WALL-E Intro

  • The intro to WALL-E combines an image of a post-apocalyptic Earth with the post-war vocals of "Hello Dolly." It connects the post-apocalypse to the aesthetics of the 50s ("Hello Dolly" is actually from the 60s, but still), the period both of the birth of consumer society and of nuclear paranoia, an image reinforced by the subsequent 50s stylings of the Buy 'n' Large outlets we see a bit later. I'm intrigued as to why this is the style we still reach to, 60 or so years later, when we want to represent the end of the world.

Fun Fact: This movie was the very first movie that I ever got to watch at an actual movie theater. I remember seeing the teaser for this movie back in 2007, a year before the film's actual release. When I first saw WALL-E's design, I instantly fell in love with him. He had such a charming and unique personality, even if it were just through the trailers. I literally begged and pleaded with my dad to see the film next year in June of 2008, which was the month of the film's theatrical release. I had never gone to a cinema prior to WALL-E's release: before, I had just watched all of the movies we owned through our DVD releases. While watching the movies at home is a great experience, it did not have the same charm as actually going to a movie theater to see it on release. This was the movie that I wanted to see the absolute most that year, and by God I waited patiently for that movie to hit its June 2008 release window. And when the day of the film's release finally arrived, I kept begging and pleading for my dad to take me to my local movie theater. And as such, a few days after the film releases, we get in the car, and drive to a nearby city next to the small town I live in. We currently have two movie theaters that are close to us: Galaxy 10 and an AMC Classic theater which used to belong to Carmike Cinemas. But, there was a 3rd movie theater as well, in the same city that our Carmike theater was located in. It was right next to our local Hastings store (may Hastings rest in peace). A while later, that movie theater in particular was closed permanently and eventually was replaced with a Dollar Tree grocery store. While I can't remember the exact name of the theater, I remember that's the one we went to. Anyways, we pull up to the theater, get our tickets, and sit in the chairs in the theater, waiting for the previews to start. I kid you not, I could NOT stay seated as my body was full of excitement. This was the first movie I was ever going to see in an actual theater. In my eyes, this was going to be an absolute memorable moment in my life. And when the previews started, I got more excited. I literally was jumping around in the seat, and my dad had to literally get me to stop and stay still, seated in the chair. And then, the film finally started, and I just sat there, watching the film, not saying a word. I sat there and watched in awe as I listened to WALL-E's very limited type of vocabulary, and as he fell for Eve, who he refers to as Eva. I was getting emotionally attached to the characters in the theater. And when WALL-E was crushed, oh man, that shed some tears. That felt like a punch to the gut. And when we finally walked out of the theater, I said I loved the movie and couldn't wait for its DVD release. We eventually got the movie on DVD when it finally had its physical release on home media, and I have watched it God knows how many times at this point. Nevertheless, I will never forget this film for being the first film I ever got to see in a movie theater. I have seen a lot of films inside cinemas now, but before WALL-E, I never saw a single movie of any kind in the cinema. That was the turning point. This film truly had a cultural impact on my life, and it was a truly amazing experience to get to see it in theaters. A part of me wants Disney to do a theatrical re-release of WALL-E as an anniversary celebration so I can relive that experience all over again. =)

    Out there
There's a world outside of Yonkers
Way out there beyond this hick town Barnaby
    There's a slick town Barnaby
    Out there
Full of shine and full of sparkle
Close your eyes and see it glisten Barnaby
    Listen Barnaby
    Put on your Sunday clothes
There's lots of world out there
Get out the brillantine and dime cigars
We're gonna find adventure in the evening air
Girls in white in a perfumed night
Where the lights are bright as the stars
    Put on your Sunday clothes
    We're gonna ride through town
In one of those new horse drawn open cars
We'll see the shows at Delmonicos
And we'll close the town in a whirl
And we won't come home until we've kissed a girl

0:30-1:15: I agree with the analysis in the description.
The fact that this song gradually fades out into a distant echo makes it even more memorable, much more so than if it had reached its natural conclusion or ended abruptly. I feel like it helps signifies humankind (and most o life's) gradual departure (or extinction) from Earth, and evokes a melancholic atmosphere to this sad scene of our planet.

I love how the music and the galaxy and stars go so perfectly together in the beginning, and it creates a very charming intro, and then it shows our deserted Earth filled with garbage and remains of what once was beaming with life and civilization, and yet the happy music still plays. What’s even more ironic is the music describing a world that is completely different than the world you’re being shown. It really shocked me the first time, and it’s quite unsettling if you think about it. This intro is so cool but it fills me with a deep sense of sadness. Like... this really could happen. The Earth can become such a barren wasteland, populated by robots that live on forever, endlessly sorting garbage left behind by humans who have been long gone. Overall, this movie really makes you think...

Responding to your description: I think the 50s/60s is chosen because of the smuggness and self righteousness of the time. Gaining TVs, plastic, microwaves, etc en large made people pretty optimistic about the future and pretty smug about where they were now. Fast forward and we see the negative effects of all this single use plastic and other inventions which werent earth friendly at all. Its an easy place to point to as the beginning of the rapid decline. Though I think its more accurate to look back at all the industrial revolutions and similar points in history, its admittedly an easy and modern symbol to point to that transition period where consumerism grew so rampantly as though resources were infinite.

I love WALL-E. After re watching it after many years, I can say its one of my favorite movies ever. But there is one thing that has stuck with me. I am not sure what to call it or if anyone out there cares as much as I do, but, the idea of a ruined city, vast open areas and a song playing in the distance. This idea was gifted to me by WALL-E and I haven't been able to find a lot similar to it since. What first sparked this vibe to me was the song "Aftermath" by Caravan Palace. But that part isn't a huge part of the song. I found it again with "In the Garden" by Red Vox and here am. If anyone out there knows about this depressing, lonely feeling and has a name for it, please tell me where to find more.

Nuclear power plant is Three Mile Island, the city skyline was I though New York City, but it's actuality Virginia Beach or a futuristic Chesapeake Bay city. The shipyard in the movie is in Chesapeake Bay. The wind farms are in the rural hillsides of Pennsylvania and West Virginia and Maryland. So ultimately Wall-E takes place in the Mid-Atlantic US.

That’s an interesting theory. I always thought it was Charlotte or Atlanta but the shipyard seems to tie it together

Man, I really love the sci-fi genre and I think that WALL•E is the first sci-fi I ever liked and introducing me to other sci-fis such as Portal and Dead Space,
But honestly, WALL•E is very special and smarter than any sci-fi I ever looked at
They really managed to tell the audiences to understand what's going on with a few dialogue, and with the help of music and little expressions too, And also they managed to tell the audience to keep protecting the earth without wasting environments without involving aliens and monsters, unknown things out there in space, Which it's unique. And one more thing a robot being main character for a sci-fi story is kind of a rare considering many humans is the main characters of most sci-fi story, WALL•E is the masterpiece sci-fi ever Pixar created and yet Pixar can't and never will ever made another movie that will be good as much as WALL•E even as yet they tried to make Lightyear.

I've seen this Pixar animated film about few times and it's absolutely fantastic. I'd say it's one of the best Pixar films I've ever seen! It is one of my favourite Pixar films of all time.
Also my favourite characters are Wall E, EVE and M-O.
I remembered seeing this at Movies @ Dundrum in my home city, Dublin, Ireland twice in summer 2008. I was 18 in the year 2008.
A part of this intro can be creepy especially when it shows WALL-E treading several "dead" or inactive WALL-E units and music. This may be unsettling to some viewers.

Now this is how you open a film! The juxtaposition of the upbeat music with the dystopian backdrop, pure genius.
