I once got to try both revisions in a brick-and-mortar store, and one thing I noticed that the ABXY keys might tilt on the side if pressed on any point but dead center. It's definitely not the same as the original GBASP where pushing everywhere mostly still pushed the whole button evenly downwards. It's the issue with the internals of the buttons, which some people say have been redesigned but some say have not.
Noting the addition of fish paper. At least when I've personally tested it, the fish paper insulation actually insulates the heat in the batter compartment and increases the surface temp of the back of the SP while it's running (I was just looping N64 games to force it to heat up for a rough comparison) and it averaged around 2 degrees Celsius hotter WITH the fish paper. So, I think because it's an insulation material, it's actually just insulating heat in the battery so that it has nowhere to go except in the battery compartment and back, so at least anecdotally I think the revision's fish paper addition is actively worse. On the exploding batteries thing, from what I can tell, I don't think it happens to every device necessarily, but it's a quality control issue with the charging IC due to really crummy manufacturing tolerances. It will get hot when charging, but the ones that will actively explode are the ones that get easily overloaded by voltage from the wall, even for the "safe" chargers. I don't watch my SP charge at all, just charge with the "right" charger or off a laptop USB port, and have been doing so for months with zero issues. Given that reports I've seen of people having this happen to them are either in those same conditions or with higher voltage chargers, I'd say the fears of explosion are likely misplaced, and you'd know by now if you had one that would catch fire. All the online reports I'd seen reported the issue within a month of use. The quality of life in lacking C to C charging is probably the big downside for me at this point.
Geeze, I was completely unaware of the battery issue, and my RG35XXSP is arriving today. I wouldn't have bought it if this video existed just 3 days earlier

Also it should not be a concern or an issue technology is advanced enough to know how to regulate and give the correct power for the battery it is charging these are clearly cheap as chips battery's with probably more chance of failing than pretty much any other Also not using lipo battery's could help as well especially for people who don't even think about how you should charge a battery etc. they are known most volatile battery's look up rc car lipo fire. The battery issue happens if you use usb-c fast charge mode, get a normal 5v charger 1.5 to 2 amps or charge from an USB port of your pc or laptop and there will be no problem with the battery
Finally a comparison between the old stock and new one. Just wish to know about the quality of the plastic that is used in those devices and an observation of the hinges. As someone who is getting their first emulation handheld and anbernic device, I don't want it to break easily. Saw a couple of people posting on reddit about the transparent colored ones (especially the blue one) being prone to easily having broken hinges in just a few weeks..

I can't see any possible issue if you just use logic and avoid leaving it plugged in for many more hours than what's necessary or use a much more modern charger. That being said, I haven't placed my order yet so if anyone miraculously sees this comment and has some suggestions or insight for a complete ignorant on buying his first cute emulator, I'm all ears :) Also thank you so much for the video, it's genuinely incredible how much stuff about those devices there is, I remember thinking using an emulator on a regular pc was already quite hard lol!!

The only issue, I have with the battery at fully charged is the drain while it being powered off for the night and next day it is at anywhere between 85-90% on both of my rg35xxsp's. That is an insane amount of discharge while the device is off. Not sure if anyone else is experiencing that but I ordered two battery replacements to see if that fixes it.

How is the hinge on this thing? I've been eyeing the RG35XXSP, but I don't know if I can trust the hinge to not completely break down after a year or two of use.
My plastic broke and don't use it that much. I analyzed how the hinge works and I gotta say the material is not good enough to handle all the force the rotation puts on the plastic. I realised like a week ago that both sides have cracks. I want to get one of the new models but I'm afraid the same thing happens again.
@@kokas466 was it a transparent shell? I've see people mention a few times that the transparent plastic Anbernic uses for the SP is a bit on the flimsy side.

A few thoughts: • That jacket is fire. • Something else that is fire are my skills at "NHL 07" for PSP. Rick Nash, David Vyborny, and Rusty Klesla FTW! Other than the one for my Galaxy Watch, all my bricks are USB-A and cables are still A to C. Knock on imitation wood veneer; but, so far so good. I've gotten to the point where I trust it enough to not play nursemaid to my SP while it charges. I'm still not going to let it charge while I'm asleep, but, I try not to do that ever with anything. • Your clear SP reminds me of prison. I was never there; but, I did watch a video about prison electronics once. In many places they're required by law to be clear so the prisoner who owns it can't hide contraband. This applies to handhelds, headphones, TVs, etc.

The battery on my Ambernick SP seemingly went out, what did you mean when you said you had to get an a to C charger? Would it be safer to charge it that way?
Man, they are really cheaping out by putting a piece of paper in between the battery and the board instead of just making a new bottom shell that actually protects the board with plastic from the shell itself.
If you're buying red, green, or white then you're almost certainly getting the new buttons. Any other color is going to be a dice roll for a bit until old stock has been exhausted. Considering how popular these units are, that might not be too long. FWIW; I have a blue model with the original buttons. I have zero issues with the buttons. I don't think you're going to be missing out if you do end up with an old stock model.
Honestly, people keep claiming that Anbernic has good build quality, and sure they might feel good in the hand, but they always have crippling basic quality and safety flaws. The easily bendable screen on 35xx+/h. Cardinal snapping. Charging issues (it's been at over a year! Spend the extra 25 cents per unit). Terrible software where it took them 2 years to figure out a basic sleep mode. (a different rant but I don't think community software makes up for it, with battery issues on knulli and sacrifices on minui, bugs because of the small teams etc. Nothing against the teams, incredible work, but not an excuse for supporting anbernic) And now they are basically producing what's going to be e-waste within two years with their lack of basic quality assurance and exploding batteries. As long as they keep pushing out devices at this tempo, they will never change or improve. Thank god for retroid, AYN, and even TRIM to an extent.
I’m gonna be real with you this is a complete non issue. Use the right cable, call it a day. I’m not sure why you’re getting hung up on that. To each their own though.
I just today had to send one back that I bought about a month ago, right before the new colors were announced. The hinges on both sides cracked after very light use. I'll probably try my luck again with a new color to see if I just got a lemon but I was a little disappointed, I was loving it up until it cracked
So they want you to be around when the battery explode. Strange they didn't advise using safety glasses 🫣 Maybe they start selling some metal charging cases soon 😂
Let's be real joey, that advice is for the people that already bought it. I'm happy you're able to just buy another device instead, but to some people a single purchase is huge investment.
@JoeysRetroHandhelds the"look at it while charging" one. Personally I'm stuck with this rg35 since I cant just buy another one that easily. Any advice helps my relatively lack of knowledge.
Its an overblown situation. Like 3 examples of devices burned up, ppl were just reposting the same posts. This falls well below how many actually sold and had no issues. Samsung had a more widespread battery issue with its flagship galaxy phone. They're going to be duds in manufacturing, its just the ouch of the draw sometimes
It's just a battery health issue. People don't understand that you shouldn't be charging devices with input voltage and amperage that aren't the same as what the battery can take. There is a reason that on the back of the device is tells you "ADAPTER INPUT: 5V - 1.5A". I can guarantee you that everyone who had a battery explode charged the device with an adapter that didn't match the specs.

Be safe y’all! Cheers!
I have a PS1 and GBA SP, and to be able to play PS1 in a device that looks like an SP, I just wonder how it feels.
My GBA SP is working, but it's showing its age.
It feels amazing
Mine makes like a buzzy sound (if I listen closely). Not a big deal but i was wondering if this is normal.
Mine too, just got it. I'm planning to put a sticker on the speaker.
@LeoThePlayerOnline I guess it's common then... Which one did you get btw? The revised one? I have the gray one with the pink buttons.
Gray as well, turned out to be a battery problem, it charged really really slow but i solved it. Following online suggestions I've unplugged the battery and wait a couple minutes to replug it and turn it on. That solved the problem and the buzz is gone too! Sorry for my english, i'm in italy
@@LeoThePlayerOnline I'll try that. Thanks :) By the way, your English is really good.
Question, Max or Checo?
What question even is this, Max!
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds This makes this Dutch guy very happy 😁
The battery on my Ambernick SP seemingly went out, what did you mean when you said you had to get an a to C charger? Would it be safer to charge it that way?
yes... and 5V/1.5A charger... it wouldn't be safer, it's the way it's been designed. Charger 5V/1.5A > USB cable A to C...
Did they make the buttons any quieter or do they still sound like a soda can getting slowly crushed?
Third timestamp
Nice! I purchased & received a Donkey Kong iron-on patch from ebay to super glue on the top lid of my RG35XXSP that I like to call Silverado 😁☀️
Man, they are really cheaping out by putting a piece of paper in between the battery and the board instead of just making a new bottom shell that actually protects the board with plastic from the shell itself.
Any way to know which version am i getting if i'm buying it from Aliexpress Anbernic's store?
If you're buying red, green, or white then you're almost certainly getting the new buttons. Any other color is going to be a dice roll for a bit until old stock has been exhausted. Considering how popular these units are, that might not be too long.
FWIW; I have a blue model with the original buttons. I have zero issues with the buttons. I don't think you're going to be missing out if you do end up with an old stock model.
The new colors come with MUos already installed?
They do not.
Based Joey is based.
Based on based on based.
Will you be wearing a Mercedes AMG in the next video? Or a McLaren?
Hehehe
Someones ready for austin...
F1 is back baby!
For some reason I read autism lol
ngl i hate how loud the buttons are it'd be embarrassing to play in public T_T
I did that with my original Sp with a green clamshell and a pokemon sticker inside 🥲
I just today had to send one back that I bought about a month ago, right before the new colors were announced. The hinges on both sides cracked after very light use. I'll probably try my luck again with a new color to see if I just got a lemon but I was a little disappointed, I was loving it up until it cracked
Dumb design. Having cpu almost touching battery
lmao i love unhinged joey
do consoles from retroid come with pre installed games?
and if not, is it hard to install them manually?
Nope / easy.
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds have you done a video about it how to do it?
My Retroid Pocket 4 Pro setup guide would help you.
YAAAAAWN. Let me know when they finally make a 28SP...
So they want you to be around when the battery explode. Strange they didn't advise using safety glasses 🫣
Maybe they start selling some metal charging cases soon 😂
Gen question since when do ppl use c to c charging ?? Never seen anyone do that
Ah so you charge yours like i charge mine.... Barely at all 🤣
So,e folks mentioned the new plastic is creaky.

Congrats!
Let's be real joey, that advice is for the people that already bought it. I'm happy you're able to just buy another device instead, but to some people a single purchase is huge investment.
Which advice?
@JoeysRetroHandhelds the"look at it while charging" one. Personally I'm stuck with this rg35 since I cant just buy another one that easily. Any advice helps my relatively lack of knowledge.
@@aymodaslacker8852 Sure, that does suck, it doesn't stop from making that advice for a device that can literally explode, quite stupid lol
First time hearing about the battery situation. Anbernic just completely lost me as a potential customer.
It happened to like 2 people on Reddit. I’ve owned one for months and so have 1000s of others with no issues
