Ang Mo Kio Info:
Ang Mo Kio (Chinese: 宏茂桥; Tamil: ஆங் மோ கியோ), often abbreviated as AMK, is a planning area and residential town situated in the North-East Region of Singapore. Ang Mo Kio is the 3rd most populated planning area in the North-East Region and ranks 8th in terms of population in the country overall. The planning area is located at the south-western corner of the North-East Region, bordered by the planning areas of Yishun to the north, Sengkang to the north-east, Serangoon to the east, Bishan to the south and the Central Water Catchment to the west.
Prior to urbanization, the area, much like other rural districts in Singapore at the time, was largely undeveloped, is mainly used for agricultural purposes, with uninhabited plots of land usually covered in dense secondary forest or swamps. Ang Mo Kio was subsequently redeveloped by the Housing and Development Board in 1973 as their seventh satellite town and the first to be built in metric dimensions, being fully completed by 1980. The first three town councils in the country were established in Ang Mo Kio in 1986, as part of a pilot project to better serve residents of HDB new towns. The concept eventually became adopted under the Town Council Act of 1988 which today, remains as the second-level of administration in Singapore.
The large commercialization of the Ang Mo Kio throughout mid-1970s and 1980s also saw the rise of neighborhood startup businesses that remain prominent throughout Ang Mo Kio Town Centre today. One in particular eventually became one of Singapore's largest supermarket chains, Sheng Siong.
Ang Mo Kio today, much like its neighbouring towns, is largely urbanized, with little to no trace of its original ecology. However, parks are still prevalent in the town as part of the country's green initiative. Said parks include Ang Mo Kio Town Garden East and Ang Mo Kio Town Garden West. Although not technically located within Ang Mo Kio itself, Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park in the adjacent town of Bishan was reopened in 2012 to serve residents of both towns. The park itself straddles along the Ang Mo Kio-Bishan boundary, making it easily accessible from Ang Mo Kio.

Tbh, I really miss Singapore for real, I never stopped visiting Singapore almost every year until this covid pandemic. It's a part of my childhood and it's almost a part of my life,a really huge dent on my life. Every night that hitted on my mind is angmokio, the night view of Broadway plaza hits differently, its not that angmokio is a spectacular place, but it's spectacular in a different way. It had brought me a smile on my face. But mainly, I have to thank my aunt and uncle for bringing me a profound memory. Love yall and also producer for bringing me back to angmokio once I watch this vlog
Great start 😊
I love pictures on the road 😊
Thanks GW 😊 glad to see your channel is growing big
@@DiscoveryWalkingToursTV Thank you! 😊
Come to us 😊
We have many new interesting videos 😊
Your camera vision, feels like me walking or cycling. Smooth capture in all your videos. Your patience and control on the cycle is appreciated and perfect.
Glad you enjoyed it Murali 😊
When I was in Secondary School, I made many attempts to walk from Ang Mo Kio back to my home in Hougang Avenue 3 but have somehow always failed. I think it's a mental thing, cause I'm sure I can do it today without any problem. Thanks again for a great walk, Alan! Always nice to walk with you.
Sounds like this area holds many childhood memories for you. My aunt used to stay in amk when I was much much younger and almost every weekend I will be here. Glad to see that the old shop houses are still there, with the occasional modern mall added to the mix.
Hi fellow Discoverers. This is Alan from Discovery Walking Tours TV. Do subscribe and ring the bell if you are keen to see more of Singapore. I used binaural microphones to record the environmental sounds. So if you have a pair of headphones, do use them, it will be quite an immersive experience 😀
If you notice any interesting points in the video or want to ask about something that was caught on camera, comment with a time stamp (eg 00:01) and I will be sure to check it out. I am also interested to know where you are from 😄 so drop a comment below and say hi!

This video really brings back my recent memories. I lived 2 years in Ang Mo Kio during my expat period in SG. AMK Hub & those hawkers food are quite my favorite places to go for dine in. I wish i could move to Singapore again & stay there. Thank you!
Happy to hear from you Arief and thanks for sharing your story 😊 you still remember your favourite meal or hawker stall at Ang Mo Kio?
@@DiscoveryWalkingToursTV Yes of course! it was Mr. Teh Tarik Hawker Stall behind/beside the broadway plaza if im not mistaken. Would love to come back again if i had the chance!
@@ariefrudyanto2392 haha. I'm sure Mr Teh Tarik would be happy to know that. He's got a few coffeeshops all over Singapore. Hope you have a chance to come back to visit Singapore. Where you currently at?
Now I have returned to my home country, Indonesia. At that time lived in the condo on Ang Mo Kio Avenue 8. Very close to MRT, AMK Hub, Hawker Stall, Fairprice, and everything you name it. It was nice to see this video as i imagining i was the one who strolling around the hood back then 😊
Stayed in Ang mo kio twice in the last few years i loved it there thanks for this.
Glad you have fond memories of Ang Mo Kio. As a children, I used to visit this neighbourhood (30 years ago) almost every other weekend as my relatives stayed in the area. It has changed so much since those days. Where are you moved to now?
Not a resident of SG but i stay in Ang mo kio when i visit.
That's interesting to hear =) It is definitely an interesting place to stay and is as authentic as it gets for a "heartland". Ang Mo Kio will be experiencing alot of changes in the coming decade. The cross line mrt line will pass by this neighbourhood and will be another desirable place to stay
I remember the bus terminal of Ang Mo Kio, quite large
i was there back in 2010, its like walking back to my memories
Thanks for sharing VS and happy to have brought back some memories for you 😊
Nice video Alan! Love this kind of outdoor videos! Can i request you to do a walk at Punggol Waterway Point and waterway park? :)
That's a good idea. Will do some more neighbourhood filming at the end of the month. Currently away so once I'm back I will get to work 😁
Discovery Walking Tours TV Alright, thank you! Appreciate it Alan :)
This is one of your best videos so far. It shows a lot of details of Singapore way of life in a typical heartland neighborhood, which is how most Singaporeans live. Very comprehensive coverage of different shops, mall, hawker food and even how Singaporeans dress. What is the name of the mall? I didn't think there was one so big there before. Excellent job, thanks.
Thanks John. Glad to hear from you again 😊 I am surprised to see there is demand in watching everyday life in our housing estates. Once I'm back I can film a bit more of the populated estates
john friend The mall at the start is Ang Mo Kio hub. Ang Mo Kio town centre has changed so much since its inception. Looking at pictures of it from the past it looks almost unrecognisable compared to what it looks like today. The large shopping centre (AMK Hub) sits on part the old bus interchange and Blk 701 which used to house a shopping emporium.
Back in secondary school, Ang Mo Kio is often featured in our books. Today, I get to watch Ang Mo Kio Walking Tours haha.. Looks fun! Thanks for sharing! Thumbs up!
Haha 😅 is this estate that "famous"? How is this estate portrayed in your textbooks?
@@DiscoveryWalkingToursTV They state the road name from Singapore and that's it haha. It's not really in out textbook but in books from Singapore's author that somehow made its way to us students back then.
@@kazartlab2458 that is very fascinating. What other neighbourhoods do you remember from your textbooks/books? Maybe I can choose to film those first 😁
@@DiscoveryWalkingToursTV Oh I think Ang Mo Kio is the only one that was featured.
@@kazartlab2458 😁 then I'm sure the people living in Ang Mo Kio will be happy to know their district is famous 😁
Thanks for showing a bigger housing area; so many shops 👍🏻😊
Yeah it's pretty busy during the weekend mornings 😊 hopefully I get a chance to film some estates in the North West soon
Ang Mo Kio bus interchange, Ang Mo kio center, Ang Mo Kio MRT station ... all these ..So familiar to me.. Ang Mo Kio Ave.6 St 61... block 625... Miss all these places so much..
It's been awhile since I last visited Ang Mo Kio. Maybe can take a look this weekend to see how things are like
Remember there was a book store that rent books at Ang Mo Kio market.. Use to rent books there.
@@phiklangbong2148 Didn't really have a chance to visit Ang Mo Kio central when I was younger. More familiar with Clementi and Holland Village. But yes! I used to enjoy visiting those 2nd hand bookstores to read
One request Alan. Can you please cover the Marymount and Thomson area. There was a Flora/Nursery at bus stop B51051. Starting from there, a ride on Jalan Pemimpin, covering the industrial buildings at Pemipin drive, joining the Marymount road and then riding through the Shunfu Road, Shunfu Market, the temple nearby, then through the Sin Ming road travelling on the Upper Thomson Road and covering Thomson Plaza. Sorry, my request may be specific. I worked and stayed there for 3 years. Those times, Marymount MRT was not constructed and no buses in Shunfu Road. I liked Shunfu because of its calmness and it gave me some sort of peace. Again, I appreciate all your works and your passion. Thank You for bringing the feel of me being there through your camera vision.
Thanks for the detailed request. Currently the Marymount and Thomson area are under heavy construction. There are 2 major projects running in the area: Thompson East Coast MRT line and the North-South Expressway. Riding in the area would be challenging. Once the construction is done I will definitely visit the place
@@DiscoveryWalkingToursTV Thank You for the reply. Its all your time and convenience. Let the constructions complete. There will be a better view and pedestrian path then. 👍🏽
@@muralidharan5088 I used to work in the Thompson area where all the shophouses are. I too am looking forward when everything is ready 😊
@@DiscoveryWalkingToursTV Nice to know that you too worked in that area. Waiting for your cycling and walking tour there once the things settle.
And the pepper lunch had already open about many weeks ago after the upgrade
Thanks for sharing some info about the place 😄
Another crowdy but good place or district to live
It's a popular choice amongst Singaporeans 🇸🇬😊
Have been very fascinated about the history of this place, kinda sad to see the town centre has went through so much change since the commercial hdb blocks in the town centre were completed in around 1979. Blk 701 where oriental emporium used to be, the old fountain, and the old bus interchange have been demolished to make way for amk hub and the new integrated bus interchange at amk hub. Then now there are new developments to fill in the empty plots of land like condominiums, hdb flats next to 51@amk, and a new multi storey carpark added next to Blk 712 in around 1988. Then the hdb commercial buildings and old cinemas have seen many tenants move in and out, while some of the cinemas have been refurbished heavily or demolished. Then the residential flats have all undergone upgrading, and the VIP viewing deck at Blk 710 which queen Elizabeth II visited in 1989 is now out of bounds to the public and is closed.
Happy to see you share all these details of the past. I only have passing memories of Ang Mo Kio in the 1980s where I used to visit a relative almost every other weekend. From my perspective, the big change happened when AMK hub was built. After that the place started to become alot more lively
Discovery Walking Tours TV I see, I was only born in the 2000s so I never got to witness much of these changes. It was through comparing old photographs, reading online and newspaper articles, as well as databases where I got to know all of these. Did your relative live within the Town centre?
They moved to another part of Singapore in the 90s so there hasn't been a real need to visit Ang Mo Kio since then.
Discovery Walking Tours TV oh I meant back in the 1980s did they live within the Town centre or another part of amk? I'm very fascinated by the Town centre's history
@@elevatorfilmersg I believed they used to live in Blk 302 Ang Mo Kio St 31 so its to the south of AMK town centre.
My granddaughter and I always eat at Subway.....we live at ANG MO KIO GREEN HEIGHTS....
Oh nice. There is a park between you and Ang Mo Kio Central? Sounds like a nice quiet walk to get the AMK 😊
👍🏼
Ang mo kio park pleasee, my last visit was at 2012
I try 🙏 not on my list at this time but I try 😅
Before pandemic :)
How about Toa Payoh
I did a recording of Toa Payoh a couple of months back. It's in my "Singapore Neighbourhood" playlist. You can check it out there
I used to live there, and well I think I saw myself
🤣 Are you serious? That is kind of "interesting". I once accidentally filmed my father 🤣 we walked past each other and we didn't even notice. So yes it does happen 😊
