Conan Doyle is a genius writer. He created a lot of interesting, exciting, brilliant masterpieces. I loved reading his stories translated into Russian when I was a child, and I enjoy listening and reading them now when I am trying to improve my English.

@Sans Handlebars, thanks a lot! It’s so pleasant and so inspiring to read your message! You’ve made my day!
I can write not complex sentences, but my speaking skills, my speaking speed in the first place, are still very far from my ideal. I’m going to start a channel on RUclips to improve my speaking skills, and your comment has inspired me to do that as quickly as possible.

I read the book when I was 12 or so (in my sixties now). I had no idea how funny it was. Conan Doyle has given full rein to a sense of humour and justifiable criticism of journalists in a way that one doesnt encounter in the Sherlock Holmes stories. The humour crops up in Challengers both brilliand and also vain character and the comparison with the Chieftain, and also with the upshot of the affair with Gladys. The tale and characters, so far, are much livelier than the more plodding plots and less colourful characters of Jules Verne, at least in translation. I love hearing Jules Verne on audiobooks and his stories have more science. Being a few decades earlier, for the writer and reader, the scientific knowledge was more novel and fascinating, and it is marvelous to experience the level of scientific knowledge back then. Thanks for posting this.

Great narrator, but his impression of the Scottish accent sounds Eastern European.

The failing of the modern mind.
Unable to enjoy the blissful experience of words. Instead rushing to the bare bones point and losing all meaning and value.
unneeded stress by a phantom clock that does not exist.
