  • Perched high above the Conwy Valley, this ancient holy place has an unrivalled ability to touch the soul. Its rugged simplicity and sweeping views make it a favourite stop on the Pilgrim’s Way to Bardsey Island and part of many other local walks.
In the corner of the walled churchyard is a well associated with 6th century Saint Celynnin, after whom this church is named. Its waters were reputed to have power to heal children. Today it shelters a colony of newts.
The present church dates mostly from the 12th century. The Capel Dynion (Men’s Chapel) to one side provided for Drovers: rough and ready Welsh cowboys moving herds of black cattle and geese past Llangelynnin as they crossed the mountains on the way to markets as far away as London. Mounds near the entrance to the churchyard were once an Inn and a cock fighting pit so perhaps keeping them quiet in church was a challenge!
You can see the remains of a rood screen and panelled ceiling.
On the wall is a wooden bier, used to carry coffins by hand across the hills for funerals. Notice the Ten Commandments and Lord’s Prayer in Welsh painted on the east wall.
In the 19th century a less remote parish church was built in Rowen. However, that closed in the 1980s (and the stone font from it was carried up the hill to here). Llangelynnin Old Church carried on regardless and is still used for regular worship.
It attracts large and diverse congregations of walkers and pilgrims at dawn on Easter morning and then for a service once a month until October. There are also weddings and baptisms in this unique setting, even recently the ordination of a new priest.

It was like an old postcard come to life when you opened the gate! Wow!! Welsh slate is a good choice for headstones, as well as the floor inside the old church. This was a real treat, thank you. Deb of Oz.

In the 1960's there were regular visitors via a path from the coastal town of Penmaenmawr and it was well signposted for visitors, off this same path but closer to Penmaenmawr the was another signposted path to the Druid's Circle above Penmaenmawr by Graiglwyd, which in stoneage times was the source of much prized granite stone axe heads. The Druid's Circle was never used by Druids and predates them by many centuries. There is road access to Llangelynin Old Church with a car park, in the 60's the hillside facing the car park was known as Daffodil Mountain as at this time of year was covered in daffodils, I haven't visited at this time of year, so I don't know if this is still the case. Nice video, lovely location, and yes I did walk both paths in the 60's to both locations with family and friends, it was magical.

In the US some enclosed cemeteries use sheep and goats to keep the grass and brambles down. It's cheaper than a mowing crew and better for the peace and quiet of the sites.

So interesting how the ground is 'pillowing' up in the grave spaces. Wonder what caused that? Also I heard areas of N. Wales, Ireland and Scotland were actually deeply forested, but that the trees were all cut down over the years. Is that true?
Editing- In the church there are signs of flooding on walls and wood panels - It reminds me of some places years after Katrina, what the flood marks look like. I wonder if they didn't pile stones on the coffins then cover with dirt to prevent them floating up when the water table rises or flood occurs?
Also that large box at 4:54, could that be the old 'poor box' from which Boxing Day get's it's name?
The face at 8:35 is probably a soul effigy with it's wings worn off.

Prior to human intervention in the landscape, most of England, Scotland and Wales were thickly forested, valleys particularly.

I am a little confused by these mounds you spoke of. They seem to be very old, but if there were bodies underneath, there would be no mounds anymore, because, depending on the ground type, the bodies decompose sooner or later, and even the bones disappear. After some 20 years nothing more than a small package is left from a corpse, and the earth on the surface subsides eventually. The note on the door says: This is a house of God, but my, it's in a sad condition. Who would scribble on a wall like these ones anyway? Is there really no money to care for the little chapel? Did you go back to write your visit into the book?
