In 1936 my granddad bought 2 parcels in the middle of orange groves in Pasadena, Calif. He built 1 Sears kit home for he & my grandma. In 1951 he & my uncles built a second home next door for my parents while my dad was fighting in the Korean war. By the time he got home his new home was ready to move into with his new wife. Thy managed to keep the home a secret from him until he returned from war. It was a wonderful home to grow up in. Both homes are still standing & historical landmarks. More importantly they look amazing.

Years ago I devoured a book called Letters from Honeyhill, which was the experiences of a homestead couple in Wyoming shortly after The Great War. They were beekeepers who started out living in a shack but prospered enough after many years to buy one of these Sears and Roebuck houses. There were pictures of it and it was so sturdy and handsome, very much like this one shown. Sadly, like so many others, the couple suffered acute financial hardship when the Great Depression rolled around.

This home was bought from a Sears and Roebuck catalog. It's lasted almost 100 yrs. Why can't builders today build home like this? These so called contractors build temporary homes that last 15 yrs at the most then need major repairs. This is exactly why I won't buy homes today. They're built like crap using substandard homes we're supposed to pay huge amounts of money for. Then have to pay taxes on said property the rest of your life for it. No thanks, that's not a good way to spend your money. You can't even leave these homes to your kids because they won't last. They aren't generational homes. It's just sad.
