From a Scottish girl who has never forgot you and your wonderful music. You made Scotland proud.Rest in blissful peace Stuart.Wish you were still here making beautiful music. We miss you. X
Well he was actually English. He was born in England. His birth certificate will say England. Having parents born elsewhere doesn't make you that nationality.
lovely fella.. met him the day after the skids had played liverpool rotters, 1980 ( he'd stayed over to catch the ramones play the same club the next day) very approachable and chatty... we ended sharing a jazz cigarette and ended up talking, at great length, about hawkwind! much to his girlfriend (or wife's) disdain that once on the subject of them he'd never shut up (which was true!).. haha... anyways.. a couple of years later big country played the warehouse in liverpool (first uk tour and an incredible gig)... so anyways, after the gig as i walked past the dressing room (next to the stage) the door was open and a shout of hey! hawkwind!!! roared from out of the room.. i was beckoned inside, met the band etc.. still to this day i can't get over how he'd remembered our initial encounter.. as i said before a lovely fella

South African here with Scottish roots...and whenever im up the road on the m6 to m74 heading for Glasgow ( family there) i blast their music. Beautiful country with beautiful people and fantastic food...Haggis supper for the way home
So underrated was Stuart Adamson an amazing soul saw them at Brixton academy 84/85 best gig I've ever been to ❤ such a shame how it all ended. RIP great man
Truly tragic loss and greatly missed. Saw them at the assembly rooms in derby, he had the whole place bouncing. He commented on what a lovely little place we had. God bless you Stuart ❤
Met him and the band twice after gigs in Liverpool in 83 and 84. They always used to stay behind to meet the fans and sign stuff. I got my cassette of The Crossing and a programme signed. Such a sad story.
I saw him play in The Skids. It was in the old Russell Club in Manchester (That area was ROUGH) . Met the group, got his autograph. They whole group (Skids) were so humble. You just knew there was something special about this man. I loved that 'Bag pipey' sound he created with his guitar and then carried on with Big Country. It's such a shame it ended the way it did. He was a star!
Big Country was one of my favourite bands in the 80s And I was lucky enough to see them live! RIP Stuart I hope you're in a happier place! You'll never be forgotten and you are very sadly missed!x❤x
I was lucky to see them at Oxford Apollo (then called Oxford New Theatre) queing up some stranger said They are not punk, due to my look. Little did they know Stewart Adamsons roots, ignorant feck.

Rest in peace, big man! Wonderful singer-songwriter and the best guitarist I have ever heard: your music has inspired me for over 40 years - thank you!
Living and studying in Edinburgh at the time I was fortunate enough to see Big Country live through the mid 80s and early 90s. As a band they were a force of nature - to this day I can't really think of a live act that has topped them - they could turn a venue into a heaving, bouncing, joyous mob as soo as they started playing. At the heart of it all was Stuart such a great front man and musician who always seemed grounded and humble. Sadly missed by many people.
i actually work on the same street as the hotel that stuart ended his life at. i often drive by and think about what he must have been going through at that time in his life. i'm a life long fan of big country and stuart and i pay tribute by listening to the music often and turning other people on to the songs.
A brilliant guitarist! And a musician whose lyrics were 'always steeped in authenticity'!! And his unbridled passion for both The Skids And Big Country is surely undoubted!!
Not underrated by their hard-core fans, their live Barrowlands concert could have sold out 50 times. When your senses are out of your control this shit happens, how many of us have thought and wished Stuart had our number so that we could have talked him round.
❤ RIP I absolutely loved Big Country when they broke in Canada. Such beautiful lyrics and a unique sound! Never stopped loving them and was very sad to hear of his passing.

I just stumbled upon this channel. Excellent posting. It has always seemed to me that very little is known about why Stuart gave up on life. I've always wondered why someone who brought so much hope and happiness to my generation, could possibly be so low. I will always follow his sage advice to "Stay Alive!!". If only he could've taken his own advice. RIP Stuart
The last line of "In a Big Country" is "Stay Alive". My best friend hung himself in September 1986. I still remember us partying to "In a Big Country". I never knew or even got to see Stuart Adamson live but I can honestly say that I miss them both. I can't help but feel that "what if" about both.

Amazing comments below to reflect the genius that was Stuart and his passion. That Big Country blossomed in the eighties when punk had been displaced by a genre that was more about presentation than music is telling. The sound was so distinctive and perhaps that was their undoing after 5 or 6 big years. They were almost the only band I listened to of this era. They kept rock music alive in a difficult time. I was at the memorial event at Barrowlands, quite something, the musicians that played, the atmosphere, but still a sad occasion. Stuart Adamson, perhaps Scotland's finest musical son!! Time for a reunion but not simply trying to recreate that unique sound and presence?
Flew to England in 1998 to see them play at a small community center in the northern lake district region. Met the boys backstage after the show. So glad I did!
I met a great guy from Dunfermline around 2008 in Langkawi. An island of the coast of Malaysia. I couldn't believe it when he told me about Stuarts drinking. With Tony on bass and "Bree zee" on the riser, they had a unique sound. I was able to see them at the Excelsior Mill in Atlanta. i expected to see a comment here on a song I really like -- "Fragile Thing". A deeply emotional song that served as a harbinger of future tragedy for Stuart. In the video he's sitting alone in a restaurant lamenting a lost relationship which is doubly ironic due to Stuart's life at the time. The song's message wasn't lost on those who knew him. Somehow he wound up in a Hawaii motel alone with too much alcohol and his personal demons. They got the best of his willpower. Still, I was a bit shocked and saddened to learn of Stuart Adamson's passing especially the way he took himself out. Depression is a emotional roller coaster. I still enjoy listening to Big Country. Stuart Adamson lost his life but he left his mark.
I was lucky enough to catch Big Country at the Hultsfreds rock festival, Sweden in 1988 and it was an incredible gig for sure. Joe Strummer also performed at the same festival and it was great to catch so many musical heroes at the same time!
The thunderous intro of Into The Valley, remains one of the 'most compelling of all time'!! The Skids were a glorious hybrid of machismo and intellectualism. In addition i met Stuart and his politeness was inspiring! He really was the embodiment of professionalism!!
