USC did the same thing. Coaches think they are outsmarting teams by not using Juju or Paige for instance to be the first option in the offense and it’s not smart.
As a UConn fan, I watch all of Geno's press availabilities and my takeaway is that I really think that his unstated plan for this year is to punt on the regular season schedule and to focus entirely on winning the tournament. Against both unranked and ranked teams this year his M.O. is going out guns blazing in the first quarter building up huge leads by putting the ball in Paige’s hands and then trying out really strange lineups and sets in the future quarters. So far this season UConn has had multiple 3rd Quarter near-collapses because Geno’s throwing stuff against the wall no matter who they’re playing. So I don’t think Geno thinks his players are something they’re not or that his scheme is too rigid, I think he’s decided to exhaust all his options before the tournament by forcing his players to do to strange things and see if they can handle it. That’s why he says it’s mentally easier as a coach when you are constrained by injuries. Last year with a short roster Geno had to play to Paige and Aaliyah Edwards’ strengths, now he’s spending so much time exploring what his options are. So while I agree with you that UConn didn’t lose because Fudd wasn’t playing, I think with her out of the lineup Geno tried a new strategy with the starters in the first half which clearly didn’t work and won't be their plan forever. But... I really hope I’m right and this isn’t just cope.
Geno has a lot more players to work with this year. He's hoping some players will step up. Shade and KK played great last year. Yet this year in a reserve role both have not responded as well. Imagine the issues when some of the 3-4 remaining injured upper classmen come back. It will create more jumbling around to figure out the best 7-10 rotation. It's a good problem to have.
@briankeefe476 There is no such thing as an effective 10-player rotation. Even 8 is a stretch. It's okay for blowouts. 7 effective interchangeable players is enough. Getting Azzi back will help UCONN. Getting Westbeld back will help ND even more.
@@Kenjayfan55 Yet Geno does indeed have 10-12 players this year capable of playing in the very near future who could literally give him a quality "platoon" rotation if desired. He's done it before at times. 3 seasoned players currently on the injured list....Fudd, Griffen, DuCharme. Getting those players back will certainly help UConn a lot more than ND getting back 1 player, unless their name is A'Ja, Napheesa, or Caitlin. 7 "effective" players is rarely enough to withstand the rigors of March-April Tournament play unless 2-3 of them are WNBA ready....like UConn had last year with 2 such players + Paige. This season there's only Paige so far, the others are not far enough along, including physical conditioning issues..
@@konga1653 I don't know if he was "experimenting" this game. He has shown he will teach "lessons" to his players from time to time even if it means possibly losing the game. It doesn't appear the team has figured out a clear identity and top 5-7 lineup. By March he will have.
You are 100% correct. In games against top teams, Paige has to be involved in every offensive half court set. Having her off ball is like taking Caitlin Clark off point.
@@Retromantic100 Maybe so, but Geno isn’t above criticism. There are many observers of the women’s game scratching their heads regarding how Paige is being used. Since last year’s Final Four loss to Iowa, the blueprint on how to take Paige out from beating you was printed by how Gabby Marshall stuck to PB, almost like a box-in-one. HC essentially took Paige out of UConn’s offense by employing a similar strategy. Louisville followed suit, & ND had a player who could effectively guard Paige like Gabby Marshall did. The obvious counter to these defensive schemes is to put the ball in Paige’s hands. She’s much better offensively from the top of the key, and it allows her to unfurl her deadly 15-ft jumper, or creatively find another teammate or get them the ball in a position to score. It’s hard for a defender to cover her in space, and if they try to double team, she’ll pass to the open man in an advantageous 4 on 3 set.
Geno’s been running the same chin series offense for forever. Stewie, Maya, Tina, etc. all thrived in it and it’s won Geno the most nattys of any coach. However, I do agree Paige definitely needs to be more involved in the on-ball actions. I think Geno has this vision of Paige being this off-ball, catch and shoot savant who curls off screens like Maya was, but that’s not who Paige is. Paige is the type of player who needs the ball in her hands. Paige does need to do a better job of demanding the ball though, she’s too complacent. I think the two main issues right now are 1) as you pointed out, Ice is simply not a good playmaker and trying to run a lot of his offense through his 5 like he used to do with Stef Dolson, Morgan Tuck, Gabby Williams, ONO, etc. is not gonna work with Ice. 2) without Azzi there’s no true floor spacer to open up the court and it makes life harder on everyone. lastly, I think you’re taking Geno’s post game comments too much at face value. you have to take everything he sees with a grain of salt, he just likes to ramble. in regards to the quote about Notre Dame’s limited roster availability I think he was just trying to make a joke of how it would’ve been nice if they didn’t have to go up against Hannah basically the entire 40 minutes. he wasn’t making an excuse. Geno knows more than anyone what it means to coach with a limited roster, he made the final four last season with basically a 6 player rotation.
I agree with this comment. Geno like Paige is criticized for every little thing but no other coach has won 11 natty or 1221 games in basketball history and may not be another. So all of the Geno haters can go kick rocks.
Yeah, it's wild how infrequently Paige had the ball. It's not just her needing to be more selfish, although there's that. It's that, fundamentally, you can create better looks for your teammates if team's are forced to commit, and overcommit, to you on ball. Being a great cutter and waiting until you get a perfect look improves your efficiency. It's not the best way to maximize your team's offensive potential when you're IT. For that, you need to be the primary actor, drawing everyone into your orbit.
If UConn loses and Paige takes 20+ shots, it's "she's too aggressive". If they lose and she takes 17 shots it's "she's too passive" He wants KK, Kaitlyn, Ashlynn and Ice to be players they're not and then blames Paige when she can't save his schemes against top 5 teams. Everyone is calling her "passive Paige" but if you compare her to other UConn stars and the load she actually has to carry it's not even close. And he's put so much pressure on her to win, but hasn't put her in the best position to succeed.
@@natureredux1957 And that UConn team had half the players out with injuries, basically a 7 man team. No one expected them to make the sweet sixteen.....they made it to the Final Four getting past favored USC. And only losing to Iowa/CC by a couple of points.
@@natureredux1957 if you go back and look at that play ask yourself Muhl had the ball to begin with. That call never gets made if Paige started with the ball in her hands. This season the same thing is happening. Lesser guards are bringing the ball up and initiating the offense. In Paige’s freshman year that was never a thing
He wasn't saying Paige shouldn't carry the team, he was saying she shouldn't have had to. Against a weak defense like ND's, everyone should have been contributing, yet as a team they attempted only 64 shots, whereas ND managed 60 shots against UConn's much better defense. The entire team should have been feasting against ND's defense, but they weren't, and that's baffling. If ND doesn't want to risk sending them to the line, they should have been making them pay from the floor.
So UConn has "a Geno Auriemma problem" just because they lost their first game this season? The mark of a great coach is how he corrects the problems that emerge in bad games, and you're selling Geno short if you think the winningest coach in history, both in terms of total numbers and percentage, is not able to make the necessary corrections. It's a long season, and I don't recall you suggesting that Niele Ivey is a bad coach just because her team lost a couple of games down in the Caribbean, including one to a team that, on paper, didn't even deserve to be on the court with them.
THERE IS NO CONNECTIVITY OF A TEAM AND IF ONE PLAYER TEAM EXPECTED TO WIN THE OTHERS BECOME DISCONNECTED --- CHEN WAS THE ONLY ONE PLAYING - GENO WANTS P D TO DO IT ALL AND THAT BS HAS TURNED THE TEAM INTO DYSFUNCTION--- LAST YEAR I OPINED ASH SHOULD GET OUT OF U CONN AS SHE IS JUST ANOTHER THROW AWAY PLYER IF PD DOESN'T SCORE 80 POINTS A GAME WHICH IS FCKNG INSANE - ASH HANGS IN THE CORNER ASH SHOULD BE WING GUARD SARA IN CORNER AND ACTIVE ALONG BASE-LINE AND INTO LANE FOR OPEN PASSES AND SHOTS - TEAM PLAY AND GENO ACTUALLY COACHING IS NEEDED WHAT YOU DID 15 YEARS AGO DON; 'T MEAN SHIT IN 2024 MAYBE SARA SHOULD PLAY HIGH POST THERE IS ZERO TEAM APPROACH !!!
What did happen down on Grand Cayman? The whole team just stunk for two days? I'm thinking something with food or lodging. No way they lose to Utah the next ten times they play them. TCU has some good players and maybe gets them a couple times. Just weird they lost both those.
@@sagittated My point exactly. With the parity we now have in women's college basketball, the days of schools being able to rattle off 100-plus games winning streaks would seem to be a thing of the past. The fact that Notre Dame played a couple of stinkeroos, just like UConn did on Saturday, will have to be measured against performance over a longer period of time. Even the best baseball teams lose 50 or 60 games in a season, and a 300-average hitter might make the Hall of Fame, but he still failed to get a hit well over half the time. Right now the target is on UCLA, which hasn't lost yet, but let's see if they can get through the entire season unscathed. Meanwhile, let's enjoy the competition. There are great players all over the NCAA, and they should command much more of our attention than just the rooting interest we have in our own favorite teams. Pro and college, we are in the golden era of women's basketball.
UConn fans are confused as well Hunter. It’s like everyone outside the coaching staff knows how to run the team better than them. It seems like he’s stubborn and stuck in his ways. Can you do a video on UConn’s terrible perimeter defense next? You can refer to this game and the Oregon state game. They’re shooting 21% this season but shot 47% vs UConn
The only person really confuse is you. UCONN was one play away from the NCAA finals but here you are talking about his coaching. In fact, you are beyond confused.
Hunter, let's be fair, Paige got the team close in the 3rd Quarter. Then, in the 4th Quarter there was a stretch where ND hit 7 straight shots to ice the game away. But, you are 100% right on in your comments. One thing is becoming glaringly obvious, when Paige has someone in her face in 3 point land she is reluctant to take a shot and if she does her shooting percentage is awful. The high post screener must give Paige an opportunity to get open. So much more to go over but let me bring up a topic which has been bothering me for a long time. UCONN's defense is great. Their switching man to man defense is, in a word, sensational. But I am so tired of watching the opposition hoist up 3 pointers with no one guarding them. Why? Because teams have been scouting them and they plant shooters in each corner and pass it out to someone near the top of the key. Immediately, someone from UCONN releases the closest shooter in the corner to put pressure on the player with the ball. THAT'S DONE INTENTIONALLY. Immediately, the next pass is directly to the WIDE OPEN shooter in the corner. EVERY TEAM HAS EMPLOYED THAT STRATEGY. Hunter, if you get the chance, run through the game again and see it you see the same thing. Last thing, can you imagine Sarah and Paige working on the same side of the court? Pick and rolls. Wide open Three's. The opposition will need at lease 3 players to try to stop them. And, can you imagine Azzi waiting somewhere in the wings for an outlet pass from Paige or Sarah? They will be impossible to defend. Geno needs to show the other coach his 'revolving' offense and make the coach feel like he has a handle on what to do. And then, like you said, Geno needs to key on his great players. With Paige and Sarah getting a lot of attention, and with Azzi causing a load of trouble for the defense, whose guarding the other two Huskies on the floor? PROBABLY NO ONE!!!!! It's just that they will get fewer touches. Thanks, Hunter.
Good video. Geno always talks about how he wants Paige to be aggressive but it seems like he loves passive Paige. I’m not understanding what’s going on here
It’s not Genos fault Ice and Jana combined for 5 rebounds and their starting sg Ashlynn shade scored 0 points in 21 minutes the players lost the game simple
Yes, (good commentary) Ice on top with Sarah underneath, not when Sarah can shoot the 3 and cut/drive to the basket. Ice missed so many passes. Louisville had a good defense -- Ice and Sarah were positioned correctly. Why stay the whole game with a new idea (put the 5 on top) that wasn't working. Sorry for Ice being put in an unfamiliar position, handling the ball on top, but also not being underneath to shoot and rebound.
Another thing I don’t get is how KK and chen left Olivia and Hannah wide open from 3 multiple times, yet geno just left them? like why was there never a thought to put Paige on Hannah…I also don’t like that he’s blaming Paige, when this loss is mostly on him and his poor lineup choices (why did Q get minutes in this game????) I don’t think uconn is screwed I just think they got a lot of things to figure out because what they’re doing right now is not working.
Q got minutes cause the game was over she was not a factor Chen and kk was the only other guards that showed up to play not named Paige Ash was a ghost and didn’t deserve to be on the court
UConn is missing key people. Shade would not be starting if Fudd doesn't get hurt the game before. Shade missed every shot she took. This year is the same as the last 3, they are relegated to non ideal line ups and hoping to have everyone ready for a run in March. UConn literally had 2 people you need to guard vs ND, Bueckers and Strong. If Fudd and Griffin are health by March you have a different team. Fudd when healthy gives you a great outside shooter. Griffin gives you a driver, slasher, rebounder and length/quickness on defense. This is a rehash of previous years. Geno actually had championship level rosters the 3 previous years and always had 2 or 3 of the core/starters out come March, Hopefully thay won't be the case this year. Juhasz's extra year probably was the most disappointing with the pre season roster vs what was available. That team had a roster of Juhasz, Edwards, Fudd, Bueckers, Senechal as starters, with subs of Griffin, Ducharme, Muhl. That's a championship level core 8 rotation that was ravaged by injuries.
Saying they may have a Geno problem might be overboard. But many coaches hold steadfastly to their schemes rather than coaching the game in front of them. That's what Geno did. He didnt expect ND to be as aggressive defensively & he didnt expect them to hit 3's. His offensive & defensive plans didnt work & he was slow to adjust
Excellent analysis I believe, Hunter. I have followed Paige since she was in high school and she is w/o question a generational player...a player of her talent needs to handle the ball at least 60% of the time. If she does things will happen. As for Ice Brady: don't get me started on her inconsistency and ineptness as both a shooter & a passer.
It reminds me of the constant critique against Kerr who didn't play the Steph/Dray p'n'r as much as he should have. Idk, it looks like a good problem to have all things considered. But, yes, Ice as a high post playmaker just flat out doesn't work. Put Sarah in that position using a small lineup with her at the 5 (they were losing the rebounding battle anyway) and it can easily become an offensive juggernaut. Mix it up with Paige handling the ball and using on ball screens. Brady unfortunately doesn't have it, she tends to go into tunnel vision when she gets the ball. Paige was really aggressive yesterday though. Aside from that pass to Sarah you rightfully singled out, she always looked to attack the rim and shot. And I believe she was pretty good at it too, of course when the 3s don't fall and you don't get calls at the rim your efficiency tends to decrease a bit, but she kept the Huskies afloat. Which brings me to the defensive side of the action: I understand UConn doesn't have a wing defender like Sonia - almost noone does. But she took her assignment and never left Paige alone, trying to deny the entry pass and smothering her as much as humanly possible. Now, you know Hannah always sees red against UConn. Why would the player guarding her leave her alone in the corner to tag a roller? Especially when she shoots as well as she has? Just let the other players do their thing, the most important thing is stopping her from getting her rythm.
A geno problem is hilarious, Hidalgo has a massive game and all of a sudden geno can’t coach, down by one with a few seconds left in the 3rd. I enjoy your content, this one was a bit overstated
Nahhh. It has always been a problem that Geno won't let paige run offense and we keep saying she needs to (look at her freshmen yr) but no one sees it as a problem because we still win games
@@aryaa8849 Paige is passive by nature. You might want to listen to post games for the last few years. Geno is on her case all the time about not coming to get the ball, not taking enough shots, passing up open shots, etc..
And he's flat out wrong. Maya Moore was UConn most aggressive player. She has 15 games where she took 20+ shots in her 150+ games at UConn. Paige has played 94 games and she has 12 where she's taken 20+ shots. 4 if those were in the tournament last year, the other was in a win vs South Carolina her freshman year. Paige went 12-16 on 2s in this game. Missed her 4 3s but that happens. No one could stop her but she doesn't have the ball in her hands and when she cuts her teammates don't pass unless it's Sarah or Jana.
Oh man, what a hit piece. Nice job. Take a few possession and break down. In this game Paige usage rate was 33% HH was 30%, miles 21%. So PB is getting the ball. Geno knows he has a problem in Ice but needs her as only have her and El Alfy. Did you notice that Ice started on bench in 2nd half and on she got 7 min in comparison to 15 min first half. El Alfy started 2nd half. Shade soots 57% from that. Elbow , it is her hot spot and was best chance to get her going. Chen only had 3 TO vs ND which is good and overall UConn only had 13 TOV which is the best in team has done against them this season The depth thing in press conference was in response to last year after Louisville lost to UConn Jeff Walz talked about how lack of depth can be a good think if it is not best players out / because don't have to worry about unhappy players and everyone transferring out. As well he talked in press conference how he likes SS at the 5 and will use that more in the future. So think UConn offence will be fine and don't want them to go to the JuJu USC or Iowa CC offence with PB. Very hard to win a game if u lose FT attempts 5 to 14, 3pt shooting 10/18 Vs UConn 3/16 & Reb battle 38 to 30 and give up 14 offensive rebounds.
Nice video but as a ND fan I find it interesting Niele outcoached Geno. Because Niele was outcoached herself at the Cayman Islands Tournament in November when they lost to TCU and Utah. But the lack of depth was a factor in those games because Hannah looked gassed vs. Utah.
Same offense since 1990, but how do you help the scoring when there is no scoring ? Shade, Chen, Cheli, Zeibell, open shots in many games, and they miss. IN practice it is easy to hit shots, but in the game time speed and pressure people hurry and your shot changes, so THEY MISS.. That simple ! Paige is running around shooting on the run. Azzi, Caroline to me can stay on the bench until next year, when they can get healthier. Shade needs to go back to her pre-freshmen shooting days. Cheli and Zeibell have to shoot at practice in a hurried practice. KK is not the point guard everyone thinks she is. She can do Tik Tok, and not much more. KK and Chen, stop forcing passes and move the ball around. Now the bigs. Brady can't catch the ball like last year, El Alfy still isn't ready, maybe at the end of the year, but not now. Weak side defense is a bad option, player can't get back fast enough to bother their 3pt shot. Too much standing around watching Paige try to score. Too many missed layups, lack of toughness at the rim. It will not matter if we have a 6' 6 or 6"7 player, the bigs have to get tough in the paint and trust Geno and the staff. Now for Geno, we are winning and everyone is happy, start losing and all are upset. His motion offense is still very good, everyone can score, but they have to score, they cannot keep collapsing and hurry to recover. Every player needs to trust Geno and believe as he pulls more out of them than they ever knew. It is the same in any sport. Keep encouraging one another, and stop complaining. I am a fan since 1990, go with the good and the bad, so let's have fun, again. LET'S GO HUSKIES !
Also ice and Sarah can do things other teams cannot like set picks, box out and rebound. I like the play where Paige rubs off Ice for a handoff and Sarah’s available to do that too. Sarah and Ice are athletic and have strength and it’s tough to move them off their spot. As soon as the offense utilizes there two athletes better ( picks and screens and back door passes lobs to the rim etc) things will improve.
Watching the game, it was astounding how Paige was still able to score 25pts despite not having the ball for what feels like 70% of the game. Paige needs to use her unselfishness to be selfish - by not premeditating her decision, FAKE THE PASS, if the help doesn't commit: lay it up, if they do: pass. Take the time. Paige and Sarah needs to be the UCONN two man game. Sarah is skilled and smart so her and Paige needs to be the one who carries their team.
She play better in the WNBA with a coach that give her more offensive freedom. A lot of major college programs and too systematic not allowing players to express their creativity.
@Matthew-xl5bc I think that's why it's called a Program to begin with. Not only the stars are given importance but all the recruits. Auriemma's approach though was flawed, coz no Azzi Fudd means he chose to play 3 PG's in Chen, KK and PB - where only Paige can shoot consistently outside. Can't have ball handlers without gravity. Not only that but Chen and KK are small too - and can't pull a lob entry pass whenever Paige rolls or cuts. In this game, Paige was playing as their SF, not PG based on their schemes and what she's doing offball.
Gotta say it's still a pleasure to watch the Huskies play. El Alfy finishes with her weak hand around the rim when most can't/don't. And Strong slipping screens. Smart basketball.
Geno's postgame comment about Paige carrying the team wasn't a slight against her, it was a slight against the rest of the team. Paige carrying the team wasn't the problem; the problem was her having to do so. UConn played much more aggressive defense, yet ND still made 60 shot attempts compared to UConns 64. That's not acceptable. If ND can take 60 shots against UConn's defense, UConn should have attempted closer to 80 against ND's lack of it. For the second quote, Geno has said in the past that he likes short rotations, so his comment doesn't surprise me. It's still a dumb way to look at it. It's fine to play a short rotation in must-win games, sure, but we all saw what it did to UConn last year deep into March Madness. UConn would have played for a championship last year with 1-2 more players on their bench, instead of Iowa. They just didn't have enough gas in the tank at the end - ND won't, either, if they don't get some players back by year's end.
Good video. Watching UConn was like watching the LA Sparks last year. This stupid commitment to ‘team equality’ leads to an inflexible commitment to a ‘system offense’ in which you have your best players (eg, Paige and Jackson for the Sparks) standing in a corner watching three lesser players trying to create offense. But you create offensive advantages and cause double teams by using your best offensive weapons, not have them stand in a corner! Lmao I dislike these system offenses that seem to kill the offensive creativity of the best players. It feels like Paige is being muzzled by being forced to play in a system, and you can see this especially with Dawn Staley who seems to be intent on beating the offensive creativity out of Milaysia Fulwiley. Fulwiley might want to look at the case study of Talaysia Cooper who went from averaging 3 ppg at South Carolina to playing like a borderline All American at Tennessee. I also like how you called out the Geno doublespeak on Paige needing to be aggressive and less aggressive somehow someway. 😂 And also how he was complaining about having too much depth! I remember reading John Wooden and how he would take the 5 worst players on his team every year and tell them straight up they probably were not going to play because the best players should play the majority of the minutes. It’s a meritocracy, not a democracy! Some players are better than others and they should be the one making the decisions and taking the shots. You also see this with South Carolina. Their stupid commitment to ‘team equality’ has them starting Bree Hall, Fagin, and Raven Johnson over better players like Watkins, Tessa Johnson, and Fulwiley. Really baffling. I can see why a 4-star recruit would be attracted to these ‘system’ schools. But why would the most talented 5 star recruits consider playing in those places. I shudder to think of Geno or Dawn beating the creativity and talent out of players like Caitlin Clark, Juju Watkins, and Hannah Hidalgo. There are other places that seem more willing to build systems around their most talented places rather than forcing their most talented players into a system. What Dawn is doing to Fulwiley is criminal! Lmao
This is a really bad take. The system that South Carolina runs clearly works as they’ve won twice in the past 3 years. SC is known for developing players for the WNBA and their offensive system 100% helps them become Fundamental basketball players. A’ja, Alisha gray, Aaliyah Boston are products of that system.
Also, fulwiley is talented but either you don’t understand basketball or you aren’t actually watching South Carolina games. Fulwiley makes some really bad passes that sometimes end up in turnovers. I hope hunter makes a video about this because I’ve been seeing too much people saying stuff like this on social media.
UCONN was of 0/7 from 3s and 3/16 from 3s for the entire Game. Notre Dame made 10 Three Pointers and shot over 55% from 3s. That's not a Coaching problem. Notre Dame played at Home and shot 14 free throws compared to a total of 5 free throws for UCONN. That's not a coaching problem. Just before this game, likely their BEST shooter was injured and didn't play, that's not a Coaching problem. UCONN best overall player was saddled with 3 early fouls, that's not a Coaching problem. So don't confuse Home Cooking and STREAKS with somebody being outcoached.
ND shot way better than their average from long range and UConn didn't. End of story. Most teams wouldn't get away with taking the shots ND did. When a team gets hot like that, there isn't much a coach can do. Three point shots: UConn 3 of 16, ND 10 of 18. Paige and Sarah helped keep it close but they missed 9 of those 16 threes.
@@briankeefe476 Exactly what I'm talking about. The entire ND team was sinking the long balls though. Just like UConn. they have weak post players. Both Sarah and King play like wings. It was essentially 4 guards on both sides. UConn won the paint but ND crushed them from outside.
They lost because Ashlyn, chen and Arnold are not reliable against the best guards...watch as the season progresses. The center position is not great. Sarah is still a freshman and in the big games down the road she will be exposed. Maybe they can improve but in my opinion this is not a championship team.
Excellent commentary of Geno definitely getting tactically killed in this game. Once Notre Dame got the momentum UCONN fell too far behind and was playing catch up the entire game. Sarah needs to come off picks going high low and baseline to baseline same with Paige. UCONN never really got into their offense.

With Fudd, the offense will run through 3 major threats. Floor will be spread. Shade going 0-4 and dropping below the 3 point line allowing Hidalgo to hit her 2nd 3 put her on the bench. An offensive hole presented then on UCONN when KK played (outside shot). Paige no 3's in 3 games. Tends to go away from outside shot after a few misses.
Geno being outcoached started about 4 years ago when it comes to be games. his stars usually bail him out. last year due to all the injuries, when they got to the tournament he was force to coach his but off. now he settling back to his bad habits. if Paige wants to be the point forward, that's how he should be using her. with the ball in her hands from the get-go. allowing Citron to guard Paige was laughable. he never exposed that mistake by the ND coach. also who else is tired of Azzi Fudd being absent when they have a big game. she pulled this crap last year. Ankle sprain. we use to wrap that up with red-hot and get back on the court. either get better rehab, training or gear, but do something other than what you did in the past. tired of seeing scholarship players sit in street sweats. now they have at least 4. Paige is not aggressive enough, which is why she wont be as good in the WNBA. Thank God for KK. Strong getting those 3 early fouls hurt them. and don't get me started about the ref and one sided homer calls.
Auriemma is a great coach, but when the team loses, it's always the player's fault, never coaching. When Iowa women lost recently, their coach took the blame.
Have the players shut him out a bit or is he more interested in doing social media these days (not talking about UCONN) rather than focusing that energy on his players.
I disagree with you in one area. At the press conference after the game Geno admitted with coaching, they have to do better. That’s about as close as you will get from him, taking the blame for poor coaching. ❤
It was a tough 1st time experience for every UConn player except Paige….no floor communication. But ultimately, the refs were TERRIBLE, not calling ND fouls until the end of the game when it meant nothing, yet targeting Strong !!! Think what you want, but NO WAY ND was going 3 down in the loss column at home with a sold out arena !!! PERIOD !
reading other comments, EVERYONE is right, Paige needs to have the ball in her hands and not these lesser guards. Bigs move your feet and get tough. Foul out but for playing tough, not stupid reaching fouls. Shade fix your shooting hands, and drive, then pull up, and go to the free throw line. Stop talking about Azzi, she'll play when she is ready, same as Caroline. By the way, Caroline, is an open scholarship that should have been used, similar to Deberry and Inez B
All coaches, in any sport, get the game wrong; remember what Mulkey did last year against Iowa? And in this game the fact that the long players did little certainly didn't help him. But to say that Auriemma is an average coach means that you have not correctly evaluated UConn's constant presence in the Final Four in the years from 2016 onwards (except 2023) and that last year, with a crippled team, UConn was one whistle from the final.
14 consecutive Final Fours from 2008 to 2022. And 15/16 since 2008. Yeah, that's lousy coaching. And they made it last year with only 6-7 healthy players when no one expected them to.....against teams with 9-10 man rotations. And Geno has not been able to get top centers to come to UConn in quite a while. Stewart and Charles were the last 2 "bigs" of note. It's hard to battle with SC, ND, Stanford, etc. when your "center" is 6-3 or 6-2.
UCONN's biggest issue vs top tier teams is they don't have enough top end talent. Bueckers & Strong r stars but the rest of the roster r not that good. The 4th best players on ND, SC, UCLA r better than all UCONN players not named Paige or Sarah
Good vid for sure, I have to finish mine when I get off work but we hit some similar points. I’m with you that Paige’s “unselfishness” is cool until it’s time to go make something happen. That’s why I’m always loudly reluctant to over-value efficiency because sometimes it’s really just a player picking their spots. Every player isn’t on a team good enough to have that luxury and in this game UConn realized too late that this was one of the rare occasions where they weren’t good enough to do that either.
Look wbb fans, I'm a South Carolina alum and life long fan, in many tussles with both teams, one thing I well know is that one game does not a season make, relax up in CT . . . and stay involved, all games have a winner and a loser.
You have a lot of guts to post this. Geno is one of the first to criticize, but it seems his fans think he's above criticism, which is laughable. The fact Hannah Hiladgo got so many open and often uncontested looks is insane given she lit them up last year. Also his decision to keep running the same offense in the first half when it obviously wasn't really working. I'll give him some credit in that he did acknowledge some of their mistakes, not necessarily his. 😂 Not sure when their next big game is, but I'm looking forward to seeing how he coaches it.
UConn don’t have a Geno problem This is probably the stupidest thing you’ve ever said the winners coach ever now all of a sudden he can’t coach cause he lost the game
I think it’s pretty funny how these RUclips channels come out and think they know everything! It is all for the clicks! Last time I checked Page played three years! Final four! National championship! And final four! Stop with all the bull crap and let Page play!
I can't blame this on Geno. He does a lot of good for the team. His team faced a tougher opponent that came from a P5 conference and had far more "unity," and was tested already. UCONN had a coast of a schedule and easily is probably going to have a cheap season against weaker competition. They aren't tested. Paige had plenty of options in the game, but she's typically unable to beat her cover or post up and dominate in the post like she did last year. She's simply playing out of position--which isn't a fault of the coach, as this is the team composition this year. Paige hasn't been focused on that end. And I believe they gave Ice Brady that option because of the matchups. Paige can't beat a 6-2 stronger player that matches her. Chen can't beat Hannah at all. And Sarah was in foul trouble. So, I don't really see any other alternatives they have since Miles wins her matchup and the center is really good at blocking shots and playing the lanes. They don't have any other advantageous option because Paige can't win reliably and Miles/ Hidalgo win their matchups every time. Sarah unfortunately is like dead-even due to her foul trouble. He had to find something and honestly the Ice Brady layup attempts aren't that bad--provided she could have made the shots. I have watched both Louisville and this game and another game or two for UCONN earlier and the entire thing has been the same exact thing: the team is simply not built to win with these small-ball lineups against teams with real size and bulk.
@@aryaa8849 She wasn't really guarded like that, so she beat whatever game plan that they had around her to miss layups or get blocked. We can't say that Ice Brady was playing great or anything, but she was literally out there with the potential to "do something" to impact the game.
Silly clickbait. Players win and lose games. South Carolinas loss to Iowa in the 2023 semi-finals showed the limits of coaching. Staley went out and got some shooters, and suddenly, she was a good coach again. UCONN's issue was trying to contend with an obvious ND quickness advantage. They need more KK Arnold's.
UConn isn't as athletic as they've been in recent years. They'll lose if they get involved in track meets. Slow down and keep El Alfy and Strong in the game at the same time; that's where they're advantage is. Good gosh, ND killed them on the boards. King had 6 ORB's.
They are missing multiple starters and ND had to shoot the lights out from 3 and still were up by only 2 possessions with 7 minutes left. UConn shot dismal from 3 ...3 for 16 and the wide open shots getting missed by Shade and others, wouldn't have likely been all missed by Fudd. Shade who wouldn't be playing if Fudd doesn't sprain her knee the game before, missed every shot she took. Hard to win win a started gives you zero points, replacing a double digit scorer in Fudd. Griffin who they sorely missed last year in the final 4 and again now adds the rebounding, athleticism, defense, etc... they are missing. I would love UConn's chances in NCAA tourney game if Griffin and Fudd are healthy and nobody else goes down to injury. Also, Strong will be even better and she got screwed on 2 phantom fouls that gave her 3 in the first half. ND really couldn't guard her. but she had to be less aggressive in the 2nd half with 3 fouls to start the half.
I do feel like off ball movement has as much to do with the level of facilitators as the cutters - for example, everyone has always said Paige is better off the ball than Caitlin, but I’ve never thought that was totally true, I just always thought Paige played with better passers (like ONO and Aaliyah as you said) than Caitlin did. For example in the UConn/Iowa game when when Nika had Caitlin locked up in the first case, I remember DT saying “it’s good to learn to play off the ball!” But the issue wasn’t really Caitlin not getting open, it was her teammates not being able to get her the ball when she would get open. So interesting to see this play out with Paige (especially after being told I was crazy by UConn stans for years, but I digress)
Nonsense video. UConn is missing several starters, they shot terrible form 3...3 for 16. If they shoot just bad from 3...say 5 or 6 for 16, they likely win the game. Shade who would never be starting ahead of Fudd had zero points, No way if Fudd could play she is scoring zero, she's guaranteed double digits. Also, Fudd's shooting means you can't essentially cheat to help on Bueckers b/c Shade and others are no outside threat. Let's not forget ND shot far over their heads from 3. If UConn is health in March, with Fudd and Griffin they win a rematch. ND played the best they can, above their heads, Uconn the worst and without several players and it was a 2 possession game with 6 mins left.
Unbelievable - title...Click bait - That's all this is...Best coach ALL-Time...Yet people like to criticize..Gets worse every year...That's too bad....I didn't bother to listen or watch..Just ONLY to comment on this title...Go huskies..
Are you all crazy geno the problem it's the players 1 game you all go crazy on uconn. They say thats ok notre dam lost twice south carolina lost they lost 5 last year i think and was 2 game away from chp and clark and her team got given the game played against uconn so dont you all dirty d-gs count them out so early i h--e you all
Yeah. He stinks. Only made 14 out of the past 15 Final Fours. Atrocious. And a streak of 14 consecutive from 2008-2022. His only flaw in the past several years is not getting a quality BIG girl to compete against the other excellent bigs. They've all become WNBA players but were so-so at UConn.
@@briankeefe476 In the last decade Iowa has made as many final games as UConn, and UConn is loaded with blue chip talent, Iowa only had two top 40 recruits on the entire team.
I'm sure they'll figure it out, but nothing happening this year with UConn makes me feel any different about thinking Paige should have come out last year.
The NIL money Paige makes this year is huge.....far more than in the WNBA. And with CC coming out last year, even more reason to wait. Next year will be Paige's year. If she stays healthy, she will excel in the pro game because double teaming her will allow her to rip other teams apart. She doesn't have those options at UConn.
I know this is hard to comprehend. but it matters who are out. Geno wouldn't give a crap if he had 8 players if they are his core 8 that would play the most if all healthy. UConn is missing Fudd and Griffin(both will be back after Xmas break) . They have missed Ducharme with neurological issues for over a year. Geno would thrilled to have a limited roster if the ones 100% healthy were Buckers, Fudd, Strong, Ducharme, Griffin, Arnold and throw in El Alfy and Brady just for size, even if they aren't great players.
Where was this leadership I hear Paige has? Also how about this just got out played by ND it happens. ND was the better team. Too much of a system for me at UCONN let them just play and then coach make adjustments. Ivey knew every move.
The leadership was doing everything in her role Geno wants her to do, that’s the issue taking the ball out of her hands isn’t smart. Did you watch the video? Lol
Paige isn’t a great PG, SG sure but her passing is average, her defense is average and her 3 Pointer needs work. She also doesn’t command the ball and drive her team like a PG should
Paige is the best PG in the nation hence her being the #1 draft pick, the problem is she’s playing off ball because Geno wants her coming off half assed screens. She shoots 45% from 3 , and she’s got the best defensive rating in the country.
@@aryaa8849 she had the play PF last year when they only had 6 healthy players, she would still just get the ball and have to take over on offense when it came down to it because everyone else was hurt

USC did the same thing. Coaches think they are outsmarting teams by not using Juju or Paige for instance to be the first option in the offense and it’s not smart.
Are you talking about when USC played Notre Dame?
Inaccurate analysis for USC. They used JuJu as first option and she was shut down
@@AlexOtto I hardly think 24 points is being shut down but ok.
@@everybodylovesjuju12 4 or 6 of those were when ND had it in the bag and half assed the rest of the game
I hope you're right, but why experiment with this game? One with such mental risk/downside.
@@konga1653 I don't know if he was "experimenting" this game. He has shown he will teach "lessons" to his players from time to time even if it means possibly losing the game. It doesn't appear the team has figured out a clear identity and top 5-7 lineup. By March he will have.
Paige has to bring the ball up.
Agreed
Geno is using the same offensive sets he used for years. Paige should have the ball in her hands most of the time. Current scheme isn't working well.
We all need to have a little patience. It's a young team and Geno is still experimenting and evaluating and giving all the girls a good look
You are 100% correct. In games against top teams, Paige has to be involved in every offensive half court set. Having her off ball is like taking Caitlin Clark off point.
And everyone knows the schemes
@ Exactly.
If they lose and she takes 17 shots it's "she's too passive"
He wants KK, Kaitlyn, Ashlynn and Ice to be players they're not and then blames Paige when she can't save his schemes against top 5 teams.
Everyone is calling her "passive Paige" but if you compare her to other UConn stars and the load she actually has to carry it's not even close. And he's put so much pressure on her to win, but hasn't put her in the best position to succeed.
Yet her and Geno were one Call away last year from making the Women's NCAA finals. You are beyond confused.
@@RudCh01 If you are claiming ND defense is WEAK, you don't know basketball. LOL.
Paige could’ve probably had 40 if she had the ball in her hand. She scored almost 30 with barely any free throws

She scored 25. Just saying.
@@Kokobazonkos ya I know. Could’ve been more if she wasn’t running around a billion screens. Could’ve had more assists too
She also got hacked on at least 4 shots with no calls.
THERE IS NO CONNECTIVITY OF A TEAM AND IF ONE PLAYER TEAM EXPECTED TO WIN THE OTHERS BECOME DISCONNECTED --- CHEN WAS THE ONLY ONE PLAYING - GENO WANTS P D TO DO IT ALL AND THAT BS HAS TURNED THE TEAM INTO DYSFUNCTION--- LAST YEAR I OPINED ASH SHOULD GET OUT OF U CONN AS SHE IS JUST ANOTHER THROW AWAY PLYER IF PD DOESN'T SCORE 80 POINTS A GAME WHICH IS FCKNG INSANE - ASH HANGS IN THE CORNER ASH SHOULD BE WING GUARD SARA IN CORNER AND ACTIVE ALONG BASE-LINE AND INTO LANE FOR OPEN PASSES AND SHOTS - TEAM PLAY AND GENO ACTUALLY COACHING IS NEEDED WHAT YOU DID 15 YEARS AGO DON;

@@oneiric-diary I have no idea what that means, so I guess I'm just of a different generation - LOL
Is there a video of how Cori Close out coached Dawn Staley in UCLA's blowout of South Carolina?
Sarah and Paige pnr i would love to see
That one's a head-scratcher; Brady was forcing some bad shots. It wasn't typical UConn basketball.
Every thing you just said is what I keep asking myself too
Q got minutes cause the game was over she was not a factor Chen and kk was the only other guards that showed up to play not named Paige Ash was a ghost and didn’t deserve to be on the court
The more PB handles the ball, the more players like Hannah and Lay will pick her pocket.😅
Completely agreed! Good analysis here
A geno problem is hilarious, Hidalgo has a massive game and all of a sudden geno can’t coach, down by one with a few seconds left in the 3rd. I enjoy your content, this one was a bit overstated
Nahhh. It has always been a problem that Geno won't let paige run offense and we keep saying she needs to (look at her freshmen yr) but no one sees it as a problem because we still win games
@ i think people are making too much of this game and by march we will see a different team
Chen only had 3 TO vs ND which is good and overall UConn only had 13 TOV which is the best in team has done against them this season
The depth thing in press conference was in response to last year after Louisville lost to UConn Jeff Walz talked about how lack of depth can be a good think if it is not best players out / because don't have to worry about unhappy players and everyone transferring out.
As well he talked in press conference how he likes SS at the 5 and will use that more in the future.
So think UConn offence will be fine and don't want them to go to the JuJu USC or Iowa CC offence with PB. Very hard to win a game if u lose
FT attempts 5 to 14,
3pt shooting 10/18 Vs UConn 3/16
& Reb battle 38 to 30 and give up 14 offensive rebounds.
I thought the same thing last night. Paige was off ball way too much. No one seemed to be running the offense.
Gotta say it's still a pleasure to watch the Huskies play. El Alfy finishes with her weak hand around the rim when most can't/don't. And Strong slipping screens. Smart basketball.
Motion offense only works great with high iq players
Love this type of video
It was a citron problem not a geno problem. Checkout my breakdown
Thanks again for this wonderful video
Yeah, Gino's a "problem" that every other school would love to have. I think we'll keep him. 😂
Hidalgo's 3's were insanely high up in the air. I don't know how they go in. The odds will even up over the season.
The exact same Coach that took a lesser Team last year ONE play from being in the NCAA finals is a Problem. LOL.
Can you do more of these videos breaking down UConn’s possessions
Careful a lot of Geno's faithful fans will probably come after you. Man are they sensitive. 😂
Chris Daly is the real coach of UConn
Have the players shut him out a bit or is he more interested in doing social media these days (not talking about UCONN) rather than focusing that energy on his players.
I just hope Nika is here... This team looks so different with her and Paige as a duo
He outgrew his coaching days. He's busy with something else
I disagree with you in one area. At the press conference after the game Geno admitted with coaching, they have to do better. That’s about as close as you will get from him, taking the blame for poor coaching. ❤
We are done with the 90s. Hannah HiDAWGo 🤧
PERIOD !
placing citron 3rd in the mock draft is insane tho. look how she struggles defensively against PB
She did very well on Paige lol
Citron was not holding Paige by herself
@@HunterCruse14she fouled Paige all game and still gave up 25 points having help
Interesting, but what does this have to do with Ta'niya Latson. (The #1 guard in the NCAAW that you have probably never heard of.)
reading other comments, EVERYONE is right, Paige needs to have the ball in her hands and not these lesser guards.
Geno is the master at recruiting but only an average coach.
Whoa, 11 NCAA National Champs...Hello?
Probably the best recruiter ever and an experienced coach but that loss to ND was brutal with a capital “B”
UConn can’t just be all Paige though
My sentiments exactly
Half court offense and defense was so so poor this game for real
ANYONE HAVE SALES SPECS ON PAIGES NIKES YET??
UConn don’t have a Geno problem This is probably the stupidest thing you’ve ever said the winners coach ever now all of a sudden he can’t coach cause he lost the game
I think it’s pretty funny how these RUclips channels come out and think they know everything! It is all for the clicks! Last time I checked Page played three years! Final four! National championship! And final four! Stop with all the bull crap and let Page play!
Time for Geno to retire. His time has past
Who did ice beat?
TLDW - Kaitlyn Chen is terrible.
I said this last year when they lost to Iowa... Great Video, Great analysis
Kk freshman point guard starting on team that went to the final four why is she coming off the bench
Geno has to start jana and kk because ice is not that great and Chen can come off the bench you can see it when jana and kk are on the court
Chen was not a problem. Unlike KK Chen can shoot the 3
I think Geno need start Jana and KK to but put Ice and Ashlynn on the bench Chen and KK play are right last night.
Never liked an armchair quarterback
So many experts. How many national championships have you won?
Good video.
Are you all crazy geno the problem it's the players 1 game you all go crazy on uconn. They say thats ok notre dam lost twice south carolina lost they lost 5 last year i think and was 2 game away from chp and clark and her team got given the game played against uconn so dont you all dirty d-gs count them out so early i h--e you all
I agree that it's a little bit Geno's fault and a little bit Paige's fault.
Love all the UConn, and Geno haters. You can spew all the hate and UConn is done you want. Let's see who is where the end on March.
Get off RUclips, another critic who probably never coached the sport !
Or you can simply leave and never come back. I know that's what I prefer.
The game has passed him by. He has had top 3 talent for decades but he hasn't won a title in years.
I mean come on, what coach does at that level of competition?
Yeah.
Geno lamented all last year about his limited roster. And rightly so. But now it's a benefit for Notre Dame. Good grief Geno.
😂 right, like what are you saying here geno?
I know this is hard to comprehend. but it matters who are out. Geno wouldn't give a crap if he had 8 players if they are his core 8 that would play the most if all healthy. UConn is missing Fudd and Griffin(both will be back after Xmas break) . They have missed Ducharme with neurological issues for over a year. Geno would thrilled to have a limited roster if the ones 100% healthy were Buckers, Fudd, Strong, Ducharme, Griffin, Arnold and throw in El Alfy and Brady just for size, even if they aren't great players.
Geno is 90. Paige isnt generational. Problem sorted.
lllllll
Where was this leadership I hear Paige has? Also how about this just got out played by ND it happens. ND was the better team. Too much of a system for me at UCONN let them just play and then coach make adjustments. Ivey knew every move.
The leadership was doing everything in her role Geno wants her to do, that’s the issue taking the ball out of her hands isn’t smart. Did you watch the video? Lol
55% ND 3 pt shooting vs 18% for UConn. That was the game. ND made the shots. But I doubt they make the Elite 8 this year.
Paige isn’t a great PG, SG sure but her passing is average, her defense is average and her 3
Pointer needs work.
She rarely plays PG since last season
@@aryaa8849 she had the play PF last year when they only had 6 healthy players, she would still just get the ball and have to take over on offense when it came down to it because everyone else was hurt
@ last year Nika is uconn main ball handler most of the time. Paige usually only starts during 4th quarter or when Nika is fouled out
@@aryaa8849 watch the Big East tournament and March Madness who had the ball to initiate the offense? When games matter it was Paige because she was the best PG on the team she just was also the only one who could play PF .
What was your first clue.
