GULF AIR review: economy class with Bahrain's national airline

- Gulf Air, national airline of the Kingdom of Bahrain have a vision to be the regional airline of choice in the Middle East and in this review, I experience their A320 in economy class to see just how good Gulf Air is.
Established in 1950 and one of the first commercial airlines in the Middle East, Gulf Air have been overtaken in size and reputation by nearby airlines such as Etihad, Emirates and Qatar Airways. For my latest flight review I wanted to see how Gulf Air stack up against the competition. Join me as I visit Bahrain International Airport for the first time before boarding my first ever economy class flight with Gulf Air on the backbone of their fleet, the Airbus A320 to Dubai. As always at the end of the review I will share my final thoughts on the overall experience.

Consistently high standard from you Blake, thank you! Gulf Air I`ve not had occasion to fly with, but it looks decent enough. I remember back in the late 1970`s when Bahrain was a major stopover point on flights between Australia and the UK, with both BA and Qantas stopping in Singapore and Bahrain on this route.

Lovely views out of Bahrain Blake !! I flew with them from Sydney to Bahrain and onto Athens to work at the Olympic games on an A 340 and they were pretty good. You have jogged my memory about Gulf Air and I am sure some one will correct me but I have a feeling they were amongst the first airlines to off a sky nanny service if you were travelling with young children and they also allowed locals to bring a trained Falcon on board to fly somewhere but only in the Middle East. The plane ...not the bird!! Thanks mate...great review as always !!
Well I certainly had no idea about allowing birds on-board! I have just checked and you are absolutely correct, falcons are indeed allowed in the cabin.
Wow...brilliant review. Looks more of a TV program and not just a trip report by a vlogger.
I have flew by GF several time..they are average and way to go to catch up with their neighbouring rivals QA, EK, EY. Most of their aircrafts are narrow body and old. Saw few reviews of the new ones and they are good. Upgrades are in process and will take time till they are deployed on more routes.

Another great instalment! Watching this and the CX video I’d be surprised if CX weren’t the more popular airline on the route, although I guess the residents of BAH may be loyal to their carrier. Do EK compete on the route too or is it operated by FlyDubai?
All I can say is that the CX flight was almost empty but this one was maybe 80%full. Emirates do indeed operate the route using a 777.

I flew this route on Gulf Air in September 2019. I took a day trip from Dubai, flying DXB-BAH in the morning and BAH-DXB in the evening. I checked the registration of my aircraft, but I wasn't on the same one you were on. ;-) I flew to Bahrain on A9C-AN and back to Dubai on A9C-AM.
I pretty much agree with your perception of Gulf Air. It's a good airline; not great and not bad at all. I was also impressed to get a snack on the 1 hour flight. I didn't see much of the BAH airport, as I was lounge hopping.

Atleast bahrain airport is easy to transit unlike dubai its extremely hard to transit, but on 19th march New airport is opening ! But well done on the video I love it, I hope soon you'll try gulf air's long haul service,i guess they are best in regional because no airline in the middle on there narrow body aircraft offers an IFE, but soon the a321 are gonna get replaced by a321neo and A320 with there a320neo and a330 by their 787!
Personally never had an issue at Dubai myself and as I said in the review, the new terminal in Bahrain should be good. Thanks for watching.

A friend eh? We were not offered a choice on this flight but I think that your friend will be fine to request alcohol if flying long haul.
Nope it's not a dry airline, especially on long haul flights they offer different types of wines in economy!
Looks nice! I don't like the underseat box units (so annoying!) but other than that, it's quite impressive. - Red
Not a fan of those IFE boxes either but it didn’t have a huge impact on the experience.

Hey thanks for sharing ur trip with gulf air I’m flying with my family first time with gulf air from Frankfurt to pakistan can u plz tell me if u had see any playing area in Bahrain airport or any facilities for children
I did not see a children's play area during my visit however the new terminal which opens very shortly I believe may offer something.
It's a small airport with very limited facilities. I hope they have addressed all these in the new terminal due this year
Hello.. i just want to ask how is bahrain airport ? Im travelling from kuwait to manila via gulf air transit in bahrain.. im worried because i heard that the bahrain government will conduct quarantine procedure to those passenger in transit in bahrain?
I visited just at the start of the coronavirus outbreak and at the time there were no restrictions. Your best bet is to contact the airline to find out for sure.

There's something about those small, sealed cups of water that irritates me.
I have not really given the cups much thought myself to be honest.
I thought it seemed pretty decent but if a plane is dirt then i don’t find that acceptable and just bone idol laziness of course my opinion. Great review as always cheers 👍
Maybe I wasn't detailed enough about the cabin cleanliness. It wasn't filthy at all just looked like it had been a while since it had more than just a quick tidy. Little stains and marks around the cabin that caught my attention.

But blake, i had too many negatives to say about Gulf air.
1. I was charged 153€ for the cabin baggage. It was okayed by staff at checkin but later during boarding the flight they said its big, so have to pay 153€.
2. Talking of checkin, we were 10th person in line, it took almost 1 hour to checkin the luggage.
3. We were made to sit 2 hours in flight, it was delayed by 2 hours.
4. We missed the connection.
5. Although while booking ticket, we asked for Hindu veg meal. But in flight it was not available. On the connecting flight, i heard 3-4 people could not get veg meal.
6. Flight staff are ok, but not really helpful.
7. Raised concern with gulf air as complaint on email about luggage charge. But there was no response. I tried on Twitter too, but no response.
This was first time in gulf air, never again
