    I've known for a few years I'm far too low, but cannot bring myself to increase. Especially with the girls bringing in all the pinterest & IG photos. I've spent up to 5 hours and many supplies/product and only charge $120. I'm ashamed and i hate myself every time I do it. You think that'd be motivation enough, but I'm stuck. I love that you made this video. I'll keep rewatching it. I need to make a change. I'm miserable.

      I am going to raise my prices I have a couple of clients that I started doing after the covid shutdown so Time hey are you full highlight, and a trim on short hair and charge 145 the only problem is I have a few people like that and they come in with free written checks and just hand them over to me at the end of the service without asking if I raise my prices, so I’m gonna get a flyer put a price menu on my station. I work in a salon with four chair rentals and two of the girls charge about $20 more than I do and hairdressing is a hard job on your body and your mind because you have to be healthy and strong. Mentally pick up on their energy and sometimes they come in with bad energy and it actually stays with me for several hours. Maybe I’m very sensitive. I’m not sure, but I am not sure what to do.

    It really does come down to both pricing strategy, AND approach + mindset. I just did a video on this as well because there's so much involved in that decision, it can be so intimidating. I believe first and foremost the mindset shift here is crucial. Great video!

    Have recently subscribed and soooo glad that I did! You are absolutely amazing Jamie - so refreshing to see stylists of your caliber having such a warm and down to earth character. It is so helpful when you explain what levels and tones of color that you use. I felt that you were talking straight to me in this video, couldn't quite believe how it impacted me. You re affirmed my worth! (by the way - what color have you used on your hair, it's absolutely stunning) You're an absolute star :-))))))))!!

    Wow you really broke it down. A lot of these things I always think about but you made me aware of some new ways to look at it. I think that you shouldn't compare your prices to other people's, but you should definitely take into consideration your region and market. I am in NYC and I only do private clients, mostly one at a time unless its several friends or relatives, so I take those both into consideration. And in NYC everything is more, rent, food, travel supplies etc. I think that stylists often forget but not only are we service providers, but we are salespeople and advertisers for ourselves and our services. And for that we do have to explain why we offer them value at the prices we charge. Great video with excellent advice :-)

      I thinking must have Alot of energy I’m 61 now been doing hair. For 40 years when I was in my forties I worked 50 plus hours too I did that last year too to get ahead need up sick and loss 2 months of money being divorced and single it was very difficult financially, so I think it’s good to take care of your health and not get burned out and frustrated because it could be a setback like it did for me I think charging more will make your job more pleasant because you will not be resentful for charging too little on clients that expect Ask the prices from five years ago or even 10 years ago

      Jamie Dana I recently graduate from cosmetology school and in the process of getting licensed. And have a booth rent job lined up. At school we used only Redken which i know pretty well. I’m all about charging more based on education and product cost and usage.
    But there is no way a service should be more expensive because it takes the stylist longer to do. The client will catch on fast.
    Also forget about these hourly rate stylists.

    I use Goldwell. And for a Full head of foils, toner cut and blowdry and style and i will spend time on them i charge £55! And for a Balayage or Ombre i charge the same! My boss takes 40% of my earnings for stock and chair. Ive tried switching salons but had dodgey experiences- i have such big goals. I want to learn and thrive! But until I drive i won't get the option too. And i dont earn enough to do my driving. Catch 22 much!!

    Hey Jamie: How often do you think stylists should make a price increase? And typically what percentage (or dollar amount) increase do you think is acceptable?

I'm going to so many new classes and updating myself however Ive only got 15 clients lol...( I used to have a few hundred) From California to Tennessee clientele is really different. any suggestions? I'm not too worried about pricing because I have a whole fresh start ,

    I would love to see a video for stylists who are just starting out and what we should charge. I live in a small town and most salons here charge super low. There is one higher end salon that charges a bit more (not much though). For example, a lot of salons charge $45-60 for a full foil. The problem is a lot of stylists here are still stuck 10 years in the past and not up to date with new trends. I feel like my work is worth way more than $45 for a full foil but I also feel like people in my town won’t come to me with higher prices, especially since I’m fresh out of school.

      I'll keep this in mind for a future video however you can still totally use this formula to help you find what you should be charging. Thanks for watching!

    I work at a Smartstyle so we have set base prices and it depends on the stylist regarding how much different color services cost. This was an awesome video! I always get super anxious trying to discuss pricing with clients because I get worried about them just not wanting anything because of prices. 😣😣

    id love to see your price breakdown on paper, do you have it on your website?

    • @JamieDana
      @JamieDana  5 лет назад

      Price totally depends on demand and your area! If you have questions about your pricing, I would compare to other stylists in your area and demand and go from there!

  • @kendratanner8707

    I haven't raised my prices for a long time. What used to take me 2.5 hours is now taking me 4 hours with a whole bunch more product as well. I hate to admit this, but I feel like to get my moneys worth I find myself rushing just to get that 25$ a hour I was hoping for. If I charged more, I would feel like I could take my time and get a better result.

    • @JamieDana

    • @JamieDana
      @JamieDana  5 лет назад

      That totally depends on your location and demand! I would ask the stylist that you are assisting to see what they would recommend!

  • @init4hair

    Can I ask what u charge? I thought about charging by the hour but sometimes coloring short hair takes me just as long as long hair and I think clients expect short hair to be cheaper. So I feel guilty charging for short hair what I would charge for long hair. Also just wondering if u have a set haircut prices or do u charge for those according to the time it takes like u would color? Great vid!👍🏻

    • @JamieDana
      @JamieDana  5 лет назад

      Don't feel guilty charging what you are worth! It's not about the length of hair, but about the expertise that goes into cutting it.

    And what about your employees. Do salon owners raise the stylists commission? I don't think so!

    • @JamieDana
      @JamieDana  5 лет назад

      It totally depends on the salon. I've had lots of stylist friends who have had the commissions raised.

    • @themajesticunitard2527
      @themajesticunitard2527 4 года назад

      If the owner raises the price and your commission is a percentage of the service YES the stylist gets paid more. If you’re at 50/50 commission and your price of a hair cut goes from $20 to $30 then that stylist makes $5 more on that service. Which for a haircut is basically a $5 an hour raise (if you hustle anyway). Which is fantastic.

    • @themajesticunitard2527
      @themajesticunitard2527 4 года назад

      To put $5 into perspective $5x40 hours= 200 extra per week. Say you want to take some vacation so you only work 50weeks if the year. That’s an extra $10,000 a year. Small raises in prices make a huuuuge difference for both the owner and the stylist.
