Whoops! We accidentally put Event Horizon twice, but that's because it's totally worth a rewatch. What other box office bombs are totally worth it?
Idiocracy got the same treatment as Galaxy Quest did. (Both in my top 10)
I own it and several others on this list on DVD. Good list, but there's a few worth mentioning. The remake of Night of The Living Dead is fantastic and was a gem from 1990. The last Boyscout is an underated action and comedy staring Bruce Willis. Universal Solider was another underated action-packed film that really was pretty big when it came out. People Under The Stairs was Wes Cravens' work in the 90's that showed that he could make horror that was also based on social commentary like the LA riots, which were going on at the time. I like that you have Peter Jackson's early films like Dead Alive, but The Frighteners really showed Jackson's ability to adapt to great visual effects. There's many others I can think of that I personally own today because they were such good films that I know I will want to watch again. Lots of great movies actually came out in the 90s. Dark City was actually being filmed on the same lot as The Matrix, but you seem to forget about The 13th Floor, which does something similar. I don't think any of those ideas would have come about without Ghost In The Shell, one of my personally favorite anime films from the 90's of all time. Strange Days, which I used to own, doesn't take place in the near future it's in 1999 on new year's eve which was the future when the film came out.
I wish that Coolworld was on Blue ray.
"Event Horizon" is AWFUL, the most disturbing trash I've ever seen.
@@LucidDubQuest Then you sir have no taste! LOL. I'm messing, to each their own. What didn't you like about it just curious?
My husband (then boyfriend) was diagnosed with cancer shortly after Galaxy Quest came out. We had already watched it in theatres three times because we loved it so much. I saw him off to the operating room with "Never give up, never surrender!" He didn't.
This comment made my day ❤
dude, how did this keyboard get all dusty all of a sudden
Well, damn. I wasn’t ready for this comment.
I'm not crying, you're crying!
Iron giant is so goodddd
The love for Galaxy Quest that turned it into a cult classic grew organically over the years. Even if the studio hyped it when it came out, it still might have taken a while to grow into what it is today. Oh -- and besides Alan Rickman and Sigourney Weaver, you can't forget Sam Rockwell and Tony Shalhoub rounding out the cast. Plus Enrico Colantano and smaller roles by Rainn Wilson, Missy Pyle, and Justin Long.
The best Star Trek parody AND the best Star Trek movie ever made...
Well said. 👍
The narrator was right: the studio marketed the film all wrong. I was a freshman in high school when it came out & saw it in theaters expecting a straight up sci-fi adventure. Saw it again in my 20s & enjoyed it way more
Yes. Galaxy Quest is a wonderful movie from start to finish. I never grow tired of watching it.
Saw this in theaters when it came out, I thought it was one of the funniest parodies out there.
No love for Darkman? That film was just so awesome. It was a tribute to Hammer horror icon's, Fantastic action scenes, some Mission Impossible tropes throw in and hilarious humor. Who could forget Neeson hanging from a chopper telling the cops," Stay away, He is Mine."
I absolutely loved Darkman... Must've watched it a dozen times.
- "See the Dancing FREAK!"
@@GeneralGeorgeS.PattonJr. The scene where he grabs the stuffed toy for his girl and yells "Take the F***ing Elephant!" I laughed half an hour over that!
@@earlleeruhf3130
Yes…
Same here!
I love the part when he impersonates Pauley & frames him for $ theft, then he’s sitting on the bench after Pauly gets thrown out the window, some woman freaks out & thinks she’s seeing double because Pauly's body lands right next to them.
The Last Action Hero, Galaxy Quest and Iron Giant are all amazing, and some of my all time favorite movies
Galaxy Quest is a classic!
I saw Last Action Hero when it came out, after the negative reviews were out too. I liked it and wondered what was wrong with the critics.
I frickin LOVE The Iron Giant!!!!!!!! It's my go-to movie for staying home sick. Also it was my introduction to Vin Diesel.
@@RichM3000 Same here. I absolutely LOVED *Last Action Hero* and didn't understand the critical hate it got. The concept was actually brilliant, and beautifully directed. Critics are weirdos. (I also love *Mom and Dad Save the World* with Jon Lovitz!)
@@AshlieJermaine "You are who you choose to be"
_Dark City_ was Roger Ebert’s top film of the year, and he even went so far as to provide the commentary tracks on the DVD. Yes, it’s a notoriously underrated science fiction film, but well worth the watch.
Dark City is a masterpiece of sci fi cinema. I'm so happy that I watched it at the theater back in 98'. I actually enjoy this movie much more than the Matrix.
I'll meet you at the bar on Shell Beach, your round first
I saw it in the theater as well. Amazing. Strange Days though, we walked out of.
Dark City was much more cerebral than Matrix was. Matrix rand with the light idea of being stuck in a manipulated environment and used it as a springboard to make some truly amped up action sequences. Any deep questions into the logic behind anything fell flat, but it was fun and action packed. That is why it did so much better then Dark City, which ran more like a Hitchcock film or Gumshoe Noir with a scifi twist. It was more about the head game.
@@kevingray8616 A theater near me had a double feature one night of Dark City and the Matrix. It was up in the Blue Mountains in a cool old school art deco theater. Such a good night. Strange days, I really wanted to like.... But failed.
There was also "Thirteenth floor" coming out in 1999 which I liked quite a bit.
Mars Attacks was another movie that got overshadowed by Independence Day back in 1996. Thankfully the movie Mars Attacks is greatly appreciated and knew not to make a tacky sequel that no one asked for.
I legit thought mars attacks was scary when i saw it in 96. I have no god damn clue why but yeah my perception to it was not a comedy but more of a horror film. Even though i guess it was supposed to be a comedy scifi horror. I was 10yr old when it came out so cut me some slack.
@@densetsu4286 and they convinced every big Hollywood name to have their 5 seconds on screen before being zapped to dust.
@@densetsu4286lol and I thought I was the only one. I was the same age
Ack ack, ack ack , ack ack!!
Mars attacks was awesome
I loved galaxy quest. Simultaneously Sci fi while poking fun at actors from Star Trek. The Iron Giant is just simply art. Great art.
Galaxy quest was a bomb
Galaxy Quest is actually listed as a Star Trek film and wasn't a bomb because it more than doubled what it cost and took off on DVD as well.
@@MountainFisher "Galaxy Quest is actually listed as a Star Trek film" ...By whom? Certainly not Paramount. Star Trek fan conventions have embraced it, yes, but most have never been _exclusively_ Star Trek. The thing that most saves _Galaxy Quest_ from bomb status is that, unlike most movies in general, it actually made *more* on the second weekend of its release than the first weekend.
@@ferd617 By fans.
@@MrGabeanator so we're several other good films. Example: Dr. Strangelove, It's a Wonderful Life, Hocus Pocus, Fight Club, Blade Runner, The Shining, Clue. I can name more
I’ve always had a warm spot in my heart for Mystery Men. It’s one of the stupidest and at the same time most brilliant adventure films ever. How can you not love lines like “When you can balance a tack hammer on your head, you will head off your foes with a balanced attack.”
..and why am I wearing the watermelon on my feet? .....I don't remember telling you to do that!
Stacked cast, hilarious concept....
Still occasionally see the Herkemer Battle Jittney pop up here and there.
And nobody laughs when I say" just junk it"
Amusing and ridiculous as it was there were great moments, especially the Batman-like character allowing his foe to "escape" just to fight him later. It's likely the best parodies of superhero film I've ever seen
@@ryurc3033 You just made me laugh. You are number one, all others are number 2 or lower.
I kind of see Mystery Men as a predecessor to superhero films like Suicide squad and Guardians of the galaxy that take on the roles of quirky b teams in larger universes.
Event Horizon, Galaxy Quest, Johnny Mnemonic, & Dark City are classics! 👍👍
I actually saw Galaxy Quest in the theater and thought it was wonderful and lots of fun. Not knowing a lot about marketing, I was quite surprised to see that it didn't last long in the theaters.
Honestly rocketeer always seemed like a fever dream to me. I saw it when I was like 4 and never heard anything about it again. Wasn’t even sure it was real for awhile 😂, but I remember thinking it was super cool!
Ed Wood is genius and shows what Tim Burton could do before he became addicted to CGI and trying to appeal to children, it’s also one of Johnny Depps best roles
I loved Galaxy Quest, Cool World, and The Rocketeer growing up! I think Cool World was my introduction to Brad Pitt.
I have never understood why 1) The Rocketeer wasn't HUGE when it came out and 2) why more people don't know it today? I don't know what else you could want - a PERFECT adaptation of an amazing comic, pitch perfect casting of a slew of phenomenal actors who give some of the best performances of their careers (Timothy Dalton, I'm looking at you!), and a production quality that would make Cecil Demille slap his mother. What the hell am I missing?!?!?
The Rocketeer fictionalized history, in this case WWII. That rarely works. Captain America wouldn't work if it was set in 1943. Science fiction + history is generally a bad combination.
That was a genre in the 1960's, for example 10,000 Leagues under the Sea. Rocketeer was 30 years away from that.
Haven't you noticed we have decades of the same genre? Science fiction 1970s, 1980s was the action hero, 1990's kind of mixed it up, we've been in the super hero genre forever now.
@@fuzzywzhe Well, Inglorious Basterds fictionalized history a GOOD BIT and that worked....and was pretty popular...
It’s an undeniably perfect film that unfortunately had the Terminator 2 teaser stitched on the front at my local cinema - hard to sit back and enjoy such a visual treat as The Rocketeer with a brainworm like a Terminator factory stuck in your head. :(
My favorite superhero movie, certainly. And it is reasonably faithful to the source material, which isn't a hard-and-fast requirement, but helps.
Plus Jennifer Connelly at peak hotness! 😋
Johnny mnemonic is one of my favorites.
Reminds of a live action anime sci-fi.
Definitely worth the watch.
The last action hero is criminally underrated, it's nostalgic gem to me as a kid during the 90s.
yeah I like this too. the big laugh for me, within the movie within the movie is the joke about Stallone as "Terminator".
I didn't see the movie until sometime in the last year or so but I think it was really ahead of it's time
It is ABSOLUTELY underrated!
That and Jingle all the Way, 2 underrated Arnie movies both classics.
Hudsucker Proxy is a masterpiece, it’s cray that more people don’t know it. Paul Newman plays a fantastic Antagonist and Tim Robbins for once plays a goofy protagonist who is basically along for the ride
I never understood the hate for Strange Days. It's been on my top 10 list since it came out. You're right about hard to find though. It took me years to finally track down a DVD copy of it.
Dark City is such a masterpiece. Saw it in the theater, and it's remained a Top 10 movie for me ever since. (I love dystopian sci-fi). Blade Runner and Children of Men are my favorite flicks.
Strange Days is just a gem. I watched it in the 90ies and loved it so much.
I'm glad that Galaxy Quest ended up getting a lot of love by word of mouth. I bought it on VHS back in 2000, and sure enough, half of my friends know what I'm referring to when I say, "By Grebthar's Hammer". R.I.P. Alan Rickman.
So many of my favourite movies in one compilation! Wow! May I suggest that Jacob's Ladder be added to your list ? They are notable omissions.
I was very impressed that you included Dark City, The Huducker Proxy (you know, for kids!), Mystery Men and Tank Girl. Those are rarely included in similar lists. Each reinforcing cinema as an artform with their own unique vision.
I love Galaxy Quest, The Iron Giant and Hudsucker Proxy! Such great movies, it's crazy to think they all underperformed.
I only recently seen Galaxy Quest and I never thought Alan Rickman could be so funny because he's always serious in his other movies. Also the aliens are so adorable. Love this movie!
He's also serious in this movie. It's just the circumstances that make it funny.
He’s hilarious in Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy
@@DoloresLehmann "Oh, it's always about YOU, isn't it??"
@@zimriel "I see you managed to get your shirt off."
Well, not all the aliens were adorable. Those cute-for-a-short-while little aliens on the planet ate their hurt coworker.
Strange Days is a fantastic film I’ve watched and rewatched many times over the years
So many great throwbacks in here. Saw Johnny Mnemonic, Rocketeer, Last Action Hero, and Tank Girl all in the theater when they came out. All highly underrated. Galaxy Quest is, of course, a classic. Dark City looks really familiar and intriguing. I need to check that out.
For me it is less Matrix and more Metropolis with Blade Runner characters. Rufus Sewell is easy to watch and the lighting with set pieces is fantastic make for timeless cinematography.
Jennifer Connelly is devastatingly beautiful in it.
@@Powermad-bu4em Equally so in the Rocketeer!
Galaxy Quest is a masterpiece actually. If you get the parody. Very well layered and made.
Johnny Mnemonic suffered at the box office because it went up against Die Hard with a Vengeance (released a week before), Braveheart (same week), Casper (same week), and Bridges of Madison County (week after).
Saw every single one of these in the theatres and loved them all. Especially Event Horizon, Galaxy Quest and The Iron Giant those three movies were freakin epic. 😁👍
I’ve seen all but two of these, mostly during their theatrical runs, and most I actually own on DVD. Galaxy Quest, Event Horizon, and Iron Giant are among my favorites!
What you failed to mention about Galaxy Quest was that the studio couldn't reach a deal with Regal Cinemas (who at the time was the largest exhibitor in the US), so Regal Cinemas refused to show the movie at its locations. They eventually came to terms and began showing the movie thus helping it recoup its money.
This list is now my 'to watch list' for the next few weeks. Thanks
I was one of those few people who saw Dark City and Edd Wood in the theaters and loved it. Those were damn good movies.
Never give up, never surrender! Galaxy Quest is still one of my top favorite movies.
Johnny Mnemonic and Tank Girl are two of my all-time favorite movies… I was Obsessed when I was a kid
Galaxy Quest is one of my favourite movies. Tank Girl, Mystery Men, and Ed Wood are pretty awesome too! Highly recommend!
Many of these were favs of my brothers & I growing up. Event Horizon, Dark City, Galaxy Quest, Brain Dead (I'm Australian) & Tank Girl still do the rounds in our places.
Event Horizon's cast was half British, no? At least.
Funny how so many of the so-called Box office bombs mostly turned out to be my favorite movies not only of that particular year they came out but stayed my favorites all throughout my life. Talking about a good 80 to 90%. And seeing clips of them every so often, it urges me desperately to watch them anew and then again. So I've already seen very many of these films innumerable times.
Wow, this was a GREAT list. I've already seen 9 of these, and I LOVED EVERY ONE! That really makes want to take your recommendation to see the rest of them! Thanks so much for this. I'm going to add the others to my queue.
Best ones on this list.. Ravenous and Dark City. As for Last Action Hero.. I was one of the few to see it in the theaters and it was meant for a theater. Every rewatch has been underwhelming, but first time in the theater was amazing.
I am probably one of those International viewers of Last Action Hero because I saw it in Israel, July 1993.
Dark City is a gloriously wonderful movie. Mystery Men heralded the modern superhero ensemble movie. Hudsucker Proxy is a gem too few know. I'd say that Galaxy Quest, Rocketeer, and Mystery Men are cult classics. I loved Last Action Hero and Tank Girl also.
*"Virtuosity"* from 1995 with Denzel Washington and a soon-to- breakout Russell Crowe, that's a entertaining piece of hokum, plus *"Dark City."* And *"The Iron Giant,"* which featured voice work for the Giant from Vin Diesel.
Absolutely love Last Actuon Hero and Galaxy Quest. Damn good movies!
And I also did like Mystery Men..
I think Hellboy 2019 is worth a re watch.
But yeah Dark City, The Rocketeer and Galaxy Quest were movies I saw in the theater as a teen and they were underrated fun flicks.
I really enjoyed Hellboy 2019. I think it’s just shot beautifully
The Iron Giant is one of my favorite movies.
The Rocketeer has been one of my favorite movies since it came out when I was a little kid
I love love LOVE Tank Girl - some great mentions here! Well done!
Galaxy Quest and Mystery Men are two of my favourite films
Last Action Hero is awesome, it deconstructs but also celebrates the action genre same time! Made back when hollywood had balls and was willing to take risks and try new things!
I agree it was the most wonderful fun
Was really glad to see that Strange Days was on this list. I immediately thought of it when I saw the video title. It's an absolute Sci-fi masterpiece IMHO and I never understood why it wasn't appreciated more.
Great list!! I've seen every one of these except Ravenous (it's on my list) and I'm a fan of every one of them. In fact I just got Event Horizon on 4K BluRay in the mail today and have a few of the others on the list already in my collection.
Last Action Hero has been a part of my childhood. I am glad to be a 90s kid.
Event Horizon was a damn good film. Didn't quite understand it when I was younger, was more for Sci-fi action, so the lack of ''action scenes' made me think the film was boring, but watching now, I can apricate the master piece of horror it is(although not a horror fan) it is a damn good film.
that's the only movie I've ever seen that actually scared me I literally can't sleep after watching that
It has some truly disturbing moments. When listening to the audio of what happened to the original crew...That's the stuff of nightmares.
@@jm7804 "We're leaving."
All of these are my faves!! I love that every last movie on this list is one that I’ve been obsessed with
This list is full of great movies. I've seeing and loved almost all of them.
Almost all of these films I saw either in the theater or on video not long after their release on home video. I would say that The Frighteners was Jackson’s better 90’s offering and also very under-appreciated. Cool World had one of the best soundtracks of all-time, along with Judgement Night, another gem.
Many of these sci-fi films were much more cerebral, though they had action, it was not the focus of these films, it was more incidental.
The Last Action Hero was ahead of its time and tom noonan did such a good job of parodying hid villain persona, like in Manhunter or Robocop 2.
Also, Jennifer Connolly was, in my opinion, absolutely at her height of beauty during this time especially in The Rocketeer.
Dead Alive was called Brain Dead in Australia/New Zealand. Galaxy Quest is brilliant.
Both are excellent films. Also called Brain Dead in the UK.
Galaxy Quest is one of those rare movies where I laughed so hard I couldn’t breathe. The scene where they are trying to bring the ship out of the dock. It goes on forever.
The scene where they land on the planet and just open the door without thinking was one of my favorites. "Is there air out there? You don't know!"
@@anon_y_mousse "I thought I was the crewman left on the ship that dies! Now I think I'm the crewman on the planet who dies! MOMMY!"
Galaxy Quest, Iron Giant and Quest for Camelot, The Last Action hero are still family fav. on those cold winter weekends.
Ed Wood, Galaxy Quest and Mystery Men are fun, smart and easy to watch. Event Horizon is like a colonoscopy, someone thinks it's needed but the anesthesiologist called in sick and they went ahead anyway.
I remember Galaxy Quest when it came out. I loved it.
Just watched Dark City again a couple weeks ago and had forgotten how much I enjoyed it.
Iron Giant, Rocketeer and Event Horizon are legit classics.
five of those i haven't watched. thanks for the recommendations!
imo, ed wood is burton's finest work to date! and all the sci fi here is great!
Galaxy Quest is still one of my favorites. Born in 74, I came up watching reruns of lost in space/land of the giants etc , so GQ was right up my alley
I've seen almost all of the movies on this list and have only love for them! Have to watch the few I've missed. Thank you for this awesome list!
here's so many movies I loved on this list; Cool World, Last action hero, Tank girl, Mystery men & Dark City were all fantastic in their day & i would happily watch them all again today. Galaxy Quest, I could watch every day. Sigourney Weaver, when her lips said "F" but they dubbed it over to "Screw that" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Dude...so many of my straight up all time favorites on this list. Especially Hudsucker Proxy, Last Action Hero, and Cool World.
Last Action Hero is a great spoof of 80s - 90s over-the-top action movies while itself being a fun, over-the-top action movie. Although a valid critique is that the movie couldn't decide what type of parody it wanted to be, it's still great dumb fun if you like Arnold movies and haven't seen it.
This is a wonderful list -several of these are among my favourite movies (Dark City, Ed Wood, Strange Days, Galaxy Quest, Event Horizon), while I haven't even heard of some (Cool World, The Iron Giant, Ravenous) and would have kept overlooking others (The Rocketeer, Hudsucker Proxy, Mystery Men). Among other things, this list shows that the 90s were the last best decade for movies, and the best for sci-fi bar none.
*So glad you added Event Horizon and Galaxy Guest on this list. And Ravenous was...lol...Fun.*
Last Action Hero is my favorite Arnold movie. It amazingly good and touchingly sweet.
I actually saw Johnny Mnemonic in theater...
Galaxy Quest was a fun Star Trek parody, and is likely the reason The Orville exists.
The Rocketeer... who wouldn't want the ability to fly like that?
Event Horizon was definitely a psychological sci-fi horror, though the "otherworldly horror" was not on the ship, it basically WAS the ship.
Last Action Hero was definitely an odd one, as was Tank Girl (as far as I remember, not sure I actually watched the whole movie).
Ad Rocketeer: there was a popular 80s videogame (c64, Amiga) named Rocket Ranger - pretty much the same thing. :)
Galaxy Quest is a classic. Dark City one of my all time favs.
Galaxy Quest is fantastic. I do remember that it had hardly any lead-up promotion to it, and I don't think I saw it at the theaters because of that. But once we saw it on video, we realized what a terrific "heart" it had to it, and for a number of years we watched our DVD copy at least annually. It hasn't gotten old yet!
Hell yeah, Galaxy Quest was SO good. It still makes me chuckle and I've seen it dozens of times. Great pick for this list, it never blew up like I wish it had. A sequel would have been very cool.
Great list. A lot of terrific movies on here. LOVE Strange Days.
I saw Galaxy Quest in the cinema, and I would do so again. It's so underrated.
Totally agree with most of the movies on this list i already seen, i only miss a few that i like to watch next days :D good video
i loved a lot of these movies when I was younger, still remember watching Event Horizon in theaters. I also still have my Iron Giant toy from the VHS.
Last Action Hero is one of my favorite Arnold Movies!
Light replay of iron giant on cartoon network is a understatement, i remember they once had it on loop for 24 hours around Thanksgiving
Your take on Iron Giant is spot on...as an adult I found it to be one of the best kids/adult animation movies of all time...
The Rocketeer is a national treasure. And Cool World is fantastic!
All these movies hold a special place in my childhood.
I LOVED The Rocketeer!!!
The Dark Half was also very good, as was Galaxy Quest!
Great list.
Thanks for this list there's a couple I haven't see but galaxy quest and Ed Wood are 2 of my favourite movies.
What a well compromised and analyzed list of some of my favorites!
Strange Days and Dark City are both really great films that got overshadowed by other movies
Excellent list!
I've always loved Cool World. It has great looking animation and feels quite original.
I watched so many of these films in the theater and loved them from the moment I saw them. I've tried to share them with others, but other people have never really liked them as much as I do.
I thought very little of Dark City, but admired the huge ambition of Strange Days. Saw Rocketeer in the theater; the crowd loved it. Always meant to see Johnny Mnemonic; this video will prod me to finally do so :)
There are some real hidden gems here, but my biggest grin was reserved for seeing Ed Wood here. YES! BRILLIANT! One of my all-time favorites. ABSOLUTELY worth seeing for Martin Landau's Oscar winning perform alone. "Karloff?! Side-keeck?!?!" Still cracks me up.
I didn't see many of these, but I liked what I saw. _The Last Action Hero_ was a fun little romp. A guilty pleasure always worth rewatching. _Tank Girl_ was fantastic, because Lori Petty was incredible in it. _The Hudsucker Proxy_ was a movie that people trained to like Hollywood blockbusters would never know how to appreciate, but it's a gem.
GalaxyQuest was genius. Everyone played their parts perfectly and it was hilarious. I mean, what's his face gets high all the time, gets munchies - seen in this clip - and just happy trips the whole movie. Oh man, I miss this era...
Talking about different fandoms which have adopted a movie into their own wider universe, Event Horizon is considered by many of us 40K fans as a honourary member of our extended universe!
Many? Pretty much "all". PWS Andersen cited 40k as an influence, himself.
@@zimriel never knew that! Awesome tidbit of knowledge there!
Some of these are my favorite films that I watched over and over when they were released. Tank Girl, Galaxy Quest, and Iron Giant were all movies so popular among my friends and I. And I also enjoyed many of the others on this list, like Johnny Mnemonic, Ravenous, and Event Horizon, quite a bit back in the day. I just was reading about the real events that inspired Ravenous the other day as well. Maybe it's time for a rewatch of all of these.
Dark City is one of my favorite sci-fi films of all time.
