Most impressive performance in winter considering the level of comfort, performance and price. Was obvious BMW would nail it. Now imagine longe-range i4 eDrive40 in summer conditions and admire its efficiency and close to record time

Well, it’s a very pricy car in my opinion (at least with some options). And there are other cars in the list achieving very similar times but are way cheaper. Comfort and ride quality are good for sure…and of course it was never cheap to drive BMW. ;-)

    • @Tanel3

Agreed. RWD with 17" wheels should be considerably better for fast long range trips. RWD i4 should have 3 kWh larger battery as well.

Nice video, Bjørn. Thanks for all the tests you performed, very fun and informative, as always.
I have this car on order but I'm still considering whether to flip it or not. I guess it's the best we can get right now for us looking for a car that offers a sporty driving experience with a proper overall quality, especially in the cabin.
BMW software developers could have a better sense of UI and UX so the the infotainment system is a bit nicer, but at least it's rock solid, stable and performance-wise it's ok. We have to remember that this specific car is still pre-production, and probably the software will get a lot better with the 07/22 and 11/22 updates. The app is also very good, something I understand not many other premium manufacturers can brag about.
    Cheers!

I have owned both Tesla and BMW, at the moment I have a Tesla. My opinion is that Tesla and BMW are aimed at different people. Tesla is for tech lovers and those who want the best of the best of what makes an electric car, an electric car. BMW is aimed at people who care more about what makes a good car, a good car. I still think, Tesla makes the best parts of what makes an car electric. But every other similarly priced premium car manufacturer makes everything else better, meaning everything that all cars have regardless of what it uses as fuel, steering, suspension, seats, sound proofing.

Because Tesla doesn’t resemble a proper car.. we grew up on german cars here. People are used to quality, nice interior, specific design language. Tesla looks like a Chinese shitbox. Technological gap is the easiest to close. German cars will kick Tesla out of Europe soon, it’s actually already happening.. Where I live, a year ago everybody was buying Tesla, now nobody is even shortlisting it.. there is too many better options that you can actually call a car. I test drive a Model Y recently, coming from a 11 years old Audi.. I didn’t know if I should laugh or cry.. it’s really bad car, but yes, it has nice TV… lol.

I was looking at your video in planning my next car, but it confirmed that for me that however good the engineering, the design is completely unacceptable. Ugly front and stick-on screen. Current 335i, owned from new, will be my last. Beyond disappointing. Great video though. Thx.

I am always amazed at the amount of videos you manage to produce and the enormous hours of work behind them. 👍 Would be cool if you could do an update winter test for the newest 2021 Model 3 LR with the 82kWh battery. I drive it now for 2 months and 4000+ km and just did a 1000km ride to Poland (not any test condition) and had 185Wh/km overall including periods of 120kmh in heavy rain and snow and a stretch of 150kmh. purely on 110kmh max over 400km it had 165 Wh/km. So i would wager that it could also do the winter run of your 1000km challenge in under 10hrs.

The only reason I am leaving Tesla is because they have the worst customer service when dealing with the large amount of issues I had on delivery day and the 4 or 5 issues I had fixed under warranty. The car is great but they don't build them well and the service is worse than what you get from a disgruntled mcdonalds worker. Almost everything Rich rebuilds has mentioned in his videos I have also experienced first hand.

Hej Bjørn, although still driving a diesel MHEV car, I am great fan and follower of your channel. I really appreciate your reviews. A couple of times a year I also do longer drives and if you are interested I am happy to share my current record as a reference for your 1000 km chart. Perhaps it could be used as another reference point to further push car manufacturers to make EVs even more efficient and charge even faster. I can even share the route with you.

True, but luckily in Europe we have en excellent motorway network that allows for 130 km/h as a general limit. Even more so, in Germany the 130 km/h is a recommendation but not a limit :-)
By my experience the unlimited sections even the typical handworker vans are travelling at speeds of 150 km/h or even faster. Wondering which EVs they will pick over the next years…
The right most lane is then almost completely occupied by trucks that occasionally even block the middle lane when overtaking, the so cold elefant rally :-)
Given the many obstructions e.g. traffic jams and construction sites spanning often over 10+ kilometers with only 5 kms until the next one, unless choosing to fly, higher speed is the option to make up for the lost time and get to your destination in relatively cosniderable time. This becomes especially important if one has a fix appointment in an other city that is 4-500 kms away and even more so if the plan is to even get home on the same day.
After all a hotel stay also increases the CO2 footprint, perhaps this is why it seems to be popular among EV drivers to sleep in the car :-)
Of course even on the Autobahn it is not always possible to come forward really fast and to do so you need the good quality roads, good weather, dense traffic but these are the same in case of Bjørn’s tests too.
But don’t get me wrong, I don’t want to propagate speeding and even less so reckless driving that I don’t do at all.
I simply wished to give Bjørn a real world reference point for his comparrisons, that he can quote when he makes the 1000km challenges.
This way he can keep pushing EV manufacturers to further extend the limits of technology, so that in a relatively short time, everybody can find an EV suiting his/her needs.

We don't know if it would take 200 kW or not. Even on Ionity's 350 kW chargers, I was only getting 150 kW many times. And the 175 kW on ABB chargers are only for 800 V cars.

I really like BMW interiors and driving feel. But this review makes me more confident in my decision to buy a Model 3 SR. Look at the figures: this car charges so fast and has such a big battery. But it uses SOO much energy, that the advantages of that just peel away. And for that you pay so much more.
    As always; great review! ☺️

@@lowelindroth7053 That's correct, just like a cheaper 320i has better range than an M8 Competition. Doesn't mean the 320i is better or that the M8 should be cheaper than the 320i. Range alone can't determine the price of a car.

The model 3 Standard will also charge with 140 kW average for 10 min on a V3 supercharger with preconditioned battery. I have logs to prove it.
As for die i4 i am at least glad that BMW finally managed to bring it to the table. It will attract more buyers to the EV scene, that still believe service experience and sound proofing are most important. Yet for everyone else the Model 3 is leaps and bounds above this car and keeps improving.
