Curiously enough theatre writers seem to comprehend how to create adaptations better than their hollywoodian counterparts. If you put them side-to-side you'll see how differently they handle the core concepts of the original work. An example, Broadway's Beauty and the Beast understood the story's core message better than Disney's live-action, adding new scenes and extending ones where it was due for developing the thoughts that were *already* there instead of nitpicking at details and facts irrelevant to the plot ahead, whose only purpose was to please the audiences who could *barely see past the surface* (like assuming the villagers found Belle odd for reading when in in fact they found her odd for preferring to drift away in fictional stories instead of finding enjoyment in the provincial life they thought it was so good for them. It was common for women to read in the 17th century, the B&TB novel was published in a magazine for women during the same period! Thing is, Gaston is a chauvinitic pig who disapproves of this because it doesn't serve *his* interests, that's how self-centered he is! If he sees no benefit in it, so shouldn't anybody else.). Long story short, theatre plays mindfully deconstruct the story they're working upon from top to bottom so they can comprehend what's it trying to say *before* they carry on with the adaptations, this ensures the messages and thought processes will be kept as loyal as possible and won't be lost with unnecessary changes.

Yominji I actually have been rooting for light from the start, I was happy and shock that he won and L died as I know that a villian like him will die someday, especially in anime It was than I knew that some one else will step in ,some one smarter or equal to Lawlet ,a true succesor Which is ofcourse Nate river, aka Near
honestly, the part after L's death isn't bad because L wasn't there... it's because it's completely illogical, Kira had won-- he became justice, kira's cult was justice, there was no way of actually catching him, when they finally found out that Light was kira, he could've just said "okay... put your hand cuffs on me and see what happens" because... police isn't anything at that point-- every single person in kira's cult and even people that just like kira without being in his cult would've helped him out and he would finally and truly become the god of the new world as he always wanted, the only reason he died was because they wanted a more dramatic ending (which they could've done in different ways too.. i'm just saying from a logical point of view, there was no way of actually 'catching' kira)
I agree... I was so shocked by L death in the anime, he's ny favourite, I had to took a break for months before I continue to watch it. I become Kira supporter from there... So I love them both.
I love that it almost feels like a love song, L knows whats going to happen... But Light is talking like he wants to stay with L just a little longer. Just like L sounds the same. Now im just sad :((
Light was the first person to ever challenge L and the same could be said for light. They gave purpose to each other's lives in their own sick way, and it will be a bitter sweet victory for whoever wins.
Aspie Near Haha! Damn, you’ve got me there. It’s amazing that a series like Death Note, so serious and gritty, can still sneak in things like this, really speaks to the ability of the writers.
Okay good- so I wasn't the only one thinking that this sounded like a really dramatic break-up song? I always hear it the more I listen to it (something with the overall tone of the music Idk) and I can't help but feel like if this was a break up song instead of them freaking DYING there wouldn't be a damn difference. Or like some really intense regret song it's been literally driving me nuts. I've tried to look at it outside a LawLight view and it really sounds like the two main characters of the show are breaking up forever and I just can't-
I love/hate this song. It makes me cry. You can FEEL the desperation and fear in Lawli-pop's voice, and Light is spot-on. The slight guilt paired with the euphoria of his win are perfect.
Jarrod Spector's voice is perfect for L, as Jeremy's one is perfect for Light. One is chaotic and almost rough, the other is kind of regal and collected (or is it just me?). One of my favorite musicals and castings, love it❤️
The thing I love about this songs is how human L sounds. The little laugh at the start is super depressing, because everyone knows this is it and his last moments. I love the semi duet at the end, and the way their lines merge together. L’s lines are super well done, extending much longer almost as if it’s him trying to hold onto life: “Like a closing door” And then their last two lines they both sound so sad, and it’s quite depressing. This song really made me appreciate L more. Edit: everyone’s thoughts on these songs are the best :) “...but you were with me all the way,” is the part where you can tell Light doesn’t necessarily want L to die, even if that means his victory. A lot of other comments have said this sounds like a breakup song, and it honestly does. I don’t know if that makes this song better for the undertones it adds, or just sadder. I think it does make the song better.
The voices are phenominal and I just ??? Really want to cry?? Like Light is trying to show his dominance and L's not having it? He still fights back despite the fact that hes going to die. And light wont let that fact go. Almost like all he wants is the victory, not specifically L's death.
Quick thoughts: 1) Why didn't the Japanese production include L's first verse? It's pretty good! 2) I like L's consistency with the imagery of data, movies, pictures in all his songs. It speaks volumes about his isolation from normal human interaction. 3) This is a breakup song! The writers are not even pretending with the subtext.
Theodore Francis Allen So sorry about your channel being taken down. You put in so much effort into sharing those videos:( Instead of waiting for Broadway, an amateur production can easily be put up now.

Am I the only one who interpret this song as Light being a triumphant arrogant prick? It seems like many people thought he has regret here but his lyrics is very condescending and sadistic to me. “I always stayed a step ahead but you were with me all the way” sounds to me like a “it was foolish of you to try to win because you never could but good job avoiding the inevitable for this long”. And “feel how a minute spends now, when you wish you had a minute more” I interpret as pure sadistic glee. Like he is trying to taunt and scare L before he dies. But maybe that’s just me who don’t see any regret in this song
What i love abt this line is that throughout the whole show L and Light have been on even terms. In most adaptions L is he one who’s ahead and who wins. But here, because of something he doesn’t even know about, Light has gotten the upper hand in this game of wits.
@@Rivenlore99 I agree especially with the end movie light dies 1st anime L dies 1st in the musical (unless I'm remembering it wrong) they both die at the same time showing that they were always on an even wavelength
Jarrod Spectre plays L right? He did such a good job with this, I commend him on that first verse. idk if it's just me but there's this wavering to his voice that sounds scared or remorseful. It sounds like a man who know's he'll die and is afraid.
The skill in his lines while singing (both of them though) is so well done, and it amazes me whenever people point throngs like this out and bring it to my attention. Do you know any other things he’s sung in?
The Way it Ends, aka the ultimate anime/manga-fan break up song I swear to heck this freaking song sounds more and more like a broadway break up the more I listen to it
The most tragic part of this song is L's singing voice getting weaker and weaker as he repeats the line "like a closing door." The first time he belts it out with so much raw emotion and goes up on the end of the note. Then the second time he goes down on the end of the note as if he's realizing there's no more point in fighting. And the final time he sings it so resigned like he's accepting his inevitable death :( It makes me so sad!
I didn’t actually ship them until I listened to the musical. I liked their relationship and I thought it was tragic, sweet, and super messed up, but with the way the musical frames them like a romantic couple it adds so many new elements to it. I need to rewatch the anime from this lens. The drama!
I think the Japanese lyrics give L the final word a bit better, letting Kira know that this isn'tover yet, no matter what happens to him now. I do agree that his first lyrics in this one are really good though.
I think that the way light talks in this song compared to a song like “where is the justice” really shows how the power took him over, at first it was all about helping people but now he is thinking about power and is using things like manipulation to get his way.
L in the musical: I'm sitting down, pouring tea as if I do it everyday. Me: YOU DO, DO IT EVERYDAY!!!!! L in the musical: As if I'm acting in a play. Me: DUDE YOU BROKE THE FUCKIN' FOURTH WALL GOD DAMMIT, YOU ARE IN A PLAY!!!!!
As much as I love L, I'm glad the musical ended here. We get to the see Light's power overtake him and make him "evil." Though, I wonder what Mello and Near would look like on stage.
Something I noticed was in the entire musical L has the higher parts to Light. Somebody suggested that it gives ideas that L has the moral high ground despite being morally the same as Light. But anyway at 2:07 Light has a higher note than L. I think atleast. But it's weird bc the whole musical L has the higher parts except for that line
I honestly hated that L died, because I fricking love him, but... I've always been Team Kira, and what really devastated me is how Light dies. So both L and Kira's death are traumatic for me T_T
Hey Aspie Near, I really wanted to thank you for posting all these songs. I love the he Death Note anime and am so glad I'm able to listen to the musical mostly in English. The musical is so great but they do not distribute so thank you for being Kira and spreading the justice that is the English versions of the songs.
How did you get ahold of all these recordings? I'm just curious because not many have them and if they do they are the not the full versions as is in the case with "Where is the Justice".
T. F. Allen shared them with me. He has a google drive folder with all the songs on it here: drive.google.com/drive/u/0/mobile/folders/0B8WQOV5JijrIUzVRU3NoR2I4TFk
I was a bit disappointed Light dies so quickly after, but I guess that’s to show no one really won after all. I love how both of their voices go so well together and the way the singers are able to portray their characters so well through just their singing.
I kinda like this ending in the musical more than the anime. Here Light actually confronts L as Kira and they both die at relatively the same time, so even though Light beats L, it's not by a lot. I was not a fan of how L died in the anime, never actually receiving total confirmation that he was right about Light, so he couldn't even die with that small victory. And then they replaced him with N, who was was basically exactly the same character as him, so it was pointless to kill him and end their rivalry just to replace it with another one. I like this style better: two ultimate rivals face off and neither comes out on top.
Old comment, but that's the thing. In the anime, he knows and even sets Light up as the new "L" as his last laugh. He wasn't going to let Light fade out of the bigger picture. L making Light the new "L" was basically as big of a move to out Light to N as "L" Taylor was.
Haha me too. I’m listening to this song on repeat and it’s just worse and worse. I think I’m trying to torture myself with this depressing and yet so good song.
I suppose this is the best place to point out that Rem was an idiot. In the anime (And possibly the manga, but I haven't read the manga) Rem sees that Light put her into a trap. Why would he want to put her into that sort of trap? Not only to kill L, but to also remove the one protection Misa had, which means that he would have the ability to kill her if he wanted to, which is exactly the sort of thing Rem would NOT have wanted. So allow me to propose an alternate option that Rem could have taken if she just stopped to think. Rem says something along these lines: "I know who Kira is, and I can tell you if you will spare Misa. She's not your main target, and continuing to go after her like this will fall right into Kira's plan." L is the sort of person who would accept that offer, since he doesn't have an interest in capturing Misa, or 'second kira.' Rem says that Light is Kira and boom, there you go. Course, I would have preferred that L be the one to take Light down, but Light being too clever for his own good works too.
Teddy Zorro Well, Rem is lovestruck and not thinking clearly, that's part of it. Also that would still be directly interfering with the lives of humans and therefore still not allowed. Consider also that she can see everybody's lifespan, and the fact that a human has to touch a Death Note to see her.
The lovestruck part is acceptable. It doesn't exactly excuse her being an idiot, but it helps. However, as I recall, Ryuk said a lot of stuff that further incriminated Light at the very end, so I would have thought that simply speaking was allowed: it was just writing names down that vaporizes a shinigami. Perhaps the manga explains it further, but, as I said, I haven't read it. Not sure what her knowledge of lifespans has to do with this. Didn't like, the entire task force touch the notebook before Rem started killing people? Also, might want to change the title of the video. It has a typo in it.
Also Misa told Rem to protect her happiness. Rem knew without Light, Misa would be unhappy so having Light caught was what she wanted to avoid too. In a manner, she knew he wouldnt kill Misa and he didn't. So through her death she was saving Misa and Misa's life of her version of happiness with Light.
I realize that Misa's happiness was also what Rem had in mind, however I fully believe that Light would have killed Misa if it suited his purpose, and I doubt that Rem knew exactly what he was going to do next. I suppose it all comes down to whether Rem could see what is actually best for Misa past what Misa wants.
This is my favorite song from the play. L realizing that what he's doing isn't him, that he wouldn't do what he is doing on a normal day, but to him its not shocking until Light comes in. Light explaining everything, L still trying to fight back even though he knows he is about to die. The writing in this show, the ending, it's even better then the already iconic Anime. It's sad that this is just a demo, it would really do well on Broadway. Also I know I'm not the first to point this out but... I wish L's first verse was in the Japanese Version, it really shows his point of view well.
But WHY is L's first verse cut? That's the one that almost makes me cry. ;-; EDIT: Category: Comedy. Yeah, RUclips, that's exactly how I'd describe this song. See that tears of LaUgHtEr? EDIT: The little laugh Light has on "My power just extends now" gets me everytime. Ow.
Listening to this song for comfort. I won't get the justice I fought for for the last 2 years. Prosecutors are too powerful when it comes to deciding which cases they will or will not take to court.
I keep on coming back to this Musical! I'm sad that this is underrated and doesn't have a broadway yet (except from the Japan and Korea). No, I’m pretty sure that’s Light. The voice is slightly deeper and rougher than L’s, plus the context makes it more likely to be Light’s line (it’s in the middle of Light’s part, and L randomly having a line in there just doesn’t make sense. Also, Light repeats the line nearly word-for-word at 2:29, which only makes sense if the initial line was his).
Alia Baxter idk but I think it's L because the song is showing that L and Light are complete opposites. Like L stays calm and says see if flicker hear it humming, but Light uses his power like Kira would and said see it blazing hear it drumming. Like both their lines are reflecting on their character👌🏻👌🏻
i kinda hate how ppl are misinterpreting this song & potraying light as someone who cared about L. this was what Light wanted all along, to see L dies. sorry just very frustrated cuz L is my comfort character
For the most part yes I agree. Light here is gloating that hes won and he wants L to admit defeat. Thats why the line "dont you see you will die today" in response to "you will never, ever get away". Hes gloating and pissed off that L still wont bow to him. But he does repeat "a minute more" because at the end of the day L still was Lights best friend in a super fucked up kind of way. So yes Light is mostly in this song being an arrogant prick. But even he can have a small moment wishing L didnt have to die and will mourn him in his own fucked up way. In his mind its more of "if only you would have bowed before your god we could have been friends". So yes he doesnt care about him in a legitimate sense but he can still be kinda sad about it for a second.
@@gilby2451 id like to think light felt pretty 'empty' after L dies kind of like batman and joker . he liked having someone on/slightly below his level constantly challenging him, it gives him the thrill.
He is taunting L, right up until his very last "a minute more", when he feels a little regretful because now his only equal is gone and the game is finally over. He doesn't necessarily miss L as a person, just his intellect and the way he posed a challenge to Light, which no-one else ever did.

Yominji I actually have been rooting for light from the start, I was happy and shock that he won and L died as I know that a villian like him will die someday, especially in anime
It was than I knew that some one else will step in ,some one smarter or equal to Lawlet ,a true succesor
Which is ofcourse Nate river, aka Near
honestly, the part after L's death isn't bad because L wasn't there... it's because it's completely illogical, Kira had won-- he became justice, kira's cult was justice, there was no way of actually catching him, when they finally found out that Light was kira, he could've just said "okay... put your hand cuffs on me and see what happens" because... police isn't anything at that point-- every single person in kira's cult and even people that just like kira without being in his cult would've helped him out and he would finally and truly become the god of the new world as he always wanted, the only reason he died was because they wanted a more dramatic ending (which they could've done in different ways too.. i'm just saying from a logical point of view, there was no way of actually 'catching' kira)
light dies like ten minutes after this song ends though
Now im just sad :((
This is such a good way of looking at it! Yeah, at the very end they not sound so reluctant, and it’s so clear they don’t really want it to end.
Light was the first person to ever challenge L and the same could be said for light.
They gave purpose to each other's lives in their own sick way, and it will be a bitter sweet victory for whoever wins.
*_The homosexual undertones in this song are FIERCE..._*
I like.
Shadow Dragon Comms. *sinister chuckle* It's _nothing_ compared to the Japanese version of Playing His Game (known as Inside of Him)!

Nothing says gay romance like murder/suicide
I love/hate this song. It makes me cry. You can FEEL the desperation and fear in Lawli-pop's voice, and Light is spot-on. The slight guilt paired with the euphoria of his win are perfect.
Yep. Me.
Lawli-pop is an awesome nickname for L. I'll be using it from now on.
Lawli-pop. Amazing nickname, almost made me laugh while listening to this tragic song
Jarrod Spector's voice is perfect for L, as Jeremy's one is perfect for Light. One is chaotic and almost rough, the other is kind of regal and collected (or is it just me?). One of my favorite musicals and castings, love it❤️
Francesca Stura i agree! Casting is amazing!!
No, you're not crazy, I completely agree.
Evies Books It really is!
A Syrdal Happy to know so!
They cast these two perfectly
The thing I love about this songs is how human L sounds. The little laugh at the start is super depressing, because everyone knows this is it and his last moments.
I love the semi duet at the end, and the way their lines merge together. L’s lines are super well done, extending much longer almost as if it’s him trying to hold onto life: “Like a closing door”
And then their last two lines they both sound so sad, and it’s quite depressing. This song really made me appreciate L more.
Edit: everyone’s thoughts on these songs are the best :)
“...but you were with me all the way,” is the part where you can tell Light doesn’t necessarily want L to die, even if that means his victory.
A lot of other comments have said this sounds like a breakup song, and it honestly does. I don’t know if that makes this song better for the undertones it adds, or just sadder. I think it does make the song better.
The first "like a closing door!" That little riff hidden on "losing" I LOVE IT SO MUCH PLEASE TELL ME I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE HEARING IT?!
SAME, I love that L is always the one singing the high notes in these duets!
The voices are phenominal and I just ??? Really want to cry?? Like Light is trying to show his dominance and L's not having it? He still fights back despite the fact that hes going to die. And light wont let that fact go. Almost like all he wants is the victory, not specifically L's death.
It’s his pride to the end, right? It’s really depressing how much he wants the victory, not necessarily L to die.
This song is so depressing and beautiful. I haven't gotten over L's death yet. I wanted L to win.
L won in the Japanese live action movies
That’s what makes this song so tragically good. Y’know as the other comment says, at least he won in one world

the way he sings “i’ve seen through you right from the start” is just so :(
Quick thoughts:
1) Why didn't the Japanese production include L's first verse? It's pretty good!
2) I like L's consistency with the imagery of data, movies, pictures in all his songs. It speaks volumes about his isolation from normal human interaction.
3) This is a breakup song! The writers are not even pretending with the subtext.
Seems like L's first verse was simply from an earlier draft of the script. It wasn't on the pages Menchell shared.
Yo T.F. Allen, how's it goin. I've got a question. Do you have the 2017 version of the musical on your google drive, I've been wanting to watch it.
Theodore Francis Allen So sorry about your channel being taken down. You put in so much effort into sharing those videos:(
Instead of waiting for Broadway, an amateur production can easily be put up now.
Jacob Sadolsky I do not have the 2017 version on my Drive at this time, though I do have the raw video on my computer. I want to try to compress it a bit (it's about 4GB) before I host it myself. And I do intend to make subtitles for it once Sinnesspiel finishes with his/her subtitles (though I will not share it on RUclips). You can find a link to download the 2017 version from MEGA in the comments section on Sinnesspiel's page: sinnesspiel.dreamwidth.org/69424.html?thread=381744#cmt381744
Thanks a lot, man! I'm sorry I can't do anything to help your channel, but you have my full support.
YES!!! OMG im glad someone else got this. theres not even a little bit of regret or empathy in him
"how could i not see this coming" the day he was going to die, he knew.. so i don't really get that, but this song gave me chills, damn..
Min-Lee Macdonald oh, okay, thanks, i totally miss interpered it then ^
What i love abt this line is that throughout the whole show L and Light have been on even terms.
No, it's definitely not just you. I hear it too. It's kinda amazing and really heartbreaking.
The skill in his lines while singing (both of them though) is so well done, and it amazes me whenever people point throngs like this out and bring it to my attention.
Do you know any other things he’s sung in?
The Way it Ends, aka the ultimate anime/manga-fan break up song I swear to heck this freaking song sounds more and more like a broadway break up the more I listen to it
Ah, I love that idea of this song. It really does sound like that out of context though, which is really sad but makes it even better.
The most tragic part of this song is L's singing voice getting weaker and weaker as he repeats the line "like a closing door." The first time he belts it out with so much raw emotion and goes up on the end of the note. Then the second time he goes down on the end of the note as if he's realizing there's no more point in fighting. And the final time he sings it so resigned like he's accepting his inevitable death :( It makes me so sad!
i hate death note spoilers, amirite LaDIES?
xD
Well played XD 👏
Omg I think I got it XD THAT'S REALLY WELL PLAYED
Yeah I do too. But that’s how it always is. The LIGHT always DIES.
your comment made my day xD
And right after, Ryuk writes Lights name in his Death Note, making Light victory meaningless.
It’s just like what they said in the beginning. A complete stalemate.
It was always going to happen. Light's dream was impossible from the start.
This makes me want to rewatch Death Note.
Amber Thurlkill I’ve rewatched Death Note like 10 times and I’m still not sick of it.
Do it do it do it
Yes! Let’s all watch together
I didn’t actually ship them until I listened to the musical. I liked their relationship and I thought it was tragic, sweet, and super messed up, but with the way the musical frames them like a romantic couple it adds so many new elements to it. I need to rewatch the anime from this lens. The drama!
oh, L.... :'(
you will forever be loved....
Cosplay Nerd Forever and always remembered. :,(
He didn’t think he had any genuine friends...
I think the Japanese lyrics give L the final word a bit better, letting Kira know that this isn'tover yet, no matter what happens to him now. I do agree that his first lyrics in this one are really good though.
Dotti Rhodes maybe the script were alter when being localised to the Japanese version, maybe L say it after the song end
love your profile picture
Yes he does say a lot of that stuff right before he dies.
Where can we find the Japanese version? And I think for a first version this was really well done, but every version is pretty great.
This causes weird emotions. Not sadness or anger or anything, it's more like guilt and I don't like it
They kick in at around 1:55 tbh
I totally agree!
@Min-Lee Macdonald Owie, yes, this describes it perfectly. :'(
Same
@Min-Lee Macdonald You get the idea of this whole song so well in just this one comment. Thank you :)
Hahaha i missed that. He does drink tea a lot.
It still blows my freakin mind that Frank Wildhorn and Jeremy Jordan worked on this, but we ended up with the Netflix movie.
As much as I love L, I'm glad the musical ended here. We get to the see Light's power overtake him and make him "evil." Though, I wonder what Mello and Near would look like on stage.
Mello's singer's vocal chords would get yeeted outta the window and prob Near will have a soft as hell voice•~•(that's how i see em)
This song is literally me talking to my depression
Haha which side are you on? Mine is just like a cloud in my chest and brain.
I noticed that too! Maybe it's because in that moment, Light believes he's "won", so that high note expresses that? But I'm not sure.
I honestly hated that L died, because I fricking love him, but... I've always been Team Kira, and what really devastated me is how Light dies. So both L and Kira's death are traumatic for me T_T
Both of them dying was really sad, but I’m not sure how els it could have ended with a god of death involved.
As if L's death wasn't sad enough. This song just made it way more emotional ;-;
I loved how sad and graceful this made his death. Much different from Lights death in the musical.
Hey Aspie Near, I really wanted to thank you for posting all these songs. I love the he Death Note anime and am so glad I'm able to listen to the musical mostly in English. The musical is so great but they do not distribute so thank you for being Kira and spreading the justice that is the English versions of the songs.
Eli Ramer I don't know what to say... Thanks? Kira koso seigi?
Yes, It is Kira who is justice".
Thanks
L's death was way to fast and it was so sad. He was my fav character. This song is so sad but so good, L and Light's voices go so good together.
1:10 “a pawn upon a board” aways gets me such a good line
this song feels almost romantic, at least until I tune into the lyrics. wonder if that was intentional.
I don’t know. I mean one of the creators didn’t know the plot, so quite possibly.
I fucking Love L’s voice
Haha me too. I’m listening to this song on repeat and it’s just worse and worse. I think I’m trying to torture myself with this depressing and yet so good song.
Jarrod Spector!
I love this so much! Its one of my favorite musicals. Thank you so much for uploading these amazing songs!
It's like a break up song if you don't count the death vibes. Lol
Definitely. I mean there’s a bit of death vibes, but the overall lyrics have semi romantic undertones and I love that.
Teddy Zorro
Well, Rem is lovestruck and not thinking clearly, that's part of it.
L already knew Light was Kira, he just needed solid evidence to support his claims. And a Shinigami is not a very good witness
There’s something about that last “a minute more” from light... It sounds sad.
Can we talk about how it goes from flickering to drumming? It talk about how his(Light) power is growing, and how L’s light is dimming and dissipating
I love how Light says "but" at 1:26
the way L sings 'like a closing door' literally gives me chills
2019 and this song is just as addictive as ever
I don’t think it’ll ever stop being addictive.
This musical's music literally sounds like the love-child between Be More Chill, Dear Even Hansen, and A Very Potter Musical, I swear.
I’m pretty sure it’s L that says “see it flicker, hear it humming” I might be wrong.
Yeah, I think you're right. I was looking it up on Genius before and they have it as L's line...

Unlikelycoffee Tiger It is L but the person accidentally put it in red instead of blue
It's L? I'm pretty sure Aspie was right first and it was Light...I could be wrong.

Maybe it's just me but I don't get the vibe of Light wanting to spend a minute more with L
To me it sounds like his tone is taunting him
He is taunting L, right up until his very last "a minute more", when he feels a little regretful because now his only equal is gone and the game is finally over. He doesn't necessarily miss L as a person, just his intellect and the way he posed a challenge to Light, which no-one else ever did.
