- How to remove a basin for a bathroom refurbishment!
I show you how to remove a basin when you're doing a bathroom refurbishment or renovation - or for whatever reason. I'll show you how to turn off the hot and cold water. How to disconnect your old flexible water supply hoses. How to remove the old taps from your basin. We'll then remove the waste pipe from the bottom of the basin waste, then cut away and remove the basin itself. I'll also show you how to remove the pedestal.
In the next video we'll talk about planning the bathroom and doing the first fix of the pipework, ready for the new bath, radiator and vanity unit basin.

I'm a single dad and newly qualified Plumber at the age of 37. I wanted a career change. Hard find someone give me a job at my ages, so set up on my own. I find your videos really helpful on my new career journey. Keep up the good work. Greetings from Stoke
Hey man, I'm thinking of doing the exact same thing! Currently 29, how did you go about qualifying?
@@mrbrit6746 2 three hour evening classes a week at college for two years.
@@mrbrit6746 I got a friend who did one of the short intensive courses and he said it was rubbish. Only learnt how solder and fit a bathroom. Id stay away from them.
@@baldinho8508 Am considering doing the same sort of course alongside my current job, however I have a feeling I might need to find someone in the trade to work with for free just to gain some practical experience. I'm hoping it'll all work out :)
@@mrbrit6746 Good idea. I'm doing half a day a week voluntary for gas. I was going start the course September in college, but I'm waiting a year with the pandemic. You need a placement with gas as you need 40 odd assesments on your work full a portfolio.. My old college tutor is awesome. He gets really excited talking about Plumbing and it was him put me in contact with a friend for my placement. He's always at the end of the phone to if I get stuck. I did some intensive courses for tiling, kitchen fitting, plastering, so I can do abit more go along with it.
For somebody who isn't a plumber and just does bits of DIY work around the house, taking it down to a granular level is very helpful and informative so thank you! 👍
It's not basic or boring to me! It's precisely what I needed to learn to take out an old biddie sink in my bedroom, so - ta! 👏🏻
This is perfect. I'm about to start our bathroom.... I'll tell the wife I can't start until I've watched your series.... Bought me time! Oh yeah!!!
Oh yeah! Great work mate 🤣
Know what you are saying brother!
Good Lad John, you can't rush these tasks you know, I don't know your wife but I'm sure if theres water cascading through the ceiling then she might hit the roof? Put your feet up, pour a beer and watch the master perform!
Dude
You are awesome n witty, I have been watching your videos for years, you provide great step by tutorials for non trade people like me and give confidence to tackle things in the past I would be wary off. It takes guts to put things like this out with all those "experts" who always seem to know better!
Where do I send that tenner?
When you lost your Stanley knife!!!! 😂😂😂 Happens to me all the time, even though it's bright bloody yellow!
Loving this makeover series because my bathroom is the same size and shape, and I'm desperate to rip out the disabled shower and put a bath back in. The fan dust tip from the last vid was a brill tip.
Really interested in this series. Just found episode 2 so will go find episode 1 now.
I’m new to trying to do a bit of plumbing, thanks to your vids I’ve put a new tap in my ensuite. Keep em coming. Thank you. 👍
Please continue with this type of video as i'm a total novice and need good guidance from you!! I need your ideas to do my own bathroom. Thanks. :)
Thanks James. The inline valves are hopeless and as you say "have you ever had one that doesn't leak?". How did you stop it leaking and what valves would you suggest for under a pedestal sink like that?
Its lovely to see top class bodge ups as allways your a real pro at it now James
Great timing for this series. I always smear those iso valve heads with vaseline after fitting to try to mitigate bathroom condensation corrosion particularly on the colds. Are there better qual valves like Peglers that are worth using?
Cheers James just about to start on a bathroom makeover for my daughter .....Ahhhhhhh Combining the separate toilet next. The ‘boxing in’ of the stack is 46cm x 30cm I’m hoping to move it a lot closer in to the wall to free up some more space. Keep the videos coming please 👍💪
Totally with you on Plasterboard screws! Usually removing a sink first problem is finding the shut off valves and then draining the pipes. I recommended a handy supply of old towels and cloths to mop up all the excess water (one of our plumbers used a wet vac when draining a radiator which I thought was pretty clever). Also those waste pipes are pretty stinky so I always plug them up with an old plastic bag and tape up.
I'm installing a basin this morning.
Good stuff great video James. 🤙
YO ROSS!
You are making it so much easier using that basin wrench. Pure mastery!!! I think I’ll stick to the crowfoot.
Hi, this is great. So once you do this can you turn the water back on?
Saturday morning ritual, have a coffee and watch your videos 👍👍
Haha! thanks man!
I thought it was only me that did this! 😁
@@awlonghurst all plans come to a stop on Saturday until I watch the video 😂
Thanks for the video!
What is the name of the tool you used to undo the nut from underneath the taps?
You’re wicked mate, had fun watching this, and hopefully learnt too, promise I won’t blame you if I flood my bathroom at the new house soon 😂!
Cheers mate 😎🙌🏻
Anyone got link to catalogue?
Also how you doing James during the pandemic?
Thanks. Very helpful.
Enjoyed that video mate... always good content even though I do kitchens and bathrooms myself I can tell you losing your tools for them few minutes is a pain in the arse... lost my wallet at work once. Flat tyre on the van in the morning, lost wallet after that.... found it 2 months later in the box with all the jack and wheel nuts in under my seat 😂😂😂😂😂 cancelled all cards and new driving licence n all. Take it easy mate and thanks for keeping us all sane whilst we can’t do bugger all!
I FEEL YOUR PAIN. If I could add up all the minutes of my life I've lost looking for ttols within 3 feet of me it would be.....a lot of MINUTES!
Video idea.... tool hunt in the van.... you’ll be surprised what you find.... maybe all the tapes and pencils we always lose!!!
Yes please for the planning a bathroom video!
So glad I'm not the only one who can't see tools that are right in front of me lol
I’m constantly misplacing my tools 🤣 another great video matey
What do you do if there are no isolation valves fitted to the water pipes?
*Better than expected!*
Enjoyed it, a great film, “it’s fine”. Regards, Chris.
When you couldn’t find your knife mate I must admit I was laughing as I have been there many times my friend
Fecking pipe cutters always seem to be hiding behind my feet all the time 🤣
Well said about the screws I've been a plasterer for 38 yrs and I still don't get it it gets on your nerves wen ur drilling them in
Many thanks
you should take taps of whb when you get it off the wall ???
Ohhhhh I can't wait to see part 0
Wash up bowl(s), and plant pot trays (or old veg trays) for tools and bits and bobs respectively.
I look forward to the planning video. Including shower and basin would be good.
You and Emily both enjoyed a flick through that ITS 2021 Catalogue 😉
"Ya gonna have to get a pair of grips in there and start swearing" 🤣 Personally I start swearing as soon I find out I have to do any plumbing at all. I'm hopeless. So I get my mate Andy the plumber in to scorch my skirting boards and spill solder on the carpet 🤬🤣🤣🤣
yes
thats perfect james
Glad I’m not the only one annoyed by different screw heads, top vlog as always 👍
just about to do this
Well hold tight! You've been learning again, thought you got away with popping in the big 'Granular' word!! I caught you!
The philps head is supposed hold the plaster better than a pozi.
Why wouldn't you take the basin off after disconnecting the pipe,s, then take the taps off with the basin is on the bench?
Is taking the taps off just adding another job to the removal
Every tradesman after 30mins of swearing looking for that particular tool: 'Oh, there it is'. 😂😂😂
Can you show that trap in a close up
I agree about the screws why does a spark use square heads.
Why did you take the taps off when you were removing the basin anyway.
Plumbers rates £££
He probably collects the scrap brass and copper and sells it as scrap as do most plumbers. Scrap merchants don't want your porcelain basin 😉
Phillips 2?
They don’t have positive lock on drywall screws, because they maker special dimple heads. They will set and release the screw just at or below the surface of the wall board. This allows a pro to install a room with an automated screw gun, or by hand much quicker as the tool handles the depth setting and then slip off the head of the screw.
The screw sits better in a ph2 aswell making it easier working over head
So glad I'm not the only one who loses their tools 30 seconds after using them.
leave the faucet handles on waste of time to remove if your replacing whole lav.
Were a gloves and right drill bit
Publishaed a bit late today guys. DON'T drink Reverend James. It is lovely. And made me get up a bit late!
I have a lovely dark, treacly, irish stout on the go atm. I call it "milk of amnesia"
Yes rev james is bloody beutiful👍
7.25 is literally me… put a tool down and can’t find it again😂
Just brill
Your sink is easily accessible, mine is very hard to reach. 😢. Wouldn’t you be better taking the taps off after the sink is removed?
Why didn’t you do a video of your plastering effort mate 😂🤣😂🤣😂. That ITS mag is probably the same as when I go into CEF I always buy stuff I don’t need.
One quick puck of a sledge! productivity increased by 500%
Hello
Hello friend. Hi from Russia!
Wow!! are those Ox cutters you’re using? You should do a video on them…oh wait!
Watching the video further why didn't you cut the pipes from the beginning so you don't have to take out the flexors and also you taken out the basin why did you bother taking out the tabs
Lost Stanley Knife......Just rewind the video, i found it in seconds 😂
Presumably PH2 for plasterboard, so the driver bit e.g.
www.screwfix.com/p/ph2-drywall-screwdriver-bits-ph2-2-pack/6623v
. . . disconnects better from the screw once correct depth reached, than a posi would (Unless/also it's just a good ole USA thing). With you on the bits of metal. Horrible, but fast. Look forward to next one.
I swear that my wife hides my tools so she can have a good laugh at my expense
Planning out the job in hand is the Holy Grail with regards to the finished product but with all those considerations there's always time to misplace your tools.... I keep mine in my pants but still have issues with the pencil, pipe cutter and pen knife fairy ps. love the tool porn
Looks suspiciously like a screwfix catalog!
I love it when people lose stuff, they check their pockets... Not these look in a few other places then check the pockets again haha.. (I never do thtat!) :P
Is that a shell case on the basin 😂
Did the lyrics really say, "climaxing on the toilet has never been good without you?"
Why did you take the taps off , no point ,smash the basin when it's off ,much easier
That vibrating Braun looks suspicious 🧐
The its plug was almost as long as the video
You are ok but your camera work is dreadful , your light has to be beside the camera mate, I didn’t see anything, you could have even switched the light on at least!
2:35 just because you "don't understand" doesn't make it stupid. Ignorant statement. Plaster and drywall screws are not structural screws so there made with specific threads to keep from "popping" like typical drywall nails without any shank. Drywall screws with coarse threads are meant for metal studs and there pitch are made to bite into the metal studs same applies to COARSE pitch and tapered drywall screws. Perhaps your using cheap china tooled and treated drywall screws where the material is flaking off or perhaps its user error where your not using a drywall/plaster bit to dimple and hold the drywall screw (usually magnetized) so your not holding the screw with your hand to set the screw. Now, try those things then rephrase your comment.
