Ft Mad key point on BNSF Transcon route California to Chicago and often good place to catch power balancing moves. If there are fairly large differences in freight volumn moving between East and West or North and South areas you need to get locos where most needed and sometimes best to do other than in regular trains.
When Amtrak or other railroads pull those private cars, are they paid for it? I mean can someone just call say BNSF and say, I have a private train I want pulled from A to B?
Most definitely the privately owned passenger cars generally pay their way as there are established tariffs for the charges, usually per car except special group moves, just like any other commodity (or freight cars owned by manufacturers, etc for that matter). Exceptions may be made for non-profit organizations such as museums, historical groups, etc. What is probably just as important is that any cars, owned by railroads, manufacturers, museums, whoever must meet stringent mechanical, safety appliance, and operational standards before they can move in freight service (no passengers) and even higher levels if they are to move in passenger/Amtrak service. Moving privately owned cars in today's railroading is just as involved as the freight lines own equipment.
@James McKenzie Not sure about your 5K per day per car charge (would be notable even by Amtrak standards) figure. My experience moving equipment is that charges, by freight or Amtrak, are mileage based with add ons for specialty handling/services, extra switching and "hotel"/parking-storage, etc.
