When South Africa and Australia switched to decimal coinage, they both used 10 old shillings as their new rand/dollar. So this coin is equivalent to 20 shillings or one pound and has the same gold as an English sovereign of .2354 troy ounces.
Dankie Tesha. Tesha as child I ones had a 1/2cent. That was around 1978. At that time the 1/2cent was longer in every day use. I was child on my Dad's (1931-1984) farm and know zero of coins... In my Grandmother's (1903 - 1974) letter I see there was also a 1/4cent.
