Just starting out in documentary filmmaking but don’t have any experience? I really enjoyed this long conversation with Mark Bone where I got to pick his brain on what advice he’d give to new filmmakers just beginning their career. Lots of great tips here, thanks Mark!

Tons of advice here from a RUclips powerhouse - let me know what tips from our special guest resonated the most!
The fives will become my approach! Just releasing films and not getting caught in analysis paralysis seems important.
"filmmakers finish films"
I've got quite a few passion projects that I didn't finish because the shoot didn't go well and I was afraid to make a crappy film. This quote is definitely a painful one for me
@Luc and @Mark could you share some websites or places where I can go and actually watch, other than blockbuster movies, short films, documentaries, watch filmmaker tell all kinds of stories? I have been watching most if not all of your videos and have the urge to tell stories myself but not very sure where I can watch and learn from other people's work? Thank you very much in advance!
I have a few years of filmmaking and editing experience. I do my wife's music videos, but as far as actually doing "professionally paid" work I have not gotten myself to that point but want to. I've been paid for some small jobs here and there but never built the confidence to take the plunge and offer my work professionally. Doc style has always been most intriguing to me.
Why are you wearing hats?
Embarrassed to admit I enrolled in AOD and never even logged in. My current day to day career is so time consuming that I shelved it. Chasing dreams after reaching peak adulthood is freaking hard😂
haha, I hear ya...adulting is the worst.
Having you both in the same screen. Man, that's awesome. Thank you guys.
Crasftmen and gentlemen both! This is a wonderful collaboration.
This was so fun Luc! Thanks for letting me coming by my office
Any time. I like what I’ve done with the place!
Needed this, thanks guys!
the collab we never saw coming but always needed.
7:58 - Waiting for permission to do what you're good at and what you love is one of the worst traps of filmmaking. I know I should know better, but I find myself getting stuck here over and over again. Waiting for permission from my employer or a sponsor for a green light holds me back all the time and when I can ignore that and just work is always when I find I can make better work. People only ever ask you for things they've already seen you do before.
Love this. So cool. So helpful!
You two are my inspiration. Filmmaking is a side hustle for now but I want to make it my career choice and both of you guys channels popped up recently so I’ll dive into them for guidance. Thank you so much guys! Hope I get to look back and thank you guys for being that spark that started my journey and one day get t know y’all 🙏🏾❤️
Awesome video guys !
absolutely great video!
Thanks guys makes alot of sense
Great advice. Thanks.
Great advice!
Dude this was an excellent episode. I can feel the passion of your topics and understanding of each others stories. 10/10
great video! love hearing about the process
The one day film idea is brilliant.
Thank you!
OMG!! My two favourite doc teachers on one screen!!! Super happy to see the two of you together. The Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert for the other side of the camera.
Edit: as an aside .. I went to South America right out of high school to do humanitarian work with an org from Toronto, expedition pack and camera bag .. came back to Canada wanting to be the next Eddie Adams.
Thanks! Have you applied to the Eddie Adam’s workshop?
@@LucForsyth would love to but life just got a little more complicated.
what an amazing time listening to you guys! Cheers from Costa Rica!
I liked that 5-5-5 deal (reminiscent of Pizza Hut). 5 minute drive, 5 minute doc, within 5 weeks. Creates some really good boundaries to work within. And the idea of just finishing docs/films is helpful and important. Thank you so much Luc & Mark!
Big thanks to you both. So much fantastic advice. I had to pause video multiple times to add to my notes.
IMO you bounced of each other amplifying the points. An example of synergy where the whole is greater than a sum of the parts!
Stoked to see both of you in this video, I’ve learned a lot from both, hope to see more of this duet
Astonishing video , this help me a lot .
A lot of really good information too.
Great interview. I’ve learned so much from Mark as a AOD student. Just found your channel subbed.
I haven't even started this video yet and I already know this will be amazing! Love seeing two of my favorite RUclipsrs collab
Awesome to learn from two of my favorite documentarians! (And great to hear Mark’s origin story, too.)
I’m so brand new to this documentary world I haven’t even seen this guy show up in my feed yet…. Glad I could be introduced to him thru you! Really psyched about this community!
I introduced you to mark?? Wild!
I feel so many parallels in our paths to becoming what we love doing - becoming a documentary filmmaker using our talents to tell meaningful stories.
Super thank you for the valuable advice 🙌. Awesome collab
Hoping to take the AOD class soon. 🙏
So many nuggets of Gold in this video. I learned a ton from you guys during this. Thanks for so much for sharing.
All if this is so useful. It can also relate to other artists and creators as well. Alot of these points reminded me of making music as well. I watch your stuff all the time and got into making film/video a couple of years ago. I've watch this twice and will be coming back with my note pad. Sage advice here. I've never heard of Mark but will definitely check him out. Thanks for this video man!
You guys are the best... Some of the best content on RUclips for filmmakers imo. Thank you for being great!
This was awesome. Thanks very much! Need to watch this 100 times.
this was incredible advice coming from my 2 favorite doc filmmakers on this platform!
TRUTH BOMBS. It’s been years since I’ve finished my own film. YEARS. And I’ve be n extremely disappointed in myself as of late. I do fantastic work but it’s always as crew (I’m a 1st AC, and Cam Op), but I have this crazy fear to commit to my own thing because I’m scared people will be surprised that I’m not as good as they thought. Because all the work I’m attached to is insanely good, because I work with talented crews…
I really needed to hear this and I’ve been making some big changes. Definitely going to finish some sorts this year. Hopefully before summer.
I've been working on my first project for weeks and I have some footage but I feel like I'm working in the dark, it's been difficult but these videos have been beyond helpful. Thanks Luc
Another great video. The act of just posting is something I think is so hard as a young film student. Knowing what you make now is going to be shit can be paralyzing, but was happy this week to break through that fear and post my first video. Excited to keep improving.
My god this is basically an open masterclass! Thank you guys, you are legit!!!
No way!! 😂😂 this video has me HYPE Luc 🔥🔥
This is such eyes opening, no more excuses 😮
You’ve been talking about Mark for a really long time. Really enjoyed watching the pair of you. Great video 👏👏
Wow, how strange but cool - so happy to see you guys in the same frame 👏
This is very refreshing to hear. Not just the nods to Ontario’s late HS comms programs. But also the career shift touch points and just generally getting into the right headspace and underway, rather than creating barriers for oneself. Thank you for sharing guys.
Amazing video! Thanks!
You’re very welcome Luis!
Amazing!! Mark is great! Got to meet him and Michael at the TIFF Lightbox a few months ago. AoD is amazing!! Love both of your advice. Completing your first film is definitely the hardest part I would say. For me, I have to make a film that I would actually be interested in watching. Almost finished with my first. Pretty pumped! Thanks Luc. Hope you are doing well!
Actually Luc, your 46 min epic packing video is one of my favs! I've never had to pack gear for air travel, but the video inspired me to go buy a cart like the one you have, saved myself dozens of trips back and forth from set to truck!
Really good advice. Thank you 🙏
My pleasure!
This collaboration is excellent! Kim from AOD sent me here, and glad I came across this
man, this is money!!! so valuable!
The rapport between Luc and Mark evolved during the course of this video. They were vibing hard at the end. Very cool video ... inspirational and educational.
I was at a Missions conference a few weeks ago and I felt this overwhelming desire to tell the stories of these missionaries and humanitarians...Japan, Thailand, Brazil, Romania, Vanuatu, Mexico...and many more. Not long after I discovered your channel and have been soaking up as much info as possible, and I'm looking to just start shooting small documentary work locally to build up my skillset before I attempt to travel.
Anyway, I am terrified but excited and I love all the information from your channel!
Soooooo good to see you both!!!! Amazing inspiration from you guys :)
Thanks, was super fun!
Yo, been waiting for this collab! So much great stuff you both be offering up! 👏🏼⚡️🙌🏼
Nice, more to come im sure! 😉
GREAT ADVICE
Such a much need watch! Thanks for sharing and all of the gems that you both dropped in this talk!
No problem, was a great chat for me as well
Great advice! I did already get to the conclusion that in order to make the movies I really, really want to do (fantasy adaptations of my favourite indie authors), I need to make and learn on movies that I can actually make (one is about my husband’s martial arts story, the other about renovating a 100yo courthouse we bought last year), I kept trying to make at least the short films squeezed in between fantasy - which turned out to be quite hard, finding a concept that works well on no-budget level. But I never thought about short documentaries! It really set me on fire, thinking of all the interesting little topics that are all around me, and I could make a cute little short about them.
I'm so happy to find your channel. Your content is so affirming and informative! Great collab; they just got a new subscriber!
Thanks Angel, glad to have you!
This was a colab that needed to happen, I love it.
💯
the never share and artist bit was part of this that resonated most. Les 'survivor man' stroud had a similar story of filming really bad at first but posting anyways to where he is today. I always remind the perfectionist in me to just go for it. Post it
Awesome video and came at the perfect time as I've been stuck in a bit of a creative rut. My biggest hurdle has always been starting a project, and then finishing what I start. I tend to dwell on a project and everything around it without ever starting it. There's a great passage from the book 'Lessons with Kiarostami' by the amazing Abbas Kiarostami (would highly recommend reading this book) where he describes how the 'professional' filmmakers who attended his workshops remained glued to their seats while the non-professionals (in this case, a local sandwich shop owner) were immediately out making films. I'm going to follow your advice and make 3 documentary shorts in my area. Thanks!
You guys narrowed down some of my concepts of doc making into bite sized pieces that gave me a better understanding and more clarity around how I need to start my documentary career...whatever that may look like. I was so surprised when I saw that you and Mark were sitting down together. Just two days ago I thought to myself, "do Luc and Mark know each other?" And, "wouldn't it be cool if they did a video together." And now you have. Thank you.
what an awesome collab!
Thanks john, enjoyed it myself!
Yeah! as a AOD student and Luc follower, this combo for me is the best ever! saluti dalla Svizzera italiana :)
YES!!! fantastic to see you both in the same video. very helpful inspirational content too :)
Thanks mark!
what a crazy collab love both creators
And we love you!
you guys are awesommmmmmmmmmmmme
Incredible!!! Haha. Love this collab!
Thanks Matthew!
Yessss!!!! Mark Bone and Luc are my "go to" channels! I didn't realize I've been waiting on this without realizing!
Thanks darrin, was super fun for me!
Ha! Just watched this now. A bit like Mark I started with stop motion as a kid, I was 3D artist most recently (ad agency AD for a bit before that), now I’m just starting a couple of doc projects while “between jobs”. I’m in TO as well. This was super cool.
Kim from AOD sent me here 😁 commenting before watching. No doubt it will be a great video!
Great video, Lucas! Muy inspirador.
Gracias Chuck, como vas in Coyoacán? Sigue el podcast?
finally! I am sooooo goood daaaamn impressed to finally see you guys together🙏 finally🙏👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Haha, thanks man!
I caught Marks film on the London premiere. It was awesome I just have to say. He's one of the people who has peaked my interest into documentary filmmaking.
Cheers so much all fantastic simple advice that is the norm however I believe the first thing one should do is find your look/ style/colours/light natural and artificial that you are happy with and then build from that it's what I'm going to do 😊❤
Oh snap! haven’t watched yet but I know it’ll be fire content 🔥
I definitely enjoyed it!
WHAAAAAAT!!!! How exciting is that!! You are two of my most followed filmmakers and I am so happy to see both of you together!!! INSANE! You both are such inspirational!!
Thanks, appreciate that. Was a great chat!
Two of my favorite worlds collide and make one great video, full of inspiration.
Great info and pace. More of this! greets from Mexico.
PS: Would love to watch those first movies!
Gracias Alfredo! Algún día, tal vez…
I know it's a good video when it has me genuinely smiling throughout. Such a great unexpected collab from two of my faves. Didn't mind the length at all. It's great to just hear you guys talking freely about your experiences. The biggest things that resonated for me are to keep my first project(s) accessible and reduce the hurdles, especially not trying to make the film with people who don't want to or aren't able to tell their story. That's hard. But as I've been shooting, I'm learning it's so true!
Awesome, we were worried it was a bit long, bordering on podcast length, but was just too much fun!
Finally, this is epic. Just saw the AOD logo and two chairs at the 4 seconds mark and i had to type this first!!....Hope to see more of this 😃🔥🔥🔥
Yeah I figured people would catch on quick! Stay tuned, that’s all I’ll say for now!
Again, I'm super happy that you kept posting videos despite of only having a few hundred of views on the first ones ! Can't wait to see your next videos !
Thanks! Yeah the start of RUclips is pretty painful for sure…
This was a great video. I been following Mark for a couple years now. Caught his stuff with Peter McKinnon too. Always dropping so much wisdom.
Couldn’t agree more!
I’m 70 and just retired from ranch and farm sales. When I started in the business there were no “videographers” out in ranch country where I live. So…I bought a Nikon D90 and started making my own ranch/farm marketing videos. I had been a newspaper photographer back in the days of B&W so I also took all my own photos. We had to hire helicopters and remove the doors to get photos and videos of larger ranches. Then came GoPro cameras and I hired a guy who used a powered glider and we duct-taped a camera on a mount on each of his knees. We called them our “seasick videos” and I edited them in iMovie. Then came my Lumix cameras (Gh3-Gh6) and a DJI Magic 2 Pro. And Final Cut Pro. Now that I am retired I hope to use my equipment for anything but real estate marketing videos. That market is overpopulated and crazy. I am thinking of documenting the people who raise our food. I love farmers and ranchers and the work they do is hard and technical. Sorry to write War and Peace….I just wanted to say how much I value your content. Jim is Oregon
This is one of the channels that gave me the courage to start my RUclips channel 9 months ago about self development. Now I have 1,707 subs and > 1k hours of watch time. I know it’s not comparable with others but I’m still proud I started because I’ve been learning so many lessons that I could haven’t learned without getting started in the 1st place.
This is really good and the talking style is on point.
Feedback for some of your other videos, I think more b-roll will improve the viewing experience and also drive your points in a better way.
Thanks!
the two best documentary filmmakers!
🤗
Hopefully this brings more traffic to your channel, I love to see you both together.
Thanks, was a lot of fun…there *may* be more to come 😉
@@LucForsyth 💯there must be more!
Collaboration of the century!
Bone / Forsyth 2024?
The colab I didn’t know I needed 🔥🔥 hopefully you guys got plans to work on a project together 🔥🔥🔥
I can neither confirm not deny…
@@LucForsyth I got a documentary to shoot in Florida next month I’m excited definitely taking these things into consideration 💪🏼
My absolute dream combo of documentary filmmakers!!!
Haha, thanks man, it was a ton of fun!
@@LucForsyth awesome! Would like to become a doc filmmaker, too, but three kids and a house to pay…
Greetings from Germany
Yo! Good stuff! It's motivating and inspiring to see "big" creators still open to collab and meet up with younger channels. I bet a year ago you never would have thought someday you'd be hanging out with Mark in his office and communicating as a peer RUclips creator. Great job!
Yeah, this RUclips trip has been full of surprises! Though I think it’s probably less hard to connect with others than you might think if they can see you’re taking it seriously and putting thoughtful stuff out into the world. Mark actually made first contact with me a while ago because of a video that came to his attention - What doesn’t work is bombarding them with DMs asking for exposure!
@@LucForsyth That felt personal. 😂... Did I do that? I don't think I've ever done that.
For sure! I discovered your channel very early on and have been a big fan. Your real world experience and consistency with delivery sound advice has been a huge help for me. Keep it up!
Great video of 2 generous icons in documentary, and documentary filmmaking. Two big inspirations of mine when it comes to documentary and/or short movies - Director Akim K.
Thanks Adam, appreciate that
some dense info in 36mins, currently waiting for better scripts, and more BTS (documentary opportunities).
Not sure I understand, sorry!
THE BEST COMBO
🍔🍟
I didn't know who Mark is until this video ❤
Awww. Guy love!
The way Canadian Filmakers/Content Creators support each other is amazing to me. It seems like most channels in this genre are Canadians. You guys seem to really back each other like a community. I h8 to say this but in my experience there seems to be a lack of this in the U.S.
Idk Maybe its just me...
Took your advice and started small and local. Yesterday, shot my first mini doc - an artisan who does pottery. 10 mins from the house. #checkingallboxes lol
Amazing man, great to hear!
Awesome!!!
👊🏻
