- The late, great Angela Lansbury received lots of awards in her eighty years in show business, but she never won a competitive Oscar. In this video, I break down Lansbury's astonishing career, discuss the reasons why the Oscar eluded her for so many decades, and give a loving tribute to one truly extraordinary artist. #angelalansbury #oscars #academyawards #brianrowevideo #elusiveoscar

Her not winning an Emmy is a war crime
Truly disgusting - there better be a full on tribute set next years ceremony…
Absolutely!!
I know it's shocking she never won an Emmy, especially considering how many nominations she had.
I agree!!!
Yes! I mean coudln't they bring themselves to give her at least one for Murder, She wrote. And that she didn't get an emmy for her marvelous performance as Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd is unforgivable. She put every fibre of her being into that role.
Ironically enough. I'd prefer a Angela Lansbury and the Elusive Emmy. I wish she won the Emmy over the Oscar. Now ain't that a statement. But she was nominated 18 times. EIGHTEEN. I find it insane for someone of her talents to be so negelected by an I dusty that benefitted from her
Agree!!
So true!! How did she never win??
I find it disgusting that she never won. There is no better actress, and she was a consummate Tonys host as well. Not one win?!
I would argue that an Honorary Oscar for acting is WAY more impressive than a competitive Oscar win! The former is in recognition of one's body of work over the years.
Yes, that’s a great point!
I’m glad that Dame Lansbury got her flowers while she was still with us. To me, she’ll always be Mrs Lovett and Mrs Potts. I get 🥹 when she sings beauty and the beast
Same here. Thanks for watching!
I recently watched the Manchurian Candidate and whilst I admire Patty Dukes work in The Miracle worker, for the one scene alone that Oscar was Lansbury's and I'm not over it.
I’ve seen both films, I wouldn’t say one was definitively better than the other (personally I preferred Duke’s). But the real reason Duke won was bc of her acting style. Lansbury was using the more traditional transatlantic style of old Hollywood whereas Duke was utilizing the method techniques of strasberg/new hollywood. It isn’t that one is superior to the other, it’s that Hollywood looked ahead and could see the direction film was going and it favored new wave/realism. It’s the same reason Anne Bancroft won over Bette Davis.
I would’ve preferred Lansbury winning that Oscar, too. A stunning performance!
I think it’s more than that, Rick.
I think it’s because “The Miracle Worker” is a virtue-signaling feel-good film and “The Manchurian Candidate” is raw, dreadful and horrifying, with her character the most evil of all.
That’s also part of why Davis lost for “…Baby Jane.” That movie told of the hideous side of fame and Hollywood - how well was that supposed to go over with the Academy voters?
@@rudypalma1250 I simply must disagree. If any film can be accused of virtue signaling it’s The Manchurian Candidate. It’s a not-so-subtle satire aimed straight at the heart of McCarthyism and the rise of red scare nationalism…but released 3-5 years too late to be considered provocative or courageous in any meaningful way.
I didn’t see the virtue signaling of The Miracle Worker (maybe you know something I don’t) but I don’t think the film’s as Academy friendly as you claim (especially not compared to The Manchurian candidate which has like 4 Academy Award winners/nominees). The miracle worker didn’t have an A list cast, it didn’t make a lot of money and lacked the technicolor production value the Academy sought out in the early 60’s (this was the same year Lawrence of Arabia won Best Picture). The Miracle Worker was counter culture and The Academy recognized the threat to their status quo.
You've never seen Murder, She Wrote?! 😲 Well, my friend, winter is coming and if you get snowed in, I suggest you head over to Peacock and get started! 👍
Just watched the pilot episode!! Excited to dig into the show!
That Joan Crawford crack was a good one lol
Haha thanks!
Seeing pictures of Lansbury as a young woman, I have a hard time understanding how it was decreed within the ranks of Hollywood she was not a beauty. She was absolutely lovely. But of course we all know she was made of sturdier stuff, and that was what truly prevailed through a decades long career. Lansbury was a solid pro who could walk onto any sound stage or theater set and deliver. And that was what the folks at the Academy ceremony were applauding when she got her Honorary Oscar. That, and the fact that she was a genuinely decent human being with a good heart.
She was beautiful!!
Yes she was a beautiful woman.
The reason she didn’t get an Oscar for Bedknobs and Broomsticks the way Julie Andrews did for Mary Poppins is because Angela Lansbury did not lose the role of Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady that same year. 😜 If anyone wants to see a glimpse of sheer genius and raw talent in a Broadway musical, here on RUclips search “Angela Lansbury in Gypsy.” There’s a montage of clips of musical numbers in that show. It ends with her singing the end of the finale of the show, Rose’s Turn. You can feel the pathos, pain, anger, and desperation in just a few seconds of that song. And that powerful singing voice! How I wish I could go back to 1974 and see her do the entire show live on Broadway. A3rd Tony Award well deserved.
Love this, thanks for sharing!
She was an amazing actress. Still crazy how she never won an Academy Award, but sometimes the greats never win an Oscar, such as Peter O’Toole and in some cases are never nominated such as Donald Southerland. Great video Brian, take care!
Thanks for watching, Jared!
Angela Lansbury should have definitely been nominated for Death on the Nile. The film is great and she is absolutely amazing in it, funny and memorable! Maggie Smith won this year and she is ok and her film is funny too, but she was not better than Lansbury. I think they gave her the Oscar for the weird thing to win an Oscar for playing an actor who doesn’t win an Oscar.
Gaslight is a great film and all performances were fantastic! She should have won for that at least.
Yes, agreed! Thanks for watching!
"PHILISTINE!!! I'LL SHOW YOU WHAT TRUE REPUTATIONS ARE BUILT UPON!!!!"
Can you make an elusive Oscar video about Sigourney Weaver
Yess!!
Excellent question.
Also - this year Sigourney has at least a couple movies that should get her one or two nominations, but I’m not seeing her in the conversations at all.
Best Actress - “The Good House”
Best Supporting Actress - “Call Jane”
She’s worthy for both.
The Actress category has many more worthy nominees this year, but definitely she should be considered for “Call Jane” - she has some solid scenes, a really excellent one, and is an anchor to the film along with star Elizabeth Banks.
Yep, that’s my next Elusive Oscar video! Coming your way in early December ❤️
I had no idea she had such a prolific film career. I mainly know her as a theatre legend
Thanks for watching!
She was definitely disappointed losing to Duke. In a interview she said she bought a new dress for it, and it wasn’t a great night, so there was an expectation of winning. I would’ve preferred a nomination for Death On The Nile too instead of Penelope Milford in Coming Home, but I don’t think it would’ve changed the end result with Maggie Smith winning. Glad she got a honorary one.
Yes, she would have been a great win for The Manchurian Candidate. Thanks for watching!
Wonderful video for such a talented actress.
I saw Angela Lansbury in London 2014 in "Blithe Spirit". It was amazing! She had incredible stage presence! Her character Madame Arcati is actually a supporting role - very important and a real crowd pleaser, but "only" a supporting role. And everybody in the audience were here to see HER (even it's a very funny play), but she fitted very smoothly in the excellent ensemble, not overshadowing her colleagues wirh her star power. She acted WITH them and did not degrade the rest of the ensemble. What a wonderful performance, I will never forget.
That’s fantastic! Thanks for sharing!
I have watched the original Gaslight (it’s in RUclips btw) and Lansbury was the one who was most improved from the original, at least in terms of memorability.
A fantastic debut!
I was so happy that she received an Honorary Oscar and lived ten more years than the usual recipients. Marlene Dietrich said that the Honorary Oscar is the deathbed Oscar they give to people before they die. Still, a consolation it is not. I was so sad when she passed away recently. I don't remember any aspect of entertainment she was not apart of.
I would have given it to her for The Manchurian Candidate. She really challenged public perception of her image doing that one, and who knew the film would be so controversial ahead of the Kennedy Assassination? Gaslight was an impressive debut. I haven't seen The Picture of Dorian Gray myself yet, but the Academy did respect legends through the Best Supporting actor categories. The Academy was still young and getting classically trained stage and screen legend Ethel Barrymore an Oscar was credibility chasing on the Academy's end to be legitimate, though Ethel did give an Oscar winning performance. Besides, Lionel already had a Best Actor Oscar to his name by then. Anne Revere was an amazing actor too. Character actors did get Best Supporting Oscars a lot.
Getting back to Manchurian, while the political tensions merited dramatic prowess, the Academy was just getting into the Method as it was growing in prominence. As Lansbury is classically trained, it's possible that their preferences were influenced by trends and actors whom they wanted to have full careers in Hollywood. By then, Angela had some clout from Broadway and Hollywood might have given her that nod to say "hey, we found you! Will you stop complaining if we give you a nod?"
With the Emmys, it is a crime against humanity that Angela never won one. Studio executives whom she had respective beefs with regarding ageism she experienced probably led to those snubs. The whole show's cancellation was Angela finally fighting back a la Bette Davis style.
I can go on and on about Angela. Every classic movie star that passes away who was born in the 20s just makes me miss my grandparents more.
Love your comment! Thanks for all your insight, and for watching!
you know, it was pretty bittersweet when she passed. like sad that she is no longer on the earth, but just like loretta lynn and betty white, passing in her sleep well into her 90s is such a wonderful way to go. however!! this video made me cry… darn you!! great work as always!!
Thank you so much!! Glad you enjoyed it!
Love, love Dame Lansbury! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thanks for watching!
Two words sum her up: Class Act !!
Loved the first Death on the Nile and YAY looking forward to Thelma Ritter video!!!!!!!!!!
Yay!! Thanks for watching!
She always said that director Cukor and star Bergman both treated her with respect and dignity - something she said meant so much to her in her fist film.
Love!
As a long time devotees of this incredible woman, it gladdens my heart to see this video and hear your lovely tribute to her at the end
Thank you, Angela, for decades of beautiful work and memories ❤️❤️❤️
Absolutely ❤️❤️❤️
Bedknobs & Broomsticks was my introduction to Lansbury as well. In 1980 the movie was on cable. Ms. Lansbury had said in an interview that she should have played the role older. You are correct in that she should have received an Oscar nomination. In the fall of 1980 my mom took me to see "The Mirror Crak'd" after an Oscar snub in '78 for another Agatha Christie adaptation were two more possible Oscar nominations! It is downright criminal that she never won an Emmy award especially for the episodes where she played Jessica's Cockney cousin were worthy! Another strike against her possibly for a win for "The Manchurian Candidate" was the fact that after Kennedy's assassination the movie was pulled from theaters by Sinatra and the studio. Making it more difficult for Academy voters to see.
Yes, all excellent points. Thanks for watching !
I'm finally getting to this video and I'm crying just as I knew I would 😭
I absolutely love Angela Lansbury. Growing up I loved the 'children's' movies she did and then getting into classic film I discovered just how long she's been around and saw her first and most acclaimed big-screen performances. Getting into musicals more also added to my love for her. But most significantly! a couple years ago the Hallmark movies & mysteries channel started playing Murder, She Wrote and I became obsessed. My mom and I set the episodes to record and we watched through most of the show together. Even if I wasn't home, I would still watch the episodes somehow and we would talk about them together. I was so shocked and sad when I saw news that she died, though she was 96 and that's a great, long life.
So true, I’m glad you enjoyed the video!
You should do one of these for Paul Thomas Anderson
YES
Hey Brian, I came back here just to make this comment LOL. Would you consider doing one of these about Ralph Fiennes? He is absolutely one of my favorite actors and it just occurred to me that he’s getting up there in age and may never win 😢
Great idea!
I find it so humiliating that she lost 12 Emmys in a row for MURDER, SHE WROTE (especially because she lost more than once to Tyne Daly, Sharon Gless, Dana Delany, Patricia Wettig and Kathy Baker).
I know!! What the hell!
During the first two seasons of the show i said whats hoing on why didnt she win its almost like the Golden girls winning one after the other.
I was refreshing since this morning. Thank you Brian for this. Greetings from Italy!
Yay, hope you enjoyed!
She should have won for Manchurian Candidate.
Agreed!!
what a beautiful tribute Brian, to a wonderful actress who had an extraordinary career.
My idol for life!!!
Yay!!
Brian you made me cry with this video and I want to say thank you!
You’re welcome, I’m glad you enjoyed it!
Oh, Brian, you go a great job with this series. Thank you so much!
Thanks for watching!
@ Pat That smile on the profile is really beautiful and captivating, I couldn’t help but comment… you are gorgeous
This was a lovely tribute to a lovely actress. Thanks, Brian!
Yay, I’m so happy you liked it! Means a lot!
WONDERFUL VIDEO!!! Tears in my eyes as I type this!
Thanks for watching!!
Back in 9th grade we were asked to write about the person we most admire...most people chose a parent, I chose Angela Lansbury. (I suppose that was my coming out story too, though I didn't know it at the time). To this day she is still one of my favorite performers. She brought so much joy to so many of her fans. So glad she finally got her recognition from the Academy.
It's hard to argue with Patty Duke -- but OMG that performance in "The Manchurian Candidate" is why Best Supporting Actress Oscar was born.
Wonderful video. I got a bit emotional at the end and probably so did you 🥲
Yes, I definitely did. Thanks for watching!
She was so wonderful. Teared up watching this and Matt Baums video
Thanks for watching, glad you liked it!
In talking about elusive Oscars, just quickly flash up a a photo of Toni Collette in Hereditary and all our blood pressures start to rise instantly !!!!
Haha, yup!!
I thought that one of the most glaring omissions from the Oscar’s Best Supporting Actress lineup in 1978 for her rollicking performance as Salome Otterbourne in Death On The Nile. I may have even given her the Oscar that year. I’ll have to go back and check the nominees that year. At least she won NBR for it.
I checked it out. She’d’ve been nominated against Maggie Smith for California Suite, Meryl Streep in The Deer Hunter and Maureen Stapleton for Interiors, so I don’t know. She definitely deserved the nomination though.
This series is so good. I don't know if you have but it would be interesting to see one on Adam Sandler, Ralph Fiennes, William Dafoe or Samuel L Jackson (I know he has an honouary Oscar but I'm shocked he never won a competitive Oscar).
All great ideas, thank you!
Also, Michelle Yeoh would be interesting to. A retrospective on her journey to what may be her first Oscar nom and win. Despite her amazing talent and decades long career.
Stay tuned! ❤️
I’m so glad you made a video on this incredible talent, but I agree with some other commenters that “The Elusive Emmy” would better characterize and more greatly interest me. I mean, 12 consecutive losses for such a hugely popular show?! Thanks for all you do in any case.
Thanks for watching! Angela Lansbury and the Elusive Emmy would’ve been a two hour video, lol!
@@TheAwardsContender I love long-form videos. We're into films, right? 😉
Great video, Brian! Lansbury's career, in some respects, is comparable to that of Glenn Close. I was surprised to learn recently that Jean Stapleton from "All in the Family" had turned down the Lansbury role in "Murder She Wrote."
Interesting! Thanks for watching!
Yes, Ms. Stapleton was not up for the work schedule for an hourlong series is the reason she passed on it!
She also graciously said later she did not think it was right for her and that she never could have brought what Angela brought to the role.
Stapleton was a hell of a lady, and I think she could have made quite a go of it had she tried.
@@rudypalma1250 Agree 100%!
She was so deserving in many ways, but what a career she had :-)
As an aside, for Alternative Oscars, I would be interested in your thoughts on best voice performances in Animation, both lead and supporting. Definitely Angela Lansbury would be derserving of nominations for both 'The Last Unicorn' and 'Beauty and the Beast'.
She acted circles around everyone in "The Manchurian Candidate" .She was truly a scary villain in that movie.
I remember her from the Death on the Nile. She was that author who writes erotic novels. Kind of a childhood nightmare figure. She was really good in that movie.
Thanks for watching!
How did you forget her voice in Anastasia 🥴😊
Her performance in Manchurian was bested by Patty Duke in The Miracle: if not for her, shed’ve won that year, almost certainly. I’m pretty sure that Duke could have been placed alongside Bancroft in Lead Actress, as the screen time is certainly there, but you know what the Academy likes to do for child actors.
Thanks for watching!
Love the video! If ur looking for suggestions I think johnny deep, taraji p henson, and scarlett johansson would be great.
All great picks, thank you!
If only her performance for Manchurian candidate came out another year she would have won. But patty duke in miracle worker is perhaps the best win in this category of all time!
Love the Joan Crawford joke!
An "Steven Segal and the Elusive Oscar" would be great.
Ha
Love these videos! Can you please consider a video of "Caleb Deschanel and the Elusive Oscar"? It maddens me that he still hasn't won for his STUNNING work.
Great idea, thanks!
You gotta see Murder she wrote my grandma and I loved it
🎉🎉🎉
She was a good looking woman when she was young(er)!
Though I disagree, I can comprehend Oscar bypassing Ms. Lansbury. But overlooking her talent 18 times is a blemish that reflects very poorly on the television academy. It's fucking ridiculous. Same as the recording academy never honoring Diana Ross with a competitive Grammy. Inexplicable.
So true. Thanks for watching!
@@TheAwardsContender Thank you. Your videos are incredibly engaging and enjoyable. Keep up the great work! I'm a fan...
By the way, Charles Boyer's name is pronounced without the final r...
❤🌸🌸🌸🌸
❤️❤️❤️
An over-talented beauty. R.I.P.
Thanks for watching!
Angela was brilliant but Patty Duke deserved it the scene at the water pump nailed it for Duke and Bancroft everytime I see this scene I get emotional it never gets dated or old for me
Very true. Thanks for watching!
If only "The Manchurian Candidate" had been made the following year in 1963! I have no doubt she could have won over Dame Margaret Rutherford.
How have you never seen Murder She Wrote? ;)
Haha, I need to get into it! Wish it was on Hulu!
Im more curious whybshe didnt win an emmy shexhad 12 chances shes like Susan Lucci with the daytime emmy
Yes, it’s crazy she never won an Emmy!
GASLIGHT isn't half as good as the original British version which came out four years earlier. On a vastly smaller budget with two great actors who weren't big stars (Anton Walbrook and Diana Wynyard) it blows the Cukor version out of the water.
Forget the Oscar! How on Earth did Angela never win an Emmy for Murder, She Wrote?!
Even when Angela was young, she kind of looked old.
You forgot to say the word "Barber" in the title of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.
Angela.turned down the role of the evil nurse in Cuckoos Nest she would have the Oscar that year considering the weak lineup that year in that category and the fact that she was overdue Colleen Dewhurst also turned down the part either one of them would have been amazing Louise Fletcher was great but not in the same league as these ladies
Would’ve been amazing!
