What you missed is a small resistor between the base of diodes to flexible wire output. This will keep the diode from seeing a direct short when welding or crossing wires of battery charger.

YOU are placing a resistor in parallel with the diode When you have a short circuit (when you weld the electrode to the metal ground ) you are saving the diode from getting damaged. This is because the resistor in the circuit is used to give the electric ( JUICE ) something to do which is resist and produce heat. The diode does not see the short circuit that is right in line with itself. This is the simplest explanation I can give you. Hope it helps ELSON.
I prefer AC and with my custom welder giving me a very stable arc, there's no need for me to make it DC. I don't ever get an aggressive sounding arc that is music to my ears on DC. Besides, I don't want to take chances with arc blow.
