India’s Mega Naval Op Projects Power, Sends Out Strong Message

  • NEW DELHI: Last week, the Indian Navy showcased its maritime capabilities in the Arabian Sea, one that involved two carrier battle groups in the first such operation in over a decade. Two aircraft carriers-INS Vikramaditya and INS Vikrant-operated in the exercise that had the coordinated deployment of more than 30 combat aircraft. A carrier battle group projects power and sends out a strong message to the adversary as well, says Vice Admiral Shekhar Sinha (Retd), former Commander-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command. He was speaking to StratNews Global Editor-in-Chief Nitin A. Gokhale on ‘The Gist’.

Very rightly said Vice Admiral Shekhar Sinha sir, that we need 3 aircraft carriers.
But we shouldn't stop at defense.
4th, 5th, and 6th will make the enemy shiver and give us more control on Indian ocean.

Thanks to Nitin Gokhale for a very good overview from V Adm Sinha regarding the practicalities of two aircraft carriers and their impact on the naval capabilities of the country. Some of India's naval bases in the IOR, such as on the Andaman islands and other bases in the Arabian sea area were mentioned in passing. But one understands that India also has an agreement with Oman for the use of a naval base, as well as another airstrip and base under construction on an island belonging to Mauritius. Perhaps in subsequent episodes, it would be interesting to have an overview of India's naval bases in the IOR and how they coordinate with the navies of other nations, particularly the U.S. Navy with its base in Diego Garcia and the French Navy (which is also identified as an important maritime power working closely with India in the IOR), which presumably, has a base in the Reunion Islands. What do joint naval exercises between the Indian Navy and the navies of the U.S. and France, as well as other Quad members, Japan and Australia, achieve in practical terms? Are they mainly goodwill exercises that enhance inter-operability, or are there strategic maritime advantages to India?

The reason could be that this is a very strategic and intellectual discussion based channel. Maybe we all should talk about this channel in our WhatsApp groups. And also Nitin should try to work out some promotions online.

Two small aircraft carriers may scare Pakistan or some small nations but when you talk of China who plans to have 10 big size aircraft carriers by the end of this decade, how would the Indian navy plan to block the Malacca Strait with such a bad ratio of 10:2 or 10:3 even if you hypothetically claim that the PLAN does not have advanced or good hardware. The Chinese are no fools and probably already planned counter measures to such vulnerabilities. Image a scenario where in they send 4 or 5 of their aircraft carriers well in advance to different parts of the Indian Ocean or Arabian Sea where they have bases; would the Indian navy still have 1 or 2 of its aircraft carrier at Malacca?

LCA is a small plane... our aircraft carriers not being 'flat tops' planes spend too much fuel while taking off. This means either less pay load or, less range. We need marine Rafels ... another 36 of them ..or, 54 of them if we are going to have 3 aircraft carriers.

Not a very bright idea to operate 2 carriers in such close proximity. They become such easy targets. And use the advantage of covering a larger area by using the range of the naval fighters.IACs should be deployed at edges of the operating envelope of the mig 29s .such pics make for good photo ops.but bad strategy.

Does it really take a tactical nuclear anti ship missile to destroy a 100,000 tonne aircraft carrier? Can the biggest Chinese aircraft carrier survive a number of anti ship missile hits? Apparently, the Soviet Union used to talk about destroying the Nimitz Class aircraft carriers with nuclear missiles.
Do we need to sail into the Indian Ocean with our carrier battle groups to engage the enemy there? If an enemy naval group exits the Strait of Malacca and enters the Indian Ocean, it will not be able to turn far and go opposite to peninsular India, in order to avoid naval bombings. Perhaps, I am mistaken. Won't P-8 Orions be able to detect enemy shipping even before they cross the Malacca Strait?

Sir what is your thoughts about this government mentality towards navy? They must lack the understanding about navy. For the past 9 year no new aircraft carrier, no new helicopter carrier, no new submarines, no new nuclear submarines, no new destroyer type is sanctioned by this government. All the ships that joined are approved by previous government. After this batches next 7/8 years we will have very little capital ships addition. I would like to say this is navy's lost decades. They always put naval projects on hold due to fund shortage. Even we got only 36 Rafael for airforce. With LCA we can't win against Chinese. They have invested money on special forces and average infantry. They are now very well equipped but where we need long term pans and capital this government seems to lacking. What is your thoughts on this matter? Do you think next 6/7 years will be navy's lost time?

3 The airforce has been running. The MMCRA program for almost 18 years now and it is still confused on what it wants. Multiple governments over the last 12 years have asked them to take a call on it but for some reason they're super hesitant 🤷‍♂️
