You are the YT watch channel that keeps pretentiousness out of the hobby and we love you for it. I think exploring and reviewing watches in the $200-$2000 range is going to really be the inch for you that the watch community needs. There was a recent thread on the WatchesCircleJerk subreddit and someone was asking if there were any actual down-to-earth watch RUclipsrs who didn't make your eyes roll into the back of your head, and your name came up a lot! Keep up the good work. I watch a ton of YT watch videos, but your channel is the only one I actually subscribe to.

Okay just finished the vid. It looks pretty cool, I agree and think changing straps to anything 2 piece would allow it to sit a bit lower on the wrist as opposed to how the NATO raises it up. Thanks for the vid Ben, great looking field watch. 😎👍

Hi Ben, I discovered Boldr recently in my quest for a perfect every day field watch. In addition to the Venture, I also have the Boldr Expedition Everest (nice), Seiko Alpinist (classic beauty) , Hamilton Khaki Field (the standard, but terrible lume), Victorinox Titanium INOX (also poor lume), Citizen Promaster Tough Titanium (plain, but super tough with ecodrive as well), Tissot T-Touch Expert Titanium Solar (interesting look and features), Traser P67 Officer Pro Automatic (tritium and superluminova), and a few others and have to say the Venture is the most comfortable and easy to wear every day watch I have. I never wore a watch at home (have a vivosport band), but after swapping the strap for FKM rubber (Watch Gecko), have it on my wrist all the time. I wear something else leaving the house for some variety and greater visual interest, but this has become my favorite practical watch. Disappears on my 7.25 inch wrist but is always there when needed even in the middle of the night. Great quality, EXCELLENT lume, and reasonable accuracy.

Well, this watch is ice cold in my opinion. You had it bang on: this is exactly what a modern mechanical field watch should be. And at a reasonable price too.

I had both this and the Hamilton at one point...At a little over 300 US It is right there with the Hamilton in price. I liked the modern styling of this One, But the Hamilton has a Swiss movement (Definitely better than the NH35. And it’s an iconic field watch. I ended up keeping the Hamilton flipping this. Don’t forget to at least consider it! Cheers!

John Buckmaster do you think a hand-wind only mechanical movement would be more durable wearing for outdoor activities? As there is no rotor swinging around inside. I have a Khaki auto which I assume is what you have but I was skeptical about wearing it out camping and ended up not wearing it. I had the crown fall out of a watch that I used to wear to work, luckily it was a $37 Timex Expedition, but ever since then it has made me appreciate screw-down crowns on a hard-use watch, but now I normally wear a G-Shock to work in.

    • @JohnBuckmaster-sw3wm
      @JohnBuckmaster-sw3wm 4 года назад +2

Appalachian Gunman I am back to blue-collar tradesmen work and I also now wear a G-Shock/or of a Vostok During the day… I personally don’t think it matters if it’s an automatic or a hand wind watch for durability . A key feature for me is a screw down crown or anything other than a dress watch. Particularly if it is claimed to be a significant depth of water resistance…It’s funny that you mention a Hamilton khaki as I made the mistake of going rafting in one… Before I understood the water resistance rating...I thought 50 m not 50 m and it does not. What it actually means in translation is you can wash dishes in it. 100 m is fine for swimming but keep in mind if it does not have a screw down crown and you accidentally leave it open in the first or second position for date or time it has zero water resistance. If you snacking on something and it’s pulled out to the first position the same applies… I have a Hamilton field watch but it is a replacement and I would probably take it off and put it in my pocket if there was a hard driving rain. Cheers, John

the watch looks great and the price is fair. im absolutly into field watch teritory, a good fieldy serves al my needs for an everyday watch (small, robust, highly readable, fits to almos all ocassions), so this boldr watches are definitiv on the ice cold side of things. a great (should i say "bold") move from bolder would be, to release a quartz version with a date window and heck, even with a domed acryl crystal (scratches are better then a broken crystal in the field ;) ) for a lower cost.. that would be exelent

The previous Venture model was a quartz model and featured a mineral glass if I remember correctly. It was also a bit more affordable, around 120, 130 $ I think. Maybe some of those are still sold somewhere online or maybe they make a similar model in the future. No day or date unfortunately, but still a great watch.

I have the green dial Venture and put it on an MN elastic strap. Perfect and light. A unique watch! The minute I saw it, if reminded me to Seiko cases of end of 60’ies and beginning of the 70’ies. Fantastic short L2L, and a cool design language. This Venture is a winner for me.

I may have told you this before, but I’ve got an 8” wrist and I wear my very early and apparently very rare black faced Lorus field watch all the time. It’s currently on a modified 20mm Zulu style strap in khaki green and black steel loops.
It keeps almost perfect time. I think it’s about 25 years old now.
What I want is a slightly bigger field watch as good as my classic Lorus.

I got one of these when it first came out, thinking about 2 years or less ago because I did like the simplicity and functionality of it, plus I was curious about the titanium aspect of it and the price was more then fair too, in fact I found a discount code that helped even more. I picked the triple black one, no regrets. I wear it to work with no issues. Boldr is legit and I’d happily buy another, the one I’ve got is quartz, but being it’s a work beater that isn’t a issue, I know it can take it. I am curious about the automatic and I think it looks great in the blue. If it wasn’t for this current situation, cutting unnecessary spending and saving money to buy a Subaru to replace my Jeep that’s seen better days as a daily then I’d be all over it. Oh yeah Ben, you did mention that you find the automatic version quite large; the previous quartz one I think would be a comfortable fit, it’s slender but not too tiny, like I said, I really do like my Venture, it’s a great everyday watch.

Ill be putting you to the test Ben. I bought the Seiko SRPG37K to replace my 10 year Citizen Chandler 818 and ill say the Seiko is not even close to a real feild watch, After trying to use it for a month I gave up. im a golf course superindendent constatnly outdoors, wet, chmical splashes, sand, mud, tools and the Seiko didnt sit well it wears way larger than its 39mm and feels top heavy was constatnly needing to adjust it and found i was removing it often to get my work done. So still needing a watch I did some research and found this chanel your review of the SPRG37K and the trir list vid where you mentiond the Citizen Chandler being the only good citizen was so true to my own experinces I almost bought another Citizen, But then saw the Boldr review, took a risk and bought the venture balck so far so good, it lines up perfectly with your review I took notice of the nato comments and got the Boldr rubber strap and it does make the watch sit lower and it never moves all day i can do anything with this watch on and not notice it. I do miss the day date window form my chandler. And you are right the crown is perfectly placed and grippy, but, it might be too grippy as it has un-wound itslef a couple of times during the day. Thanks for the chanel Also i love the massive rips you give the scammers out there, my wife got scamed by Fillipo Lorette they are every bit as bad as you say maybe worse we actully go one and chose to have 2 extra straps which they suggested for that watch ,,,,,they didnt fit the watch!

Boldr only came onto my radar recently but I started wanting one almost immediately. The affordable watch segment is a bit of a minefield in terms of quality, but Boldr genuinely seems to be intent on giving something unique, well designed and durable for the money. I've been looking for a go-anywhere watch that I won't worry about damaging, and the Venture fits the bill perfectly.
These non-date variants were £244 on Boldr's shop when I looked, but then I saw a UK retailer with a discount for the Carbon Black - I got it for just under £190. Really looking forward to its arrival.

Very good review. I was thinking hmmm that's pretty thick, and the Nato is just going to make it thicker, then you pointed that out. Great stuff. One thing you didn't point out is that although the watch is around £250, that does not include VAT. With 20% VAT on top that takes these up to around £300. And I'm not sure if you need to pay import tax on top of that. But there would be a handling fee. The post office usually charge £14. We're starting to get into the same price range as Hamilton Khaki's here. That makes this a much less attractive proposition.

I had a boulder… I flipped it to a friend… But looking to get another one to add to my field watch collection...This one is definitely thicker than the one I had Even though it also had the NH35 (with Date). The new darling of Micro-brands Is the Miyota (Citizen)9000 series. It’s reliable and accurate and high-beat. It is only slightly more expensive than the NH movments ($15-ish more)and is considerably thinner and allows for a much more sleek/thin Case. I also don’t like the fact that they didn’t take the time/Put in the effort to spec the correct movement (NH38A) with no ghost position. At $300 US They’re getting close to the Hamilton Field watch price territory. When I had both of those sitting side-by-side the Hamilton was the Handsdown winner(Better movement, iconic design, and horologically significant to say the least)
Thanks for another great review Ben! Love your channel!

I enjoy your down to earth outlook. So many channels start going high end (which is fine) but high end reviews don't hold my attention as much, because unless I have a cash windfall I can't justify spending that much on a time piece. The Boldr's look sweet, but would be at the very high end of my price range. I love the minimalist look of field watches. Divers are nice, but can seem too big sometimes.

Thanks Ben. I’ve seen Boldr reviewed previously elsewhere and the general impression I get is a solid, well put together watch. The design isn’t exactly innovative, but I appreciate the fact they have gone to lengths of producing a titanium case, the orange accent on the second hand, the design of the crown, and having great lume on the hands, numerals, and hour pips. What am I not keen on? Well I think if you’re going to put in a movement that has a date function then use it, a useful complication on a field watch; I think another use of orange on the dial would work well with the second hand, maybe the logo or Venture could be orange or if you put in a date complication, the window surround could be orange; and the strap is too thick to have double layers going under the watch. I can appreciate the benefits of a NATO strap, using the watch in tough outdoor environments a NATO will save the watch if a spring bar fails. Perhaps a thinner NATO would be better, equally a great colour coordinated silicone strap would work well. Just some thoughts and my own opinions on the watch.

Hi Ben, You're looking at nearly Ice Cold here. First, the choice of titanium for starts, like your beloved Lorus (I'm still trying to my hands on one!) is a great and uncommon material at this sub-$300 price. Second, the unique design of internal lugs (as opposed to standard, protruding lugs) gives it a great, off-beat look along with that angular, stealth-fighter industrial design. Which brings me to why its not ICE COLD. Even though it's easy to change, the stock strap for the Venture should have been a two-piece as you mentioned in your review to give it that integrated and more low profile look. Using the same blasted titanium finish on distressed Cordura, canvas, sail cloth, or even a denim strap on that blue model, would have been an ice cold choice. So get that on a magnet and shove it way to the right on the chart. Tell the fiancé she made a brilliant call to have you review these watches. Now I'm off to look a little closer at Boldr because I was ignoring them too.

Cool, I believe. The NATO strap will prevent you losing the watch should one of the spring bars break/fail.

Looks great value for the money, I had the older quartz model which I parted with to put towards a bit of a budget grail. I have to say out of all the watches I've owned, that is one I probably miss the most. Fantastic work with the review as always and when did the hair vanish?

Great design, small, decent quality, waterproof and affordable. What’s not to like - a definite „ice cold“. And if you don’t like the double layer NATO strap convert it to a Zulu strap by cutting off the useless second layer. The hardware on the strap does look good

The NATO strap was designed to be used with quartz watches with fixed lugs like the CWC watches. Putting then in a mechanical watch makes it unreasonably tall on the wrist

I've a BLDR gmt quartz and they are expensive but high quality (lumed bezels)etc. Not sure if I'd pay for the pleasure again. Some manufacturers do lug to Lug on the spring bars and that's where the discrepancy comes from

This watch is pretty cool. It reminds me of my Cincinnatus Field Watch I bought several months ago for a similar price. A two-piece canvas strap would definitely go better with the larger design of this watch.

I like this watch and it appears to be great value and excellent quality! I rate this timepiece as excellent. I looked on your website and I liked the Sinai model withe the calendar. Titanium case is a great idea making the timepiece I great weight and comfortable for the size. I really like this watch and would love to have one! Great discussion and review on your video. New to your channel and I subscribed! Thank You for a great review!

Love the video. These watches look great. Would pick up the black dial version, and I would swap the nato strap for a black canvas strap. It's great that they made a redesign, although the first version of the venture was good looking as well. It's great that it has a 200 m water resistance, cause I believe that all field watches should have at least 100 m water resistance. Great video, as always, and a fantastic Channel overall.

Hi Ben , really like the reviews you do of the affordable watch market segment . I noticed affordable titanium watches that were sold in the department stores of Switzerland in the early 90s made by Boccia , at this moment in time titanium anything was pretty rare. Any chance of a Boccia review ?

Hi, Ben, good video review on the Boldr Venture. I have it in the Desert beige and my only negative about it is the Arabics are NOT lumed, and OK, yeah, the ghost date wheel bugs me a little, even though everyone thinks a field watch should just be a 3-hander, but why put an NH35 in there and not use all its features? Other than that it's a great watch.

I don't want the watch giveaway, but my only suggestion would be, people enjoy your quality of video and depth of coverage on each watch, so some people would probably like to see you cover some watches a bit above the price of what you usually cover, ie. the Seiko classics, and just the general sub-1000$ market, your perspective on watches like the SKX or hamilton khaki field mech would be very welcome

This is a beautiful watch, with great specs! I would really appreciate it if you would start including the length of the bands in your videos. I’m so tired of not being able to wear my new watches until I can spend more money on a watch band that fits! I’m 67 years old, my wrists are arthritic, and I’m on a limited income. This makes spending extra for an XL band so I can wear the thing, a real hassle! I love watches, and my “hobby” is watching watch reviews on RUclips. Please help me in making watch buying choices that I can use right out of the box! Thanks for a great video, and I will see you in the next!!!

I like this watch just fine. I got into watches about a year and a half ago and blew my wad on a bunch of field type watches, though. :D I don't think I could allow myself to by another field type watch for a long long time. But for someone looking for a field watch, this is certainly...inoffensive.

I hate the fact that most of micro brands use mechanisms with date on a no date dial... Just put the damn NH38 no date and it will not have the stupid "ghost position" on crown and watch will feel "normal" not like some franken maden with random parts not meant for the watch parts.
