That's an awesome vehicle. First rule of 4x4 - keep your line straight perpendicular to the incline, and NO braking, feet off the brakes. Let the engine, and gearbox do the braking for you. That Italian port official looked just like Dan, for a moment I thought it was him 🙂

Well, long story short, we've been adventuring our lovely BC coast on our own sailboat since then. They say, our incarnation on this tiny planet is all about experiences. we have lived very similar lives i did vans for a decade. then boats for a decade. then RVs / Truck campers for decade then i bought a property and now i have my trucks in the backyard of my property. ended up selling my boat minus the kayak. i realized after a decade of boat life i love the land coast lines the best. that's the intersection of where life is best imo. I'm located in SF bay area California now. followed you guys since prob 2017ish. would be awesome to meet one day. i have great RV spots in cali.
This is a really cool twist! Just a little info from my side: They say you should not rest your hand on the shifter as the pressure transfers unnecessary stress to the gearbox. I don´t really know how much importance it has especially with a Landy transmission. But that is what my driving instructor told me 30 years ago. I have driven regular manual cars here in Germany ever since and never had issues with the gearboxes. Cheers to you and the new addition!
It's quite clear that fitting a couch into that Land Rover might be a bit of a challenge. I´d say neigh impossible! Good choice! As you navigate the journey of restoring Uma, I genuinely hope that her transformation is progressing smoothly, and that the Land Rover becomes a vessel for not only exciting adventures, but also for cherished memories and heartfelt moments.
Land Rovers. Making mechanics out of drivers for 75 years. I've had two, never again. I asked to be sectioned after buying the second one. As boat owners, you're going to love how they mated so much steel and aluminium together. The doors don't take long to fall off. That's not a joke. Steel bolts don't play well with aluminium hinges. And the back door is made of sugar. Like that driving position? Wait until the temperature drops and the cool breeze comes whistling through. Should've stuck with the Panda. At least if it was a 4x4 version. Dumps all over a Defender on 99.99% of any off-/bad-road driving you'll do in Europe. And they're incredible on ice and snow. There's a reason why the Italian alps are jammers with them. If you insist on sleeping inside a vehicle, you can get them with fold flat front seats, so you have two full length beds. And put your stuff on the roof in a lockable roof box. Or with the money you save on purchase price, road tax, fuel, tyres, maintenance, recovery, chiropractors, etc versus the Defender, you could stay in 5 star hotels. Or buy the best tent and camping gear money can buy. It would make for better, more unique content too I reckon. Anyway, you live and learn. Have fun!

Plus they are regarded as relatively petrol hungry - we don't have massively subsidised petrol like the US - we pay the real price. Also, since the distances are by and large, much less than in the US, it works out more economic to drive manual.

Automatics are boring, and yet car makers in the U.S. aren't even offering manuals in most models anymore. : ( (Oh and you're right about the gas consumption; my Subaru gets terrible mileage around town).
Great choice of car. I camped with the predecessor to the Defender for over 20 years. It was a Series 3 Landrover with the same wheel base. Perfect for off road camping. Have fun. ATB regards from the UK
As a former resident of Solihull area, may I suggest that a Land Rover is unique and may not want the universal term of 'truck'. Original design, promoted by the GWP or Jeep, goes back to the last 1940's. The design concepts of the Land Rover, In all its variants, did not change, other than suspension upgrades and engine variants, until production stooped a few years ago. Many of us have suggested that the LR is probably the most sustainable transport design ever conceived. Your choice for an adventure/mobile home has to be congratulated. Your journey with your Landy has only just started!
Great news about Uma, I went through with my boat in the '90's, the same as what you are going through with Uma now. I used about 50 gallons of west system epoxy and Biax. Now you can go on Safari in your Land Rover to Africa, that would be my dream for me:-)!!!!
We're not planning to do much to the truck any time soon. We really just need a bed, which it has. We'll live in it for awhile before make any major changes to it.

Perfect Choice. Congratulations! The advantage of the close to the door seating position is that you can easily lean out of the window to observe your left front wheel. This is useful when doing offroad.
It is a big change, and good that you can roll with the possibilities, everything does not need to be stunning and epic. Down to Earth can be an amazing show.
The truck is in great shape. No need to "rebuild" anything really. We'll build a little something in the back eventually. But it's such a small space it won't take nearly as long as a full boat.

As a Brit I always like seeing our Defenders taking on the world. One thing to investigate is the locking differential. It will help on loose and steep terrain. And having been in the army reserve being forced to live in the back of a 110 on military exercises I think you are [expletive deleted] crazy to take this route but I can't wait to see how you get on. If you make it to the UK you should try to make it to our area in Cumbria to drive through the Lake District. You now have the perfect vehicle for it.
🤣 So TRUE!! Dan will need to put that trailer hitch back on so they can tow their “support trailer”; every Land Rover needs a trailer FILLED with spare parts, tools and two spare tires! Just to stay real: after a month of driving around in this beautiful thing you will have consumed as much diesel as you yould have on Uma for the last 7 years had it been diesel powered. Enjoy the ride!

As a Brit whose been around Landies for a long time.... (Got a 110 Hi-Cap) She'll take you anywhere you need to go. Few things to remember. If there's no oil under it, it means there's no oil in it. If you're not getting wet inside, it's not raining outside. If it's not fallen off... It's not broken. Happy trails!
Have to say I am kind of sorry to see you going this route. I would imagine you have calculated the impact an overlanding audience can add to your subscriber base or you would not be doing it,, but I hate to see one of the top 3 or 4 sailing channels becoming dual fan base models. I hope it works for you. I have really enjoyed your sailing and boat build videos.
Honestly, that's not how we make decisions. Of course we're always glad to hear when people enjoy our videos, but "growing our audience" is never a goal we journey towards. Fur us, that's just the side effect of creating good videos about things we're passionate about. We only pursue things we're interested in and passionate about and then do our best to make good content around what we're already doing.
Interesting, I guess I just assumed you treated this like a career/job and tried to maximize the return on your hard work. You are both so incrediby talented in your videography, poise and genuineness in front of the camera. I just loved the fact that you went beyond the warm Crribbean island hopping stuff that eveyone does and ventured into the higher lattitudes to give us a glimpse of that and doing it with an electric boat. I guess I was selfish for that uniqueness that I was concerned that ovelanding seems so flooded an ordinary on the youtube platform these days. nice to see that you have a good taste in cars ! land rover is really good platform for offroad camper !! i still recommend that you get a recovery winch for sticky situations, it could be permanently mounted either to the front or back, or it could be removable and able to pull from all directions 👍
Best comment here so far! The number of times a winch is needed will become uncountable very quickly. The rule in off-roading (even very light off-roading), “as soon as you leave the pavement, somebody needs a winch”! If that’s you, and it only happens once, that winch is paid for! Don’t underweight it either; whatever your budget is, get the highest weight rating available, and then buy the winch 2 steps above that…. you’ll never have more winch than you need, but you’ll frequently not have enough.
@@ricktaylor14001 i think 10-12 k lbs winch is going to be enough for this car. i have one 12k winch in a platform and it could be carried to pull from every directions, only problem with this is that with the platform its 60+ kg so it needs 2 people for comfortable moving. but you are correct, dont buy something which should be enough and dont go offroading with a hope that i dont probably need winch😆
Psst... it's called a tow ball. And... owners normally refer to their Landrovers as a "Landy" 😉 And... they're never referred to as "trucks" (unless you're from the US) - they're 4 wheel drives. Keep an eye on the coolant. Landy's are notorious for having hissy fits in the heat!
Hi guys, I'm sure you 2 checked weather forecast before to camp in that spot that could be very dangerous. Those kinds of rivers are able to go from almost 0 to meters deep of very fast running and roaring water in minutes if a storm pours a lot of rain over the mountains even not close to you. Anyway, one more great video !!!
@@SailingUma I'm Italian and I know pretty well how summer weather on the northern "Appennini" could be unpredictable in the summer. I know also pretty well how "not perfect" is the warning system for a damed rivers. At least once a year rescue teams needs to save people camping in locations like that ☹️ and always in the spring/summer time. Anyway, happy you guys feel safe 🙂🙂

At least you CAN work on your own. I think you see Defender owners working on their cars so much because they CAN be fixed, as opposed to just driving it to the shop because you can't fix anything yourself.
The older Land Rovers like the one I used to have, had a crash box. That meant thatyouI had to double clutch to shift from first into second gears. Not easy until you get the knack. When my wife took her driver's test on it in Nova Scotia, the inspector watched her double clutch once and told her on the spot that she'd passed her test without going any further.
Hi Dan & K, Vehicle Roadtrip tip: I have done many many thousands of miles with vehicle sleeping, in multiple types of vehicles. In North America these camping stops in all types of places are now frequently termed "boondocking". Social media has such groups. Often ruining previously great places to stop by over popularizing them. TIP: For privacy, and heat / sun blocking (also cold insulation) of the non- windshield windows I tried many things. What works best for me is actually, simply, modified cardboard. Mine are cut-to fit inserts. Although your new rig looks like there' are no window ledges on which to insert. . But here's the first 'trick'. Paint one side black, and one side white. The black should be not high gloss, nor flat. If you do this well, when it's in your window, from the outside it will look like tinted window glass, and prying eyes are often fooled. You cannot afford indentation 'scratches' which betray the cardboard composition. The white side goes inward at night for brightness and that illusion of space. But during a hot day, you can flip it (or change swap port and starboard panels) to not absorb (reflect) the sun. And with your rig being white painted, it also compliments this. 👁️🌅👁️ And then I discovered a source material box made from double layer corrugated cardboard! Twice the sun insulation. Stout. And I'm so jazzed about it that I've taken to making my own double layer inserts, using either glue, or carpet tape. To cut these, to weird window shapes, use an 8 1/2x 11 sheet of paper to get the curves as a template to transfer, and use a power jigsaw instead of the usual boxknife. Sanding block for the rough edges. With your new rig, these cardboard panels might need to be 1-2" larger than the windows, with hanging holes drilled, and internal pegs or screws to slip over. . If you read this, please a quick reply so that I know it might be useful. Arrrr! 🏴☠️🦓🏴☠️

Great addition to the family ! Just in case you didn't know though: wild camping is illegal in a lot of countries in Europe (like Italy and France for example). In most countries they have in designated areas/spots to camp and other times you might have to get permission in advance to camp in places like this.
There is a big difference in "illegal" on paper, vs what is actually allowed locally. For instance "on paper" Spain and Italy both don't allow wild camping. But in Mallorca, you get the police called on you if people see you with an awning out. While in Sardinia it's widely accepted, and thousands of camper vans and tents are everywhere during the summer months. Also sleeping in your car isn't considered wild camping anywhere. But once you pop the tent up or pull out the awning, then your wild camping. The rules are very vague and often not well enforced. And wore case, you get the police telling you to leave or move. It's not like they impound your vehicle or arrest you.

We RVed for 20+ years in the Western US. Great times in many of the national parks and a lot of mountain camping in the undeveloped forests as well.

In Europe pretty much every car is manual. Even renting. It cost's extra to rent a automatic. If you can even find one.

Perfect Choice. Congratulations! The advantage of the close to the door seating position is that you can easily lean out of the window to observe your left front wheel. This is useful when doing offroad.

The truck is in great shape. No need to "rebuild" anything really. We'll build a little something in the back eventually. But it's such a small space it won't take nearly as long as a full boat.

As a Brit I always like seeing our Defenders taking on the world. One thing to investigate is the locking differential. It will help on loose and steep terrain. And having been in the army reserve being forced to live in the back of a 110 on military exercises I think you are [expletive deleted] crazy to take this route but I can't wait to see how you get on. If you make it to the UK you should try to make it to our area in Cumbria to drive through the Lake District. You now have the perfect vehicle for it.

🤣 So TRUE!! Dan will need to put that trailer hitch back on so they can tow their “support trailer”; every Land Rover needs a trailer FILLED with spare parts, tools and two spare tires! And EVERY Land Rover owner will concur with that!

Just to stay real: after a month of driving around in this beautiful thing you will have consumed as much diesel as you yould have on Uma for the last 7 years had it been diesel powered. Enjoy the ride!

Have to say I am kind of sorry to see you going this route. I would imagine you have calculated the impact an overlanding audience can add to your subscriber base or you would not be doing it,, but I hate to see one of the top 3 or 4 sailing channels becoming dual fan base models. I hope it works for you. I have really enjoyed your sailing and boat build videos.
Honestly, that's not how we make decisions. Of course we're always glad to hear when people enjoy our videos, but "growing our audience" is never a goal we journey towards. Fur us, that's just the side effect of creating good videos about things we're passionate about. We only pursue things we're interested in and passionate about and then do our best to make good content around what we're already doing.
Interesting, I guess I just assumed you treated this like a career/job and tried to maximize the return on your hard work. You are both so incrediby talented in your videography, poise and genuineness in front of the camera. I just loved the fact that you went beyond the warm Crribbean island hopping stuff that eveyone does and ventured into the higher lattitudes to give us a glimpse of that and doing it with an electric boat. I guess I was selfish for that uniqueness that I was concerned that ovelanding seems so flooded an ordinary on the youtube platform these days. One year on the road? Around Europe is pretty darn good. But that means Uma repair is another year? Just asking. I will follow you regardless. But I heard you say this. i still recommend that you get a recovery winch for sticky situations, it could be permanently mounted either to the front or back, or it could be removable and able to pull from all directions 👍
Best comment here so far! The number of times a winch is needed will become uncountable very quickly. The rule in off-roading (even very light off-roading), “as soon as you leave the pavement, somebody needs a winch”! If that’s you, and it only happens once, that winch is paid for! Don’t underweight it either; whatever your budget is, get the highest weight rating available, and then buy the winch 2 steps above that…. you’ll never have more winch than you need, but you’ll frequently not have enough.
@@ricktaylor14001 i think 10-12 k lbs winch is going to be enough for this car.
i have one 12k winch in a platform and it could be carried to pull from every directions, only problem with this is that with the platform its 60+ kg so it needs 2 people for comfortable moving.
but you are correct, dont buy something which should be enough and dont go offroading with a hope that i dont probably need winch😆
I am sure we will eventually have that addition. But it’s not something we need right now in Sardinia.
I see a giant drawer down the middle, holding all of the cooking gear and cooler/frig. Plywood over the wheel wells. Maybe solar panels on the roof.
Psst... it's called a tow ball. And... owners normally refer to their Landrovers as a "Landy" 😉 And... they're never referred to as "trucks" (unless you're from the US) - they're 4 wheel drives. Keep an eye on the coolant. Landy's are notorious for having hissy fits in the heat!

Those kinds of rivers are able to go from almost 0 to meters deep of very fast running and roaring water in minutes if a storm pours a lot of rain over the mountains even not close to you.

It's Italy in the summer beside a damed river. Unless the damn blew, we're fine.
@@SailingUma I'm Italian and I know pretty well how summer weather on the northern "Appennini" could be unpredictable in the summer.
I know also pretty well how "not perfect" is the warning system for a damed rivers.
At least once a year rescue teams needs to save people camping in locations like that ☹️ and always in the spring/summer time.

At least you CAN work on your own. I think you see Defender owners working on their cars so much because they CAN be fixed, as opposed to just driving it to the shop because you can't fix anything yourself.

The older Land Rovers like the one I used to have, had a crash box. That meant thatyouI had to double clutch to shift from first into second gears. Not easy until you get the knack. When my wife took her driver's test on it in Nova Scotia, the inspector watched her double clutch once and told her on the spot that she'd passed her test without going any further.

Vehicle Roadtrip tip:
I have done many many thousands of miles with vehicle sleeping, in multiple types of vehicles. In North America these camping stops in all types of places are now frequently termed "boondocking". Social media has such groups. Often ruining previously great places to stop by over popularizing them.
TIP:
For privacy, and heat / sun blocking (also cold insulation) of the non- windshield windows I tried many things. What works best for me is actually, simply, modified cardboard.
Mine are cut-to fit inserts. Although your new rig looks like there' are no window ledges on which to insert.

But here's the first 'trick'. Paint one side black, and one side white. The black should be not high gloss, nor flat. If you do this well, when it's in your window, from the outside it will look like tinted window glass, and prying eyes are often fooled. You cannot afford indentation 'scratches' which betray the cardboard composition.
The white side goes inward at night for brightness and that illusion of space. But during a hot day, you can flip it (or change swap port and starboard panels) to not absorb (reflect) the sun. And with your rig being white painted, it also compliments this.

And then I discovered a source material box made from double layer corrugated cardboard! Twice the sun insulation. Stout. And I'm so jazzed about it that I've taken to making my own double layer inserts, using either glue, or carpet tape.
To cut these, to weird window shapes, use an 8 1/2x 11 sheet of paper to get the curves as a template to transfer, and use a power jigsaw instead of the usual boxknife. Sanding block for the rough edges.
With your new rig, these cardboard panels might need to be 1-2" larger than the windows, with hanging holes drilled, and internal pegs or screws to slip over.

Just in case you didn't know though: wild camping is illegal in a lot of countries in Europe (like Italy and France for example).
In most countries they have in designated areas/spots to camp and other times you might have to get permission in advance to camp in places like this.
There is a big difference in "illegal" on paper, vs what is actually allowed locally. For instance "on paper" Spain and Italy both don't allow wild camping. But in Mallorca, you get the police called on you if people see you with an awning out. While in Sardinia it's widely accepted, and thousands of camper vans and tents are everywhere during the summer months. Also sleeping in your car isn't considered wild camping anywhere. But once you pop the tent up or pull out the awning, then your wild camping. The rules are very vague and often not well enforced. And wore case, you get the police telling you to leave or move. It's not like they impound your vehicle or arrest you.
No, but they’ll fine you up the wazoo in the Balkans. In many places in Europe it’s a sport evading the camping police. 😅
