People that are saying he has only got speed here are right but as the commentator said he's only just started playing rugby, just give him awhile to learn to tackle and the other things he is lacking in and he could be quite good, not that I really care seeing as I'm not american but I just wanna see good players and I think this guy could be really good if he keeps at it.
Jarrod Watson fair comment, but let’s remember this is 7s where there is so much space where he can use his speed. Normal 15s game he’s going to find it so much harder.
i wonder if isles ever got the opportunity to play nfl because if he did and he chose 7's instead then he deserves so much more respect. He's developing alot as a rugby player. he's the man
"At last year’s NFL scouting combine - in which college football players undergo a series of physical and mental tests - Isles set the fastest time out of anyone: 4.22 seconds." - From an article published a year or two ago - He's got the speed, but I don't think he was offered a spot. Either way, it's great he's developing so many aspects of his physicality, as required by rugby over NFL.
I feel like if this guy impresses you you'd be in absolute awe at Jonah Lomu. Not only was he quick but he was huge as well and even stronger than he looked. Sometimes as many as 4 guys couldn't stop him getting over the line
This guy has incredible potential. That is coming from someone who's entire life revolves around rugby league, with a little practice he could become a legend.
so what if he cant tackle,he can learn that..he has pretty strong shoulders and he is strong but this pace man..you cant learn that!!!nobody cant learn that,he is outstanding!nice work Carlin, stay strong, stay focus..God obviouslly blessed you! :)
Not taking anything away from the England player but he really didn't get destroyed, momentum alone caused most of it. The English player still did make him look like a fool.
Corey King Momentum alone caused it? The player had to choose to engage and actually made a very quick judgement that Isles had already chosen to turn and chase, he saw it and took advantage of the poor defensive stance and easily knocked him down. It wasnt momentum alone it was also great decision making by one player v poor decision making by the other.
The problem with natural speed is that it generally disabuses a sportsman of the notion that he needs to work on a hundred other aspects of any given sport. The fact that they are so fast is often a detriment in terms of developing an all-round game.
Furlog Giant They didn't release him, he quit because he'll make maybe 5x's the $ at rugby than the new NFL rookie 4yr deals (he also ran the fastest 40yard time at the 2013 combines, hand timed at 4.22) I think he'll probably have a longer career at rugby than the NFL.
Isles is fast as all holy hell but he's a crap rugby player. Can't wait to see how he develops at Glasgow. Hopefully he'll learn to tackle/catch/kick/play rugby and we can see how he comes along.
+Tim Locus So you're telling me, a world class athlete with months of top level intensive training is a better rugby player than me? Oh heavens! Whatever will I do!? He's faster than anything in professional rugby but he can't get his head on the correct side of a tackle and he's still a rotten passer. My point stands. He's signed for Glasgow Warriors and I hope he learns quickly but sadly, being better than me (not played rugby for 4 years) doesn't make him a rugby union star. I do hope he does well though, it will be great to see a Scottish club side have an exciting player like him.
idk if you watched the most recent USA sevens, I think it was most recent anyway. He's actually learned when he should deal the ball, he isn't just pure speed. he's actually developing, so that's good to see. but he is a shit tackler, and from what I know of rugby, which isn't much. being a poor tackler isn't that huge of a deal considering he's a winger (I think that's what its called lol) but im definitely interested to see how he'll develop in Detroit. I personally don't think he'll be any good in the NFL but there might be an occasional flash from him on the field. yet I doubt that he can make it without proper training. there's too much info in football to be just a pure athlete. that might just be my ignorance talking. but from what ive seen rugby has a heavier reliance on pure athleticism than football which relies more on intelligence paired with athleticism. it seems to me that the athletes in rugby are far more athletic than those in the NFL. granted ive never played rugby so idk what its like to play, idk if there are set plays or anything like that. but that's the impression I get as a former football player and someone who just recently began trying to follow rugby.
Mason Lowry He also grew up playing football and had a football and track scholarship in college. That aside I think we can all agree, his defense is suspect as proven by the video.
A lot of wingers, especially international players are used to the idea of letting a player past them and then making the tackle from behind. It doesn't work against an exceptionally quick opponent ... but they really struggle to adapt their strategy.
For me, he'd be well served working under some NZ coaches to improve his overall skills and reading of the game - let's be honest, nobody tops NZ overall in terms of rugby skill and intelligence. Combine that with his pace, and he'll be difficult to stop.
He is a track Athlete only good in 7s because of open space but not in rugby 15s where the real speeds star are rated in speeds, power , balance, strength and how they can burst through the defenders. Rupeni Caucau and Jonah Lomu hands down all the wingers ever Grace the rugby field.
The next rugby game they make on PS3/4 XBOX etc. Bryan Habanas skill attributes will have his speed at 90 out 100. Carlin Isles speed will be at 150 out 100. Dang!
+ephesus its 7 on 7, Carlin is classed as a winger which is the fastest players on the field from each team. If you get tackled you have to release the ball, preferably on your teams side. where ever the tackle is made, an imaginary line is created which the defensive (team without the ball) can not cross until the other team plays the ball. That's pretty much the nutshell. this is normally played with 15 players, 7's designed to be quick games.
Gavin Lutali LOL...what???? Dan Carter is pretty big for a First Five, which is a position where size isn't important. Colin Slade, Aaron Cruden and Beauden Barrett are all smaller than Dan Carter and they're his understudies.
a fact is he played high school football in ohio. he played for a team known as the Jackson polar bears he was goodhe worked on his speed now he unleashed the beast look at his speed
Carlin isles is a good runner at 7s but that is it. but to be fair, he hasnt grown up playing the game and he doesnt have the size or attitude to impose himself on the field given his size. he could make a career out of 7s tho and good on him
I'm gonna be honest i didnt see this guys potential as every tournament his defensive game just got worse it seemed he didnt want to improve and the whole fastest man in rugby got to his head and thought that would pull him through the sport . Now if u wanna look at an american player who is very good just check out perry baker he is class. p.s for all youse saying carlin was gonna rip the sport where is he now no one gives a crap i think the USA team has more to offer than this player
To people sayings he won't make it ect remember it takes time to learn and build the confidence to be physical. many people said Christian Wade and Shane Williams would not make it because they were to small ect ect. (O.o) and we all know how that turned out
15 man squad might be different not much room to move ....he's defense is not great ....look at rieko from new Zealand he started off from 7s and nose all blacks ....that's talent and skills
speed alone wont get u far in 15's u need to be able to fend or bump off players savea ranger would murder this guy yhose are two of the best wingers in world rugby
not comparing identifying a lack od skill set that would make him a better player.. Ive played in teams where we have taken players from track and field on the wings and made them practice tackling and fending bumping off tacklers all day until they got better one was Tonderei chavangah Prince Edward school tigers Zimbabwe. Birhane Freyer Yes but Chavangah has been playing rugby for how many years now? It's unfair to compare unless Isles has played for a similar amount of time. And yes you are comparing. You said they would murder him. What other conclusion is there?
fine listen im not going to argue with someone who has clearly taken over something that probably has no impact in their life.but a fact is that if this fella tries to play 15's where there hardly is ever any space to simply out run your opponent without having trained and played the game in a more competitive environment yes he will get murdered it is so easy to defend. that is a simple fact. another Fact Jona Lomu never scored a try against the boks neither has Savea yet.
Birhane Freyer Of course it doesn't impact my life. Why the hell did you just say that? All I was doing was pointing out flaws in your comment. Is that a crime now? Well yes, you don't have much space in 15s but what of it? More training will get him used to exploiting tighter spaces. Look at Lemi. He was the same size as Isles and scored many tries. Isles could do the same.
There's the difference between Rugby League/Union and Gridiron right there. In League/Union you cannot be a one dimensional player. Ewen McGrady from the Doggies springs to mind. Dally M Player of the year, back playing bush footy within 12 months. Brilliant in attack - till they realised he couldn't tackle Gridiron is perfect for the one dimensional player in that they can play an Offensive role and never have to make a tackle in an entire career. Plus, come on - it was 7's - no one takes that seriously. Its Rugby's version of Home Run derby's and crickets 20/20.
Offensive players have to be multi-dimensional as well as each position requires a lot from a player. A running back has to know how to block, run routes, catch, run inside, run outside, pass and tackle(for special teams plays)
+occiBK31 You are in denial my friend. On all levels the contact in professional football is greater. Its just using plain logic putting two and two together....think of this for a second its like a man hitting you with brass knuckles vs him punching you with his bare fist. Yeah he's gonna damage with both but at the end of the day you know which ones doing the most damage.
1 year in rugby. Give him a break.
that's what 10.13 seconds looks like... conversely it's also what 75kg looks like
Fsdf Nog you need to watch some Jonah Lomu vidz...6ft5in tall 270pounds 100metres 10.88 what a monstrosity he was...Rest easy Jonah
And that year his season best was 10.4 imagine what a sub 10 would look like...
:)
then why the fuck is he on the national team?
Jarrod Watson fair comment, but let’s remember this is 7s where there is so much space where he can use his speed. Normal 15s game he’s going to find it so much harder.
You don't "learn" to tackle in rugby. Tackling in rugby is a matter of willpower, mind over matter. He will never be anything in rugby.
Perry Baker became everything USA 🇺🇸 was hoping Carlin Isles would become.
i wonder if isles ever got the opportunity to play nfl because if he did and he chose 7's instead then he deserves so much more respect.
Apple Cider agreed. Thanks for the article quote too :]
Captainamerica95 I think I read that the Detroit Lions was looking to recruit him. Then he signed to Glasgow instead.
Iain G He's only 5' 8" so maybe that was an issue for the NFL scouts?
***** Much less so for a winger.
I feel like if this guy impresses you you'd be in absolute awe at Jonah Lomu. Not only was he quick but he was huge as well and even stronger than he looked. Sometimes as many as 4 guys couldn't stop him getting over the line
Speed with no ABS is dangerous so as speed with out defense ...you need both that's what makes a rugby player complete...
Word!
Golden Chadez agreed, he’d have been better as a receiver in American football where you don’t have to worry about tackling
Golden Chadez Why speed without abs is dangerous????
Im super fast but i dont have abs
Every human has abs,if you mean core strength, there isnt a pro player on earth without great core strength.
This guy has incredible potential. That is coming from someone who's entire life revolves around rugby league, with a little practice he could become a legend.
It’s one thing to be fast but he also understands the mechanics of the in-and-away, which is impressive.
so what if he cant tackle,he can learn that..he has pretty strong shoulders and he is strong but this pace man..you cant learn that!!!nobody cant learn that,he is outstanding!nice work Carlin, stay strong, stay focus..God obviouslly blessed you! :)
everything will be fine we are all humans he isn’t that bad but he just gets bumped off every now and than
Soon to be ripping up the pitch at Glasgow Warriors :0)
Not taking anything away from the England player but he really didn't get destroyed, momentum alone caused most of it. The English player still did make him look like a fool.
Carlin Isles is a bit light weight even by 7's standard but I am sure that will change. Anyway, run through him if u can't run around him.
he did not get destroyed but he definetly got smashed
Corey King Momentum alone caused it? The player had to choose to engage and actually made a very quick judgement that Isles had already chosen to turn and chase, he saw it and took advantage of the poor defensive stance and easily knocked him down. It wasnt momentum alone it was also great decision making by one player v poor decision making by the other.
It's just a phrase really
Nah he sent to another universe, but thats ok every player in the game has their talents and levels it out doesnt it,well he got levelled out
Wow, he’s incredibly talented, but all creds to that England player for just smashing him
The Cincinnati Ohio Bengals need him as a punt retuner that would help their game for sure
The problem with natural speed is that it generally disabuses a sportsman of the notion that he needs to work on a hundred other aspects of any given sport. The fact that they are so fast is often a detriment in terms of developing an all-round game.
Exceptional speed.
I don't think you can ask for more pure, natural talent from an athlete. I hope he makes a huge impact for the Lions next year in the NFL.
LOL. Nice joke. The brother actually wants to be in the RWC for 2015.
#1...Detroit only signed him for their practice squad 2013, he was never going to play in an actual game
#2...They released him 2014
Furlog Giant
They didn't release him, he quit because he'll make maybe 5x's the $ at rugby than the new NFL rookie 4yr deals (he also ran the fastest 40yard time at the 2013 combines, hand timed at 4.22) I think he'll probably have a longer career at rugby than the NFL.
Barack Smith >>>he'll probably have a longer career at rugby than the NFL
Furlog Giant LOL... Thats cause in football they retire early.
"There he goes... he's gone."
Your the reason I started rugby
the cheetah, soooo fast, but cant take on the big boys, just like the animal itselve, great to watch though, wish he was back in eagles
The greatest Karl Kassulke ,Superbowl IV impression 2:14
Personally, im looking forward to seeing him at the world cup this year at the Amex V Somoa. Power V speed, should be epic!
when he runs were like oh damn but when he gets smacked were like hahahaha
Damn I'd like to see this guy in the NFL
rugby players are such optimal athletes , god damn i need to watch more rugby
Isles is fast as all holy hell but he's a crap rugby player. Can't wait to see how he develops at Glasgow. Hopefully he'll learn to tackle/catch/kick/play rugby and we can see how he comes along.
fair enough...He is only 5'8" 165 lbs. (profile) so I don't expect him to be a great solo tackler. Just slow them until help arrives.
He's better than you'll ever be
+Tim Locus So you're telling me, a world class athlete with months of top level intensive training is a better rugby player than me? Oh heavens! Whatever will I do!?
He's faster than anything in professional rugby but he can't get his head on the correct side of a tackle and he's still a rotten passer. My point stands. With his NFL upbringing and sprinting I guess football players only learn one or two traits.
In his case it is just running.
what a real man. decides to do rugby instead of american football of football
That was a beautiful hit Turner laid on Isles. He just leveled him.
Worlds best player and the most exciting. Great stuff.
+Ink Black *facepalm*
+Ink Black lol yeah maybe he should learn to tackle first
that might help
+Firsthgyhgyhuy Lastujhujhuj nah just play rugby
Carlin Isles was thinking, where is my Helmut & shoulder pads?
Actually he grew up doing track and you don't wear pads running track. He was a sprinter and that's why he's so fast
Mason Lowry He also grew up playing football and had a football and track scholarship in college. That aside I think we can all agree, his defense is suspect as proven by the video.
As an American who hasn't been exposed to this sport I have to say. This shit is dope!!!!!
A lot of wingers, especially international players are used to the idea of letting a player past them and then making the tackle from behind. It doesn't work against an exceptionally quick opponent ... but they really struggle to adapt their strategy.

gotta love these comments..
Offensive = QUICK
Defensive = just tail the guy
The next rugby game they make on PS3/4 XBOX etc. Bryan Habanas skill attributes will have his speed at 90 out 100. Carlin Isles speed will be at 150 out 100. Dang!
He's great! But imagine that was somone like Mau Nonu at 1:04 ... ouch.
The title doesnt do him justice mayne especially given he made the comeback with that second try
I have no idea what the rules are, but damn he's fast.
That's pretty much the nutshell.
this is normally played with 15 players, 7's designed to be quick games.
his head was on the wrong side in the tackle
If I ever were to play a sport I'd wanna play rugby. Seems to be brutal.
love that pace
Couldn't make it to the NFL.
Why isn't Isles in the US starting team?
1:04
THAT'S why.
That was sheer lack of experience, most amateurs who have played for years wouldn't get bounced that badly.
nakotohs97
It's sheer lack of size.
He's just too small and physically weak to be anything but a one-trick pony.
SD78 that's what they said about Dan Carter playing for the all blacks, look at him now.
Gavin Lutali
LOL...what????
Dan Carter is pretty big for a First Five, which is a position where size isn't important.
Colin Slade, Aaron Cruden and Beauden Barrett are all smaller than Dan Carter and they're his understudies.
SD78 I feel so stupid, I meant Colin Slade , compare their height and weight, and you'll see Colin is just a bit taller and around the same weight.
In the NFL, he could only play as a slot receiver who average 5'10 and 180 lbs.
he got all that speed but he can't tackle
Haha He was like you can run around me but I'm gonna run through you mate :).
0:09 turbo kicks in?
Without him there will be no point for eagles
his literally the only reason they're good. It's like that fat kid you always pass to in high school because no one can take him down.
Sweet tackle Carlin
a fact is he played high school football in ohio. he played for a team known as the Jackson polar bears he was goodhe worked on his speed now he unleashed the beast look at his speed
my jaw droped to the floor when isles got body
keon williams why? He's one of the smallest guys in the whole game.
hes the flash
wouldnt last a second in 15's imagine what a full sized second row or number 8 would do to him, he wouldnt live for one game
the English player is a full size second row possibly even a prop you dickhead, do you know jack shit about rugby?🤣
So basically He’s a glass cannon
Good old Glasgow Warrior!
He eats a motorcycle.
if deion sanders played rugby
Rugby player vs. a sprinter.
Is this 7’s, union or league
He can win for teams
Hi im a winger,catch me
Hi im a forward,be lucky to remember me
Man got dropped
surely that push by williams was illegal? any1 know?
why would it be illegal? its not
Carlin isles is a good runner at 7s but that is it. but to be fair, he hasnt grown up playing the game and he doesnt have the size or attitude to impose himself on the field given his size. he could make a career out of 7s tho and good on him
Hes fast but thats pretty much it
be funny if he thought it was nfl and didnt touch the ball on the grass
Runs fast but pushed over like a wee girl
I don't know why carlin isles reminds me of Kevin hart in this video
I'm gonna be honest i didnt see this guys potential as every tournament his defensive game just got worse it seemed he didnt want to improve and the whole fastest man in rugby got to his head and thought that would pull him through the sport . Now if u wanna look at an american player who is very good just check out perry baker he is class.
p.s for all youse saying carlin was gonna rip the sport where is he now no one gives a crap i think the USA team has more to offer than this player
Carlin Isles v Jonah Lomu would be a laugh
🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂
NICEEEE tackle!!!
Lol
Boomfa
To people sayings he won't make it ect remember it takes time to learn and build the confidence to be physical. many people said Christian Wade and Shane Williams would not make it because they were to small ect ect. (O.o) and we all know how that turned out
that was just poor tackling technique from isles, his head was in front of the player instead of behind
Just...no...that's poor tackling technique. If you tackle like that you're going to end up with a head/neck injury
lol poor isles
15 man squad might be different not much room to move ....he's defense is not great ....look at rieko from new Zealand he started off from 7s and nose all blacks ....that's talent and skills
Who is faster usain bolt or him
Bolt... The fastest man in the world...
over 1st 20 meters carlin is fastest in the world
He is 40th in the US, number 1 in the US is slower than Bolt
that is a bit of a stupid question to ask pal
Over 100 metres, usain bolt by far, over 30 metres, isles is 0.22 seconds faster.
speed alone wont get u far in 15's u need to be able to fend or bump off players savea ranger would murder this guy yhose are two of the best wingers in world rugby
Why would you compare players of that calibre to Isles anyway?
not comparing identifying a lack od skill set that would make him a better player.. Ive played in teams where we have taken players from track and field on the wings and made them practice tackling and fending bumping off tacklers all day until they got better one was Tonderei chavangah Prince Edward school tigers Zimbabwe. Change ur name
rugby à 7 so easy for him tu run like that
Destroys england?? Before he scored the try the score was 26-7. Also he needs to learn how to tackle:)
Shane Williams of Wales was just as quick and that was playing full rugby 15's. not 7's.
Sebastian Christopher Jonah Lomu
Why not just kick it and let him run past everyone and get it?
There's the difference between Rugby League/Union and Gridiron right there. In League/Union you cannot be a one dimensional player. Is he wearing shoulder pads?
what do you expect, from people that came up with a super protected sport like US football lol
+occiBK31 but our hits are harder than yours....
Only because of the armour id say
Kenneth Denson Arguable... In Rugby union or seven possibly, not sure that football has harder hits than Rugby league though.
+occiBK31 You are in denial my friend. On all levels the contact in professional football is greater. Isles had No Strength for that
1:03 when black people say white people cant boll over others in rugby aha
Cant tackle though
the only thing he can do is run
To you make point, you have to run
America is ruining British sports
He's got nothing on Johna lomu
Bastardised rugby.
1.05. He intentionally ran into the black dude...He was running right than he turn way left just to push him...Wow
Let him come and play in wales 15 a side week after week he wouldn't last five
Minutes
USA has the best Rugby Team in the world right now.
You mean 7s right?
Only in 7s,
He'd get destroyed in Union
Only in 7s,
He'd get destroyed in Union
Only in 7s,
He'd get destroyed in Union
+Tyrell Williams no its not that is stupid
Stuart Hogg is faster!
Nope
he's weak all he has is speed julian savea will crush him
Ok, stop bitching
Who cares if he's weak if he can't be caught? He rigged the game by being a fast black guy in a slow white guy sport.
yeah he'd get flattened
Slow white guy sport? lol Fiji are #1 at 7s
+eric kosecki Right lol
