  • The Eagles are an American rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1971 by Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Bernie Leadon, and Randy Meisner. With five number-one singles, six Grammy Awards, five American Music Awards, and six number-one albums, the Eagles were one of the most successful musical acts of the 1970s. Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975) album is one of the best-selling albums in history, with over 38 million copies sold as of 2020.
The band's music incorporates elements of rock, country, and folk music, and they are known for their harmonious vocals and memorable songwriting. Some of their most popular songs include "Take It Easy," "Hotel California," "Desperado," "Life in the Fast Lane," and "Take It to the Limit."
The Eagles disbanded in 1980 but reunited in 1994 for the album "Hell Freezes Over," a mix of live and new studio tracks. They have toured intermittently since then and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998. The lineup changed several times over the years, with the deaths of Glenn Frey in 2016 and earlier departures of other founding members. Despite these changes, the Eagles have continued to be a popular live act.
Their influence on rock and popular music has been significant, with their sound defining a major part of the 1970s music scene. They have also been the subject of criticism, particularly from those who find their sound too polished or lacking in authenticity, but their widespread popularity and record sales speak to their enduring appeal.
