i read a poem recently that i really loved talking about bugs and why we shouldn't kill them, i wont post the whole poem but it ends with:
"if i am ever caught in the wrong place at the wrong time, just being alive and not bothering anyone, i hope i am greeted with the same kind of mercy"

When I was a kid, probably 7 or 8, I found a bunch of what I THOUGHT were butterfly cocoons, I had never seen one before and butterflies were the only insects I knew of at the time that came out of cocoons. I ended up bringing probably a dozen of these "cocoons" into my bedroom, my child brain thought was: they'll grow in their cocoons and I'll come home one day and my room will be full of butterflies and then ill open the windows and let them go and it will be sooo cool. Well turns out they weren't butterflies, they were praying mantis, and my mom came into my room to wake me up for school one morning and found them ALLLLL hatched and all over the place. I still think it was kinda cool, but definitely a lesson learned. Now I'm just imagining what her reaction would've been had they been cockroaches.

@@benadrylgelllzzz5724 it was cool, but there were ALOT of them lol, the eggs or "ootheca" as I learned they were called are actually egg CASES, so they aren't 1 to 1 as far as how many mantises come out of each case, idk how many eggs are in each case but there were probably hundreds of teeny tiny babies in my bedroom and we kept finding dead ones many months later after we thought we scooped them all up and brought them outside

Watching Maya’s content has genuinely helped me with bugs. I used to be very afraid to the point of not wanting to even get close enough to one with a fly swatter. After watching a lot of Maya’s content about them and seeing how she handles them, I was able to calmly coax a spider onto a piece of paper and let it outside without even having anxiety. They really are just misunderstood ❤

As a kid, I was obsessed with bugs. I’ve had pet beetles, butterflies, ants, praying mantises, ladybugs, cockroaches, and that’s not counting the ones I befriended in the garden. The worst thing about that was that other kids found it funny to threaten to step on bugs in front of me, bringing me to literal tears. (I cried over a bee getting killed in 9th grade. This wasn’t just an elementary school thing.) Love what you’re doing, showing these lil guys in a positive light. I hope it brings people to realize how important insects are and why we should treat them with respect.

I used to have a neutral-negative relationship with insects until I took an entomology course in college where we had to make an insect collection. Through the process of making my collection my opinion of insects, arachnids and other bugs has 100% flipped. They do so much for the environment, their bodies are fascinating and exquisitely constructed, and they have such a range of beautiful colors. It's true with pretty much anything but the more I learned about insects and arachnids, the less I feared and disliked them.
What Maya and Alveus does with their bugs and animal ambassadors is so very important. Interacting with the animals in a respectful and non-fearful way while letting people know more about them is so so important to changing perceptions about uncharismatic creatures like the roaches. Thank you for all y'all do at Alveus!

Not difficult at all. Just get yourself a big tub and fill it with egg crate. I even leave the lid open for some days and never had escapies because they can't climb smooth surfaces. I feed them scraps and a fresh piece of fruit every week. Started with 10 males and 25 females, now I have a colony of them in the hundreds. There are some good tutorials on youtube that explain how to set up a breeding tub and it's honestly worth the money. I haven't bought feeder insects online for years now@@michelleb2722

My first ever interaction with a real life cockroach was with a preserved dead one in high school biology, and I remember being mesmerized by its eyes. I just thought they were so pretty for some reason

I can honestly say, watching your bug- and spider-related content has helped me not make such a big deal about them. When I used to kill them, now I just catch them and carry them outside. I still don't like them, and don't want them on me or close to me, but I realize they don't do it on purpose, and are just trying to live their lives / follow their instincts.

Ever since watching your streams and youtube videos I have been so much more consious of how I deal with insects and spiders. Even at work I've taken spiders out to our plants to release them versus just killing them. Thanks for everything that you do! It has helped me lead a much more compassionate life!

I love you Maya and your energy. I love bugs too and think we all need to love em back more. What is your tolerance for house flies and gnats? I love the advice on keep your space clean since it's good for the brain and keeps the bugs away! Please keep making more fun quirky videos like this. I adore you, QT, Wine about it, Fear and, and all you do. We need more hoomanz like you in the space truly. I never comment on anyone's video despite watching all your comment (It takes a love of bugs for this Doug!). Fr though thank you. Our space needs more people like you.

Today at work I saw two large spiders... old me would have killed them with fire... new me picked them up and put them outside. Yay progress! Might not be ready to handle a cockroach but Maya is changing minds!

I am afraid of bugs, but more of them getting into places i dont want them to be, but living in the countryside really helped me deal with my fear, like i can observe the bugs outside and see how they react etc
