    I think that Sea Power is the ultimate game there is...
    An idea I have had for longer is something that comes to one's mind when you cross the TV Shows: The Last Ship, The Last Resort, and most importantly the Patrolboat from Australia. So I would like to have some sort of PVE/PVP MMORPG where you can pick a navy in today's time and have an officer commanding a ship, engaging in smaller engagements against enemy ships. You would start as a low level Patrolboat officer, working yourself up to CVN/CGN. Submarines would be welcome, but the bulk of the game shall be focused on surface vessels, those are being circumnavigated a lot in favour of subs in a lot of games. But you would also use your resources and gadgets, meaning all your ship has to offer. Taking land parties to capture island radar stations and alike like we see in the Last Resort show, commandeering in piracy engaged small fisher boats like in the Patrolboat series, support ground units in engagements against imaginary pirates and terrorists like in the Last Ship, using all sorts of weapons, from deck guns, torpedoes, missiles to all manner of special equipment, that could also be found or earned. Well, that is kind of my dream game... I don't actually understand why no one has yet made something like this. I see that the biggest problem might be to find a realistic way how to keep gameplay arches for such different ships. There is a lot of difference between a small patrol boat and an Aircraft carrier. But all the ships fill different roles in their navies, and it should be possible to come up with realistic tasks for their captains in one game.

  • @maxlee1423
    @maxlee1423 Год назад +50

    Btw Regarding Rule the Waves 3 (Based on Rule the Waves 2), if you guys have been Stealth's videos, the design and combat is effectively the same as Ultimate Admiral Dreadnoughts but simpler. In ship design you are working from the opposite direction, instead of picking parts like weapons and engines and placing them, you select what you want the ship to be like in menus and then the game figures out what it would take based on your technology. Thus if you want a ship of 22 knots speed you select the speed not the engines used. If you want 4 turrets you select that in a window instead of placing them down. If you want 22 Secondary guns you select the gun size and the amount in a drop down and they appear on the ship. Its actually simpler than UAD as it does not tell you about all the details of how the armour scheme is laid out or the shape of the hull.
    Combat is almost the same but simplified, You have regions of the world that your ships can be placed into, depending on hidden dice rolls, portions of the fleet will discover and fight part of the enemy fleet in engagements you control. However because of the simple 2d graphics you don't have issues with pathfinding between ships and the map scales from ships fighting at a few kilometers away to aircraft carriers launching aircraft 100s of kilometers away seamlessly. It works much better than UAD but is the same in concept.
    However it has completely differently issues. For example missions can be very repetitive as the game might generate a mission to attack the exact same location on the map a dozen times. Missions can be extremely unfair, such as trying to defeat an enemy invasion force coming for your territory, that is somehow able to sail at night, under hurricane conditions and land troops safely, while you are unable to see the enemy ships to shoot them due to said hurricane and nightfall. The game also allows ships to sail close to the shore. But ships have minimal terrain AI, thus if they same next to land they will get stuck on peninsulas and rivers and drive around in circles.

      Very detailed write-up. Thanks!

    • @5647mhjgt
      @5647mhjgt Год назад +11

      Simplification is what saves RtW from many UAD's problems and makes it generally less frustrating game to play so that's a good thing, I think.
      AI can't build completely unbalanced ship if ship designer auto-balances it by default. I.e. AI has ships that aren't total garbage not occasionally, but almost always.
      You can manage large fleet battles better because looking from above at symbolic representations of ships gives you better idea about what's happening in the whole battle at a glance, your squadrons can be hundreds of miles apart and still be perfectly manageable.
      Ships will auto-dodge torps because you are a head of admiralty\admiral and personally babysitting every slight rudder shift for every single ship in the fleet is not your job.
      Also RtW gives you less information about enemy ships and their current status which makes gameplay more strategic and challenging. For example, you don't know how many torps were launched your way by what ships, you can't just start evading the second they launch and then rush your multi billion-dollar irreplaceable BBs into several DD squadrons like in UAD, or you can, but that might cost you.
      Actually hyped for RtW3. It has it's problems, but is enjoyable in general.

    • @maxlee1423
      @maxlee1423 Год назад +1

      @@5647mhjgt Yeah definitely. Though I wish they would change engine into something that doesn't throw 1998 style error windows every few games.

    • @graveyard1979
      @graveyard1979 Год назад +3

      I think ship design in RTW is more limited because it works more like real world ship procurement. The navy says what they need on a ship, then shipyards propose how they can achieve this, then the navy works with those proposals. So you don't have fine control over everything, but it's in line with theme of the game.

    Sea Power looks good. I look forward to trying it out. I would love to see a modern warship sim in which you control one ship as part of a taskforce or just day to day running of a warship in combat. Years ago I remember a colleague looking at a game called Type 22 which was about the Royal navy type 22 frigate. They were trying to develop a part of it which allowed you to be the Seawolf missile controller amongst other things but it never became a proper game . Having served on type 22's I'd love a chance to command one in a game like Sea Power.

    So glad to see Rule the Waves again. I had been unable to play Rule the Waves 2 after I had to reset my pc. Was hoping Dreadnoughts would fill the void, but they are still a long way off.
    That said, I'm most hyped for Task Force Admiral. From what progress the devs have shown so far, It's everything I ever wanted ever since I first played Victory at Sea Pacific. I'm hoping that, eventually in the distant future, they will add multiplayer campaign. To go head to head against my sister's fleet would just be perfect. Alternatively, a coop campaign would be nice. Each person takes a carrier task force and must coordinate with each other to win the war.
    Sea Power is the other big one I'm looking forward to. Usually not a fan of the Cold War naval aesthetic. Over the years of Wargame, Cold waters, and Dangerous waters, I've kind of warmed up to the Cold War ships.

    Rule The Waves and RTW II are amazing games, and the graphics are top of the line 1995-era CGA. The game play is amazing though - the map is a simple two tone zoomable globe of the entire planet and models curvature of the earth into range and shooting calcs. Many is the time when I had one friendly task force just barely in sight of another, which itself was being furiously engaged by an enemy even further beyond the horizon.
    if you like full on fleet actions with realistic outcomes but without all the chrome and visual eye candy of most games then RTW / RTW II is for you.

    November 21, 2023 - My favorite Naval Warfare game was the 1990's game "Harpoon". It was a great game, with a lot of granularity, well researched maps, and their customer service was excellent. I'm really sorry that they gave up on developing and releasing an updated version of the game. A year or two ago I purchased "Command - Modern Operations", but I haven't had the time to learn how to play it. I spend most of my time with the outstanding Armored Fighting Vehicle sim "Steel Beasts". I am more of a "Tread Head" than a sailor, and I'm only interested in Naval sims because I like to create real world warfare scenarios. Air assests are fairly easy to include in combined operation scenarios using the various in game tools. What I find most interesting and exciting are the wonderful graphics that are being generated for games now. They are almost photorealistic.

TFA is a maybe i need to see more gameplay before thinking of buying it. i would love to play Modern Naval warfare but i would have to watch a lot of how to play videos because i have no Naval experience on a submarine. But i think it would be a great experience with friends and random people.

    I LOVE devs for catering to a pretty small market with tons of ambition. Sea Power looks good as a concept. I'm on board with this one. To your point, it's always best to let them take their time. If they are able to execute their vision, it's got potential to grow the genre overall and create a wider market. That means more games like it! Military aviation simulator enjoyers have it really good. DCS for example... it's good enough to where people want to spend more on peripherals for the game than they spend on the game. Racing sims have tons of support as well.
    They can figure out monetization later. These types of games are expensive to develop for. I feel like some people look at DLC as is, when it's really about supporting the developers. Gotta pay the talented people to keep improving upon the project. If you want quality you have to pay for it. I play a lot of Paradox titles so I'm used to opening my wallet. It's cheaper than tabletop gaming. I play WH40k like 2 times a year but have spent... too much, lol. On plastic.
    As a community we vote with our wallets. I sometimes worry about the business side of early access development. I'm not saying with Sea Power specifically, but in general we should see that these games are a niche. Rare, as the video says. It's really really rare to see a project with this ambition but a defined scope...in development right now. What it promises is realistic. There are other EAccess titles that are priced way too high or too low to fund sustained development. There are titles that are just too ambitious, ones that are cash grabs. This looks like a real move to "disrupt" the market. Or grow it. Just speaking from the business side of it.
    Sea Power to me looks like a game I could play for hundreds of hours. We deserve what the fancy DCS pilots get, with their $2000 peripheral setups 😂. God bless em. That's the dream to have for naval sims. I really hope Sea Power is a step in that direction.

    There has been rumors floating that US DOD put a hold on "Modern Naval Warfare:" because it modeled the submarine systems too realistically and jeopardized classified information or something to that effect so it's been on hold or some things are being resigned, but I do not know if that's just a rumor or accurate. I really cannot wait for it and also yearn for a spiritual successor to Harpoon 4 which was cancelled which would have had a 3d open world model much like combining Harpoons strategy layout of harpoon 1 and 2 combined with a Cold waters or jane's fleet command type of 3d world. A game like that has been a wish of mine since Harpoon was cancelled long ago.

    Anyone has ever Pacific storm: allies? If not you can try the games, it's a ww2 strategy combine with controlling the fighter/bomber with the ability to jump to controlling every single gun turrets available in the aircraft, just think it like men of war 2 with ability to control every single plane that you bring into the battle and control it to every single turrets the aircraft has. The games had a Pacific map where you issue strategic command and managing your fleet and bases, also build what ship and aircraft to build. For anyone's wondering it's a total war style ww2 naval battle, but it's a very old game from 2007 or more perhaps. If you don't mind the old graphics there are still some bug issues as well (at least the last version I played long time ago that yet has the last patch and bug fixes). If someone from the developer read this please make the sequel or remaster it with modern graphics so people will enjoy the mechanic and concept of the game more

    I'm 50 years old and I'm just now starting to get interested into 'gaming' because it seems like the graphics technology has finally made this interesting ( imo ) So with that: 2 stupid questions please. I do not want to play on-line because that's where you go to get killed. Instantly.
    *(1)* Do these games (and others like them) have the option to just play the A.I. or are they only ON LINE?
    By the way is DCS online only?
    *(2)* Can you get Cheat Codes for *off* *line* *use* *only* ?

    My late 2023 opinion on these games:
    Sea Power: After recently reinstalling Cold Waters, I am very excited for this game. War on the Sea has recently become stagnant, UAD doesn’t appeal me, and RtW 3 can only get you so far, so I’m fresh out of naval games and looking forward to this one.
    TFA: While I generally don’t enjoy overly complex games or simulators, this game looks promising and highly customizable, so hopefully it won’t be disappointing.
    RtW 3: Played RtW 2 and it was everything I wanted. UAD is still very much unfinished imo despite consistent and constant updates. RtW 3 has been amazing so far, and that’s only with a couple of minor updates. All I need now is the submarine naming bug fixed and more time to play and I’ll be good.
    MNW: I would certainly love to play this, even with the complexity and steep learning curve (I would do anything to play as/on SSN-777). However I fear that the mentioned DLCs will make it a sort of DCS- or MFS-style “pay $60-90 for a barebones platform where you have to pay $100 to enjoy the game you already paid for” thing. Of course DCS is free but MFS is not. Either way it would be fun to have a submarine game focused on a Virginia-class sub.
