I would say they're in time with the intended cadence of the vocal line, rather than the beat of the music, and have been done like that to help you n I sing the song in a similar style to Morissey. Maybe you feel an urge to sing the lyrics in a more regular rhythm, and that would be fine too. Just experiment!
This song has a dark and lonely feel but Karafun still captures so much of the sound and mood. It's great!
