Thanks for the great video. I bought a used lens like this one that had obviously been dropped at one point. The filter ring was bent slightly, just enough to make it impossible to mount a filter. For $35 on Amazon I bought a great tool that allowed me to "unbend" the bent filter frame and then mount a good filter. However, the lens was still having problems focusing. After reading many comments on the internet I was able to partially free the focusing mechanism by simply turning the manual focus ring back and forth...many, many, times. Still, the best I could do was get the lens to focus from about 8 feet to infinity. Trying to go closer than 8 feet would just result in the focusing ring sticking in place...and then I'd have to "play" with it all over again to free it up. My untrained mind was telling me the lens needed some type of lubrication...which pointed me toward RUclips and eventually this video.
I should state that I have successfully repaired just a few older manual focus Nikon lenses. Even those relatively 'simple" lenses are a challenge enough for me. After watching this video I can easily say I will NOT be attempting any additional repairs on my 70-200mm lens. Nor will I be sending this lens anywhere for repair. The complexity demonstrated clearly tells me that any repair done to this lens will be expensive, so much so that I'd be better off just buying another good working used lens.
In the meanitme I'll just live with my current lens and feel lucky I was able to free it up enough to at least use it manually...from 8 feet to infinity. The VR on my lens is working...and that really helps. Thanks again for a great video.
