and have the theatrical version of "Conan The Barbarian" taped off of cable), but you just sold me on this 4K box set, it looks great!!!

It's unfortunate that we never got the trilogy that John Milius intended. It would have followed Conan from barbarian to king. I didn't see the film when it was initially released. I'm not a great fan of the sword and sorcery genre, but I caught it when it began to play on one of the cable movie channels and I liked it a lot. Schwarzenegger is an actor of limited talents but he was surprisingly good as Conan. It would have been interesting to see how he would have handled more dramatic scenes as the character developed. I saw the sequel once and made no impression on me. Grace Jones was good.

I agree with you that this is a great 4k set. I managed to get it half off at Barnes and Noble the day it came out. Watching the movies back to back, Barbarian is clearly superior. The gravitas of James Earl Jones is sorely missing in Destroyer. One thing I must say, though, is that at 7:40 you mentioned that Destroyer grossed more money, when I believe the opposite is true. I could not find international numbers for Destroyer, but in the U.S. Barbarian definitely made more.
Yes I love what Arrow has been doing lately. Bought this box not long after official release, it exceeded my expectations (and the actual box itself is gorgeous.)
For what it's worth, I bought the bluray set. I know I'm in the minority, but much of the time I am not a fan of 4K. Bluray just looks and feels more like film to me. At a certain point the ultra-sharpness just turns me off.
Excellent Arrow box regardless. In the last few months, besides "Conan", I've bought their boxes of "Wolf of Wall Street", "The Warriors", "Witness", and "Carlito's Way" . They're doing excellent work.

Got the Limited Edition of the first movie yesterday. Stellar release by Arrow. To hell with the region lock, though. Can‘t watch the special features. Still glad I got this. The 4K disc delivers. And the score is magnificent!

Are the standard Conan The Barbarian blurays the same quality as the Arrow blurays? Or is the Arrow bluray better? I'm not referring to the 4K bluray, just the bluray.

I wanted too buy the 4k ultra Conan Chronicles but is Conan the destroyer the uncut version because the UK version was cut and lot of scenes were missing. Even the scene in beginning were Arnie punches the horse.
It’s uncut. It’s an American only release so you have to import it. The 4K format region free also.
Oliver I asked over a decade ago but are you ever going to do a JCVD movie review that stars Van Damme from 2008 because you mention that film in a lot of your other Van Damme films reviews
Unfortunate they went with a weird and warm redish hue on this release. I can't help but notice it in every scene.

I remember when this was released. The commercials played a lot. Animal rights groups protested cause of the depiction of a horse getting it's legs chopped off in the final battle.
Yeah Paramount really neglects their back catalog. Their "Paramount Presents" bluray imprint is a lackluster attempt _to emulate_ the work of companies like Arrow or Criterion, but outside of its artwork (which _with some releases_ is quite nice), it falls short. I own none of them (although I do want "Ragtime"...)
It's the Golden Age studio I probably know the least about, partly because of this neglect.
Yeah bit annoyed the extras blu ray is region locked. Especially considering the price of the set haha.

My only issue with this package is how incredibly weak Conan The Destroyer seems watching it back to back with the first film. They really sold the franchise short.
They went to the appeal to the children route. Certainly not the same feel of the first. But I will give the ending battle some props. It was a bit brutal and more reminiscent of the original.
Yeah, the first one is a masterpiece, the second one can't compare. I can't remember the last time I saw it. Too much of a genre change.
Watch the 2011 remake and then Destroyer won't look as bad!
The film should be slightly ridiculous, many fantasy films of the time are , but they somehow pulled it off, and it ended up being a masterpiece, I think it helps it takes its self seriously, there's no tongue in cheek humor

Watch the movie again with subtitles. The subtitles clearly show that he's saying lamentation - not elimination.

@@user-rt9zq8rs9k you need a clue. He says in the movie after being asked what's best in life - "To crush your enemies, see them driven before you and to hear the lamentation of their women." Now - if you had a brain - you'd look up the word lamentation. Lamentation is and I quote - "the passionate expression of grief or sorrow; weeping". And since he clearly says "to hear the lamentation of their women" - it means to listen to their weeping, cries of sorrow after all the men have been killed. So, next time you speak, make sure to do your research, before writing down something so stupid as to blame Arnold's accent
Red Sonja ought to be included. It's certainly Arnold's third Conan movie.
Sonja had her 50th last year I'm surprised they didn't launch it then, but I think when the new movie comes out this year they might. Though maybe not from Arrow. There is was a 4K European release a few years back from Studio Canal.
