    This was excellent Emma. What a wonderful tribute. The story of meeting him was great. Love that harmonica. The clip was perfect. I could go on about his importance and legacy, but I think the fact that this wonderful tribute was done by a young woman like yourself speaks volumes of his legacy and impact. Bravo. RIP John Mayall.

    Thanks for sharing your record collection, Emma! I got turned onto John Mayall when I discovered Mick Taylor cut his teeth in the Blues Breakers. Then I found out Eric Clapton also played with Mayall. It wasn’t long before I discovered everybody and their brother played with Mayall. And this video has cheered me up. Not sure we’ll ever stop missing John Mayall. I know everyone who played with him will miss him more in addition to his family.
    I also loved that story about you meeting him. He had this smile which was so sincere. You could tell he was really happy!
    Rest in peace and God bless you, Mr. Mayall, Peter Green, Jack Bruce et al.

    So great to see young people with an appreciation of great English Blues. I was 17 & listening to pirate radio stations when two brothers I knew introduced me to John Mayall, that album changed my life, it is in my collection along with many others by The Blues Breakers, & John Mayall. Also of course the Bands that grew out of his stable. That 'Blues Alone' album has some lovely tracks on it. "Marsha's Mood" is beautiful.

    Exellent tribute! John taught us how to love the blues, and he was a mentor to the greats! He was not only a traditionalist, but a great innovator not afraid to try new approaches like the fusion things, no drums, and the Mark-Almond lineup (Room to Move is so fantastic!)..
    I just found your channel the other day after you were on the video chat with all the ("jazz nerd" ) collectors.
    I'm a British Blues fan as well. I've been a fan of John since I got my driver's permit in 1967 and was allowed to drive on my own at 16. I'm from a small town and never lived close enough to catch one of his tours. My sister was living in Boston during that time and I asked her what was hot on the music scene. She said Country Joe & the Fish, & The Cream.
    I promptly drove down to the department store and I picked up Fresh Cream, my first record. I didn't know the band members, but the jacket blurb said Clapton was in the Yardbirds and Mayall. The Yardbirds had been my favorite since I became a teenager and started really listening to the radio. They were so far ahead of their time, especially Jeff. I really didn't have access to band info back then, until I started reading album credits. It was hard to find Yardbirds albums in the store, since they had broken up. So my next mission was to get a Mayall album with Clapton. I had to go to the record shop, which was more expensive. There weren't any used record shops in my hometown back then. They didn't have Beano, but they did have Crusade and that is just a fantastic introduction album.
    Cream has remained my favorite band ever since, but Mayall was always a must-get, so I was also picking up the Mayall albums whenever I could. All through my college years, I was turning people on to this great rootsy blues music that wasn't getting airplay. you had to hunt these albums out and it was like finding treasure when you found one.
    I finally caught up with all the iterations of the lineup about the time USA Union came out, and I was so stoked because i love Canned Heat. This to me is some of Larry Taylor's best work because he is the total rhythm section; there were no drums, and no guitar. So often the bass gets buried in a mix-down, or muffled, but not there. My roommates at the time all loved this album and it was in heavy rotation.
    I didn't keep my older Mayall albums in the community pile; those only came out on special occasions, like when someone new to Mayall was visiting and I would happily bring them out. I still have them!
    By the way, there is a new Yardbirds double album compilation just out.

    Fantastic tribute Emma to John Mayall (RIP). I saw John in concert from about mid sixties and whole of the seventies, he came to Glasgow every year without fail and usually brought a new band every time with amazing musicians....I saw the Turning Point band and Jazz/Fusions band amongst others. One guitarist who did surprise me was Jimmy McCulloch who played with Wings....what a bluesman.....That was one of John's smaller bands with Keef Hartley on drums, Larry Taylor on bass, Jimmy on guitar and John on harp, piano, guitar and vocals. I still have my John Mayall vinyls...I noticed there was two I have that you didn't show....Bare wires and Back to the Roots....but you probably have them. I always loved his chic a chic singing with harp...bloody amazing!! Anyway thanks again Emma, you have great taste in BLUES!! subbed and like 454.

After Peter Green left the John Mayall Bluesbreakers, he started Fleetwood Mac, and the first record called Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac is a great blues record.

    Just sat down with my morning coffee to see your video in my feed with the sad news of Mayall's passing. A wonderful heartfelt tribute to him Emma I don't think we'll see his like again - so many great musicians owe their careers to the man. So glad I got to see him live even if it was just the one time. I thought I was mad to buy the massive very expensive CD box set that Madfish put out a while back, but I'm so glad I did. Think it's going to be a day to delve into his catalogue. RIP John.

    Very nicely done. It's good to see your generation discovering the OG musicians!. I first heard John Mayall in the mid-1960s on John Peels show. I've been listening to him ever since. In 1970, I saw him live for the only time at the Bath Blues Festival along with an amazing line-up. Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Jefferson Airplane, amongst others. I was 19!
    While it is very sad that he has gone, as you showed with your record collection, he has left us a wonderful collection of great music, which will live on. There are also the numerous videos on RUclips. His legacy is that nearly everyone who played blues or rock over the last 50-something years has some connection to John. They either played in one of his bands, or played with someone who did. It would be fascinating to try to build a family tree starting with the first incarnation of the Bluesbreakers.
    Thank you for bringing back some great memories and spurring me to replace some of the missing items from my current collection. I had most of his stuff on vinyl from the 60's through the 80s, but it went missing while I was in hospital in 2005. Now I am slowly replacing it with CDs or downloads. BTW I like your t-shirt.

      One of my biggest regrets in life is that I did not go to the Bath festival in 1970. I went To The IOW festival and at the time I thought I couldn't really afford another trip which meant I missed out on seeing John Mayall and Led Zep, unknown to me I'd never get another opportunity to see either of them 'cos of stuff, life etc.

      @@dazedandconfused318 That's the way it goes. I never saw John again, but I saw Led Zeppelin again in 1975 at Earls Court in London. Recently I found that there are videos on RUclips of at least 2 of the 3 nights they played, but I have forgotten which night I was there! One of mmy friends has a contact for the young woman I took, so I may ask here if she can remember.
      I have all the remastered Zep cd's, and several of John's, mostly the early ones so I will be listening to the young Clapton.

      @@EightVinylLow It was a pleasure to watch. The news effected me more than I had expected. My Dad was a classical musician and played Viola in symphony orchestras. When I was growing up there were always groups of his friends getting together to play. In effect classical jams. Listening to John Mayall in any of his iterations had the same effect on my. They always sounded like a group of mates having a jam and a lot of fun.
      Some friends and I a re planning a get together to listen to whatever we have of John's recordings. At least one of us still has LP's, and one has a proper listening room with turntables and cd players, so we shall get in some beers and have a good time. An old farts listening party!

    Wow! This is the first I've heard of his death! Now, I should share my own personal "John Mayall Story!" I was working with a local Bluegrass/Country/Southern Rock band whose leader was a guy named Leon Poindexter back in 1977/78 in the Tampa Bay area of Florida. We were scheduled to open for a Mayall concert at the Sunshine Speedway racetrack the next day, but we were booked to play the Don Cesar (sp?) Hotel lounge on St. Petersburg Beach the night before. The stage was rather high and large, and a couple of sets in, I felt somebody tugging at my pant leg. Looking down, I saw a little guy beckoning for my attention. He asked if it would be okay if John Mayall came up and played one of my harmonicas? I said "sure" and passed the word to the rest of the band. I had no idea Mayall was staying at that high-end hotel that night! And then, the great man himself stepped up. He looked in my case, which held 12 diatonic harmonicas, mostly Hohner Golden Melodies and a few old Marine Bands. He then declared that he didn't like the "plastic" Golden Melodies and preferred to play the "wooden" Marine Bands. He chose one in Bb and my band launched into a blues tune in the corresponding key. I went and sat down in the crowd and listened to one of my early harmonica idols play one of my harps for the rest of the set. Great memory! "Brute" Bruttomesso

    When I was 17 my friends and I got into the Blues and we discovered the Blues Breakers, since then I have been a big fan of John Mayall person and musician. A couple of years ago I went to a John Mayall and friends concert, amazing. When it was over and we were walking out the door, sitting there at a small table in the doorway selling CDs was the one and only John Mayall himself. I spoke to him, told him how much he meant to me and thanked him for all his wonderful music, bought a CD which he signed, we shook hands, I wished him well and bid him good night. And I am so glad for that fleeting moment I met him.

    Hi Emma! Thanks for this tribute to a great and remarkable man. I bought my first harmonica under the spell of USA Union. "My Pretty Girl" is perhaps my all time favorite song by him. Turning Point got a lot of FM radio play back in the day, with "California" and "Room to Move." In 2013 I was thinking about how in all those years I had never seen him live, and so I looked up his tour schedule and discovered that he was headlining a blues festival in San Jose that very weekend! Naturally I went to that, and then saw him again a year later in Oakland, and another year after that in Napa. Farewell John!

    I had the Beano, Back to the Roots, and USA Union vinyls. They were all great but USA Union was my favorite. On that album Harvey Mandel was the guitar soloist and he played without sustain, unusual for the time when everyone was copying Clapton and Hendrix. The band also featured Sugarcane Harris rocking on violin and Larry Taylor thumping the bass. Sadly I lost my entire '60s and '70s LP collection during a cross-country move. It would probably worth worth a million today, or maybe more. I saw John (I think it was in Anaheim California Convention Center) when he featured Blue Mitchell on trumpet. The audience was screaming all through the music so John stopped and told them to calm down, "Give us some room." Also he performed without a shirt to show off that he was still buff in his forties. RIP John Mayall, you were one-of-a-kind.

    in the day i saw him many times,he almost seemed like the whisky a go go house band he played there so often.for a time he used jazz musicians ,and thats how i learned about jazz,it was always a great opening night when he appeared the Whisky would be packed-iloved seeing him and i would see him when he wasnt playing but just there watching other bands,i loved the turning point album,really so many were great bands he had i have pictures i took when mick taylor played in his band,i've never forgotten those nights,and there was a waitress who smiled at me one night while john was playing,i was sitting on the stairs there,i never had the courage to sayanything to her,she was always nice, because she was johns girlfriend at the time,so i hardley stood a chance hahaha.HE was special and his bands creative,i loved the crusade album,my best friend at the time first played it for me---anyway great times and a real special talent who always changed bands ,styles,blues,jazz,acoustic ect-i will miss him like i missed those days on oprning night at the whiskey A GO GO ,🤔💚😢

    "The Sun Is Shining Down" John Mayall
    Forty Below Records 2022
    I think is his newest release, I'm surprised you didn't show it.
    Carolyn Wonderland is the wonderful guitar player you saw with John. I've seen her 6 or 7 times - she's great. I am surprised to discover 11 different John Mayall titles in my collection.

    World of John Mayall was the first album I ever bought, aged 15, in 1970. The Bear, with that great intro, was my favourite track, about the time he lived with Bob ‘The Bear’ Hite in Laurel Canyon. When he sings, “All my friends in Canned Heat ..” I thought Wow he knows these guys!

    When you brought up the Beano album, I decided to go ahead and share my John Mayall discovery story.
    I guess I should go ahead and share my father's story. He(my father) said that he went into the Whiskey a go-go, and heard a music that blew away all the surf music that he had been listening to through the 60s. At the time, John Mayall's main guitarist was Mick Taylor. But, he brought up a guy out of the audience to play a song or two. And, then that guy went back in the audience, and John said "thanks Eric!"

    • @oker59
      @oker59 2 месяца назад

      Well, I like to say that the Doors movie is when I went down the blues rabbit hole - first the British Blues/Rock scene of Rolling Stones, Cream, Led Zeppelin, and then original blues for African Americans.
      Well, after getting into the Doors officially( I had of course heard of them. Mtv had these "Closet Classics" which they always showed the same thing - the Doors Light My Fire!), I tried Led Zeppelin. I actually found Led Zeppelin to deep blues on a first listen. I then got into the Beatles actually!
      I binged on the Beatles, and then I found . . . John Mayall! I don't remember which album was first - the live at Klooks Kleek or maybe some compilation album. But, it was not the Beano album!
      I found the Beano album in a curious way. For some reason, he had two Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton separated from the main John Mayall area of his vinyl collection. He had it up a row, and to the left.

    • @oker59
      @oker59 2 месяца назад

      I think I had listened to all the compilation albums, which had a smattering of Eric Clapton(and Peter Green) - including Stormy Monday which was on the "Down the Line" compilation album. My father had like three or four John Mayall compilation albums - and Down the line was one.
      But, once again, for some strange reason, my father had the Beano album separated apart from all the other John Mayall albums!
      He had almost all the John Mayall albums, from his LIve at Klooks Kleek through the Jazz Blues fusion albums, but one - the Peter Green album - the Hard Road album!
      But, several of the compilation albums had a few Peter Green songs, and some Peter Green material that didn't make it on an official album - songs like "Out of Reach", "Mama talk to your daughter."
      I was like "who's this guy who's as good as Eric Clapton? How can anybody be as good as Eric, and I've never heard of him? I figured it out paying close attention to the live "Diary of a Band" in a magazine reporter interview, or someone like that, he was asking John questions about "so Eric left to form Cream, and . . . Peter Green left to form . . . Fleetwood Mac"
      My jaw hit the floor. i just paused, moved the needle back to try to hear again. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I was like "what, Fleetwood Mac is Stevie Nicks." I know Fleetwood Mac's Rumors was great and all. But, I couldn't believe Fleetwood Mac went back that far.
      I soon found a buncyh of Peter Green Fleetwood Mac albums at local rare and used record stores. Mine were actually written in chinese - the liner notes were all in Chinese!

    • @oker59
      @oker59 2 месяца назад

      Peter Green made a comeback, officially with a 1995 Guitar World interview. I had already dug him up - had the Hard Road album.
      That's probably my main John Mayall's Bluesbreakers discovery stories.
